We had a bit of a frustrating experience here. The actual vet was very good. The staff was friendly, though the vet tech did not know how to pick up a dog with IVDD. Our biggest issue was with their reluctance to do what was best for our dog rather than capitalize on the sale of heartworm preventative. We had purchased Heartgard through Saint Francis Animal Hospital when our dog's test came back negative. Shortly after that we took in a foster puppy who was diagnosed with whipworm. Whipworm preventative is not included in Heartgard, but it is in Sentinel - which is a competing brand. Our dog is 13 years old, and we would much rather prevent himfrom getting whipworm than treat it after the fact. When we contacted SFAH to make this request, they told us to just test him in 3 months to see if he has it. I brought up that switching to Sentinel may be a better choice, as it could possibly prevent him from getting whipworm to begin with. The woman on the phone explained that they receive "coupons" and discounts for Heartgard. I told her that the cost was not an issue. We would like a new prescription for Sentinel. She then directed me to the online store linked to their website. We have always used 1800petmeds, and every other vet we've had has been just fine with providing a prescription there. After I completed the order, I was informed that SFAH requires that we get a written prescription from them in order to purchase online. When I called about this, I was informed that they do not do business with online pharmacies. It is pretty clear that they do not have our dog's best interest in mind. We will be choosing a different veterinary office unfortunately. Read Less

Probably a good place for teeth cleaning , nail trimming or euthanasia but if your pet needs more comprehensive care this is not the place for you. After a major surgery to remove bladder stones and crypt orchid testicles I stopped at the front desk to make a follow up appointment, sleeping dog on my arm... Β and was told by the receptionist no follow up was needed.... this was the first red flag. Β I was told to call if there was a problem. Β Well I'm not a vet that's why I agreed to pay them $2000.00. Three weeks after the surgery my dog was still peeing blood so I called to see the vet ..... this is where the battle began!! I have never encountered a more combative, argumentative front desk. These girls delight in their power to push your buttons. I was told he would not be in until the following Tuesday.... 5 days... There are 6 other vets on staff!!!! Β I asked if I should restart the antibiotics, the receptionist said no because of the danger of building "antibiotic resistance" As I said, I'm not a vet but I can't imagine there's a lot of antibiotic resistance in dogs dead from renal failure. At the Tuesday appointment I was informed my dog still had bladder stones. Really!!! I'm still astounded. They insist they are new stones. I had asked for a program geared toward prevention but every discussion hinged on information they were waiting on from the University. "3 months" from surgery my pet was still bleeding and the last time I called to schedule a urine culture I was told by indignant, power wielding Β staff that my vet was out of town for the week and "could not" be contacted.... WHAT!!! He asked me to schedule the culture.... 6+ other vets on staff and a bevy of vet techs couldn't be bothered to culture a urine sample. Β This morning I spoke to the front desk regarding lab tests sent in a month ago. Β She was so intent on speaking over me with her litany of "make an appointment IFYOU CAN that I had to shout 3 times that my dog is dead before she would stop..... and then hung up on me because I raised my voice. INSANE!!!! Β Bottom line... urgency is at their convenience and directly proportionate to what they stand charge you. Save yourself the frustration of dealing with indignant power tripping staff, the time and expense of waiting for information from the U of M and go there directly.... PS save your canned letter of apology for someone in need of more " lip service" Read Less

My former vet retired and I have been looking for a replacement for months, bouncing around from place to place. I am pretty sure I found my new vet! Like the other reviews say, this place really cares about animals. I called this morning because my dog has been sick for two weeks and is getting worse since an emergency visit last week. The receptionist fit him in this afternoon because she didn't want him to wait two days to be seen. The exam was thorough, calm, and affordable. I appreciated the conservative approach on not ordering every test immediately, like some other vets, and to treat his symptoms and see how he is. Louis is doing okay, and may have several months left with us. Also Dr. Blair saw Louis when he suddenly went South, diagnosed and treated an infection, with utmost skill and care.Tonight we had to take our old moggie Tiger in for stumbling problems. Perfect is how I would describe our visit. Β I have an indoor housecat that turned 10 years old this year, so I wanted to bring her in for a wellness check-up. Β I know kidney failure is common in cats and wanted to have a blood panel done. Β I chose this hospital because it has high grades on Angie's List and excellent reviews on Yelp. Β I asked if I could go with since my cat was terrified. Β I was told that it was not permitted, but that they would do the testing in the exam room we were in so I could remain with her. Β On a side note, I called multiple clinics to get estimates on check-up and blood panels costs. Β This hospital was on the cheaper end. The 2nd visit either I recorded the appointment wrong or something happened on their end. Very importantly accommodation was made and he just saw another vet after a reasonable wait time. We saw two different vets and two different vet techs. Once for Duncan having a stomach/poo problem and once for his annual check-up. The were great. Kind and knowledgable. Eagerly interested in Duncan. He didn't get over doctored - we got out of there with the RX for less than $100 easy. Think it was maybe $65 with the exam and meds. I have taken my dog to see Dr Knep for about 7 yrs or so. He is a great vet in many ways. But the thing that I admire most about him is that he realizes that the person is important too. Let's face it times are difficult financially and sometimes vet care is not the first thing anyone can afford. My dog had an infection and I took him to see Dr Knep. He didn't judge me or shame me but rather helped me to help him. The infection returned shortly after treatment and I took him in and paid another 200 dollars only to be shamed by Dr. Roeser (Dr Knep was unavailable) and then the staff took his lead on that one. It wasn't outright but you could tell they were judging me. I can't tell you how bad I felt that I couldn't bring him in sooner. I had to go without food for some time in order to get him treated that second time around. After that experience with Dr Roeser it makes me not want to go back there. And yes the infection is back. I must say that I wish they had treated the source rather than the symptoms. I was told it was allergy related. I can't afford another 200 again. Bottom line Dr Knep is a thoughtful, caring and compassionate veterinarian. I can not recommend him enough. Thank you Read Less

Our normal vet is a fair drive away, and though we like her a lot, it's a long and traumatic drive for our kitties when they're very sick. Β I couldn't agree more. Β Dr Novak was wonderful and gave me advice on some dietary changes. Β The staff wanted to take my cat to their backroom lab for the urinalysis test and blood draw. Β They also did not try to upsell me on vaccinations or unnecessary treatments for an indoor cat, which I appreciated. Β Luckily my cat is healthy as a horse. The 2nd time was the same, somewhere around $65. His annual exam included a fecal test and vaccine updates. I picked them after reviewing Angie's list and going with my gut.
