I have been sitting here for the past 6 1/2 almost 7 and they haven't even "examined" him. Every cat and dog that walks through the door has been seen, treated and discharge. This place says they treat exotic animals. What they should say is that they treat exotic animals when they have no one else to care for. My Sugar Glider has massive swelling around his mouth and face. He could lose his eyesight. But after nearly 7 hours of waiting they haven't even examined him. More people have walked through the door. I'm taking him. He can live or die in his cage with his family. Instead of a cold stainless steel box surrounded by people who don't care. Read Less

This is a great practice that also deals with small exotics like guinea pigs. Thoughtful and caring staff. They have better follow-up than some human doctors I've went to.

Quotes “per protocol you can’t speak to the vet before paying an office fee.” So, I can’t even get to know you or know that you even care about animals? You just expect me to trust you, a complete stranger, based off of what? Some degree? No, that’s not enough. I want to know you have COMPASSION which the lady who answered the phone did not display for my Pomeranian having breathing problems. I just had questions about your capabilities and what’s available in office in terms of equipment. Why won’t you or any vet around here answer that? “Per protocol we can’t answer any questions before you pay us...” WOW. Read Less

All staff - from reception, to nursing, to the doctor, were friendly and polite, and demonstrated high levels of skill within their respective fields during my interactions with them. Setting up the appointment was quick and efficient, as was check-in. The nurse was quickly able to assess the condition of my puppy, and provided the information appropriately to the doctor, who was detailed and thorough in her analysis. All in all, the whole office seemed to work effectively as a team, and that made my experience better as a customer and definitely cultivated trust for me in the hospital's ability to effectively care for my dog. I will continue to come here for future visits, and hope for a long and healthy life for both my pup and our relationship with the Como Park Animal Hospital. Read Less

Wonderful, caring staff who went above and beyond! We brought our Eclectus parrot in for a checkup after having some concerns. Our vet technician took very thorough notes and asked a lot of questions, and the vet was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. They took our bird back to weigh and examine her, and when she came out she didn't seem too upset, so they must have been gentle with her. They sent us home with some pellet samples (and told us we could stop by anytime for more if we wanted to try anything new!), and the vet tech we saw emailed shortly after our visit to check in, which I thought was really sweet! Had to take our cat on a Monday night because his bladder was blocked up by stones. It was a long wait to be see.n (about 4 hours) but that was expected because a lot of animals were in rougher condition than Winston (he had peed and passed most of the stones in the carrier waiting ironically). They did take him to a private room and clean him up so he wouldn't be cold waiting which was very nice. The doctor and techs were pleasant. It was a bit expensive, but to be expected for urgent care. Honestly I thought it'd be more than it was. I would definitely come back for any urgent care needs. My roommate's cat got a hold of a bat (conveniently while she was out of town) and all resources said I should bring the cat in for a rabies shot, especially since I'm not aware of the cat's medical background. I was NOT pleased with the situation, it seemed like a mountain of time and effort to make sure the cat wasn't going to keel over dead before my roommate's return. However I have to say that my experience at this animal hospital was sublime. It wasn't busy and I got in right away (afternoon on a Saturday), the girls at the front desk were caring and funny and I was finally able to laugh over the unlucky situation. They were knowledgeable, QUICK, and the cat was her spunky and naughty self after the visit so I figure she didn't mind the place either. I just received a followup email from the hospital asking how the cat was, and I realized that I really needed to leave this place a positive review! I can understand a 24-hour emergency vet Place being busy but making your customer sit in the lobby for a half hour and then moving them to another waiting room for another half hour before getting face time with the vet just for a follow-up check-up is ridiculous. If the vet is that busy let your customers know. offer to reschedule. Went in at 7:30 and didn't leave until 850. For what was a 15-minute appointment and then got charged close to 60 bucks for it. I have been taking my cats to Como Park for two years, on a recommendation from my previous vet. In the past year, I have brought them in three or four times each and Como is easily the most expensive vet I have ever used. One of my cats is on continuous cycles of antibiotics for a sinus deformity and was prescribed them for his ongoing care. Since they do not eliminate his runny nose, only lessen it, I only use the medication in the winter when it would help. When I tried to refill, I was denied the refill without an exam, despite there being no change in his health and despite the cat being in for an exam two months ago already. I spoke to the clinic several times and no veterinarian was even willing to speak to me so I could explain there was no change in his condition and that this was part of the care plan they had prescribed. The reception staff were very friendly, but unqualified to help. I can only conclude that Como Park Animal Hospital is more interested in charging examination fees over and over than maintaining their care commitment to my pets.Read Less

I have had to use the emergency services a couple of times and have been nothing but happy.   In fact I now bring my pets to the regular vet clinic there also.   My last experience with the ER vet was when I arrived home and my little 14 year old dog was near death.  Lifeless and cold but still breathing.   They we informed that I was heading in and when I arrived they were ready and took her from me as soon as I stepped in the door.   She was one sick little dog and they took great care of her.  She was with them 4 days.  Being watched and cared for 24hrs a day.   We were allowed to visit.  Bring some food from home to see if we could get her to eat.   We were allowed to spend as much time as we wanted with her.   They sent her home when her care was just a matter of feeding and watching her instead of having to keep paying for specialized vet care that really wasn't needed anymore. Well. It has now been a year and she is doing great.   The meds that she needs to take I am able to purchase online so I can find the best price possible and they have never questioned me wanting to do this and they approve the medication.   All the vets and the techs have always treated us with kindness and we even went back a few months after her discharge just to visit so they could see how well she is doing.   I drive almost 30 miles to this vet. Their care is outstanding and I would highly recommend them. Read Less

Have LOVED this place for many years. Had been going there with furbabies and fids and always got fabulous medical and spiritual care before our B&G macaw got herself egg-bound. She did not make it through the surgery. My son was 9 or 10 at the time and this bird was totally gaga over him. The time that they had us take with her both before (they had one last dance together) and after (we were able to hold her and sit with her for as long as we needed) she left this world made our new journey without her in our lives much more peaceful and easier than it would have been somewhere else. We even got a card from them some time after she passed. I am crying as I write this, but part of it is because of the love and beauty this place and its people helped give us in our grief. Never hesitate to reach out to them for anything at all; they'll do everything they can for needs you don't even know your family might have. Have just realized that in our grief we never properly thanked them; want them and everyone to know how much impact they've had on our family. The difference between traumatic grief and a peaceful and loving passage cannot be understated, especially in a child's life. Como Park Animal Hospital: THANK YOU, now and forever!Read Less

I very much appreciate that they're open 24/7; you know that's a sign that these folks care about our animal friends by providing services at any time of day. I brought my hedgehog Nora in at night after she'd been acting strangely and appeared to be in discomfort. Being in a new environment, she naturally went into defense mode and wouldn't unroll from her spiky ball, making it difficult for the vet to examine her. Instead of just jumping into anesthetizing her, the vet spent her time talking with me about Nora's symptoms, the possible tests, and potential outcomes. I had gone in knowing it might be the end for Nora, as she was an older hedgie, and after considering the stress going through tests would cause for her and her future quality of life, the vet made me feel okay about my decision to say goodbye to my friend. She clearly explained the process of euthanasia and assured me that it would be painless, and then they let me spend as much time as I needed alone with Nora to say goodbye. When it was over, they gave me a lovely little clay disc with Nora's paw prints and her name on it. I'm sorry I don't remember any of their names, but all of the staff I encountered were friendly and caring and made this sad experience as comfortable as one could hope for. I hope to never need to use their emergency services again, but I will now bring my cat here for routine and preventive care. Read Less

I brought my French Lop rabbit in during emergency hours. We had never been to the clinic before. I called ahead and they were waiting for us and immediately rushed her back for assessment. I was fairly certain she was dying as she was 8 years old (at the end of average life expectancy for her breed) and she was suddenly unable to stand or even lift her head. I brought her in pretty much knowing she wasn't going to make it only because I didn't want her to suffer. Everyone was very kind, caring, and patient. The vet told me it didn't look good but that they could try and would do an x-ray and some supportive cares. She didn't push diagnostic tests or treatment at all and understood that I didn't want to put a rabbit who was already at the end of her life through anything more if she basically had no chance of meaningful recovery and very likely wouldn't survive anyway. She was very supportive and understanding and explained the euthanasia process to me and answered all of my questions. I asked to hold her and say goodbye before the procedure. She ended up passing away naturally in my arms and thankfully did not need to be euthanized. It was very hard and sad but also left me feeling at peace with the decisions that were made and the way everything happened. The care and kindness of all the staff made a very difficult experience bearable and I'm grateful to everyone. Read Less

I'm very appreciative of the care that Dr. Dawn Todd provided for my dog, who had the tip of his ear bitten off at the dog park, but I'm very disappointed in the way I was treated during my time at the clinic. My dog is 9 months old and is a rescue. We also just moved to Minneapolis two months ago from San Diego, so he's been adjusting to his new surroundings and hasn't had much of a chance to socialize because I don't know many people in the area. When we arrived at the clinic, he was uncomfortable and stressed out, and when he gets that way he becomes protective over me and starts to bark. He is generally a good dog and nice to strangers, but gets high-strung in stressful situations. With that being said: he barked at the ER tech and he barked at Dr. Todd when they came in to examine him, which I think scared them and put them off (understandably so), but the way they responded to my dog's barking was, in my opinion, inappropriate. Immediately, Dr. Todd starting telling me that at his age, he should not be acting so aggressively, and that the reason why he's being so aggressive is due to poor socialization on my part. She called my dog "naughty" and said that she didn't trust him within 10 minutes of walking into the exam room. She didn't say hello to me, ask me how I was feeling about the fact that my dog's ear was bitten, or seem to consider the fact that it was an emotional experience for both me and my dog to be at the emergency clinic and that that could contribute to his aggressive behavior. She made no attempt to ask me what I have done to socialize him since his adoption and didn't ask me about his past or possible reasons why he was behaving the way he was. The way I see it, she saw an aggressive dog and assumed I had done nothing to curb his behavior. I felt that there was a lack of compassion and empathy on her part.Obviously I don't want my dog to behave the way that he does; I don't want him to bark, or be aggressive, or scare people, which is why I've enrolled him in over 5 training classes and have been trying to get him to interact with other humans as much as I can, since I adopted him. He's a german shepherd, so he already looks intimidating, and I don't want him to fulfill that stereotype of being a scary dog. But Dr. Todd didn't care to ask me about any of that; she just assumed that he was bad dog and that I wanted him to be that way. To me, if you're a vet working in an ER clinic for the purpose of responding to emergency situations, you should expect and be prepared for tense and stressful circumstances such as the one I presented to her. Like I said, I'm grateful for the fact that Dr. Todd was able to treat my dog and didn't refuse her services from me because of my dog's aggression, but I don't think I will return to this clinic for emergency or veterinary care simply because I felt as though I was treated as a poor dog owner and had assumptions made about the way I train my dog that I did not appreciate. The receptionist there is great, though - my dog even liked her. Read Less

Just moved to St. Paul and my dog needed his one year check up. I thought things were pretty spendy, but I'm also from a small town and figured that is just how it is. After the apt we found out my dog has hook worm and they wanted to charge me $150 for his medication and almost $300 for his heart worm prevention- this is where I started getting wary of como. I told them I wanted to wait and I ended up looking around at other vets, I called Maryland vet and the woman on the phone was floored that they would charge as much as they did after I told her the prices for the hookworm medication, the heartworm prevention, and my receipt coral of his shots. Also I have been reading many reviews of people saying don't get an animal if you can't pay for one- if you're okay with being over charged by as much as como does and don't have a problem with it fine- ignorance is bliss. I was originally very happy with our experience here.  They got  us in on a weekend in a timely manner and even had a vet tech call us the next day for a follow up to see how our little guy was doing.  But this is where the decent experience ended.  During the followup call I had a concern about a new symptom I was seeing, I was told that the vet was in a surgery at the moment and that I would get a call back soon.Fast forward 24 hours, still no call.  I called back and once again was told that I would be called back as soon as the vet was available.  Another 24 hours pass, still no response.  I called again and was told the same thing, tried email and got the same response.  It has literally been over a month and I STILL never received a call.  They have made it pretty clear that they care little for smaller pets and I will never be taking another one of our pets there again.  It takes 10-15 minutes tops to make a simple phone call. While the vets at Como Park Animal hospital took care of the surgery our cat needed a few years back for urinary problems, I've come to learn that we paid way too much for this type of surgery ($1,200+), and that Como Park Animal Hospital is apparently known for having some of the highest costs in the state of Minnesota for vet procedures - we've been told the type of surgery our cat had should've cost about half of what we spent.  Wow, sure wish I would've known this before signing up.  Now, when I try to order the prescription food our cat needs through other websites, since it's much cheaper than buying at the vet, Como Park Animal Hospital won't even approve until we bring our cat in again - sorry, I'll happily take my business elsewhere! After a less than stellar experience at another emergency vet we brought our dog here. They gave us an estimate at $800-$1300 for 1 to 2 nights of overnight stay and IV fluids to treat pancreatitis when the previous place estimated double that. The other vet took advantage of our emotional state just for money. We wanted the option to start low that way we could treat our dog longer if necessary. CPAH treated our dog like their own, gave us constant updates, and my pup walked out of there 2 nights later feeling better than ever for only $700 (less than the low end of their estimate). Thank you so much to all of the kind vets and technicians for taking such good care of our dog! Read Less

I waiting in the lobby not long and a vet saw my bearded dragon his name is George by the way :-) I named him after curios George why because he so curious lmao anyways George had an infection in his eye that all from the sand it his cage! so they gave me eye drops for him which he hated but in 2 days his eyes got much better I just like the fact that this clinic was so friendly and fast and resolved the issue without any problems and Saturday and sundays they are open 24 hrs Read Less

I hate to give a less-than-positive review, but we've had wildly varying experiences with this clinic. On the one hand, Doctor Casey (sp?) is a very knowledgeable cat doctor. On the other, he insisted on giving our geriatric cat a vaccination ("because the State requires it") which took the cat down several notches. He'd been diagnosed with CKD, and we thought it was killing him. He stopped eating, hid in dark places, and seemed at death's door.Luckily, he bounced back after a couple of weeks, but I've spoken with several other vets who have said they'd never have vaccinated an in-door, geriatric cat, especially without getting labs back first. My impression is that they're about maximizing your bill, not unlike Feist Animal Hospital which we've also had bad experiences with. Their rates for general exams are higher than other vets we've used, and often there are optional tests that they regard as routine. Also, they don't hesitate to declaw cats, which I personally think of as an unsafe and deleterious practice for housecats. In an emergency situation, they are at least open 24-7, and close to our house should we need that service. But for any other care, I'd suggest looking for other options.Edit: heard from somebody at the clinic that read the review. They wanted to clarify that with the new techniques, such as laser declawing, it's a much less painful process. Okay. How about we amputate your fingers at the top knuckle, but do it painlessly! With lasers! For no reason other than our convenience! There you go, stubby. Got nothing to complain about now. Read Less

Unfortunately, they misdiagnosed my poor cat with feline herpes to explain her bouts of congestion and coughing. "Those are just flare-ups." We finally took her to Maryland Animal Hospital when I thought she was dying of some respiratory illness and they told us it was asthma. They shot her up with a steroid and some antibiotics and she was instantly better. We also take our dogs to Rice Lake vet when we go to our cabin and pay 1/4 of what Como charges. You could probably rent a lakefront cabin and take your pets to the vet for the same price as Como. Once, my dog beat up my cousin's uber expensive Akita and they took her to Como. They charged $400 to CLEAN THE WOUND. I can't believe I paid $400 for my mutt to whoop another dog. Read Less

Nero, my first dog, was also my first born.  Seriously, I'll cop to some major transference to him from years of infertility.  He was the big-eyed, adorable baby we longed for, and we stopped just short of diapering and burping him.  So when I say I entrusted Como Park Animal Hospital (CPAH) with his health and well-being, that's no small thing.Nero first came to us as a rescue dog--abandoned for 11 months on his deceased owner's farm.  Underweight, frostbitten, and terrified, job one was getting him healthy.  With Doctor Jennrich at the helm, and two helicopter parents, that was accomplished fairly quickly, and we moved on to maintenance care.  Well, it goes without saying that CPAH tended to my baby to the highest standards, or we'd have moved on--probably to the Mayo Clinic, the way we coddled our dog.A few years later, a Dalmatian from the rough side of town took a disliking to Nero, and the staff of CPAH was there for us.  Leg broken in 2 places, a five-inch gash in his back, Nero was a fixture at the clinic, and I could not have wished for more professional care.  Dr. Jennrich answered any and all questions, communicated thoroughly, and loved Nero up, as did all the caring, friendly staff. Years later again, my baby developed the hacking cough of an old man.  This was lung cancer, and this was a biggie.  Dr. Jennrich walked us through our options, supported us fully when we decided to treat the badness, and swaddled us over to the U of M for the big surgery.  Though the surgery was a success, the cancer later returned.  I don't want to dwell on this, but believe me when I say that if you must escort your companion out of this world, Dr. Jennrich is the one you want doing it.  He knew the pain we were in, he let us take all the time we needed to say goodbye, and he took extra measures to make the injection completely painless for our little guy.  A few years ago, we were lucky enough to take in a new rescue, Nick Charles.  We have kids now, so I don't need to transfer quite the level of maternal feelings to this guy, but he still gets the top-notch care we gave our first born.  I can't say enough good things about the staff, expertise, quality of care, and love for companion animals that we get from Como Park Animal Hospital.   Wet, sloppy kisses all around! Read Less

I feel like they used to be better. The last 2 times we went there the communication has been horrible. We will not be going back for simple procedures and hopefully never need to go back in case of emergencies. Read Less
