I have heard they are a little higher on the pricing but don't see an issue or care because the place is worth every penny. We are new to the area and our bloodhound was shaking his head and would not let us touch his ears. I called first thing on Monday and Nicole explained that they were booked but would find a spot where they could fit him in. When we arrived we were greeted immediately and a room was ready. Kalee Graczyk was our technician and did a fantastic job of making our dog comfortable. All of our boys (2 cats, 2 dogs) have had their primary care visits at Grand Ave Vet since moving to St. Paul in 2011. My gratitude to their establishment has been especially abundant lately as this past month came the need to make end-of-life arrangements for my old man of a black lab, who had been my companion for 14 long years. I had no idea how to even begin planning for such a thing, but the Grand Ave staff made it as gentle a process as it could have possibly been. They were flexible and accommodating with our household scheduling needs and incredibly compassionate throughout the entire process. As much as I wish my boy was still with me, Grand Ave did everything they could to give him the comfortable and peaceful crossing he so deserved. We have been taking our dogs to Grand Avenue since probably 1999 or so - I am a huge fan of this clinic.  I've had at least six dogs who have received care there over the years.  They have gone through a number of changes as any business does and have been great about communication.  Our animals have had everything from new puppy visits, wellness exams, surgeries and end of life care there - I highly recommend this clinic.  They are genuinely interested in each animal, how the household is going with the interaction between and among the pets and family - and they have recently become a clinic that pays special attention to the environment and managing the vet fears some dogs have. They handle my pup (who is very high-strung and vocal) very well - they never complain about her being difficult and instead, greet her with a warmth. When I got my first kitty, Joe Meower, I was terrified of having to take him to the vet because I didn't know how he'd respond. When I showed up at the office, I felt relieved to find a charming, welcoming and friendly place. Over the years, I've learned that Joe does not enjoy going to the vet very much and the technicians and veterinarians at GAV are very sympathetic to this. They are very patient with Joe as he sniffs and growls at everything. They let him go at his pace, taking frequent breaks and they let him decide when to come out for more. I appreciate the atmosphere, the level of service and the cost - Joe gets great care for a very reasonable price. I can't say enough about Grand Avenue Vet Clinic. Right off the bat, as new puppy parents, the clinic was extremely informative and helpful. It was always a very personal experience. Recently, our Pomeranian became terribly ill, and after a night in the emergency room with no answers, we ran to Grand Ave. Vet Clinic the next morning. With no appointment made, they saw the emergency and immediately were there to help. The techs and vet were so extremely on top of things in this emergency. Dr. Brownlee assumed our dog had a liver shunt before tests were even done just by our explaining and looking at the state of our dog (unlike our visit to the emergency room, elsewhere, the night before). After she sent us to the next place for testing, the results were true, and she was right about the diagnosis. She even made a phone call to us on her day off when we had questions and concerns about the illness. Simply, above and beyond! Unfortunately, we recently had to put our sweet little Pomeranian to rest, but Grand Ave. made it so comfortable and peaceful for us. Their private room and the Vet, Dr. Christopherson (who was amazing at each visit we ever had and especially comforting during the euthanasia process), along with vet techs were great during this sad event. We even received a personal card in the mail just days after. If we ever get another pet, we will surely go back to this clinic, and we recommend it to all. In fact, I usually don't write reviews but felt compelled to after my recent experience here. The staff are friendly and caring and Dr. Seidl is wonderful to work with. She takes the time to address your concerns and thoroughly explains the situation without being pushy or rushed. Having a sick pet can be a tough experience so it's important to have a vet you can rely on to put your pet first and that's what you'll get here. They're also aware that resources can be limited and are happy to give you pricing options for treatment ahead of time so that you never feel in the dark and can make the best decision for you and your pet. My experience at Grand Ave Vet Center was so warm and kind and understanding. I went in without knowing costs and was shocking at how reasonable the fee was at the end! I was here in Minnesota for only a few months but they treated us like our old vets. when Captain my black mouth cur had a very unusual (for him) bout of diarrhea they saw us right away, and spent time understanding all the symptoms and concerns of a crazy dog parent. Cap was feeling better that same day! They then told me he was due for his yearly shots in a months time, and that I wouldn't be charged for a visit, just the shots. The vets here are so gentle and caring, they make taking my cat to the vet much easier. You can tell that these people truly love animals and want the best for them. I brought my kitten in for her first few vet appointments and they were so good with her and with me as well, answering all of my questions and showing me how to trim her claws. I strongly recommend this vet. The only thing that I dislike is the waiting room situation. It is a very small area and there are often cats and dogs in the same space. If you have a nervous cat or dog who don't do well with other animals, it is not the best situation as there is no privacy and nothing to separate cats and dogs. Other than this one small problem, it is absolutely wonderful. Read Less

I have to be honest, the vet's and supporting staff are great there, but only if you could actually get an appointment. Unless you schedule an appointment 3 weeks to a month in advance, they do not have room/time for you. It becomes a serious problem when your pet runs out of heartworm medication but cannot get in to see the vet in order to get a new prescription. Would not recommend. Read Less

This is our primary veterinarian and the best I have found in St. Paul. Our beagle was adopted as a senior and he had the nose and appetite to go with his breed. The have been nothing but friendly and helpful navigating the world of aging dogs that like to eat things they shouldn't. Usually I just call, explain what the symptoms I am witnessing are, and they tell me whether or not that is normal and if I should bring him in. In addition, the online pet portal is great for getting vet records in a flash. No calling and waiting to mail or pick up. GAVC has cared for our family pets (and us) since 1985. During my first pregnancy I was upset because my dog contracted heart worm. Burst into tears in the examining room (hormones, right?) sure I wasn't fit to be a mom if I couldn't remember to give my dog heart worm meds. Nancy Balto (think it was Nancy) shared that during vet school she stepped on her bird and killed it while she was pregnant. Not a good oman but her career worked out, and so would my motherhood. I'm a first time cat owner (I adopted Charlie, my grey tabby, from Petsmart) and everyone at the Grand Avenue Veterinary Center has been incredibly helpful.  I know this makes me sound like a crazy cat lady, but my favorite thing about this place is the VTs and vets address my cat first, then me.  I like knowing that their priority is my kitty.I was given some great advice about diet on my first visit, the exam was free because Charlie was rescued by Animal Control, and the VTs did such a great job implanting his microchip that he didn't even make a sound.Charlie had to go in again today because of he kept scratching his ear - instead of just throwing a prescription at me, Dr Stadtherr put quite a bit of thought in to what was causing him to scratch.  She even said she will call and check in on him later this week to make sure he's improving. I'm new to the area and I have a cat that doesn't like going to the vet. So I left a message with the front desk regarding the vomiting issues my indoor adult cat was having. The technician called me back the same day to get some more information about my cat. Then an hour later they called me back with some stuff to try for my cat. I've never even been into the clinic and they didn't charge me for their advice. They were so helpful and informative. We visit Grand Avenue Veterinary Center for our animal-family needs, Dr. Heather Stadtherr our family vet.  We've found the staff to be kind, efficient and VERY helpful, always willing to go a bit out of their way if necessary to make our pet's lives a bit easier.Currently we're facing an end-of-life decision for our beloved standard poodle, and Dr. Stadtherr has been supportive, loving, and extremely sensitive as we examine alternatives to give our Atticus a relatively pain-free end to his long and happy life.We feel very fortunate that GAVC is just a few blocks away from our home, we can walk there easily.  Having experienced the loving care they provide to their animal patients, and the kindness they show toward the pet-parents they deal with, we are very happy to recommend their services. We have been taking our rescue pup here for 7 years, since he was a baby.  We recently had to have him under for a routine procedure.  The VTs there took excellent care of him, and answered all our questions, nervous as we were.We have had lots of routine exams, shots & a couple emergencies.  Every time the vets & vet techs are so friendly, helpful & kind with our "baby".There is parking in front (on Grand) or limited in the back, even more limited in the winter with snow piles. I actually go back across the river (i.e. from Minneapolis to Saint Paul) to take my kitties here, because they are that awesome.  The staff is awesome!  They seem to have a personal connection with each and every animal that enters it doors.  They don't just know my cats from reading their charts when I bring them in for their annual appointment, but they actually remember my cats because they truly care about each and every one of the animals in their care.They have sat on the phone with me and reassured me that The Mitten was not dying as a result of the medication she was taking (to combat a UTI) but that she was drooling and rolling on the ground because that is what cats do when cats don't want to take medication.  I should probably mention that I called them several times (making my roomate call once because I was too being crying and craddling my poor kitty.  They never once laughed at me, or made me feel stupid.  They took a lot of time out of their work day pretty much just to reassure me that The Mitten was just fine-she was just doing what she does best, being a cat.  On a side note to this day whenever The Mitten sees my roomate (who would help administer her medication-it was a two person job) she starts drooling ala Pavlov's Dogs.But, truly bring your critters (great and small) here! We had to put down one of our two-year-old cats a little while back. It was one of the hardest things I can remember doing in my short life but the folks at Grand Avenue Veterinary handled it all with patience and compassion. Our cat had been sick for a while and on our frequent visits to the clinic, the doctors were always very kind and thoughtful, answering our questions carefully and referring us to specialists at the U of M. When it finally became apparent that the kindest thing we could do was say goodbye to our cat, they helped book an appointment for us and graciously squeezed us in last minute. We were able to be with our cat for the last moments in a comfortable room with a couch and a soft bed for him. Although it was an incredibly hard thing to do, Grand Avenue Veterinary did everything in their power to make it as comfortable as possible for all concerned, and for that we are very grateful. Wish I could write a review under happier circumstances, but I recommend Grand Avenue Veterinary 100% for any of your pet needs. I have been bringing my rescue dog to Grand Avenue Veterinary Center since I adopted him about 3 years ago.From the beginning, the staff and service has always been top-notch. My dog's first exam was free because he was an adopted animal. I also received a few months of free of both flea preventive and heartworm medication; a great deal and incentive for adopting a rescue animal.I have never had problems getting in for an appointment, even when I had a sort-of emergency and had to be seen the same morning. They have extended evening hours once or twice a week and are also open for part of the day on Saturday so if you are unable to take time off of work for the vet it's not a problem. Their online scheduling option is great and I have been using it almost exclusively since they started it. I also like being able to access my dog's medical history anytime online.The vets and techs are wonderful. Until recently, it was an all-female staff, which is great for my dog who is nervous around men he doesn't know. On our last visit we saw a male vet tech but he didn't have to handle my dog and it was just fine. I'm sure I could ask for a female one if it was an issue.While you have the option to see a specific vet each visit, I have always just seen whoever was available and really like them all. My dog is a bit of a challenge because even at just 7 pounds, he pretty much has anxiety attacks every time we go to the vet and hollers and can get a bit feisty. They've always handled him with great care and knowledge.An added bonus is the nice setting the office is in. It is in a cute little Victorian house on Grand and it has a nice, homey feel. Not too clinic-like.There is a small parking lot in back for a few cars, but I never have problems parking on that block on Grand; I almost always can park right in front of the office no matter what time of day.I would highly recommend Grand Avenue Veterinary Center for any pet's care!
