Our pug was recently diagnosed with a new occurrence of her previous form of cancer. MVRC was where our primary vet referred us to manage her treatment as efficiently and quickly as possible. We interacted with several of the doctors and vet techs there, and they were all wonderful. Dr. Losinski, our surgeon, was especially thorough, knowledgeable, and detailed. Our baby is now almost fully healed and is cancer free, only a few weeks after the initial diagnosis. A lot of the negative reviews on here involve cost. I work in another type of healthcare industry. Emergency and surgical treatments are by nature more expensive than routine preventative care. It is unfortunate, but their rates are fair given the training, equipment, licensure, etc. that they are required to maintain to be able to provide those services. They did provide me with a low/high estimate prior to each procedure, and the final cost was never far from those estimates. I will return here if we ever need this type of care in the future. I posted the below a week ago. I want to state that from my review- a phone call was made to me from the Office Manager. She was very willing to listen to my concerns and talk through the events of the night. Thank you again I do not recommend this place in time of emergency. Let me start by saying that the nurses were FANTASTIC! However- the doctor as qualified as she must be- had a horrible bedside manner. She is pregnant- so I took that into account. It was 10 pm we were there until 12:30 we left with a receipt for almost $300 and no diagnosis. She came out and made us feel that we were crazy over the symptoms we brought our Coco in for. She didn't do any extra- but kept our dog in the back from us for an hour or more. She would say this should be done.. then do it- what have you been doing back there is what I wanted to say? ! Her nurses told her- in the lobby- the dog is unable to walk straight or stay straight up- her head is tilting and eyes are darting. We stated that we thought it could be Vestibular Disease- she says no way- can't be.. well our real vet says- yes- it certainly could be- like humans you don't have to have the 10 symptoms to be sick! We explained to her that she had stiffened up and clenched- we were sure she was having seizures- she says no she did that from vomiting.. seriously- Vet says from the video- yes that is a seizure. Once she knew we were upset by her lack of taking care of our dog- she said do you want to hospitalize her ? Hell no - not there unless your nurses our taking care of her... Do yourself a favor- go to a different hospital- The one in Webster Groves has been referred as well or the one on Manchester and 141. I told two friends of our experience and they said "we could have told you that- why did you go there?" well most of the reviews looked good-. For some reason those with bad experiences are not commenting- so I am making sure some truth is on a review. Read Less

This is one of the most difficult reviews that I have to write. I waited over six months because I wanted to write this without anger and I needed to grieve. On 9/12/17 I took my German Shepherd Ersa to my regular vet because she was very lethargic and not eating. They ran some tests and took fluid out of her abdomen. They were thinking cancer. They sent me to Hawthorne Animal hospital for an ultrasound. The Dr there informed me that it looked like liver cancer and that she didn't have much time. She recommended going to MVRC to do another ultrasound just to make sure. I went to MVRC on 9/19/17 and saw Dr Schabbing. He did the ultrasound and said that her liver looked good but there was a mass on her spleen. He recommended surgery and chemo. I scheduled the appointment for Dr Rappa for 9/21/17. Now they charged me $442.25 for the ultrasound On 9/21/17 I saw Dr Rappa. We discussed all of Ersa's symptoms and what we would be facing. He said that he could do the surgery that day. I signed off on the surgery a prepaid $2987.00. I went home expecting to bring my girl home the next day. I called my husband and informed him to go see Ersa before she had the surgery. They held off on the surgery until he could arrive. Later that day we received a call from Dr Rappa that when he opened Ersa up the cancer was spread all over and it was on her liver. We made the decision to put her down because we knew that she would not survive after being cut open. The next day my husband went to MVRC to finish up the bill and pick out an urn for Ersa. He also asked them to shave some of her hair off her chest and put it in a bag for me to keep. I never received that. We received a credit of $1,116.29 so our total was $1,870.71. Now the reason I say do not go here is because I spoke with numerous vets about my experience. All of them told me that whatever they can see with a naked eye when they open a dog up they can see on an ultrasound. Dr Schabbing should have seen the cancer on her liver. I could have let her pass away at home in peace. Not scared and alone at MVRC. They even charged me for Euthanasia when she was already on the table My advice, find a better specialty clinic. Most of the people that work here are just plain cold. No empathy or sympathy. STAY AWAY Read Less

I would never recomend this place to anyone. My dog got hit by a car. My local vet was closed so this was the referal number i got. We arrived there and lilly was taken in to be seen. I told them she was throwing up blood and had very labored breathing. While she was being seen the receptionist ask how i planned to pay as it was due at time of service.. I told her i didnt have any funds as i didnt get paid for a week. I was given the app for a credit card. I was approved for 1200.00. They came and brought me into the room and said the exrays showed no broken bones, but the ultrasound showed a pocket of blood in her stomach. We talked about the cost if surgery was needed and i was told around 4000. I said i had know way to get that kind of money. I was then talked to by the doctor who said she did not think it was anything unusual because of the trama. They kept her overnight and pit her on oxygen and fluids and a antibiotic . she took a few staples to her knee. I was called the next day to pick her up and was told she was stable. I ask about the pocket of blood in her abdomen and was told it was to small to worrie about. They also said she was peeing blood and said it was normal. They wanted an additional 60.00 for the antibiotics and a pain pill. So i said i had no money . they said they would not send me home with the meds and so they gave me 10 pulls of what was a muscle relaxer. The next morning i woke up to lilly laying on the floor and she peeded a puddle of blood. He stomach was swolen and she could not breath. I called them ans the same icu nurse told me they could not even pur her down without the money up front. She died . i truley believe they were aware her condition was life threatening and when they found out all i was able to get was 1200.00 they made me believe she could make it and took my money. I plan to call the card company and try to do something. I will call the board that regulates vets. As i talked to a frind who is goung to school and was told she had classic signs of internal bleeding. I hope they loose there license. Read Less

I just called this location as it is Memorial Day and my vet was closed. I had treated my kitten 2 days ago for worms and have yet to see urine in her litter. I called to just see if I needed to bring her in or if that was something normal following the treatment. The purely incompetent woman on the phone provided NO advice, but simply said "yea...I'm not sure if your vet is closed or not..." and just paused. I said "yes they are..." and she responded with "yea we can't say anything without having seen your cat first". As much as I understand that, I honestly could not even continue the conversation. Why would you need to see my cat to tell me how long is too long not to see urine? I immediately called Animal Emergency Hospital in O'Fallon and the woman I spoke with was extremely kind (and clearly passionate about what she does) and made me feel much better about what to do! I would NEVER take my animal to this hospital and I will be sure to spread the word. Poor, poor service for the first person to talk to! It saddens me to see poor customer service especially when I know numerous people needing jobs! Thanks for the quick understanding to never go here! Read Less

I wish I could leave negative stars. Their negligence killed my 9 year old cat. I had taken her to her regular vet who told me my cat had a hernia, and required surgery. She recommended MVRC for the surgery. We went to MVRC, prior to the examination, I explained that my cat was in significant pain and acting aggressively. She was also very unhappy about being in her carrier and was hissing and swiping at everyone but me. The employee said they would let me handle Roxy for the exam, but they needed her to calm down. The MVRC tech said they would leave her alone for a while and I should go home but leave Roxy thete to calm down. She said that when they were ready to see her, they would call me back to handle her for the examination. A few minutes after leaving, I got a call from them telling me to come back because Roxy bit someone. This was the first time she had ever bitten anyone. I went back and found out that the person I had spoken to, the same employee who, assured me that only I would handle her, had picked her up immediately after I left and had been bit. Although I was sorry this person was bit, it was minor and didn't even require a bandaid. Also my cat was current on every vaccination. I was told to take Roxy home to calm her down and made an appointment for the next day. I asked twice if this would be reported to animal control and was told no, it happened frequently and wasn't serious. Within 20 minutes of arriving home I got a call from Animal Control. MVRC had reported Roxy as a vicious animal. I was told that she would be quarantined for 2 weeks and could not return to the vet or leave the house until animal control could come evaluate her. Her condition deteriorated daily until she couldn't move, eat or do anything but needlessly suffer. It became so bad that I had to have her put down to alleviate her suffering. Had their tech listened to me, not lied to me and mishandled my cat, she would still be alive. Then, they had the nerve to send me a sympathy card. It was simply offensive. Do not bring your pet here. I will never get over watching Roxy deteriorate and die, despite having an easily treatable condition. Read Less

I hope I never have to see this place again. My vet suggested it because my cat has kidney failure and there would be someone to monitor him 24/7 on IV and medication. Everyone that worked there seemed to be so lifeless and cold. There were no feelings of warmth and empathy. From the minute I walked in,  they started with the payment plan . I said money was no issue and I put 75% of projected cost. When they called to give you an update, they read off a script and again discussed payment. Also the waiting was intolerable. Standard 1 and a half to two hours even if the place was empty. Always an excuse that there's an emergency or lots of critical care patients. No one was running around there like they were saving lives. They all looked as if they came out of a zombie storage unit. A doctor actually read a 3 page document of my cat's release and further care. In the end, they owed me a refund, I told them to keep it cause it seemed more important to them than anything else. I wish we never needed this place but Dr Buss was very caring and honest to me on the condition and treatment options and never made me feel pressured on the continued fight for our boy, Blue. He took special care to answer all my concerns. I am a firm believer that you trust a dog's intuition and even though this place brought reservations for our boy he always was happy to be around the staff, they were kind to me and him from the first phone call to the bitter end. Doctor Thoen took the best care of Blue during his emergency visits and final hours. We appreciated Dr Buss' kind words on the end and we received the sweetest remembrance gift from Dr. Thoen days later. We had to use the ER department Thursday night as our eldest dog, Shadow was having trouble breathing. We found out a few days before from our primary vet he had terminal cancer and the ER vet acted fast to try and save him. Unfortunately one of his tumors was causing massive internal bleeding and it was not something that we could fix. Once again the staff was kind and even though they just meet our guy, treated him like a lifelong patient. I am sorry I don't know the ER doctors name but she was very helpful in giving us weeks longer with Blue and making Shadow comfortable in his final moments. Given the severity of both situations we are thankful that the entire center does what they do and provided care for our boys we otherwise could not. Thanks for what you do and more importantly how you do it. It take a kind heart to care the weight. Read Less

I took my late dog in there for a diagnosis. I was rushed through my appointment in which my dog was misdiagnosed. Then when I tried to follow up over the phone it would take 3 days to get a return phone call from the vet. The techs , who like to be the gatekeeper between you and the vet were uninformed and would say stupid things that were untrue probably because they didn't know any better. Then it would take FOREVER to get the vet to call me back. My dog passed away as her condition progressed and playing the waiting game with Midwest Veterinary Refferal certainly did not help her condition. If I had it to do all over again I would have not gone here, and I would have spared both myself and my dog the painful frustration of dealing with this place. Read Less

Not even once in my life, have I ever felt truly obligated to leave a review. Especially a positive one. However, I think this place receives a lot less credit than it deserves. Some of the reviews on here almost scared my wife and I out of taking our dog here. I'm so glad that we went anyways! Our dog started having diarrhea on Monday. He has an accident in his kennel which never happens. So we put him on a temporary fast. Problem was gone on Tuesday. Yesterday I came home from work and he had another accident in his kennel. It was diarrhea again. After cleaning up his kennel I took him outside and he had diarrhea again. While he was doing his business, I noticed towards the end that  it was bright red blood coming out. I immediately told my wife, who is an aspiring vet, and we decided it best to head to a 24 hour clinic. And being a single income military family, all I could think about is the insane cost we were about to pay all because our little buddy was sick. When we arrived they put us in a room, immediately got our information, and started on figuring out what was wrong with him. They ran a parvo test, which made sense to test on based off of his symptoms. He came back negative. So then they took his vitals which were all normal. The vet then came in and did an initial exam and said everything looked fine. She then did a rectal exam and said everything came back normal. She then said it could just be an upset stomach and the blood was most likely from the straining. She then gave us some medicine to help his stomach and also some food. Then gave us direction to watch him and if it doesn't get better to take him to our local vet. When going to the front counter to pay, I was beyond nervous. The staff had been so nice and courteous and fast that I just knew I was going to be paying an arm and a leg, especially because this was an emergency clinic. Well, believe it or not, when she told me how much I owed, I was more than relieved! I don't want to give an exact amount because I don't want to create false expectations, but I can say I was expecting a bill upwards of 300$ and my bill was no where near that. With a previous dog that I had, I used Banfield and was charing nearly double what I was charged here for the exact same treatment and exams. I am so impressed with this place, the veterinarian we worked with, and all of the staff! Thank you guys so much for making our fur child all better! You guys have made a customer for life! P.S. If you are military, they offer a 15% military discount. They most definitely support troops! Read Less

This is my experience from having my 15 y/o dog come in and being diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia.  Most of the staff is professional, but at the same time, they never seemed very empathetic to me or my pet.  I rarely saw much warmth or caring towards my pet while I was around, so I can only imagine that only got worse when I was not around.  That makes me feel very sad and guilty today.  At one point, they sent in a vet to speak with me who had not been working with my dog and I told her that my dog's breathing was very labored and different from earlier that day.  She blew me off and said her respirations have been steady and the same after looking at the chart.  4-5 hours later I get a call that my dog's breathing had become labored and that she needed to go on Oxygen.  It made me really question the care and observation she was getting.  Another aggravation is that they were consistently more interested in speaking to me about costs and billing than they were about the condition of my best friend of 15 years.  At one point, I heard them quote a person a different pay scale than I was quoted.  I was told I would have to pay 80% of the high estimate quote when I admitted my dog.  I observed them telling this person that he would have to pay 70% and that they would go with the low estimate so the deposit wasn't so high.  I guess depending on how you look is what you will be charged. The absolute worst was at the end when this lady comes in after I had made the ultimate horrible decision to let my pet be put to sleep and starts trying to talk to me about arrangements and billing.  I tell her, "can we take care of this later/afterward?"  She says, "no, you may be more upset afterward and it will be harder."  Harder for who?  This lady was obnoxious, she kept trying.  Every time I calmed my pet's breathing down and felt like I got her comfortable and felt like I was at peace with my decision, this obnoxious woman came in to try and talk to me about arrangements and billing.  It happened three times.  She absolutely ruined some of the last moments with my dog to the point where I finally told her I just wanted to be alone with my f-ing dog until it was over and she needed to leave.  Now I am a big softie, I am a grown man who has been crying non-stop for three days over my dog, it takes a lot to get me to the point of cussing at someone I don't know, but she had absolutely no self-awareness and was not going to leave any other way.  They need to find someone else for her position, she is awful.Today, I am filled with guilt that I brought my best friend to spend her last few days at this place, she deserved better and I failed her. I've brought my dogs here for emergencies with great results...so I decided to use Dr Mahn as my dogs general surgeon for a small tumor removal. BIG MISTAKE! He was an arrogant prick, it was the worst suture job I've ever seen (I work in an OR) and when I asked him to look at the wound a week later because it wasn't healing well due to his gapping suture job (he literally saw my dog for 30 seconds) I was charged $91. After a surgery that was over $700 to begin with! Bad job + terrible attitude = never using him electively again. My vet warned me against him and I wish I had listened. Read Less

If I could give negative stars, I would.  My first visit was with nutritionist Dr. Chris Mahn. She was very nice, but was unreliable. She had to research a diet for him. She promised to provide his diet within a couple days. I waited over a week & nothing. I called to check up on it, but unable to reach her. Another week went by. Finally, I received the diet, but had questions. I spent another two weeks trying to reach her. Once I was promised she would call by COB. I waited until 5pm. When she didn't call, I called the facility & found out she went home. In summary, I pulled teeth for weeks trying to get info & my dog still has not lost weight. She hasn't even called to check on him. My latest visit I saw Dr. Michael Buss, an oncologist for cancer. Again, I was greeted with unfriendly staff. My dog is old & has been limping really bad. Even though he was limping, Dr. Buss felt it was ok to hit my dog really hard several times on his lower back. I could tell that it hurt my dog. I told Dr. Buss to stop immediately. Being the pompous jerk he is, his response was "that doesn't hurt him. What hurts him is pressing on a particular nerve like this." And then Dr. BUSS proceeds to PURPOSELY HURT MY DOG by pressing on that nerve in his back & said "see, now that is what hurts." How dare this piece of crap doctor hurt my dog! If I tell you not to hit my dog, you sure better stop right now. The fact that he didn't stop & took it further to hurt my dog to prove a point is beyond ridiculous. I can't even begin to describe the anger I feel. Later, I asked what type of dog food he feeds his dog. He tells me he feeds Purina Beneful Healthy Radiance. I told him this food is made with really crappy ingredients like corn & by-products (along with many other harmful ingredients like dyes & garlic oil). His response to that was "So what. I don't care what is in the food I feed my dogs." At this point, I walked out of the office. To add insult to injury, THEY CHARGED ME $102 TO HURT MY DOG. I will tell everyone my experience. Had TPLO surgery on my pup recently. I picked MVRC over VSS because I felt more assured after speaking to whoever answered the phone. She immediately put my mind at ease. They are a very friendly and knowledgable staff. They spent time answering all my questions and helped me out to the car with him.  I was concerned about the bruising and swelling occurring a few days after his surgery, and while I feel maybe I could have gotten more specific information as to what to expect - I had to research on the Internet over the weekend, they did not make me feel crazy, stupid, or  "over the top" when I took him in to get his knee and ankle checked out the next day. The center is spotless and Dr. Luther was great about explaining the procedures, which would be best, and why. I will not hesitate going back to MVRC, I just hope I don't have too. :) Read Less

Read Less

Far too pricey! My dog injured her neck on a Friday and Saturday my vet was not on duty so his assistant referred me this center in Chesterfield, a far drive. I called first and was told the office visit would be $112 and with X-ray it would be $350, not including meds if any were needed. I therefore went to and parked outside Jefferson Animal Hospital until it opened at 9 AM. There, Dr. Brianne Schneider examined my dog, gave her a sedative prior to the X-ray, gave us 3 types of meds. She also administered Rabies, Parvo, Distemper shots for my other dog. TOTAL PRICE: $220 and my dog is fully recovered so YOU be the judge.

I'm so impressed with the staffs' loving care they have provided for my little Chloe. When I brought her in and they saw she was in respiratory destress by the look on her face and bluish tongue the check in lady just got up and asked if it was okay for her to take her back to the icu so the staff could work with her while I checked her in. With in 15 minutes there was a tech talking to me about what there were doing for her. Once she was stable the doctor came out to tell me treatment options and let me see her. When I called at 2 am and told the tech my name and that I wanted to check on my dog she knew which baby was mine and how her night went without a pause. Read Less

Wow!  What a great Veterinary center!!  One of our dogs got into some food she wasn't supposed to, and ate so much that she was sick!  She was throwing up every where.  Of course it was in the middle of the night and our usual vet was closed.  We called MVRC and rushed over with Layla.  They were so kind and helpful.  They called the next day to check on Layla too which was such a nice personal touch.  We have brought our other dog, London, there too for check-ups.  Definitely visit the MVRC if you are a pet owner!!
