We have been patrons of Dr. Johanson's since our first dog a cocker Spaniel in 2001, he helped us deal with Charlies cancer and death, but we rescued a Chow/lab mix and he had no reservations about telling us how bad my dog is and they had to mussel right away to neuter him. He had nothing nice to say about my dog who is the total opposite of what he describes and he cherishes children and has never shown any aggression, which i'm sure now he will towards Dr. Johanson and after my little other dog is boarded there in May, which I expect the girls will treat him well as they always have, but it will be the last time we will use him or his practice again. My Australian Shepherd had been coming here since she was a few months old back in 2015. She would frequently have issues with diarrhea and vomiting but then she started to rapidly decline. I went in many times for appointments regarding my dog and was only ever sent home with antibiotics and never any real answer. Appointments always felt rushed. They brushed it off as if she ate something she shouldn't have as she was a "puppy" and "they get into things". Finally, I made the switch to a nearby vet after suggestions from friends and coworkers. With the help of their staff, my puppy who was considered near malnourished due to her weight loss and chronic diarrhea/vomiting, began to put on weight with their advice and medical help. Come to find out she had been struggling with Giardia as well and my new vet was the ones to find it (they send their tests out to a different lab for further testing). They even gave me a referral to Blue Pearl for some more in depth testing that they couldn't do through them but stayed connected with BP the whole time. I hate to say it but I don't really think my Aussie (who just celebrated her 2nd birthday), would still be around if we wouldn't have changed vets. It's been since fall of 2015 that I've been to Barry Road and I will not go back. My Cocker Spaniel, who is 9, also changed vets during this time and she is thriving now. The only reason I am giving this place 2 stars is for the care my Cocker Spaniel/Shih Tzu mix got in her almost 18 years with us. She passed in 2007. Her veterinarian has since left but some of the techs and receptionists from that time are still there and I am grateful for the care they gave her.Read Less

It's been over a year since I've returned to Barry Road and I will never return. We had previously been taking our Cocker/Shih Tzu mix here until she had passed away at the age of almost 18 in 2007. We continued to take our current Cocker here and Aussie and noticed their care rapidly decline. My Australian Shepherd was very sick as a puppy and her health declined rapidly. No testing and no consultations over 10 minutes was ever given. I watched as my dog got sicker and sicker, without any guidance or answers. I finally switched to a different veterinarian, and got the help we all desperately needed if only they had spent the extra care for her. I don't think my girl would be around if we didn't change vets. The only reason I am giving this place 2 stars is because of the care my cocker mix got during her 18 years with us. I will say, however, the techs and receptionists have always been friendly and comforting which I am still grateful for. Save your money and go somewhere else. Read Less

The vet and vet tech quickly ran their hands over him for a few moments and said he had nothing wrong. We went to a different vet hospital last week and asked about his hips and ribs again and after a long and thorough exam they confirmed his hip dysplasia and badly healed ribs (likely from a bad fight or car hitting him). We have been taking our dogs to this location for many years.  This last week after 15 years of companionship we had to put our dog down.  It was heartbreaking for our family as our children grew up with her.  The staff, vets and vet techs have always been wonderful and extremely helpful through the years but they certainly outdid themselves this time.  They were all ready when we got there and were very sensitive to our grief.  They have always given exceptional care to our animals and seem to understand that they are part of our family. I can't say enough good things about Barry Road Animal Hospital!  We have two miniature Dachshunds and brought them both for a check up.  After the older pup started getting sick and we found out that the she was going through Kidney Failure and didn't have much longer to live.  It was heart breaking news!  Everyone was so compassionate in such a hard time.  The docs really walked us through what options we had and comforted us in any decision we made.  The next day we had to bring our other pup in for boarding and the staff was very empathetic and assured me that he would get extra special care.  I can't thank everyone enough for making such a hard situation a little easier. Very happy to have found this place! All the staff are personable and the vets are extremely caring and knowledgeable. We have a rescue dog who is skittish whenever someone new approaches him too fast, and has been known to snap at times. He also has several health issues. The staff seem to know how to approach him and he's gotten along well with them and seems relaxed! Also, the vets and techs seem very happy to answer and address any questions that I have. Pricing is always reasonable as well. I would have to agree w another post that I have never been overcharged either! Never had to wait long, but even if I did, that's expected at a doctor's office (you never know what difficult patients they've had which is beyond their control). Highly recommend..Will keep going here! Read Less

As I've explained in a previous pet-related review, our darling girl dog Sadie is a bit neurotic. So, as you might guess, visiting the vet is not one of her favorite things to do, which is why she has no input on the review, as I'd guess her star rating would be lower! So, first the good - Barry Road Animal Hospital has always been great about getting us in for appointments, sometimes with very little notice, and they're open until a decent hour on Saturdays. They also have a partnership with Pete & Mac's (Sadie's doggy hotel), so we not only get reminders when she's due for specific things she needs in order to be boarded; we also get discount coupons that we can use towards her boarding fees. Nice! Everyone in the office is friendly, and they all seem to genuinely like animals (not always the norm for vet offices, sadly). Sadie is always given the adoration she deserves, as well as a couple of biscuits to enjoy once the trauma of the visit is over. The waiting area is very clean, and big enough that we don't have to worry about keeping Sadie well away from everyone she might get snarky with - there's plenty of room for multiple people and pets to sit and wait without anyone getting in anyone else's face. The vets and techs are all good with Sadie, and let her approach them without rushing things. They also understand that there are some things she really HATES, like having her nails done, and they work to get those sort of things done as quickly and painlessly as possible for everyone involved. So now, the not so good. While I feel like Sadie gets really good care here (because if she didn't, we'd stop going), it seems like she sees a different person each time we're in, and we practically have to rehash her medical history and neurosis every visit. The vets and techs are knowledgeable, and don't try to sell us meds or services we don't need, but they're not super familiar with my dog as one of their patients. Appointments never start on time, either - we always have to wait at least 10 minutes (it's a personal pet peeve for me when appointments don't start on time). The other thing that wasn't so great the last time we were in was that the person who saw Sadie had an extremely hard time doing a blood draw on her. I mean a VERY hard time, as by the time we left Sadie had been stuck 9 times. 9. Now granted, she isn't the best patient, but after 9 pokes with a needle, I think we were all completely fed up. The employee never lost her cool, which was good, but we left the place feeling like we had just been through a majorly stressful event...and of course, we had to pay for the badly done blood draw. I sort of feel like after that much of a cluster, we should've at least gotten a discount. We didn't even get her nails trimmed, as we figured we had put her through quite enough during that particular visit. I'm assuming she's healthy, too, as no one from the office ever called to give us the blood test results.Overall, Barry Road Animal Hospital is pretty decent, the staff are friendly, and it's nearby and reasonably priced, so we're going to keep going there, but there is definitely some room for improvement. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to a friend, especially someone who has a "normal" pet, but I would also let people know about some of the little quirks we've noticed. Read Less

I have a 5 year old pit bull that I have taken to Barry road animal hospital for everything. The staff was absolutely great with him every time. Their pricing was decent and they worked with me on a payment plan when I had him neutered and vaccinated in one visit, allowing me to afford so many needed services in one visit. The vet and vet techs were always professional and knowledgeable and it was a breeze to get an appointment same day or within a day of calling. I had nothing but great experiences with them! Great Vet and friendly staff. New to MO and was very fortunate to have found this Vet Clinic.  Very clean. Time is taken to explain everything and pricing is reasonable.  Had our new kitty addition to the family declawed at the clinic and my lil old guy( Bichon Poo mix) who I have had for 12 years seems to be okay getting checked out at the clinic. Read Less

I have been very impressed with each visit to Barry Road Animal Hospital.  They have fit us in when my regular vet can't.  They are very personable as well as great with our pets.   I feel they have NEVER overcharged me for anything they have done, which I have to admit  I've seen that happen at other places before.  Love these people, and highly recommend them. Read Less
