Appalling business practices that they should be ashamed. I brought in a kitten found on a walk. She had an eye infection and possibly unknown other issues. I asked them examine her, check for feline Luke and give her yearly shots. The receptionist explained they do not help stray animals. I explained that I am willing to pay. She said no and I could go to another emergency animal clinic or KC Pet project. I have spent thousands of dollars caring for my dogs over the past 18/yrs. I would have never done so if I had known their policy. This is the only time they wouldn’t take my money. Read Less

I write this as I'm crying, reading the card that was sent to us today from Blue Pearl on behalf of what seems like the entire staff, offering their beautiful condolences, thoughts, and wishes for the loss of our dog Chewy, a week ago. We lost our love before we arrived at Blue Pearl but upon arriving were welcomed with open arms and committed and compassionate service. They took him in to evaluate and confirmed our worst fears just a few minutes after we arrived. The staff was beyond supportive, and helped us through the beginning of an extremely difficult time. We were there maybe a total of 15 minutes and left with our boy to say goodbye. I want to thank them for all they did that day, and the beautiful card and poem that gives me hope that I'll see him again one day. Read Less

Blue Pearl is filled with knowledgeable, compassionate vets and staff. We took our nearly 16 year old dog, we had him for 14.5 of those years, to the hospital very late on a Saturday evening in December. They delivered fantastic care, kept us informed, performed a few tests and talked over next steps with our entire family. When the ultimate best decision was to allow him to exit this world peacefully, they gave us all the time we needed to tell him good bye. It was comforting to be with him at the end and know we spared him a terrible reality in the next few days. While this isn't a place I hope to visit again, at least for a very long time, I wouldn't hesitate to involve them in any kind of emergency care. Read Less

I absolutely hate that I have to write a review for this business for one simple reason - my heart is still broken. But here I am, swallowing away the hurt from having to make a hard decision to express how thankful I am for Blue Pearl. I came home from work this past Monday to find my cat Truffles struggling to breathe normally. Knowing she was old and underweight (don't worry, I'd taken her to the vet two weeks prior for this reason), I immediately worried that that night might been her last. I hate that I was right. 20 minutes later, I loaded her up and Yelper Mom and I headed to the clinic. We walked in in the middle of a slow period and were greeted immediately by the front desk associate Cierra. She took my cat to the back right away to get her visit started and let me finish the paperwork, all of which was quick and easy before she took us back to a room. We waited for about 45 minutes while they were treating her in the back and a tech named came in during the wait to ask for Truffles' medical history. Dr. Rushing came in a little bit later with news I didn't want to hear. She offered some additional services to figure out what was going on and gave us the estimated cost, however she was compassionately honest with me and informed me that even if we took advantage of the X-Rays, Truffles still may not survive. Knowing this and not wanting her to suffer any longer, I made the choice to have her put to sleep and waited to see her. I cannot say enough good things about this clinic and how they treated Truffles so quickly and how they handled my fragility. They reminded us multiple times that we could spend as much time as we needed to with her before and after her shots were given and I am so thankful that they made one of my hardest decisions as easy as they could. I love that they send you a condolence card afterward along with a couple of cards of paw prints - something I've unfortunately had to collect for other lost pets in the past. Thank you Blue Pearl. Really, I can't say it enough. Read Less

I feel I must respond after reading the negative reviews on here. My comments are for the establishment on 91st St, Kansas City, MO. Although it is still very difficult to speak about the loss of our beloved Lab, Lucy, I know she would want us to defend some of these negative comments. Apparently those saying Blue Pearl is all about the money, have Vets that don't charge fees for their services and also have some sort of special abilities or a crystal ball whereby they can diagnose a pet instantly even though they have never met the pet before and have no records or data on file. We love our Vet, but quite frankly even though we were a long time customer of 16 years, when we called them early on Saturday morning needing an emergency appointment, they turned us away since they close at noon & already booked. We have invested many dollars to keep our pet happy and healthy, with that Vet. In the end however, it was Blue Pearl that offered to take care of us in the best way they could. With kindness, caring, understanding and sympathy. They did not encourage us one way or the other about Lucys health decisions. They did share their expertise based on what they could see and on what we told them about her and stated the options along with the costs for those options. Once we made a decision, they proceeded to support us and make letting her go as peaceful as possible. We highly recommend this clinic and their staff. Not sure how any business could stay in business without charging for their services, especially one that is there for us 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week. Read Less

We have utilized BP several times. All three of my dogs(different breeds) have visited once or twice! When my GSD was 2 years old, he had an emergency procedure for an intestinal condition that could've killed him in a short period. They diagnosed quickly, and performed surgery to repair the issue. He is now 4 1/2 years, and hasn't had any problems since the operation. My boarder collie doesn't make wise choices, and has visited a couple of times. She has never required surgery(surprisingly). The medical staff at BP didn't do anything that wasn't required. They gave her some meds, and sent her home to rest. When my 16 year old Maltese passed, last Labor Day weekend, my husband took her there. They sent a hand-written card, paw print, and were super supportive. They made it easy for her body's transition to Rolling Acres as well. I believe the special measures they take when an animal passes, are super-meaningful in such a difficult time. For the people who complain about costs; Specialists work at this hospital. Doctors who are at the top of their game. They wouldn't be this far, if they were incapable of doing so. They deserve to be more expensive, which requires a business to have higher overhead. I don't have a problem paying extra for their services. As an advocate for my animals, it gives me a piece of mind knowing my dogs are in great hands. Special hands. SO thank you friends at BP. Thank you for sucking my pocket book dry to save the lives of my furry family members. NOTE TO SELF: When my kids go off to college, I'll be purchasing a hermit crab(to stay within budget). Read Less

I went to visit Blue Pearl on a Thursday evening about 9:00 PM and left around 1:00AM. Long visit and what seemed like long waits between tech and doctor consults. I had a positive experience overall. Most people are not reading Emergency Vet Hospital reviews in advance to be "prepared", it is usually after the fact in this type of situation. But, if you are, hopefully this can help you be prepared and understand the "process". First, this service DOES NOT come cheap. This business is not human medicine, there are not insurance companies subsidizing the expense of caring for your pet in an emergency.  These places staff employees in anticipation of the public's need. They are there if you need them. they are staffed and may not see anyone in an evening. the expense is still there.  If this business model came cheap, your regular vet would be open late evenings and weekends to serve you. The wait... remember in most cases these are emergencies and are never scheduled appointments. Patients are triaged. Most critical come first and of course we will always feel ours is dire or we would not be there. It may look like its not busy but there are patients in rooms and in back that you dont see. This usually happens in human ER rooms and we have have the same expectations, emotions and feelings about our human counterparts and the hospital/staff, its just the way it is in emergency medicine. The "payment plan" or lack of funds to pay for your expenses scenario.... It is a business and deserves to make money to provide services to the community and stay in business. Tell me where else you can go and sign a "promissory note" or get a "loan" for services rendered? It doesn't work that way. (there are options for loans through a third party company based on income, credit, etc. )  It is easy to hate on a place like this after everything has calmed down and your regular vet "makes everything better". I LOVE my regular vet but you know what, he didn't give me his cell number to call him at night or weekends if I needed anything. Last time I checked, he didn't make house calls at midnight either. Emergency Animal hospitals are a service, an amenity, maybe even a luxury for only those who can afford it? They are not a right provided to the general public. This sounds dickish but I hope explains why some people leave disappointed. So, after I left and went home I had a bill for tests that didn't prove much either. Got a differing opinion from my vet the next morning like a lot of other reviewers. But when it is all said and done I feel better about going there and appreciate the care they provided. My only complaint and mentioned in a couple of other reviews is why did my sick dog who was resting at my feet have to be woken up and taken back for a simple shot? Couldn't that shot been brought to him? Read Less

Wow - reading all the negative responses I figured I'd write a positive one. As with all online reviews - take them with a grain of salt since people are far more eager to write a bad review than a good one. Our first experience with blue pearl was when pete and mac took him there while we were out of town since he had diarrhea and what they thought was a slight fever....it was after hours and on a weekend of course, so their vet wanted to run a few tests and an x-ray since they didn't know him or if he had ingested anything. They called and discussed why and the cost, which was pretty high, but he's part of the family. Our second experience was when we thought Axle was suffering from hip dysplasia. After several visits to our vet they finally said try physical therapy at blue pearl. My wife took Axle to be evaluated and they immediately said it's not his hip, it's his acl (we have since changed vets!). I asked several friends with dogs that have had the surgery and all said blue pearl is the best. When we picked him up after surgery, the tech did a fantastic job explaining his post op care - I thought it was more thorough than post op care I've gotten! He's a month out from surgery and doing great...we're doing pt there as well. Only reason I'm giving them 4 stars instead of 5 is cost, but you get what you pay for..... Read Less

I was drained of every cent I had and had to put off my dentist appointment, grocery shopping and had to borrow money to make sure my pet got what he needed...which was highly treatable and a tenth of the cost at my normal vet. Unfortunately my little guy got sick on a holiday in the middle of the night. This place has got its priorities backwards and takes advantage of pet owners. My pet deserves better than putting a price tag on him or put him down bc I'm low income. This was a traumatic experience for me, and I will be feeling the pain from this experience emotionally and financially for a long time. The only redeeming thing about this place is the team. We have had to use Blue Pearl twice...both times same dog.  Our precious Brendel Pittie had a turmor and had to have his spleen removed....for an older dog, he came thru it really well and they were so good with him.  That gave him about another year...Sadly...two weeks ago he snapped a vertebre in his neck.  Was in an extreme amount of pain, but they kept him on pain meds by iv while we wresled with what to do and give the rest of the family time to come visit and let him know that they loved him too.  My husband and I slept on the floor with him for several hours and my daughter brought my 4 year old grandson (Deablo's best friend in the world) up to see him.  The were so kind and respectful....and so very gentle.  I can't say enough good about them!!!  We had had a very bad experience with Northland Mobile Vet a couple of years ago putting our little shih tzu to sleep...He hurt that dog so bad he screamed and screamed in pain.  Thank God for places like Blue Pearl  Deablo was 14 and they said it would be a long hard surgery...I looked at the Vet and ask if she would put her dog thru it and she said, no....not at this age.  Thank you, Blue Pearl!!! I can't say enough about the staff and Dr.Sires. Unfortunately we had to rush our beloved 9 year old English Bulldog Fiona to them upon finding her in the midst of a seizure. I had noticed that she had been trending downhill a few months prior. The staff seamed very concerned and Dr. Sires was great in discussing all our options for Fiona. She could have easily convinced me to drain my bank account to try to help Fiona, and I would've done it with no reservations had I thought she would have a good prognosis. We came to peace with the hardest decision we ever had to make. They made time for our son to get there and gave us all the time we needed to say our goodbyes to the best dog a family could ask for. They also took the time to send a sympathy card that each member signed personally along with their condolences and Fiona's paw print. I am very blessed that I decided to take her there. Read Less

AMAZING! Seriously, these folks...their care, compassion, help making an educated decision, everything about our experience was fantastic. The DR helped talked through the options with prices. He was not pushy in any way. Our dog ended up passing a couple of hours later without any intervention. The staff prepared a viewing room for our family (young children) to come back in the morning to say goodbye. And they refunded the portion of my upfront payment for care that wasn't performed. Brought my dog in because my other dog bit her and thought she needed stitches. Check in process was easy, got into a room within 5 minutes. What I didn't like is they took my dog into the back without me. They said they were just getting her weight and asked if she could get a shot for pain, which I said was fine. 5 minutes later the vet walks in (without my dog) and tells me that she won't need stitches. I found it weird that they wouldn't do the shot and exam in the same room they put us in. The exam is $88, and all together he wanted to charge me $250-$300. I told him that's not doable. He went and printed out everything and allowed me to pick and choose what I wanted to do. I ended up paying $150, which isn't awful for an emergency care place. What caring people!  It became apparent it was time to have our beloved elderly cat euthanized on a Sunday which left us with few options of where to go.  I called ahead to see if we needed an appointment and was told no.  I was dismayed when we arrived to see a sign stating it would be a 1 to 2 hour wait.  I didn't know how I could handle that in a waiting room with other people.  Fortunately, it never was a problem.  As soon as the receptionist realized why we were there she directed me to an exam room while my husband filled out paperwork.  We still had a wait but that just gave us more time to say good-bye.  The privacy was such a blessing!  Everyone who came in to see us was caring and sympathetic.  We'd never been there before but they all understood our sad task and made it as easy on us as possible.  A week later we received a lovely card with hand-written notes of sympathy from the staff.  On top of that they contacted our vet with the news because they also sent a lovely card.  It's a mystery to us how they knew who to contact because my husband said he couldn't remember and didn't add it to the paperwork.  Someone took the extra step of figuring it out.  I can't say enough about the lovely, caring people at Blue Pearl.  Thank you. I'm not happy that I had to become a complete jerk just to get help for my dog:My wife and I brought our dog in after she threw up and started urinating blood, as well as refused to eat, drink, or even move. After waiting a half hour before even speaking with a tech, another 15 to see the doctor and before any treatment was given, they wanted us to pay 456.00 for treatment, or a bare minimum of 88.00 just for them to listen to our dogs heart rate and literally nothing else and no treatment. They didn't offer any solutions and would not take payments, work with us the least bit, and despite my wife and I offering them all of our information and getting paid that night, they would do nothing to even stabalize our dog. All they told us was to "go to a Vet tomorrow" (since it was a Sunday). We weren't rude to them at this point, until the tech became defensive and tried to insult our intelligence, at this point the lack of professionalism became apparent.Bad service, or more, lack thereof, and overcharging on everything. In fact, a woman came out as we were leaving and was complaining about how high priced it was, we thought she was crabby and ignored it, but I get it now. This place has its priorities mixed up, money before patients, a terrible business model. I had to become rude and go on the offensive just for them to speak to a manager, instead of them just going to that in the first place. Finally they rectified some of the lack of responsibility and actually treated our dog, but only after complaining for 10 minutes at the front desk.To say the least, I'm not impressed, especially since we were the only people there, and it took over an hour and a half just to get things going. I get that they have people that don't pay the lump sum, however that's why there are options for payment plans in other successful businesses who are willing to work with you right away, as opposed to treating a veteran and his family like they mean nothing just because they don't have a near 500.00 to pay in one lump sum. It turns out they do "repayment" plans, but you have to get into a huff just to get it, which is the unfortunate part... This would be a 5 star review if they would've offered that plan to begin with, because when we finally did get our dog treated, they did a great job, but the lack of customer service from the start and the way we were treated up to the point where I had to become a jerk just for them to help was ridiculous. Our 15 year old Shepard began to have seizures suddenly in February, and the vet on duty that night did everything she could to help stop his seizures and make him comfortable. End the end we had to make the hard choice to let him know due to the toll the seizures took on his body at his age. But we know we had placed in the best hands we could have . Our Afghan Hound who is 7 began to act a bit off so we had her checked out and it turned out she had a UTI. Blue Pearl diagnosed her quickly and accurately, prescribed and advised me when to give her the meds. They also advised of next steps (when to have our regular vet recheck her). Another great thing about Blue Pearl is that they send all of your test results and follow up to your regular vet so they have it for your pets chart and when you follow up they are up to speed on your pets situation. I have had to use other after hour vet care in the past and I feel that Blue Pearl you get what you pay for, it is always going to be a bit more expensive than your regular vet but, you can be assured they are going to use all of their resources to help your pet get better.  Thank you all for being so caring and taking care of my furry family. 2.5hr wait then an $85 charge for a 3 minute examine including listening to my pets lungs, looking in his ears and then finally inspecting his impacted anal glands.  We left after being quoted $550 for a treatment plan to express his glands.  After a dispute they finally waved the $85 charge, they couldn't justify how lifting a dogs tail could justify the charge.  We will never return!Part 2:The next day we took our pet to our veterinarian (Independence Animal Hospital on Noland Rd).  Total charge $20.50!  $15 for the office visit and $5.50 to express his glands.  The perceived issue actually turned out to be the equivalent of a mole/freckle on a dog and the surgery happy idiots at Blue Pearl wanted to charge me $635 for a non issue! I can't believe the poor customer service skills their staff has. I called about my sick dog to ask what I should do, and they said that they could not tell me. I wanted to know about a medication and how much I can safely give to my dog for pain, but they said that they would not help because they did not prescribe it. I know that they were only wanting money, but I would have been happy to pay for the one sentence telling me if I could give more medication or not.I have also been to this er multiple times, (at least 5) in the past four months with my dogs injury, so its not like I was just randomly calling them for free advice! I have already paid them about seven hundred dollars for them just to say he's got back problems. The woman was so condescending and unprofessional, it was almost like she thought I had called just to annoy her. If my baby is hurting, you don't get to be rude and condescending to me, treat me like I'm 5, and then tell me you won't answer a yes or no question in the rudest way you possibly could! There is an emergency vets office on north oak and Barry road that is much less expensive and they answered my question within the first 2minutes of our phone call. They never expected me to pay for a question! Their phone number is 8164555430! Read Less

Let me start by acknowledging that emergency animal care can not possibly be an easy job. When the only option is what everyone knows is going to be expensive and yet they are so concerned about their pet that they're willing to spend the money - you know you're going to be dealing with some dire cases. If you're an animal lover, and I assume that if you choose to be a DVM, you are at the very least fond of animals, this has to be a tough job. Ok, so now that that is out of the way, if you are an animal lover and you are a DVM, please find another way to help animals. Find another model that works, because this one doesn't. My wife woke me Sunday to tell me that she thought our cat was dying. She's not an irrational person, so I got up. The cat was lifeless curled up in a ball on a bed. He looked dead. He was lethargic and felt like he hadn't been eating. We knew it would be pricey but wanted to know what we could do - so we called and arranged to bring him in to Blue Pearl. No one was at the desk when we came in so we waited a few minutes - someone came from around the corner of the office and asked what was going on - we told her and was led into an examination room and given some paperwork to complete.A little bit more waiting and an assistant came in, asked what was going on, took the paperwork and said she'd be back. A little bit more waiting and she came back, asked a few questions pet the cat and left. A little bit more waiting, she came back, took the cat. A little bit more waiting, the Dr. came in, introduced herself, said the cat was dehydrated and suggested a blood test and an exam. $121 would be the total. Sure, we said. It'll be quick she said, 10 or 15 minutes she said. A lot more waiting, 30 minutes later, she came back. tests were normal but he was dehydrated and she'd recommend treatment for that if not an IV and a stay, then fluid under the skin. The total would be either $330 or $800. Not being given any new information but already charged for tests, we've lost confidence at this point and declined. She was really not happy about that and told us that was against her medical advice. At the front desk, they gave us a total of I think around $250. We didn't understand the difference between what we were told and what they were wanting to charge and they removed $25. The total was around $225 but we didn't get a receipt because they couldn't figure out how to print one. Something was wrong with the cat, we know that. It's unfortunate we took him to a professional, paid over $200 and didn't get any new information beyond a recommendation that we spend more money with them for an unknown condition. We worried about him for the next three days but gave him water and wet cat food, even offered him food in a bottle. He recovered and now four days later is as ornery as ever. We hope that if you find yourself in this position, you find other options. I believe there are choices, there are vets that make house calls. I suspect that if you have a relationship with a vet that they may make special considerations if there is a life threatening emergency. It would even be worth paying a little more to get some value from it. Read Less

Read Less

Thank you. We took our family cat of 18 years to Blue Pearl for some emergency care on a Sunday afternoon when we noticed she wasn't doing well. The care we received beginning with the receptionists and continuing through the doctor was outstanding!  It was already a very difficult time and the staff was kind, patient, and extremely empathetic!  And then today, within a week of our cat's death, my wife received a handwritten note from the entire staff expressing their sorrow at her loss. Very thankful for Blue Pearl during this time of need! Read Less

This is not the typical check in any pet lover looks forward to making and, as such, I have not checked in though I have been here twice. I am glad to have such a friendly, capable, and fairly quick, after hours emergency vet service so close to home! They took great care of my dogs when medical situations arose and sent the information on to my vet who followed that notification with a phone call the next day. The peace of mind is worth the extra emergency costs. Read Less

I cannot say enough fabulous things about the entire staff and surgeon at BluePearl in the Northland.  After my Westie having a ruptured gallbladder and needing emergency surgery, Dr. Andrea Nowak, DVM literally saved my Jakers life. It was a very complicated major surgery and she and her staff did everything.  They were very compassionate and I am SO grateful.  But not only was it a successful surgery but their aftercare, staff, front desk, etc. treated me like I was their only client/patient.  I will forever be grateful to BluePearl and their superior service.  Julie and Jakers Read Less

2 of my cats ate lilies and they are assholes for that.  We drove all the way up here and walked in.  The people here are caring and want to get your animals taken care of.  It cost $2k for the 2 cats to stay get stomachs pumped, charcoal something, and IV for 3 days.  That being said.... My cats are alive and doing well.  Every time I called for an update it was given with no attitude and always said please call any time.  AND I DID!  haha  Billing was as is.  No extra charges.  They are realistic with you when explaining.  I would however say the checkin process needs to be standardized and streamlined so these crazy animal lovers dont get even more stressed by the unknown.  They were empathetic.  Its a hard sell though...  You dont want to come off as guilt tripping someone into paying a lot of money for their animal.  But they did a great job! We have had to visit Blue Pearl twice this year. Unfortunately we have to visit when our pets are sick and our regular vet is closed. We prefer Blue Pearl to care for our after hour pet care needs because we know they will treat our pets like family, and they have the advanced diagnosis tools needed to make sure they get it right the first time. They will also be honest with you with your options, and your pets quality of life.

Read Less
