We usually take our 10 year female pit to Manchester Banfield, but due to an emergency we're forced to take her to Kirkwood. Whenever I dropped my dog off, I asked them to make sure they keep an eye on her while she was kenneled because she likes to paw at the cage and we've had problems with her ripping her nails off before. I know they can't watch her 24/7, but if they were watching her they would have seen one of her nails was peeled back to almost the quick. They had my dog from 7:30 am-5pm whenever I called at 3pm, they had yet to take her to go potty and didn't take her until it was time for me to pick her up. On top of that, she drank a liter of water on the ride home and half her water bowl once we got home. Which makes me think they didn't give her water because she isn't a huge water drinker. Then, while talking to the vet she was informing me that my dogs most likely had cancer but there is a slight chance it could be pyometra, but she would be surprised if it wasn't cancer because she wasn't running a fever and even discussed a few cancer treatment options. While telling me all that she was laughing the whole time. Turns out it was pyometra and the vet special we took her to said no one should even speak of cancer until a pathologist looks at her. We usually take her to Manchester Banfield and would recommend them over Kirkwood ANYDAY. Read Less

They were very nice to me and my dog and took care of her for her "emergency" visit. Some more on why I gave them 3 stars. She's a small dog and had eaten some food she shouldn't have (table fed seasoned pork - no, no, no!) plus some huge new treats. She had diarrhea/gel-like/strange poops for three days (just past my limit of how long to leave something untreated). It was the weekend so I couldn't get her to her normal vet. They checked her out and suggested I have an x-ray done to see if she swallowed anything she shouldn't have. She's an indoor dog, is never far from my retired father, and doesn't put her nose into business she shouldn't, so I was almost certain she wouldn't have gotten into anything like bones or pins or something. I said so and they made me feel like you can never be too careful or sure and if we don't find something things could get worse and she could die... My emotions got the best of me, though, because the "what ifs" they proposed made me nervous. I had them go ahead with an x-ray. You know x-rays aren't cheap. They must have also x-rayed her head and told me she had a baby tooth that needed to be extracted and could cause her trouble down the line if it wasn't taken care of. Then they showed me their care plan for the year and that teeth care/cleaning is included (me: "oh, that's so handy!"). I said I would consider it and I meant it because I didn't want her teeth to cause her trouble. They did help me out a little and removed an office fee since it was my first time there (thank you). I'm still a little meh about the x-ray. I could have said no but I didn't want the "what if" situation worrying me constantly. My dog ended up having irritated intestines and was put on a low fat diet for a week or so and some inflammation medication. It worked very well and I am thankful she was OK.Today I took her to her regular vet and they said they could not see any trouble with her teeth (they advised what to watch for). They also said that the x-ray of her head shouldn't have been necessary, in their opinion, since there was something wrong with her stomach/intestines.With all that said, I would still probably go back for emergency vet services but I don't think I would get a care plan with Banfield. Her current vet suits her fine. Read Less

I recently moved here from Denver with my 10-year old partially-paralyzed Australian Shepherd. She has lost a lot of weight and is having some health issues but I hadn't found a local vet yet. I ran across an online coupon for Banfield Pet Hospitals (part of Petsmart) and since there is one close by, I called them for an appointment. The online coupon was for a free initial office visit. Our appointment was Tuesday, December 10. The Practice Manager greeted us and was friendly and took us to an exam room. Two other employees came in and out to ask questions and mention treatment options. After being in the exam room for at least an hour, one of them said she had talked to the vet and presented me with an estimate of services they suggested be performed. Mainly this was a full blood panel and urinalysis. The total estimate was almost $300! The last comprehensive office visit we had last year in Denver cost $80. It seemed awfully high and I told the tech this. Then the tech started describing their "Wellness Plans" they had available. She suggested a Wellness Plan that would include the recommended services at a total cost of about $500 for the year which would include two dental cleanings and unlimited office visits. At this point I had been there two hours and was anxious to get treatment for my pet, and the tech did not indicate that there were other options to obtain treatment. I expressed concern about dental procedures for such an old dog and stated I wouldn't be interested in those and tried to select a cheaper plan, but was told the vet recommended the more expensive plan. I signed some papers and then they took my dog "in the back" to allegedly get blood samples for testing. I thought this was odd since I'd never been in a vet office when I didn't actually see blood being drawn. After 2-3 hours, the vet finally came in and said all of the tests were "normal." She had no idea what was causing my dog's issues nor offered any suggestions. I was charged about $95.00 for the Wellness Plan "membership fee" and first months payment, plus a few dollars for meds that were prescribed. I asked for a detailed credit card receipt and was told that was impossible. I was handed a big booklet of papers which included an invoice of sorts and lots of other information which was very confusing. After we got home, I started reading through all of the paperwork I'd been given. I did some research online. Turns out Banfield's plans are "annual agreements." If your pet dies during the year, you have to keep making payments. The plan auto-renews. If you don't contact Banfield at exactly the right time, the plan will auto-renew whether or not you have a pet to have treated. The "unlimited office visits" only covers the $30 office visit fee and allegedly Banfield will stack on charges for additional services not covered by the plan. I decided I wanted nothing to do with this plan. I contacted the hospital manager and arranged to come in and just settle up for what I owed them and to cancel the plan. They were willing to cancel the plan, but they charged me another $350 on top of the $95 I already paid! I mentioned the estimate of services that I had signed and agreed to. The manager explained that because my dog was going to be on a Wellness Plan, they conducted a lot of other tests that were not part of the initial estimate (which I had NOT agreed to). I asked for a detailed, itemized invoice and was told they couldn't give me one. I paid $445 for tests and diagnostics but have no idea what was done or how much I was charged or if I was even charged the correct amount. I'm not even sure any tests were done since I never saw one drop of blood drawn. To add insult to injury, I was charged $10 for a "fecal sample collection fee." The "fecal sample" was something I had brought with me out of my car since my dog gets excited on car rides. :-) Needless to say, I will never use another Banfield ever again. Read Less

Read Less
