Gentle Doctor Animal Hospital, formerly known as Mapleview Animal Clinic, was founded in 1965 by Dr. T. Robert Bashara. The practice was first located at 9015 Ohio Street in Omaha, Nebraska. Dr. Bashara worked as a single practitioner of veterinary medicine there until 1981 when he hired his first associate.
As Omaha grew, so did the need for veterinary services further west. Dr. Bashara opened a second veterinary hospital in 1985 at 120th and Blondo, which was then called Candlewood Animal Hospital. After a few years, and substantial growth, a third associate was hired. Both hospitals kept three full-time associates very busy for the next few years, and in 1997, Dr. Peter Bashara, a recent Iowa State Veterinary Medicine graduate and the son of Dr. Bashara, returned to Omaha and joined the family business.
Omaha's continuing westward expansion once again required the need for veterinary services, and construction began to build a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital on the outskirts of the city. In 1999 the Gentle Doctor Animal Hospital was opened by Dr. Bashara and his son Dr. Peter Bashara at 153rd and Maple in the Torrey Pines shopping center. The business continued to grow and currently has 44 professional and non-professional employees.

Veterinarian
Dr. Pete Bashara is a 1997 graduate of Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He is an active member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, The Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association and The Nebraska Academy of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Pete Bashara serves on the board of directors for both the Nebraska Humane Society and The Doris Day Animal Foundation as well as maintaining an active membership with the Iowa State University Veterinary Medical Alumni Association. In 2007, Dr. Bashara received the Midwest Business Journal's small businessperson of the year. In 2009 Dr. Bashara received the Margret H. Durham Volunteer Recognition and in 2017 the Gentle Doctor Animal Hospitals won the Golden Biscuit Award in support for the Walk for The Animals. Dr. Bashara and his wife Andrea, an Omaha native, have two children. They also have three dogs, a cat and a turtle – all rescued from the Nebraska Humane Society.

Veterinarian
Dr. Bashara received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Iowa State University in 1963. After two years in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps, he opened the Mapleview Animal Clinic in 1965. The Candlewood Animal Hospital opened in 1985. Dr. Bashara is an affiliate member of the American Animal Hospital Association, a past officer of the Greater Omaha Veterinary Association, a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Nebraska Academy of Veterinary Medicine.
Practicing in Omaha for more than 40 years has given Dr. Bashara a unique perspective. He has watched the city grow westward, and the Gentle Doctor Animal Hospitals grow alongside it. He has treated generations of Omaha families' pets, and is proud to have continued a tradition of quality care, while incorporating leading-edge testing, equipment and procedures to the practice.
Dr. Bashara has passed his compassion for animals on to his son, Dr. Peter Bashara who followed him into the practice of veterinary medicine.

I have to say that Gentle Doctor Veterinary Clinic is a truly caring and compassionate clinic. Our Gigi was a 16 year old mini schnauzer who was going downhill for several months. We finally decided after long discussions, to have her put down because we just couldn't let her suffer any more. When we went to Gentle Doctor to help us with this very hard decision, they were so compassionate and professional thru the whole process. They have a separate room that we were escorte...d to that was off to the side of the office and out of the way of their normal area where all people bring in their pets to be seen. They gave us time to say our goodbyes and allowed us to sit with her for as long as we needed. As we were leaving that day, the staff all expressed their condolences as we walked out. The other very impressive and sweet thing they did for us was making a footprint of our Gigi in clay so we could have a memory of her. I thought it was such a sweet touch. About 4 days later, we received a sympathy card in the mail with the signatures of all the staff members and notes from the veterinarians that were there that day, along with the Over the Rainbow Bridge poem. I thought it was such a sweet and compassionate gesture on their part. As I read it, I cried all over again! I felt they all really understood our pain and did let us know that they understood how hard it was to say goodbye to one of the best dogs I ever had the pleasure of knowing. I would definitely recommend this clinic. They supported us in our decision and made us feel we i did the right thing. I have been very thankful of every person that has taken care of my dog while taking her there for her fractured leg until today. An employee called the Humanes society on me claiming very false accusations of her well being and that she wasn't being taken care of. This insulted me and my family more than enough to pull all of our 6 dogs out of that vet. It took be my surprise when I was called and informed that a home visit was going to be made to examine the well being of m...y dog and her living conditions. I have spent a fortune to try to heal her fractured leg just to be accused of mistreating my dog and now having to start her healing process all over again with a new vet. Her ACTUAL doctor confirmed with me when I went to pick her up from there today that there was no other injuries besides her fracture and that she knows my dog is very well taken care of. This was insulting and uncalled for. If your employees are not well aware of what a proper injury is ( the employing stating there was multiple other injuries on my dog ) then they should not be allowed to give medical advice. The rest of my family and I will not be bringing our dogs back here and my dog will miss all of the other wonderful employees who helped her along the way, such shame. See More

The service we and our fur babies have received has been incredible. We won't go anywhere else with our pets and you shouldn't either. With Ramesses, as soon as we noticed something was wrong with his eye they were able to get us in within a few hours on a Saturday morning. The veterinarians gave exemplary service to figure out wit...h was wrong with our senior cat. Unfortunately he did cross over the rainbow road earlier this year and Gentle Doctor truly went the extra mile for us to make sure we were comfortable with the process. When our cat Apollo was throwing up, they got us in right away. Luckily nothing too major was wrong, he was trying to eat carpet. They even asked about him today when I brought in our new kitten for her first checkup. Now with our newest kitten, Artemis, they were all friendly with our timid little girl. The techs and the veterinarian answered our questions about what shots she would still need and how we should introduce the cats; they were just so excited to meet her. My dog had always received great care there. The vet techs are amazing. I brought my big guy in for a condition called nasal arteritis which is common in Saint Bernards. The vet was not willing to meet me halfway with the recommended treatment and instead scared me into thinking it was probably cancer. I have a wonderful knowledgeable Saint Bernard group on Facebook who told me the recommended treatment he needed. The vet and vet tech pretty much told me her degree trumped everybody else's knowledge about this disease. She sent me home with 2 syringes of epinephrine which doesn't fix the main issue. I finally took my dog to a new vet who agreed with the diagnosis of nasal arteritis. Told me a biopsy could lead him to bleed out. Have me the proper medication treatment and he's doing so much better. I know vets have the degree but we live in the age of social media where we can research what our animals need. I'm absolutely blessed that I found this new vet who knew right away what my dog had without needing an unnecessary biopsy! Gentle Doctors are good for regular checkups but if your animals have any type of disease, be wary because they sometimes have the notion that their degree means more than what we learn on our own research!

All of the staff is amazing to my 2 pitties! The boys love coming to see all of the ladies there and the ladies are always quick to return all the love and kisses my boys love to give. They never make me feel slighted because my fur babies are a bully breed and they are always open, honest, ethical and helpful. They have never tried to upsell me on anything and if there are alternatives or at home things I can do to be preventative in my maintenance, they always share that information openly and honestly. Took my dog to Gentle Doctor for an exam to discuss a teeth cleaning and possibly a few extractions. They charged me $200 for that exam and the "pre cleaning blood work" that was "highly recommended"....

Got the official quote the next day... $1,005.13. What the?! Took him to another vet, who is very reputable, and the same exact quote was $375.00. Will NEVER go back to Gentle Doctor. Their main, and possibly only focus, is on "up-selling" you and apparently charging upwards of double for the exact procedure you could get somewhere else. This isn't about the money, I would pay endless amounts, if it's what my dog needed. It's about the pure robbery. The doctor was very nice, however, not $600+ worth of nice. Ridiculous.

One cat has to visit semi-regularly and, although she can hiss and is often mad at the world while there, everyone seems to take it in stride and does what they need to do without hesitation. I took our dog Brooke there for grooming today (April 20), and what a fantastic job Amy did with her. I highly recommend Gentle Doctor for grooming, and I likely will use them for her future healthcare needs. We've used the VCA clinic at 82 and Dodge with both dogs, and while they do a great job, it appears to be a bit overpriced. The hardest part of all this is that Brooke is 11 and showing signs of aging. It's going to be very, very hard to say goodbye when the time comes.

They have been great when our pets have been seriously ill. Jasper, our cat was treated for a blocked urethra a few years ago, our dachshund Nigel had a bladder infection, and our boxer Vinnie had pancreatitis last summer. All were treated promptly and professionally, The staff cares about the pets in their care and they receive plenty of TLC as well as the proper medical care. We are very happy with Gentle Doctor and love Dr. Thomassen!

My little Frankie has been visiting way too often these days, and yesterday we had to put him on meds again. Dr. Karen Stokes thanked me for giving my rescue pugs a better life. (Ugh...lump in my throat) she looks at me & my sick furbaby with so much empathy & compassion. We are so blessed. P.S. Pete Bashara
Veterinarian
Dr. Pete Bashara is a 1997 graduate of Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He is an active member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, The Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association and The Nebraska Academy of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Pete Bashara serves on the board of directors for both the Nebraska Humane Society and The Doris Day Animal Foundation as well as maintaining an active membership with the Iowa State University Veterinary Medical Alumni Association. In 2007, Dr. Bashara received the Midwest Business Journal's small businessperson of the year. In 2009 Dr. Bashara received the Margret H. Durham Volunteer Recognition and in 2017 the Gentle Doctor Animal Hospitals won the Golden Biscuit Award in support for the Walk for The Animals. Dr. Bashara and his wife Andrea, an Omaha native, have two children. They also have three dogs, a cat and a turtle – all rescued from the Nebraska Humane Society.

Veterinarian
Dr. Bashara received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Iowa State University in 1963. After two years in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps, he opened the Mapleview Animal Clinic in 1965. The Candlewood Animal Hospital opened in 1985. Dr. Bashara is an affiliate member of the American Animal Hospital Association, a past officer of the Greater Omaha Veterinary Association, a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Nebraska Academy of Veterinary Medicine.
Practicing in Omaha for more than 40 years has given Dr. Bashara a unique perspective. He has watched the city grow westward, and the Gentle Doctor Animal Hospitals grow alongside it. He has treated generations of Omaha families' pets, and is proud to have continued a tradition of quality care, while incorporating leading-edge testing, equipment and procedures to the practice.
Dr. Bashara has passed his compassion for animals on to his son, Dr. Peter Bashara who followed him into the practice of veterinary medicine.

I have to say that Gentle Doctor Veterinary Clinic is a truly caring and compassionate clinic. Our Gigi was a 16 year old mini schnauzer who was going downhill for several months. We finally decided after long discussions, to have her put down because we just couldn't let her suffer any more. When we went to Gentle Doctor to help us with this very hard decision, they were so compassionate and professional thru the whole process. They have a separate room that we were escorte...d to that was off to the side of the office and out of the way of their normal area where all people bring in their pets to be seen. They gave us time to say our goodbyes and allowed us to sit with her for as long as we needed. As we were leaving that day, the staff all expressed their condolences as we walked out. The other very impressive and sweet thing they did for us was making a footprint of our Gigi in clay so we could have a memory of her. I thought it was such a sweet touch. About 4 days later, we received a sympathy card in the mail with the signatures of all the staff members and notes from the veterinarians that were there that day, along with the Over the Rainbow Bridge poem. I thought it was such a sweet and compassionate gesture on their part. As I read it, I cried all over again! I felt they all really understood our pain and did let us know that they understood how hard it was to say goodbye to one of the best dogs I ever had the pleasure of knowing. I would definitely recommend this clinic. They supported us in our decision and made us feel we i did the right thing. I was so pleased with everyone who helped us! We had to put our little girl down and in the toughest times we all need others to care and they really showed us that they did. Our hearts were broken but we found the perfect place to help us with this decision and choice to let our little girl go to heaven in peace and out of pain. We recommend Gentle Doctor!!!! They even had a tree planted in memory of our dog, which means so much to our family. I highly recommend their services.

I have been very thankful of every person that has taken care of my dog while taking her there for her fractured leg until today. An employee called the Humanes society on me claiming very false accusations of her well being and that she wasn't being taken care of. This insulted me and my family more than enough to pull all of our 6 dogs out of that vet. It took be my surprise when I was called and informed that a home visit was going to be made to examine the well being of m...y dog and her living conditions. I have spent a fortune to try to heal her fractured leg just to be accused of mistreating my dog and now having to start her healing process all over again with a new vet. Her ACTUAL doctor confirmed with me when I went to pick her up from there today that there was no other injuries besides her fracture and that she knows my dog is very well taken care of. This was insulting and uncalled for. If your employees are not well aware of what a proper injury is ( the employing stating there was multiple other injuries on my dog ) then they should not be allowed to give medical advice. The rest of my family and I will not be bringing our dogs back here and my dog will miss all of the other wonderful employees who helped her along the way, such shame. See More

Gentle Doctor Animal Hospital has been nothing short of amazing for our little family. We’ve now had three cats treated at the various locations. The service we and our fur babies have received has been incredible. We won't go anywhere else with our pets and you shouldn't either. With Ramesses, as soon as we noticed something was wrong with his eye they were able to get us in within a few hours on a Saturday morning. The veterinarians gave exemplary service to figure out wit...h was wrong with our senior cat. Unfortunately he did cross over the rainbow road earlier this year and Gentle Doctor truly went the extra mile for us to make sure we were comfortable with the process. When our cat Apollo was throwing up, they got us in right away. Luckily nothing too major was wrong, he was trying to eat carpet. They even asked about him today when I brought in our new kitten for her first checkup. Now with our newest kitten, Artemis, they were all friendly with our timid little girl. The techs and the veterinarian answered our questions about what shots she would still need and how we should introduce the cats; they were just so excited to meet her. My dog had always received great care there. The vet techs are amazing. I brought my big guy in for a condition called nasal arteritis which is common in Saint Bernards. The vet was not willing to meet me halfway with the recommended treatment and instead scared me into thinking it was probably cancer. I have a wonderful knowledgeable Saint Bernard group on Facebook who told me the recommended treatment he needed. The vet and vet tech pretty much told me her degree trumped everybody else's knowledge about this disease. She sent me home with 2 syringes of epinephrine which doesn't fix the main issue. I finally took my dog to a new vet who agreed with the diagnosis of nasal arteritis. Told me a biopsy could lead him to bleed out. Have me the proper medication treatment and he's doing so much better. I know vets have the degree but we live in the age of social media where we can research what our animals need. I'm absolutely blessed that I found this new vet who knew right away what my dog had without needing an unnecessary biopsy! Gentle Doctors are good for regular checkups but if your animals have any type of disease, be wary because they sometimes have the notion that their degree means more than what we learn on our own research!

All of the staff is amazing to my 2 pitties! The boys love coming to see all of the ladies there and the ladies are always quick to return all the love and kisses my boys love to give. They never make me feel slighted because my fur babies are a bully breed and they are always open, honest, ethical and helpful. They have never tried to upsell me on anything and if there are alternatives or at home things I can do to be preventative in my maintenance, they always share that information openly and honestly. Been coming here for years with no plans to change. Thanks ladies! Buddy and Harambe love you all!!

Took my dog to Gentle Doctor for an exam to discuss a teeth cleaning and possibly a few extractions. They charged me $200 for that exam and the "pre cleaning blood work" that was "highly recommended"....

They charged me $200 for that exam and the "pre cleaning blood work" that was "highly recommended". I asked for a quote before I scheduled the cleaning. Got the official quote the next day... $1,005.13. What the?! Took him to another vet, who is very reputable, and the same exact quote was $375.00. Will NEVER go back to Gentle Doctor. Their main, and possibly only focus, is on "up-selling" you and apparently charging upwards of double for the exact procedure you could get somewhere else. This isn't about the money, I would pay endless amounts, if it's what my dog needed. It's about the pure robbery. The doctor was very nice, however, not $600+ worth of nice. Ridiculous.

The staff, doctors and techs are all fantastic with both our cats. One cat has to visit semi-regularly and, although she can hiss and is often mad at the world while there, everyone seems to take it in stride and does what they need to do without hesitation. They also handle the pet parents quite well -- their calmness is both reassuring and contagious.

I took our dog Brooke there for grooming today (April 20), and what a fantastic job Amy did with her. I highly recommend Gentle Doctor for grooming, and I likely will use them for her future healthcare needs. We've used the VCA clinic at 82 and Dodge with both dogs, and while they do a great job, it appears to be a bit overpriced. The hardest part of all this is that Brooke is 11 and showing signs of aging. It's going to be very, very hard to say goodbye when the time comes.

Our dog Sasha was very sick recently and the staff here gave her the best treatment we could have ever asked for. I thank them for answering all of my millions of questions as well. They have been great when our pets have been seriously ill. Jasper, our cat was treated for a blocked urethra a few years ago, our dachshund Nigel had a bladder infection, and our boxer Vinnie had pancreatitis last summer. All were treated promptly and professionally, The staff cares about the pets in their care and they receive plenty of TLC as well as the proper medical care. We are very happy with Gentle Doctor and love Dr. Thomassen!

Gentle Doctor Animal Hospital at 89th Grant St. has some of thee best vet techs & vets I have ever had the privilege of knowing. My little Frankie has been visiting way too often these days, and yesterday we had to put him on meds again. Dr. Karen Stokes thanked me for giving my rescue pugs a better life. (Ugh...lump in my throat) she looks at me & my sick furbaby with so much empathy & compassion. We are so blessed. P.S. Dr. Pete Bashara diagnosed my Joe pug's skin issue & it was cleared up after struggling with not knowing what it was for a year.
