DO NOT BOARD YOUR PETS HERE EVER THIS IS NOT AN EXOTIC VET THIS IS A DEATH TRAP DO NOT TRUST THEM I had a beautiful male panther chameleon, 4 and-a-half years old, in perfect health, and no prior health conditions. He is in critical condition due to injuries sustained here at this “clinic”. This is my story. Two weeks before my trip, I called Quail Ridge Animal Hospital, and a receptionist told me they are able to board chameleons. I told her the date of my flight and she said that would be fine, and she’ll be happy to take him for as long as I need him to be boarded. I called the morning of my flight and a different receptionist told me that they don’t know who spoke to me, that because they haven’t taken new clients due to renovations. She then said that because I had talked to someone who said it would in fact be ok, I can go ahead and bring him down. I asked if I needed to bring his set up or if a cage was ready for him. She said they had everything they needed to keep a chameleon, I did not need to bring his set up, just bring him. So I did. I drove him down and dropped him off. I had no idea I had signed him to a month of torture. I CALLED THEM, they did not call me. I called them at the end of December in the middle of my trip to check in and see how he was doing. They said he isn’t opening his right eye and they don’t know why, but the doctor was keeping an eye on it. When I received my pet, he was dehydrated, the end of his tail was rotten black, he was missing toes on one of his hands, he was bright red all over, and his eye was sunken in. As if to flaunt their incompetence to me, they kept congratulating each other on how well they took care of him (despite him being in obvious pain and sustained injuries) kept talking about how pretty he is (despite him being bright red THE COLOR OF PAIN) and kept proudly showing off their inhumane set up for him. THEY KEPT HIM IN A GLASS AQUARIUM. No wonder his tail rotted, ANYONE who knows chameleons would know that you NEVER keep them in glass aquariums. IF YOU DID NOT HAVE THE EQUIPMENT TO PROPERLY KEEP HIM THEN WHY DID YOU TELL ME TO LEAVE MY SETUP AT HOME. The worst injury was to his eye. Someone dropped him. They were playing with him like a toy and the dropped him. His eye showed all the signs of trauma due to a drop from a high height, much higher than what his small glass death trap would allow. His eye was bruised and cloudy, and recessed due to pain. Hewitt was unconcerned, and he should be fine in a few days. He has been fighting for his life ever since. This chameleon has a bruised eye due to mishandling and trauma inflicted to him by the staff. I took him back to Quail Ridge because they needed to fix the damage they had done to him. If she really wants to call herself an exotic vet, then she needs to do her job and save this animal whose life she destroyed. The receptionist said I should drop him off and throughout the day the vet would observe him. I did not want to put him back in the hands of his abusers, but I thought maybe she would undo the damage she and her staff caused him. She did not check on him throughout the day, she waited until after hours to look at him. At the end of the day googled photos of chameleon eye problems, and based off that ALONE decided there was a piece of shed in his tear duct. She based that off 1) he shed while there and 2) the way his eye was closed, bulging at the bottom, and sunken in at the top. There are MANY conditions that cause a chameleon to withdraw their eye in this way, that is a reflex they have control over when they are in PAIN, and a clogged tear duct WOULD NOT CAUSE THE CLOUDINESS ON THE CORNEA THE WAY A CORNEA ABRASION WOULD, I.E. SOMEONE ON HER STAFF DROPPED HIM WHILE PLAYING WITH HIM. She has no idea what she is doing, this is not an exotic vet with any experience, this is someone who googled some images and guessed. She does not care about anyone, she knows she screwed up and is trying to blame anyone but the people responsible for his obvious traumatic eye injury. Read Less

This is my regular vet and they're great! I've moved a lot and gone to a lot of vets for my dog and cat, and can say I love Quail Ridge Animal Hospital. They never try to pressure me into paying for anything unnecessary, their prices aren't exuberant, the staff truly cares and are very warm hearted, and overall they do a fantastic job. I've recently gone in for a mystery bump on my dog's nose and just yesterday got my dog his denta (great price for it, too, and yes I did shop around)l. They have me meds and advice for his nose that helped literally overnight, and my dog's teeth are now plaque and tartar free and my boy is as happy as can be with no complications (just got a follow-up call from them as I was typing this to make sure he was ok. I love that!). The only downside is they're no longer open on Saturdays. This is a vet I definitely trust and recommend to others. Read Less

I have never taken the time to write a negative review for anything because I don't think it should be taken lightly, however, in this instance I feel it's important to share my experience with others. You can choose what you do with this information. My dog died an undignified and painful death because of this office. This is long. Bear with me. I'm sure this office is a great place to take your pets for basic care and immunizations as everyone is very friendly and kind. However, if you have an animal with any, even slightly complex health issues, save yourself some heartache and take them to Carson Valley Vet on 88. Four days ago my 185 pound Great Dane was very lethargic, had collapsed and hadn't eaten in a few days and had a bout of very bloody, tarry diarrhea. Red flag. I took him in concerned this might be the end since he had been suffering from cancer and arthritis. I had been preparing myself for this and my primary concern was that he be comfortable and dignified when it came time to go. I explained my concerns and symptoms to the doctor. I even offered to show her a picture of the diarrhea. She declined. No request for a stool sample, no X-rays or ultrasounds suggested. I told her he hadn't eaten in 4 days. That he has collapsed that morning in the snow. She indicated that possibly his new meds were irritating his stomach lining and asked what we were giving him to help soothe and protect his stomach. Well, Dr. Hewitt, nothing, because you never told me I needed anything or that this would be such a nasty med for his body. That's her job, right? I'm not a vet or a pharmacist. His pulse was very high and he even had a heart murmur. She suggested subcutaneous fluids, some barium and anti-nausea meds ($100 shot even though he wasn't vomiting). Then she sent us home. I know vets aren't magicians or miracle workers but this seemed a little egregious. At home he declined rapidly. He was in great pain and couldn't stand up. At 9:30pm I called the emergency after hours line and left a message (the recording indicated that someone should call back within 15 min), I waited 45 min. No one called. Ever. I just wanted them to tell me if I needed to get him in to an emergency vet or if it was normal since they had treated him that day. We then decided to call Carson Valley Vet and they picked up right away (and were amazing- but that's another review). While on the phone with the doctor, my dogs pain began to get severe and he began hemorrhaging copious amounts of blood from his rear end. I watched my beautiful, sweet dog suffer and bleed out on my living room floor as he panicked and struggled to take his last breath. We should have had the opportunity to euthanize him at the vets office. He was obviously already bleeding internally as evidenced by his tarry stool that no one wanted to see or test apparently.I heard from Dr Hewitt a day later and tried to explain what happened and she had tons of excuses and platitudes. Like after I told her that my dog didn't deserve to die like that, she responded with 'your dog didn't deserve to have cancer'. And other things that felt contrite and insincere. What was lacking was genuine remorse or concern.  Lacking was any sense of real compassion for my situation instead an acute desire to excuse, excuse, excuse.  She tried to say the right things but it was rehearsed and trite. Then today I went in to the office to speak with her and I asked her what she thought happened to make him die like that. When I brought up the bleeding, she commented that often animals will bleed after they die. Wait. What? Did she not hear ANYTHING I told her? My dog bled TO death. I made that abundantly clear. I described his condition and last moments in detail. She said, 'oh, I must have not heard that right'. Herein lies the biggest problem with this office. They don't HEAR you. She didn't hear us describing our concern at the visit when my dog was sick, and she didn't hear us when we explained to her what happened that evening. A lack of good listening skills along with what I feel is just not an experienced vet for anything even mildly complex leads me to my conclusion that bringing my dog here was a very, very bad idea that I regret a million times over. The ONLY thing they did 'right' was agree to refund the almost $400 we spent on him from our visit the day he died. Now, please be clear, they didn't offer this. We had to ask. Sad. I've managed businesses in the healthcare field for many years and I've had disgruntled customers, I've had ones that we screwed up royally on (it happens) and let me tell you, I always treat them how I would want to be treated. I feel their pain. And I feel BAD and whatever I can humanly do to absolve myself, I would do without prompting. So, now you have my personal experience to use when trying to find the right vet for your pet. And if your pet is a true member of your family that you love, like mine was, I'd keep looking. While I do appreciate their services for helping save my animal's life, I would not suggest this vet to anyone. The front end is polite, but the actual Vet Staff are snobby and rude. They misdiagnosed my cat once and then when they found out the real problem, they said it was my fault for not changing his diet to their prescription food after the first visit (which was not their recommendation AT ALL). After this next diagnoses (which was supposed to cost close to $700 to fix), I accepted the chargers to save my animals life. After paying that and coming to get him the next day, I was told that what I had paid was just the deposit and that there was another $100 fee on top of it. I was not upset about the money. I would have paid $800 the first day without hesitation. However, the fact that I had already had a stressful 24-36 hours because my cat was going through this procedure and then they tell me that I owe MORE just to take my cat home is poor practice. I pay the bill, then agree to put my cat on this prescription medication to prevent further procedures. That was totally fine. However, when I was given a cup each of the different types of food they have and it is finally decided which one he likes, I had ordered it online because it is MUCH cheaper than buying it through the vet. A delay in receiving the food means that I could not continue his diet unless the Vet would be willing to give me enough food to last from then until when I would get the food in the mail. Upon calling them, they told me that they would only be able to give me a 16lb bag for nearly $50 rather than giving me a baggy full that would last until I could get the food (which I would have happily paid for!) that I ordered. My cat would hardly go through a 6.3lb bag of any other dry food before it would start going stale, let alone a 16lb bag that I would have to throw away half of a year later. All in all, very poor service. They may have some of the best prices in the area, but those prices come with a cost. 2/10. I would not recommend that you take your animal to this vet. Read Less

Read Less
