No thanks to CARSON TAHOE VETERINARY HOSPITAL I lost my best friend today. We went to the carson river to cool off and something bad started to happen to my dog Buster Douglas. I called this so called 24 hour emergency vet and they turned me away telling me no one could help me and to drive to Gardnerville on the way there he started to get worse and I decided I wasn't going to take no for an answer so I pulled in and rushed in the door to see a lady and a guy holding 2 dogs on a leash looking like their about to go for a nice walk, but it was to late, I lost my best buddy because this terrible place turned me away when ever second counts! YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE FOR HIM! And then after the girl confirmed that buster died the girl told my wife about a cremation place they use but told her their closed today and didn't offer to take him or nothing so I had to have my wife go in ask if they would. HEARTLESS PLACE! TAKE YOUR EMERGENCY VET SIGN DOWN! Read Less

They really care about animals. Prices are reasonable not cheap. Emergency clinic is also a plus. There are fancier places in the valley but being available and not pushing unneeded procedures and meds is a huge plus. Read Less

Don't ever take your precious animals here. I brought my 12 year old dog in here because she was acting as if she ate something toxic. I called worried about my dog, they told me to bring her in. When I got there they immediately said she had eaten marijuana. I explained to them that I didn't think she got into any. They continued to say that was the cause. A month later the exact same thing happened with my dog. I called the hospital again and they said they remembered me from last time and said the exact same thing! I explained how that was impossible this time. They called me a liar! I took my dog to her normal Vet and turns out my poor dog was getting sick from our kitchen floor cleaner!!!!! Can you imagine the damage that has now been done to my animal caused by this judgmental staff? Don't harm your animals any further by bringing them here! Read Less

I've been taking my two German Shepherds to Carson Tahoe Veterinary Hospital (CTVH) for several years.  The experience has been great.  In addition to being an Emergency Hospital, they are also a regular (non-emergency) vet practice. I've used them for both purposes and it has worked out great.When we moved to Minden/Gardnerville in 2014, everyone recommended a large vet practice in that local area -- BUT we did not have a good experience at that OTHER practice (problems too numerous to list here.  It was a mess!) Unlike the OTHER experience, CTVH has been great, both for injury / surgery situations as well as general medical evaluation, diagnosis, checkups, vaccinations, etc.  Here's what I like about CTVH:#1)  Have always received good medical care with courses of action that made sense to me. Vets will engage in informative discussion and explanation.  I work in a scientific field, have a scientific degree, and grew up in a medical family (father, uncles, sister, cousins are all M.D.'s).  So, I am an educated and informed medical consumer. I have always been happy with the quality of care and medical judgements. #2)    It's a 24 x 7 Emergency Hospital.  They are equipped to do almost anything. My dogs get into sh** at the worst possible times -- so having CTVH as my regular vet means that emergencies are not a "foreign experience".  Plus, I'm never stuck with an issue that my regular vet can't handle, or where my dog can't be kept overnight, etc.   Several friends live too far away (S. Lake Tahoe) to make CTVH their regular vet, but they have been to CTVH for emergencies.  When their S. Lake Tahoe vets were taking a 'wait and see' attitude or simply weren't open, they needed more extensive or immediate treatment. One case was a dog with possible poison ingestion.  Vet in S. Lake Tahoe was saying "probably nothing", "see how he looks tomorrow".  Friend took dog to CTVH where they were able to do full stomach pump, introduction of activated charcoal, and full supportive measures. [Dog recovered, BTW]#3)    I've never had any trouble getting an appointment (both emergency and non-emergency).  Can you say that about your current vet? They understand there are 3 categories of need: 1. Right now, as fast as you can drive here; 2. Sometime today or at latest tomorrow; 3. A general appointment that fits my schedule.  They do this triage over the phone and have never failed to provide me a convenient appointment that fits the medical need.#4)    Unless outright emergency, can easily schedule to see the same vet on an ongoing basis.  This allows development of a relationship with the practitioner; vet knows the animal's history. This is an extremely important factor in receiving good medical care.#5)   I actually LIKE their approach to discussing fees / costs up front and frankly.  Several of the hater reviews on here seem stuck on this point.  I think vets who force the owner to inquire about cost (which is how most practices operate these days) are actually taking advantage of people in a weak moment.      Since Carson Tahoe Veterinary Hospital does a lot of Emergency work,  they are often seeing people / animals on a 1X, emergency basis.  They MUST be clear about the charges -- and options for doing things differently for different costs -- up front.  If not, they would end up holding the bag on a lot of procedures and would quickly be out of business.  We, in the community, would then suffer.  Would you rather have a surprise bill at the end?  OR, would you rather have no Emergency Hospital AT ALL in Carson City and have to drive to Reno???    So, man-up people, and just have the discussion about what stuff is going to cost with the vet. Realize that they need to do this to be a sustainable business. #6) They actually MANAGE their waiting room... What I mean is: They are aware that a sick cat and an injured Pit Bull probably won't mix well and make sure that those two animals will not encounter each other. They will realize who's coming in, who's going, and will manage and inform on the situation. (This place actually has a separate cat entrance with sign out front directing cat owners to it!)In summary, I recommend this vet.  I've been a multiple-dog-owner for over 20 years and have been to numerous vets, in both California and Nevada.  One thing to be aware of -- if you are going to CTVH for the first time -- is that the facility itself is not a sparkling, new building.  Don't confuse cleanliness and capabilities with interior decorating.  CTVH is not a Beverly Hills vet experience and you are not going to be offered Evian water while you are waiting... This might matter to you, but I can guarantee your pet will not care. Read Less

Our dog was severely injured in an accident.  As other vets were closed, we took him to Carson Tahoe and he was seen by Dr Hittenmiller.  The front office experience seemed more about money than the condition of our dog.  We were over a barrel so went along with their recommendation for surgery.  We were discouraged from seeing our dog during the exam as well as while he was there.  When we did see him we were appalled at his condition.  Had we known what was really going on, we would have ordered euthanasia.  He died horribly.  It broke our hearts and our bank account.If you have suffered a bad experience here, call the NEVADA BOARD OF VETERINARY MEDICAL EXAMINERS AT 775-688-1788.  As far as I know, It doesn't matter when your experience took place.For an after hours emergency call Carson Valley Vet Clinic in Minden.  A vet will meet you there after hours. My 2 1/2 year old golden retriever put a toad in her moth and began foaming at the mouth, i started freaking out so i called this place since it was the only place open at 3am. I spoke with DR. Rishwain and had told him of the foaming and the locked jaw. He was quick with a solution and had told me to give her peroxide and sure enough that made her vomit the poison out. Im not one to leave any kind of reviews, but this guy was so freaken awsome on the phone, cool as a cucumber, in control and  super knowledgeable and saved me a TON of money by telling me what to do over the phone rather than have me come in. Was on vacation last week when my dog became ill and lethargic. Went to this clinic for help as it was closest to where we were staying. BROKEN HEARTED!!!! iF i AM ABLE TO SPARE EVEN ONE PET OWNER THE GRIEF THIS PLACE HAS CAUSED, PLEASE READ!!! Dr. Rishwain killed my animal, even worse he instructed me to over hydrate my cat with subQ fluids so much that I actually killed him!!! On June 28,2017 I took my cat Tux of seventeen years to Dr. Rishwain at the Carson Tahoe Veterinary Hospital.I live in Tahoe and my cat had been missing for a few days, we suspect he was stuck in a tree due to the coyotes.my cat Tux was exhausted and dehydrated. At the time Tux came home this clinic was the only place open.We were seen by Dr. Rishwain. My cat was walking around purring and rubbing against the exam table, but he was dehydrated and needed some fluids.Dr. Rishwain administered 100 ml subcutaneous (under the skin)fluids.which is a lot for an eleven pound animal. I figured he had been away from home for almost four days and the Dr. knew best.We were sent home with an IV bag and instructions to administer 100 ml sub Q fluids every eight hours.We followed what the Dr. told us to do.The following morning Tux seemed worse as he had been playing, purring and rubbing against the exam table the prior night. I immediately took him to another Vet. here in Tahoe.We had blood work and Xrays done. The Dr said there was a small amount of fluid in his lungs and prescribed him an antibiotic telling us within a day or so he should be fine. We went home and continued to give him his sub Q fluids 100 ml each eight hours  as Dr. Rishwain had ordered,also his antibiotic..My cat started having fluid come out of his nose and VERY large pockets of water around his neck and lungs where we were administering the fluid.I called Dr. Rishwain at the Carson Tahoe Clinic to tell them what was happening.I was informed it was Dr. Rishwains day off and told to continue following  Doctor's orders even thou  the amount we had already given him was way too much.Again, I figured Dr. knows best..The third day came and things were so much worse. My cat had water pockets as big as human breasts around his armpits and breathing was becoming impossible.His whole upper body felt squishy like Jello We panicked and began looking up feline sub Q fluids on the internet where we found a cat his size should not be given more than 60 ml of fluids every two to three days per The American Feline association. Dr. Rishwain had us giving him 300 ml. per day.This is more than six times the suggested amount per the American Feline association.We  called Dr. Rishwain again at Carson Tahoe Veterinary telling him our beloved cat was now very close to drowning in his own fluids, Dr. Rishwain  panicked telling us to return to Carson City immediately for a free visit to tap Tux's chest in order to remove some of the unnecessary fluids he had prescribed him. We immediately loaded Tux up in the car to return to this death clinic to attempt to have Dr. Rishwain save our beloved cat of seventeen years. I made it less than a mile from my home when our cat began drowning in his own body. Tux died there in the car.I was hysterical and phoned Dr. Rishwain and recorded the call.I explained to him I had read online an animal this size should have NEVER been given this amount of fluids.Dr. Rishwain panicked and said he was so sorry, he said he had never KILLED an animal before and quickly offered me compensation. I have ALL of this recorded!!! I will be retaining legal council and filing a malpractice suit against the clinic and Dr. Rishwain I will also be attempting to have his license revoked. My family and I are broken hearted and no amount of "compensation" will ever bring back our beloved family member tux.my life will never be the same after the trauma of killing my own animal by following Dr. Rishwains orders. Please DO NOT bring your animal to this death clinic. Tux had a much better chance of survival here at home. A FOLLOW UP: I spoke with the office manager(Naomi) regarding  Tux's death. She informed  me that Dr. Rishwain would be terminated immediately. She also informed me Dr. Rishwain was to be working under another Vet as he was not even  licensed to practice emergency veterinary  medicine while alone. The office Mgr.said Dr. Robert Rishwain  was to be overseen by a Dr. who was apparently ASLEEP in the apartment upstairs. The Dr that was to be overseeing Dr. Rishwain NEVER even knew we were there. .AGAIN, I recorded this conversation I have contacted the Nev. Veterinary board and filed a complaint including audio tapes with CTVH, also hired an attorney and sent audio tapes to the better business bureau. These audio tapes speak for themselves. One night, one of my cats suffered what we later learned was a blood clot. Over the following two months, they have helped me with Stitch, and are enabling him to continue to live a wonderful life. Was so surprised to see bad reviews that I felt compelled to write my own good review. Have always had great experiences with Carson Tahoe Vet. It is not the prettiest / best interior decorated vet clinic in the world, but it has everything I value: 1. ) It's a full fledged, 24 hr. emergency and surgical facility. So, no problems when your pet is injured or sick on evenings, weekends, holidays. 2.) Staff is always very accommodating and even for regular (non-emergency, non-middle of the night visits) it is super easy to get an appointment and ... 3.) For regular appts. (and luckily on one emergency) I have always been able to see the same Vet. The above things are hard to find, and I USED to go to an clinic in the Minden-Gardnerville area that everyone raves about -- but it didn't equate to good care. We took my Chihuahua there since there was nothing open in Tahoe (where I live) and we needed to get her to help so we went ahead and drove to Carson and unfortunately we didnt get there on time and my little girl passed away. The female and male that worked there were very nice and told us about the options we had. I decided for her to get cremated and pick the first box that was presented to me. On my ride back home I remembered they gave me the option to get her paw imprints. So once i got home i asked my friend to please call them and tell them i did want that i didn't care how much i had to pay. They asked us to please call the next morning because they were handling an emergency at the time. The next daybwe called again and requested it. The guy took my card info and charged it for the additional fee. Well i was called a week later to go pick up by babies ashes and notcied that the prints were not in the bag they gave me. My boyfriend went in and asked and said to call tomorrow that the new guy was probably who took our request. The next morning i got a call saying they were sorry but that the note they made on it got lost and wanted to "make it right" and refund me my money. The money isn't even what i want i want what i ordered and would pay all the money in the world for her paw prints.. But now there is nothing that can be done I am soo upset that they were quick to take my money but couldn't follow through with assuring that my order was in. Im soo heartbroken because my dog was a very expressive pup and would love using her paws to communicate with us. So it meant more than just a paw print to us. Read Less

We brought our dog to Carson Tahoe over the weekend because it was the closet clinic open. She ended up having a simple ear infection. Upon arrival we were told she needed to be sedated to clean and look at her ear. This was concerning as she is 13.5 years old. We trusted the doctor. He used Ketamine to sedate her. She was returned to us barely able to stand, confused, scared and didn't recognize her owners. She CRIED for 20 HOURS. When we called to follow up after 12 hours we were told this was normal. When we returned to our regular doctor we were told they never would have sedated her and would absolutely not have used ketamine; they said it was NOT normal for her to cry for 20 hours. They removed her from ALL medications prescribed by Carson Tahoe. Absolutely worse experience we have had with a vet clinic in 13 years. Will never return. Read Less

My cat was suffering from kidney stones and didn't think he would make it through the night so I went here as a last resort due to their reputation.  The guy at the front desk wouldn't lift a finger until I filled out the forms and made a hefty down payment.  Seriously, what other vet makes you pay in advance???  While completing my forms as fast as possible, my cat was howling in pain and the guy made a remark saying "wow, is that your cat making that noise?"  Yes!  Cause he's in freaking pain and you won't touch him until you greedy people get money first.  Weird part was that when I went to pick my cat up two days later, one of the vet techs said she had bonded with my cat and bought it toys and everything.  And she looked at me as if she just wanted me to say "ok, you can have him".  Sorry lady, I just dropped a ton of money on him, he's mine for life.  I gave 2 stars only because they did take care of him as soon as I signed my credit card receipt and he made a full recovery.  They also let me stop by the day after dropping him off and let me in the back to say hi and check up on him. First visit with my dog, treatment didnt solve issue. Second visit , no charge. Dispensed different meds and the dog's issues were resolved.  I was satisfied.  By reading the reviews, I suggest a STRONG office manager. Also, vets differ in experience and knowledge.  Owners should stay on top of whose good and which Doctor needs to look for a different place to practice.Great bedside credentials help overcome any iffy medical treatment . I was looking for a vet for our 4 animals. I called every single vets office in Carson City. The person that handled my call and questions was absolutely wonderful! They were able to get me in within a couple of days, (only needed to bring in one of the four). There is a very comfortable feel there and the staff is wonderful! They have really great staff here. I was more than satisfied with how they stitched my poor dog's neck back together, but obviously not thrilled I had to be there in the first place. They were good about sticking with appointment times, made sure to call me a few days ahead to confirm scheduling (since I had to drive in from Reno), and were really friendly and genuinely interested in helping out my dog! Very uncooperative and unhelpful. Went in to buy a bag of prescription dog food. Was told they cannot sell without a prescription from a nationally recognized vet business. When I produced the appropriate prescription, was told that they couldn't sell it because the dog had not been seen there. When I pointed out that the dog had been seen there I was told "Well, that was too long ago". We're talking about a bag of dog food for crying out loud! This was nothing but just plain nastiness for absolutely no reason. Won't be bringing the dog back there, that's for sure. Read Less

I brought my dog in for an emergency for a wounds from a dog fight. They treated the situation with urgency, and were compassionate about my concerns for my labrador. I find comfort in knowing that there is an after hours and weekend hospital that I can trust with my furry critter family without having to travel so far up to Reno from Lyon County. Read Less

I would leave no stars if that was an option. Our daughter had reason to think her beloved cat had consumed antifreeze. This was the nearest vet office that was open. Knowing that the cat may have ingested a fatal toxin, they made an appointment for approximately 2 hours after she called. When she arrived, she was not acknowledged by the office staff. The vet spoke to her for about 3 minutes, told her it was too early to run tests, and there was no treatment available. She was told to take her cat home and wait for it to die, then charged $98 after doing nothing. We called the vet office in Minden and were told, yes there is treatment. She brought the cat to their office where blood was drawn, because the toxin is recognizable in the bloodstream within 30 minutes. That is not what the other vet said. Incompetent, heartless, greedy? We were told that if antifreeze was present the standard treatment was an alcohol drip given intravenously. The other vet said no treatment was available. Fortunately, the cat had not ingested antifreeze, and we had a happy ending. The malpractice of the other office could have contributed to the death of her cat if circumstances had been different. It took us a week, after multiple attempts, to make contact with the office manager. Though they are a 24-hour facility, the phone is rarely answered. She denied any wrong doing on the part of their office, and refused a refund. We are filing a dispute claim with our credit card company. It is shameful that people in a time of need, and emotional vulnerability are being taken advantage of by Carson Tahoe Veterinary Hospital. Read Less

They saved my 3 dogs lives . Our lovely dogs Tahoe a 10 year old golden retriever , Trusty a 7 month old bluetick coon hound and Biggie 5 year old chihuahua . They all suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning and were very ill. We were told that they were equiped to handle this and they did all three dogs came home and are making a great recovery Thank you carson Tahoe vet hospital I am so happy to have my dogs home and I owe it all to you guys Read Less

Had to see the DR for my little cat eye and I called at 8:40pm on a Sunday and spoke to Naomi and she was extremely helpful in this stressful situation. I was able to get my cat in within 30 mins of my call. I'm happy to report now my Cats eye is back to being healthy and he's Perfect!! Thank you!!!! Read Less

Dr. Don Hittenmiller and Dr. Lisa Lewis are amazing. They helped my 15 week old puppy survive a horrible case of gastroenteritis. She had a 104.9 temperature consistently for almost 24 hours. They communicated with me non-stop and really cared. They were so happy when she recovered, called for follow ups and are just genuinely good people. All the ladies working up front were so friendly and caring as well. I strongly suggest them for an emergency or general vet appt. I am moving from my vet in Tahoe to them after my experience. I can't explain how grateful I am to go to a vet who cares about the pets and their owners!Read Less

Worst experience ever with any vet, particularly because it was an emergency situation. My 18 month old pup had a bizarre incident that fractured his rear leg in 2 places. Got there to find a locked door. Called the # on the door and was advised that someone would immediately be there to open up a supposedly already open business. First discussion was not about the condition of my pup, but rather how much it would cost. Was advised that the vet was upstairs and would be down shortly. Person who took vitals was obviously not trained... was unclear on how to take a temp, and took his pulse by looking at his stomach and looking at her  watch! Huh?? Basics proved too much for her. When the vet finally made it downstairs, we were told that he would meet with the puppy privately, we were not allowed in the room, so that he could assess the dog's temperament. When he met with us he never told us his name, never got up from his chair...was extremely condescending, rude and arrogant. Concern was about money, not the dog. I could go on and on...the place is filthy, the staff not knowledgeable or qualified. Fortunately we were able to find out that Carson Valley Vet Hospital  in Minden was open until 11 pm for Saturday emergencies. We paid $98 to get out of there, a far cry from what they wanted to do who knows what... we then raced over to CVVH...a truly wonderful experience during a difficult time. Point is, Carson Tahoe veterinary is a horrible place, animal lovers beware. Place should be shut down before they kill someone's beloved pet. Read Less

I can't speak for the vets here. For all I know they are great. Unfortunately I can't comment on them because I didn't get past the person answering phones. I ended up driving all the way to Reno from South Tahoe because the person who answered my call was extremely rude, unhelpful and condescending. I'm not going to put my dog in the hands of someone who doesn't seem the least bit compassionate and this guy was a HUGE jerk. I would avoid them if you can. Read Less

I have had a few experiences with this Vet. 1. A few months ago my dog got in a fight with something... and we took her here to patch her up.  She was very fluffy at the time and we didn't know how severe her injuries were at first just that she was bleeding and panting and crying.  I was hoping to be able to take her home same day (for dog mommy reasons but also for money reasons).  They recommended I leave her over night though so I did.  When I got her home the next day and examined her wounds, I think she could have come home the first day as the wounds were not as extensive as I thought.  Basically two smallish punctures.  But, I don't want to fault them for over care as that is better than not enough care.2.  I needed to reup my dog's rabies shot and I called to make an appointment.  I was advised that they do 20$ vaccinations with exams on Tuesdays and Sundays from 11-1. I went in for that and was impressed by the care for that price.I'm surprised by all the negative reviews because my experience has never been bad there! Read Less

Awful.  Had an emergency on a weekend had to go here.  Ultimately they fixed my dog but AWFUL service & was price-gouged because of the weekend "emergency room" visit.  Place is dirty & lots of SHADY practices going on.  In hindsight should have driven to Reno.  If that were my business I'd fire everyone & bulldoze the place. I don't leave reviews, I'm the person that only reads them but the experience I just had deserves the effort.  I just got back from taking my 4 month old Shepard mix to Dr. Who the hell knows, after I discovered my pup was dripping blood out of his rear end. I drove down from south lake in a panic and in tears, not knowing what was going on with my pup. Upon my arrival the vet tech asked me the usual questions...during the process my puppy began whining and crying and yes more blood on the floor.  No one seemed to care about the blood or the fact that I was becoming more and more frightened about his condition.  Once they let me in to a exam room it was time to take his temp.  I tried to hold him for the vet tech but he screamed and cried so much he attracted the attention of the actual "vet" who came in to assist. As soon as she walked in she went straight for the dog and didn't even glance at me.  After she failed to restrain him, she then snapped at the vet tech "is it any better if she holds him?"  "She" who is me standing two feet from this woman who never told me her name. Finally we got a temp but in the process my puppy had the runs all over the floor.  When the vet noticed what he had done, her first reaction was "is it all over me!?"  This was shocking as I have been a dog owner for over 14 years and have gotten this, that and the other thing all over me...I can't imagine what vets get to endure but apparently a little poop on this Vet's shoe would have ruined her night! So there was that, then there was the fact she kept calling my male dog a "her"...over and over again even after I corrected her.  And then it came to what type of care I wanted to go with...I luckily had some options and when they were explained I opted out of the X-ray and went for the meds. and the "wait and see" option.  It wasn't about money but more about my dog's current state, which was pretty good...the vet however definitely thought it was about money and that I didn't have any.  That's when she started being rude...On my way out my dog had some more squirts on the floor and this time without blood (yay!). I pointed out the accident and asked a question about why there was no more blood. The vet then snapped at me "I keep telling you the only way I would know is with an X-ray" ...this lead me to head straight to the counter to pay my tab.  Thank god for the vet tech girl. She was super friendly and helpful. She actually addressed more of my questions then the vet did and also made sure that I reduced his food consumption during his treatment period, which the vet said nothing about! I've done the emergency vet thing more than once and it's always scary but I've always left with a better grasp of what's going on with my pet and with a feeling of comfort.  Not this time, this time I wanted to get me and my sick pup out of there as quick as possible. Thanks for the care Dr. Has no bedside manner.Update: found out the Vet's name was Kristin Clark and from the research I've done it appears she lost her license in 2007 for substance abuse, was reinstated in 2008, then on probation in 2010 and during that probational hearing she stated she was moving out of state...at this point I'm not even sure she's a licensed vet! It was the middle of the night and my dog had been hit by a car. Animal Control had found him and brought him to Carson Tahoe Veterinary Hospital. They delivered emergency care and saved my dogs life. The staff there went above and beyond to try and find out who his owner was. Through different avenues, we were contacted and notified that our dog was being treated and hospitalized. We went straight in and were well informed of our dogs condition and what treatment had been done to save his life.
