Damonte Ranch Animal Hospital

We moved here in November and soon after realized our Weimaraner's mouth was bothering her. She had two large sores in her mouth. Another vet couldn't tell us anything after several visits and so we went to Damonte Ranch Animal Hospital and met with Dr. Carr. When we got in there he had already requested her prior vet records and researched the possible causes. He was extremely knowledgeable and our dog immediately fell in love with him. He was so good with her and put us at ease. He decided to do a biopsy since she had these sores for months and they wouldn't get better with medications and they kept growing.After the biopsy, he kept checking on her and was able to tell us exactly what the problem was. The sores are finally healing and we are so relieved. Everyone that works there is so nice and well prepared. We've never had to wait more than 5 minutes and they get us exactly what we need quickly. The office is clean and it all makes for a great experience. We can't say enough good things about them! Read Less

Just moved my 13 year old black lab mix & 7 year old Yorkie from So Cal.  My Yorkie was due for vaccines and I wanted to find a vet close to my new home.  I called late on a Saturday and was able to get in on the next Saturday (early - yea)!  Even though my lab was not due for vaccines until July, I brought her along thinking it would be nice to get both dogs on the same schedule.  The reception desk was SUPER friendly and accommodated me.  The facility did not have a disinfectant smell which typically makes my dogs very nervous.  I had the option to have the Vet come into the room with me and inspect the dogs one at a time or they could both be taken back and done at the same time.  I chose option two and my dogs were not freaked out at all!  The check up and ALL shots (5 each) totaled $131 - LOVE THIS PLACE.  Dr. Shelby Baker then came out and talked to me about my pets for a good 5 minutes.  I truly feel that my animals are in great hands here.  I highly recommend. I moved from north/west Reno to Damonte Ranch about two years ago. I have been reluctant to leave my vet on the north end of town because they know my dogs well and have never disappointed me but they are far and cannot always get us in right away. There have been 3 different occasions however, where the situation was dire enough or honestly simple enough that I felt compelled to just take my dog (or dogs) to the closest vet, which happens to be Damonte Ranch Animal Hospital. In my experience, they are very accommodating. They have always been able to get my pets in at a moment's notice, something that my original vet is not fantastic about, and the vet is thorough, knowledgeable and kind. I have only ever seen Dr. Carr but my experiences are all very positive!! Read Less

I would like to start out with the fact that I have NEVER done a review before! There's is nothing worse than a doctor charging you once you reach the counter for checkout, for what you thought was nothing more than a routine procedure. The doctor suggested a certain eye drop medication for my dog for dry eye which I said I was happy to purchase. Then she said, " I would like to do a quick tear strip test on him just to see IF he is producing any tears on his own". I said ok... Thought she was doing it just to reiterate why the eye drops were needed even though I already said I was going to purchase them. She also neglected to mention when she wanted to do the test, that the cost was 30.00 to stick a test strip in his eyes for 60 seconds. That part was only told to me at checkout. I argued the 30.00 charge and her reply was " you said it was ok". I said well I am grateful that the test wasn't 100.00 since you didn't tell me there was a cost for it till the end. They still charged me... Seriously! I told them I will not be coming back to their facility. They need to be upfront with costs as too not have their customers surprised at Undislosed costs as well as having the need to ask when a thermometer is stuck up their dogs behind, if there will be a charge for that. Doctor was knowledgable, but doesn't let you get a word in edgewise. She cut me off many times on top of all else. With the constant talking on her part, she should have been able to fit in telling me about the 30.00 charge. All in all, it's not about the 30.00, but the principal. Read Less

When you hear a vet's name from 3 separate people in 3 years, you know they must be amazing! And Dr. Shelby Baker is! She is SO caring about every animal who walks in the door, it should shame other vets in town!Dr. Baker has been all 4 of our animals' vet for years now, & she is very, very thorough. I found Dr. baker difficult to deal with.   We had a very stressful situation going on where the estimated cost of the procedures was very high.  In fact if all eventualities had played out, it could have exceeded 5k per her estimates and amounts already paid.   I was never able to get a comfort level that I was getting a complete picture in order to asses the situation.   Dr. Baker consistently used medical jargon that I only had a limited understanding of. In the end I decided I needed one night to decide what to do and was made to feel as though I should not be a pet owner as I was not prepared in an instant, to commit to "whatever" needs my pet required.I sought a second opinion and found the other vet much easier to work with and honestly much more cost effective.  To be fair the diagnosis Dr. Baker made ended up being correct.  I had the procedure done at the second vet, and ended up paying much less.In my opinion her clinical skills were accurate but her "bedside manner" and her cost structure were lacking. Dr Baker was super informative about the procedure beginning and after. She also called me today to follow up to make sure he was doing well. She is smart, compassionate and truly cares about all animals big and small. . . and she is really good with people. 15 years ago Doc Baker saved my beloved Apollo from parvo. It was a beautiful day, this month we had the heart breaking task of putting my beloved Apollo down. He was 15 1/2 years old. Doc Baker has been the most compassionate and caring vet I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. If you are looking for a genuine, loving and compassionate vet I would highly recommend Doctor Shelby Baker. Oh and for the record, her staff is awesome as well!! Read Less

I've been taking my cat here since I got him after my parents had such good experiences with Dr. Baker at her previous practice.  They've always done a great job and while my cat hasn't any reason for visits other than normal checkups, I'm confident they will take good care of him if he does get sick.The real reason I feel they deserve 5 stars is for the fantastic job they did caring for my parents' cat.  He had a tumor and was starting to get sick and their previous vet did a really poor job with him.  Since they had worked with Dr. Baker in the past and had good experiences as well, they brought him here.  She and her staff did a fantastic job helping them come to the tough decision to have him put to sleep, and I feel really helped make the process easier both on them, and on their cat.To top it all off, Dr. Baker wrote them a really sweet condolences card, which was really an amazing gesture.I can't imagine taking my cat anywhere else. I took my cat here about a year ago for an emergency.  He had been running around the house slipped on the counter (think cartoon cat), and couldn't walk anymore. We called all the different vets within 10 miles of our house, and this place was the only one that could take him right away.  When we got there, we had to wait in the lobby for over 10 minutes even though we called ahead and said this was an emergency, I mean he couldn't walk and was wailing.  When they did take him back, they didn't let us in the room, we had to stay in the lobby.  When the Dr. did decide to finally comes and talk to us, she assumed that we were beating the cat because both of his kneecaps were dislocated.  I told her that he had rotating knee caps and that normally he popped them in himself, but when both of them pop out there is nothing he can do.  She was condescending and rude and honestly I was expecting the animal shelter to show up and take him away.  And of course, this conversation was taking place in the lobby in front of all the other pet owners.  She eventually gave him back to me, charged us about $400 to pop his knees back in and take an x-ray.  I took him to Galena Vet afterwards, and he's never had a problem since. Dr. Baker has been my pet's veterinarian for 7 years now. She is attentive, responsive, and has a huge passion for pets. She spends ample time with me and my fur kids in the exam room, out in the waiting room, or even over the phone. She answers all my questions throughly. In all the times my fur kids got sick or needed routine exams, Dr. Baker has been great. Each time my pet has gotten better, which in-turn, made me feel better. Once I was out of the country scuba diving and my mom had to bring my dog by for an injury. Dr. Baker and her staff treated my dog and more importantly, my mother very well and with compassion. As it turns out, my dog had Cushings disease.  He's been gone for a few months as a result of cancer, but I felt I should write this review as I use a different vet for my new dog. Dr. Baker treated my dog for repeated UTIs and what she misdiagnosed as a fungal skin infection for months.  We took our dog to the vet in Bishop last winter for an x ray.  When we told him about the unrelated issues our boy was having, he immediately recommended a test for Cushings disease, which came up positive.  We battled skin infections and peeing constantly for months and all it took was the right diagnosis and dosage of meds to get the Cushings under control.  When I read about it on the internet, I discovered it is fairly common and also has some obvious symptoms. How Dr Baker missed this I do not know. The other comment I must make is that she will recommend the shotgun approach to lab work without zeroing in to minimize cost.....We had two older dogs on multiple meds for arthritis and Cushings. Our new vet would price match with the best prices for meds online. Dr Baker would not.  Her office was convenient to our old neighborhood but we elected to go elsewhere. Read Less

In being new to the Reno area I was concerned about finding a vet. This vet was closest to home and I gave it a try. The staff were all very welcoming. I came in on a day that was very busy for Dr. Baker but my cat was sick and I had to get her in. The staff did just that. They scheduled me to drop off my cat and the Dr. would get to her in-between surgeries. Although my cat was there for a while I was comforted. When I left the vet-tech had given me a run down about what usually happens and what Dr. Baker likes to do when they see cases like mine and gave me a possible quote if the Doctor felt like going that rout. Shortly after leaving the tech called me and said she had checked with Dr. Baker and said that she had given me the wrong information and that I wouldn't need to worry about the x-rays like she thought I had originally needed. That made me feel much better knowing that the tech checked in with Dr. Baker and further proceeded to inform me so that I wouldn't have to worry about x-rays that weren't needed because my cat wasn't terribly sick. I called later on in the afternoon to check on my cat and the tech who answered gave me a status update which made me feel well. Once I was able to come in and pick up my cat the staff was great. They were very busy with other 'parents' when I came in but they got to me in a timely manner and made sure that Dr. Baker knew I was there right away and proceeded to bring my cat out and give me an update. When talking to Dr. Baker she was friendly and very informant and gave me a run down of what she wanted to do as far as medicine went and some other tests that would be good for my cat since I had just adopted her from the shelter and she is old. I could tell she cared about her patients and she did inquire as to why I hadn't taken her to the vet before but when I told her I had just adopted her she was fully understanding and felt better about understanding why my cat had gotten sick. I believe I met all of the staff that day that I was in and all were really friendly. Even the other patients parents who where there were friendly. Although I have only been there once I will change my review if things do change but I will use Dr. Baker unless things change. The only thing that worries me for the future is the prices however they didn't go much over what I thought it was going to be. But no vet bill is ever inexpensive it seems like. Read Less

1.  Don't call the vet if you're not a trained vet, vet tech.  Apparently even though her number is listed on the website it is an inconvenience for potential, and now former customers to call about what is and emergency to you (the paying customer).  If its and issue for the paying customer to call you about a perceived emergency then A) don't list your number on the website B) don't throw it back in our face when a service we are will and wanting to pay for isn't being done.2.  Don't expect your pet to be seen in a timely manner even if you where the very first customer to show up that day.  I understand there are different circumstances that we the customer, and you the supplier can't manipulate but customer service in a timely matter would benefit any business in either retaining customers, or getting new ones. 3.  Communication is key.  Don't tell me NOT to feed my dog because the perceived procedure he will be having will be the day I brought him in. 18+ hours after his last feeding is he going to die? Probably not. Would he be strong enough to come out of the surgery? Maybe.  If he would have been okay then why do we sign a waiver omitting you of any liability that may occur? 4.  You are providing a service.  When I am coming to you with a problem that I am willing to pay hundreds, possibly thousands if other issues arise I expect to get my monies worth, not just "I'll get to it when I get to it" attitude.5.  I am not an inconvenience.  You may provide a specialized service, but its definitely not so specialized that I can't find 20 other vets in town, and some that have been around for 20 years.  The only reason that had originally brought me to your place of business WAS convenience to where I live.  With your services no longer needed I will make the drive 15 minutes away to Klaich to use their services.  6.  DO take your animals to a different establishment.  I would HIGHLY recommend Klaichs Animal Hospital, or Pyramid Animal Hospital.  They both have or had treated me great in the past.  Money is not a deterrent when it comes to my kids/dogs. They treat my dog with care and love .And  that is very important to me.Also if I have an issue with my dog, I call her on her cell, and she always returns my call. To answer any issue I may have. Not to many vets do that.The staff there is great, I will keep this place as my vet, because they care. Read Less

I did bring my Dog in for a check up last years. Services were A+ but I would give an F on the price I paid - $160! ($45 mandatory for office visit plus some medicine for a condition my dog had which it did not help) Don't get me wrong, I love my dog, so do many of you. But there is something seriously wrong that I paid more for my dog than my kids for a doc visit! Shop around guys Read Less

Had to take our kitty here for an abscess on his chin from a spider(?) bite. all the staff was extremely friendly and seemed concerned for our cat. Dr. Baker was good about explaining everything that was going on and listened to all of my concerns regarding the procedure and aftercare. She called every day for the ext few days after we took our cat home to check on how he was doing. We will definitiely be making this place our new vet of choice. Read Less

My 3 year old lab Daisy, got ill and was looking dehydrated after having a very upset stomach. I called Damonte Ranch Hospital and they told me to bring her right in. It took me a little longer than I thought to get there and they had gone. Here is the surprise though. I called the office and Dr. Baker's personal cell was given on the answering machine. I called it and she and 2 other staff members came down to help us. This was 40 minutes past closing time and they were so kind and compassionate. The office, examining rooms, and kennel area were immaculate. Dr. Baker went over the x rays with me and was very thorough. She told me I could call or text at anytime to update her on my Dog's condition. The other staff members were very caring and you can see that they genuinely Love animals. I am super impressed and so very , very grateful to them. This is where my animals will be cared for when needed from now on. You cannot go wrong in trusting your animals to Dr.Baker and the staff at Damonte Ranch Animal Hospital. Read Less

I have been in to see Dr. Baker about 4 times. Before I even brought in any of my cats, I took the time to interview her to get a feeling of what I could expect. She was extremely willing to listen to my questions and answer them as thoroughly as possible. She also stated plainly that she will admit she doesn't know everything and will call other vets for opinions and diagnosis on things that she doesn't know. How many people are this honest about their job? I loved that about her. I finally took my cat in to her and she was great with him and took wonderful care in solving the problem. I was a previous client of the FMC on Caughlin and believe Dr. Baker is a much better experience for me and my animals. Read Less

I wish I could have something better to report, but would caution owners about this place. I took my puppy here for an issue and was told that she needed surgery and the price tag was staggering. I'm a hard working person ordinary joe with a modest income so I began to research this further. I discovered that the symptoms are common in the breed and there are other, much more cost effective treatments available and surgery is typically only the last resort. I went to another vet and they confirmed this.None of this was mentioned to me by Dr Baker and only the very expensive surgery. I question the motivations here, seemingly without regard for what is best for my puppy and what is best for the financials of the practice. Btw - after going on a $20 pill regimin, the issue is totally resolved.  I will not be back to this place! Read Less
