The DOSES have worn out a few generations of our dogs and cats in the 30 years we have been seeing them! You will get no nonsense reasonably priced vet care of the highest quality here! And yes just like the soup Nazi on Seinfeld it is completely on Sharon's and Tom's terms! If you are a whining liberal snowflake transplant from Brownsville there could be problems! Toms back is not what it use to be so no big dogs,just cats and small dogs besides the usual bunch of small critters.    If you are bringing a pet in for the first time, bring the records! We are new to the area and our 13-year-old FIV cat needed an appointment. The doctor herself answered my call. She said that there was no way that they could see him for a couple of days "no matter WHAT" and that, "We will need all of his previous medical records if we are going to take on the care of a 13-year-old." I stated that I didn't currently have his records because we just moved here from California. Then she said, "That tells me everything I need to know."I'm not sure what in the hell that means but obviously this veterinarian is not interested in taking money from Californians. Fine by me! I called another vet and got an appointment for the next morning. My cat (Knotnow) has been seeing both Dr Dose n Mrs Dr Dose since we first got her over 9 yrs ago..We love the fact that they take the time and really care about animals . My cat loves them n even gives them kisses after she see them . If you have a small pet and want vets that have your animals best interest at heart, And let you know they care this is a great place to take them.The best part is they been around for awhile and 9 times out 10 if I happen to mention them some ones taken there pet there or heard of them an even better I've yet to hear a bad thing about there business! My experience was back in September, but I needed awhile before I could write my experience with Dose's vet.My dog had been seeing both Dose's throughout the years.  They offered good care, once my dog started having seizures they prescribed medication to help lessen the amount seizures.  They have no front the desk...which some seem to like since there's no middle man but it makes contacting them difficult.  It also means that they'll answer calls during your appointment sometimes...I'll get back to this.It had come to the point where we had to put our dog to sleep. We made an appointment for the end of their work day.  Without going into too much detail our experience with Sharon Dose was traumatic and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone for end of life pet care.  She seemed to want to go for the cheaper route with an injection. She tried and failed multiple times while my dog was clearly in pain.  She finally opted for the gas mask after I told her this was not working.  It would have been beneficial to have a vet tech to assist..or for her to call her husband in because an extra set of hands was needed.  The second it was finished she said "that will be $45".  Maybe try collecting copays at the start of appointments like this?  On top of all this she answered the phone 2 times during the procedure.  I understand cutting corners to reduce cost but when providing such a poor treatment and customer service, I think it's time to step back and reevaluate your clinic.  This was completely unacceptable and I highly recommend going somewhere else. Finally found a vet that is compassionate and cares about your pets well being. We took our 8 year old rescued dachshund to get teeth extractions and a cleaning and it didn't cost us an arm and a leg! Reasonable pricing but most importantly amazing vets. I cannot be happier that I found these vets or be more satisfied with their service. I recently adopted an older dog who had truly HORRIBLE teeth. After bringing him into Drs. Dose, I found out that many were rotten and infected. Their condition was so bad that the doctors weren't able to even fully examine his mouth due to the extreme discomfort the slightest touch would cause. They scheduled my pup for his tooth-extraction surgery the NEXT DAY, which was a SUNDAY. Both Tom and Sharon were unbelievably kind and thorough, calling me multiple times during the day with updates and spending ample time with me after the procedure. I could also tell by my dog's responses when I came to pick him up that he felt very comfortable and safe with them. I was also blown away by how reasonable their prices were. As other reviews have stated, Drs. Dose do not have any other staff, so they keep their overhead very low and ensure that only vets are handling your pets. My dog ended up having seven teeth extracted, as well as two growths on his eyelids. Even after they factored in the teeth cleaning, the anesthesia, the blood tests, and post-op meds, the bill was only a few hundred dollars instead of the $2000+ that I was expecting. I would give them 100 stars if I could.During a routine checkup with my, at the time, 3 year old kitty Penny, a previous vet found a very bad heart murmur. On a scale of 1-6 (6 the worst), Penny was at a 5 1/2 and the vet told me there was nothing we could do, and that Penny would not live long. I refused to accept this as I love her very much, and found Dr. Dose, who my family used to take pets to when I was a child, for a second opinion.Tom kept Penny for an entire day, doing x-rays, blood work, and a full check up to see her complete condition (this was very affordable, I must say only a couple hundred dollars even though she was there from 7 am- 5pm). When we met, Dr. Dose very thoroughly explained to me the murmur, showing me all the work they had done and where the backflow was, and what this meant for Penny. Her heart was deformed, and her little kitty heart was racing at an average resting rate of about 240 BMP (a healthy rate is 120-180ish). Dr. Dose said that we could give her a common beta blocker and monitor her heart rate, and after only about a month of me administering the medication and checking her heart rate at home, her rate had dropped to a steady 120-140. It has been five years, and Penny's murmur is completely gone, her heart has regrown, and Penny is a heart healthy kitty.Penny has had other issues -- she has bad skin allergies that caused her horrible constipation and vomiting that Tom was able to diagnose when I casually mentioned how much she loves to be brushed, which alerted him to the fact that she's itchy, and it caused her colon (which is made of -- tada! skin!) to swell and make her constipated. She occasionally gets medicine for allergies if she has a break out. Nice, easy fix.They are serious. They love animals--both Tom and Sharon. They know what they are doing and they truly want to take care of little fur babies AND their patients. I regularly get light headed and dizzy when talking about medical stuff and Dr. Dose knows the signs when I'm about to faint and takes me on walks outside and makes me laugh to get my heart rate back up. I don't know what I'd do without Dr. Dose to look after Penny and our other cats and be there any time I have a question, they are just a phone call away and always so glad to help me. They are straightforward and honest and people may see that as rude but they are truly wonderful vets! I would not recommend ANYONE else. Read Less

They made me feel less like a patient and more like family.  My experiences with them range from normal check-ups and vaccinations to serious illnesses and surgeries. I have been taking my dogs to the Doses for years.  They have expertly taken care of all their needs.  Sharon speaks her mind, so if you have a fat dog and think it is a good thing she is not the vet for you.  Tom is very laid back but will also let you know if you are not doing right by your pet.  So if you want unbiased pet vets who are totally committed to the care of small animals Dose's Pet Vets is a great place for you. I was referred to the Dr.'s Dose by a close friend 6 years ago when I moved to Reno.  They are the most amazing vet's ever.  First, the care my dog has received has been fantastic.  My dog had a huge facial abscess removed under general anesthesia with surgical drains.  I just knew it was going to be thousands of dollars.  When I got the bill it was under $300.  They are the most intelligent, amazing vets and I wouldn't take Stanley anywhere else.  For the two recent bad reviews that I see here, they are both from young ladies that probably aren't used to adult tell it like it is communication.  I'll take Sharon or Tom any day over run of the mill vets with high dollar costs associated with them.  This you can depend on:  outstanding vet care at the most unbelievable prices around.  If you want "kiss your ass" care at high dollar cost, look somewhere else.  Makes more time available for those of us who appreciate coming here. My pets have gone to the Dose's since I was a child. I estimate we've gone there about 30 years. They're fantastic, they truly love animals, they understand they're a part of your family and always have given great advice in a real and compassionate way. The fact that they're affordable and very fair is a bonus. They don't have staff, but once you know you need to call in the morning for an appointment, it won't affect anything. I recommend anyone looking for VA vet consider them. As a side note, they only do smaller animals. Read Less

I've been taking my dog to Dose's Pet Vets ever since I bought her as a puppy, approximately 7 months.  In that time, I have had her vaccinated, assessed, and spayed by Dr. Sharon Dose.  I believe that she is skilled in veterinary medicine, but I have never met someone so rude and condescending to customers in my entire life.  After it was revealed that I was an RN, every time I went in for services for my dog, she was extremely rude to me.  In fact, she made it a point to negate any information or questions that I might have, be condescending in her tone and words, and contradictory/confrontational in all of her associations with me.  After 3-4 appointments and phone calls having to deal with this TOTALLY unprofessional behavior coming from a veterinarian, I am done.  Today I finally called her on her lack of basic courtesy and civility towards me.  I don't know about her husband since I was not given a chance to see him, but I would definitely not recommend taking your pets to this woman based on her lack of human decency. Our two little Chihuahuas are our world.  After moving here three years ago I was very unimpressed with the vets here.  Vets that are not open on the weekend? Not acceptable.  Dr. Dose and Dr. Dose are a great husband/wife team.  Sharon is direct, but she cares as deeply about your pet as you do.  She is definitely a pet advocate more over than being soft and fuzzy with the owner!  Tom is mid-west and a warm caring person.  They are both knowledgeable and caring. I've never dealt with him but she's absolutely terrible. No people skills in the least and told me to find a new vet when I cancelled, the morning of, my cat's spay due to me having pneumonia and being in the hospital. I was planning to fire them after her spay anyway but ended up getting it done cheaper at the humane society and now we are at Baring and I'm completely happy with them. Read Less

Their prices for dental were very reasonable and they were very friendly and thorough with the whole process.  You can tell they really care about the animals and love what they do. This was my first time taking my cat to the vet. I found this vet office by searching on Google and read that their prices are reasonable. At the time my cat had a rash on her nose and I was really worried I would have to shell out $$$ for her care. As a college student, I couldn't be more grateful for the prices and the level of care. Mrs Dr Dose is always a pleasure! She always gives a thorough explanation of what she is doing and seems to have a great touch. I know I can trust my furbaby's health when I visit her (I have yet to visit when Mr Dr Dose is working) One last thing that I love about this office is their hours. Since they open at 7am on some weekdays, I can bring my kitty in before I have classes. Scheduling with them is smooth and convenient. Drs. Tom and Sharon Dose are fantastic.  When I moved to Reno in July, a colleague recommended them to me.  I have two cats, one of which regularly needs a corticosteroid injection to keep at bay her chronic skin condition.  The first visit fee to get one's pet in the system is $25, plus the $25 regular office visit fee.  The injection that my cat receives every 6-7 weeks is $20.  Such reasonable prices!  Before I moved to Reno, I lived in Atlanta and paid a $50 office fee and $40 for the shot each visit.  Drs. Tom and Sharon run the show all on their own, and as much as I understand and appreciate the roles of vet techs at larger practices, I am glad that they do everything relating to my pet rather than have the vet tech do the intake. The initial visits for each of my two cats was thorough.  I learned that one of my cats had a pet recovery service microchip implanted in her because Dr. Dose scans the pets.  I'm the second owner of my cats.  Why didn't my vet in Atlanta scan the cats so that I would have this information?!  I appreciate that Dr. Dose did!Dose's Pet Vets has great hours: they open at 7 am on weekdays and weekends.  And whenever I have called to schedule a shot, I have been able to get the cat in on the same day.  I appreciate how prompt but thorough Dr. Dose (I usually see Dr. Tom) is with my cat.  He's also really funny, and it is clear that he loves animals.  He grew up in Iowa and had his first practice there, and I love his laidback Midwest attitude.  In short: I highly recommend them! This clinic is owned by a couple, and both are vets. I was referred to them and warned at the same time that they are rude. I ignored the warning and went anyway. These two vets are very abrupt, brash and rude far too often. The rudeness comes out of nowhere, and I've experienced it from BOTH, Dr Tom Dose and Dr Sharon Dose. One two occasions I asked why they were behaving this way to me for no reason, but they are quite oblivious to how they behave. I think they must communicate this way so much that it's normal to them. For questioning them and standing up for myself, they "punished" me by removing me as a client. As a previous business owner, I can say that they would not be employed very long anywhere, because they do not show professional courtesy to their "people" clients who PAY the bills! It's a good thing they have their own business and can run it the way they want. I think I'll return to my original vet who is further way from me because they know how to treat their customers. Excellent , Caring Veterinarians , but only for small pets. They don't see larger dogs , but this has nothing to do with their caring or ability. It is for personal reasons. The care of the smaller animals ( probably those less than 30 lbs.) is absolutely the best and as caring for the animal as if it were their own. I highly recommend this Veterinarian couple . I have owned the Heinz 57 variety dogs for some 70 years. This couple take care of the Heinz 57 type animal as if it were a purebred Animal Show winner with an owner from the Hollywood elite at a fee for the average blue collar wage earner.. Read Less

This review is about a touching experience I had at Dose Pet Vets. I went in there to get replacement thyroid medicine, because my Mother lost her cats thyroid medicine. My mother is on a fixed income, and really couldnt afford replacement pills. A patient of Dose's passed away recently, and the pet owner kindly donated 100 of her pets unused thyroid pills to the Doses. Dr. Tom Dose was nice enough to give them to us, because he knew of my elderly mothers tight financial situation. It was just so generous of the woman to do something positive in a situation as depressing as the passing of a pet. That woman is definitely a kind soul. It was also very nice of the Doses to give those pills to us. It was a very sweet experience that I will not soon forget! Overall, the Doses are definitely the BEST veterinarians that you will find! They are the ONLY veterinarians that we trust our pets lives with! Not only are they very competent, smart individuals, but they are reasonably priced, as well. They are honest and always know the solution to our pets problems. I recommend them to anyone who wants incredibly capable veterinarians, who are also sensibly priced. Read Less
