We spent 5.5 hrs without seeing a dr. We did not know what was wrong with our puppy. After sitting in emergency care for all that time - reading everything on my phone I could. I deduced they he may have ingested something toxic. My husband couldn't even be with me, because they wouldn't allow more than one person in their lobby. He had to sit in the car and keep calling me for updates. Several articles I read, said if after 6 hrs my dog was still alive, it would probably pass on its own. We went home with no help whatsoever from these folks. I get that it's challenging and they were busy, but we were beside ourselves and we knew that every hour counted whether our little guy would live or die. We asked if we could just talk to a vet for 5 minutes and they said "no". We were told several times we were 2nd in line, but then got bumped back. It was excruciating torture to watch your animal suffer without any help. Sorry Sierra Vet Hospital. You guys need better communication, better a process for patients, and staff to support the situation :( Read Less

This place is a joke. I went on Wednesday afternoon because my vet was about to close and they recommended me going here. My dog was in excruciating pain, and crying anytime you got near him. Upon arrival I must say vet tech and receptionist were friendly, caring, and got me quickly. Once in there the vet came and did an evaluation and was told my dog had a neck strain. That my dog needed complete bed rest for 4-6 wks. If that didn’t help then he would need surgery. I was quoted $300-$1100 for treatment and $4000-6000 for surgery. I went with the conservative treatment and paid $460 for blood work, medicine, and office visit. Vet also did 2 shots. One was an anti inflammatory and the other was a pain killer. I was sent home. My dog hated the medicine and was unable to get him to take it, so the next day I made an app with his regular veterinarian. Regular vet did a complete exam and determined it was splinters. My dog have multiple splinters hidden underneath his fur layer. He ordered my dog to have his hair shaved and sure enough it was splinters that were stuck on his inner layer of fur coat. Once fur was gone my dog turned into his normal self immediately. He was happy and wagging his tail. My dog looks like a little rat but hey he is nice and healthy again. I am upset at the fact that I got a complete misdiagnoses. My dogs neck is perfectly fine. I wasted 460 on nothing. Not even the medicine because he doesn’t need it. All day today he has been playing ,running, jumping pain free. If an employee actually reads this please I beg u re train your Vets. This type of scare is not cool. Read Less

I'm so happy that I chose Sierra Veterinary Specialists when my cat had a ruptured abscess after my Vet's normal hours. They provide emergency services so I wasn't expecting to be in and out quickly; the wait was reasonable and comfortable. Dr. Miller and the staff were exceptional. They even gave me a follow up call to see how my cat was doing and he healed so quickly. I compared charges with other after hours emergency vet services and am confident that they are the most reasonably priced in the Reno area. I don't normally leave reviews but this facility deserves it. I had to bring my dog in at 4am with a diagnosis of aspiration pneumonia and she needed to be hospitalized. If anyone has ever been in this position with their pet, you know how terrifying it is. For me, this was the first time. But these vets and their team explained things and took the time, answered any and all of my questions enthusiastically, and worked through what was absolutely necessary on the bill since I don't have much money. The building is huge and new. It houses top of the line equipment and is laid out in a practical, yet comfortable way for the people and the animals(even when they have to stay overnight). Anyway, this vet is amazing. Freda is home, a few days into her antibiotics, and is almost completely back to herself. Thanks Dr. Hayes and everyone who helped. Thanks for saving my girl. Read Less

Our precious fur-babie (13) passed away while traveling. We were 2,000 miles from home and absolutely heartbroken. It was in the middle of the night, I called in and told them the situation and that we'd be arriving in about 6 hours. They were waiting and took great care of us. I believe Shannon helped us upon arrival and was absolutely amazing. So sympathetic and patient as I had a hard time controlling my emotions along with having no sleep. Our Lulu was our child. We have two Boston Terriers the same age and part of our family for 13 years. We had our baby cremated and they shipped her home for us. They even put her paw print and place her in a man-made wooden box. These folks are wonderful! I'm so grateful to them. I recommend them 100% Prices were on average 150$ less then others in the area. I went there with my super sick kitten who needed treatment. They took her in the back and I waited, the doctor didn't talk with me about anything, other than taking notes on what happened and then I never saw the vet again. The nurse came in with a treatment plan which was insanely expensive, were talking more than a grand. They wanted $800 to even start treatment, which I didn't have. I told them they can have my card and put it in the system and charge it on payday, but they wouldn't do that. Instead they gave me back my dying cat still charged me 200$ for pretty much nothing. I have a lot of reviews to catch up on...but I have to push this one to the front, in case there is someone out there, like myself, who finds themself in the horrible position of searching for an ER vet in the middle of the night...Not knowing anyone out here, I turned to Yelp and tried to sort through the reviews of clinics that were open in a 100 mile radius...and hoping I made the best choice. As with everything on here, one has to weigh the negative reviews against the positive, and try to pick the place to go. Well, I ended up going with Sierra Veterinary. All I can say is that if I could give them more than 5 stars, I would. From the moment we walked through the doors, we were greeted with compassion. Every step of the way was explained. They listened to my concerns and addressed all my questions. At no time, did I feel that I was being pressured into any unnecessary tests. In fact, each option was laid out for me and all charges were explained prior to any procedure.Considering I was there under emergency situation, the entire visit and tests were much lower than expected. I have had higher non-emergency visit vet bills before. Not to mention the fact that each member, from the reception desk to the vet, were so kind and supportive. We even received a courtesy call to check on my girl the next day.I highly recommend this place. I can't say enough about them. It's a relief to know that if there is a place I can take my best friend should she fall ill after hours and know she will get the care she needs. Read Less

Dr. McClellan is AWESOME!!!! I took my dog to see Dr. McClellan for a torn ACL. I had already gotten the bad and EXPENSIVE news from our vet, but wanted a second opinion. The parking lot is small and busy but all that business is a good sign right? The facility is very clean and welcoming. The girls at the front desk are very friendly and helpful. I probably could have done without the "nurse" who took us to the back, she didn't seem like she liked animals. But maybe she was having a bad day. Then in comes the Dr. (I chose this place for a second opinion after a family friend referred it. And I liked that I'd be talking to an actual surgeon!) the Dr has tattoos, gauges in his ears, and a sweet hipster mustache! Not what you expect to come walking in! He gets to know our dog, asks questions and then he explains exactly what's going on inside our dog and even drew it out on the white board so we can visually see! He was very thorough and detailed. He told us every aspect. We asked about things others had said and he gave us his side. I was not disappointed! He's very knowledgeable and can explain it so the common man understands perfectly. He's honest and energetic. Just what I need in a Dr! We don't need surgery as of right now but due to our dog's genetics and active lifestyle, we know it's inevitable. I know we will choose Dr. McClellan when the time comes. You will not be disappointed when you see him!! Read Less

We took our 13 year old cat in as recommended by our vet. She was making a strange noise when she swallowed. It was not hindering her eating or drinking. Our vet thought she might be a good candidate for an endoscopy. When we were taken into the exam room, the assistant did not ask about or take her out of her carrier. She just stepped out of the way. Shouldn't this be a liability concern? My daughter took her out and placed her on the scale on the counter. She asked a few questions, said the doc would be in soon, and left. We spent 45 minutes in a small, very warm exam room and finally the doc came in, didn't apologize or introduce herself plus no name tag. She examined our cat, asked a few questions and decided to do another X-ray even though she'd had one 2 weeks before. When she came back in she told us she could do the endoscopy the next day, with a surgeon present but only after she'd stayed the night with 12 hours of fluids for her "small, old cat kidneys" which our "cat only"  vet says are perfectly fine and that's not necessary. She insisted that the only way she would do the procedure was with her spending the night. She didn't explain the x-ray and so we opted not to leave her. It was an unpleasant experience, she's still traumatized and one we won't do again. The total price for this visit was $350 but the procedure could cost as much as $5000. They would not process my CareCredit card because it only had my husband's name on it and I have used it dozens of times at other places before. We will not return here or recommend this to others. It was a terrible experience. Read Less

Took my dog in because she appeared to have something stuck in her nose. She couldn't stop sneezing and had discharge coming from her nose. The only reason I went here was because it was the only one open on a Sunday. We waited while 2 others were in front of us, understandable. But we sat in a room for over 2 hours with no one coming in to check on us! I understand the vet is in surgery, but when you give a wait time of 45 minutes, I do not expect to wait over 2 hours. I had to ask the front desk how much longer we had to wait and she didn't even realize we were still in the room and had not been seen! Yes yes yes! This IS the place to take your pet in the case of an emergency. The facility is very clean and welcoming, and the staff are very friendly. After bringing my puppy in from a different hospital across town, the staff here immediately gave us a private room with a comfy bed for her to lay on. We had to take her here for surgery on her hind leg after being hit by a car. There are multiple options for surgery when a dog's femur is broken, and the orthopedic doctor explained each option to us in layman's terms with as much description as possible. We really felt like we had a deeper knowledge of what was going to happen to my baby. We ended up choosing FHO, or femoral head ostectomy. This was explained to be the least costly surgery with the highest success rate and the best outcomes in the long run. When it came to admitting my dog for the surgery, the front desk staff brought in the quote. $3,300. Ouch! The policy here is to have 50% of the quote paid at time of admission, but there was no way we could come up with it. After many phone calls and a solid $1,000 for the deposit, we spoke with Jean the finance manager and she worked with us amazingly, agreeing with the deposit and monthly payments for the remaining balance. The staff member who helped us get my dog admitted was amazing as well. She was very helpful and made sure my dog was the first priority. After we left the hospital, the surgeon (Dr. McClellan) called 10 minutes before the surgery as well as immediately after with updates. I also received multiple calls throughout the night with updates on her status. Once I went to pick her up the next day, the surgeon came into the room and spoke with me for a bit, showing me the X-rays and explaining everything to me. He helped me get my dog out into my car. They also included a follow up appointment with the surgeon and the rehabilitation department in the costs, which was incredibly helpful. The rehab doctor was awesome. She showed us all the exercises to do at home, and gave me all sorts of pointers. They also included an optional underwater treadmill appointment! The people here are awesome. They know my dog when we come in, and she loves going here! The waiting room has a coffee area and bathroom. There are beautiful pictures hung throughout the hospital. I highly highly recommend this place if you need to take your furry friend anywhere for an emergency! Read Less

Knowing that I just needed to prevent a burst bladder and death, until I could see my regular vet, the Sunday Vet (I can't remember his name but I know he's part owner) agreed to drain my cat in an unorthodox way to save me money. Hand downs worst experience at a veterinarian office, I have ever dealt with. This was an awful experience for myself. I took a puppy to get checked out because his temp was lowering, and had being trying to puke with no success. When I put my finger in his mouth to see if anything was stuck I found nothing, besides the fact my finger was now covered in blood. He was having trouble breathing as well, and at the arrivel to SVS he was taken shortly after he was taken it became ever so that apparent they were hounding me for a decision. Not to mention it was 2 in the morning, and this was a lot to take in. I was given 4 options take him home to die, pay a 900 deposit, euthanize him, or surrender him. I was very hard pressed to surrender him by all in the hospital. He was a very young pup about 4 months old, a very good looking dog. I felt pressured by staff As if one of the had found an interest in him, and wanted me to surrender rights beings a SVS employees have first choice to adopt the puppy. Now trying to contact the hospital to ask if he made it through the night and they refuse to tell me anything about him at all. I researched the legal aspect and read that they are allowed to give the information on his status, but refused it.Read Less

Dr. Pelsue and his staff were so kind and understanding. They treated my concerns for my puppy boy with respect and didn't make me feel pressured to make any choices. They start small to diagnose and treat and give you the choice to go more aggressively. Dr. Pelsue even called later that night to check on my dog and give further advice. It was rather costly, but reasonable-ish for emergency care. Will be calling today because I was double charged for something, but overall, a great experience. It's been a few years since I had to take any of my dogs to Sierra Vet Specialists. When my previous vet coldly stated my dog must have cancer and we should just chop her leg off - I wasn't convinced and decided I needed a surgical biopsy of the lump on her leg. My vet had no desire to do so. I called Sierra Vet Specialists because they'd previously helped with another dog of mine. Not only were they completely up front and honest- but sincere and compassionate, too. My dog had a fatty tumor and did not need amputation at all. Anytime I've needed to use them- even if the results weren't happy ones- I've been satisfied with the compassion and expertise. Would highly recommend. Read Less

Over priced wayyyyy over priced you wait and wait and wait the vet barely makes an appearance took my cat in they brought me my bill which was $800 and after reviewing the bill and seeing that my cat was not in that much pain she was not that sick they lowered the bill to $300 they ballpark the highest amount that they can get and claim it's because their specialty veterinarians went back in to get the bandages redone and they offered to amputate her tail but then brought me a $1,600 bill when I told him I couldn't afford that much, the nighttime vet gave my girlfriend and I bunch of attitude wanting that bmw payment and walked out. All of the vet techs were very helpful, more than the veterinarian's themselves and there are more on an understanding level when it comes to financing and helping your pet. I would not suggest going to this veterinarian. And just because you put that word specialists in front of veterinarian does not mean you can charge more than an actual veterinarian people need to get your minds right Read Less

My veterinarian referred me to Sierra Veterinary Specialists because my puppy had a bump on his nose that continued to get bigger. They did not have all the capabilities at their facility and SVS has specialists who would be able to better assess the situation. Dr. Koehm and the staff were very welcoming and took to my dog, Leo, from the beginning. Leo needed to be sedated to have x-rays done.  I had concerns about him being put under anesthesia, but Dr. Koehm was informative, patient, and answered all of my questions. After they got the x-rays, he personally called to inform me of what they found (molar in the nasal cavity that created a cyst) and next steps, which included surgery. After the procedure, they called to let me know that everything was successful. They even invited me to come visit Leo when he woke up so I could spend some time with him because he needed overnight treatment. The staff provided my dog with the best care, kept me up to date with phone calls throughout the night, and gave great customer service. If you want the best for your pet, Sierra Veterinary Specialists is THE place.  Yes, it can be pricey, but I know my fur babies are worth it! Read Less

I was referred to Sierra Vet Specialists by my vet, because my cat needed a "specialist". We weren't sure what was wrong, coughing, breathing difficulty, he was 9 yrs old. What a mistake. The doctor I had is no longer there now, and it makes me wonder if she was fired or forced to leave because it happened suddenly and without notice. How she was considered a specialist is beyond me. I felt I learned more online then from her. The office is HIGHLY overpriced, but i couldn't shop around while my cat was in distress. I found out later that it is a standard procedure most vets can do and its around $200-300, they charged me $1200.(  Also the second time they charged me a completely different price for same procedure, no one could explain that. Discrepancy was never resolved. I know because my kitty had to have same procedure (chest tap) several more times over the next couple of months. Test after test, and thousands of dollars of debt, I went to another vet. Too late. I couldn't afford all new testing somewhere else, since I already gave all my money to SVS, so we made my baby boy as comfortable as could be, he lasted a couple more months after that and I had to put him to sleep. I still have no answers as to what killed him. Heart disease, cancer, who knows, SVS didn't and we tested for everything. They are too big for their own good, too many hands in the pot and not enough caring for the animal. why didn't any other doctors get involved, don't they talk to each other there? help each other out? learn? After all my problems I did receive a call from the office manager that he would provide a free autopsy to find possible cause. too little too late, and I would never take my baby back to them dead or alive. they don't get my trust. If your pet has some out of the ordinary problem, take the time and drive to sacramento and go to UC Davis, I sure wish I would have known about them sooner.  I'm not sure if that would have saved my kitty or not but somehow I don't think I would have felt as cheated. Read Less

Read Less

Dr. Koehm and his staff are beyond wonderful!! We were nervous about our dogs dental surgery but he made us feel at ease about the procedure. The staff was on it from beginning to end. They cut out unnecessary costs from the bill which was a pleasant surprise (not having to take new X-rays and using the ones from the vet saved money). They also customize the visits with a little welcome sign for the pet. They called to follow-up on our pet the day after our procedure which was also appreciated.

For a 24 hour emergency vet, they are NOT staffed to deal with anything. $95 for a 3 minute talk with the vet. Not at all helpful. Read Less

He of course explained the risk and suggested otherwise, but walked me through what I needed to know to get us through the night. He did this twice in a month's time.
