We adopted two new cats and one of them came down with a serious ear issue that needed attention immediately. I called our vet of some 15+ years and they would not squeeze us in, put us off for days, days our cat did not have. Dr. Schmitt's receptionist immediately recognized the urgency, told me she would ask the Dr. if she could double book him. She was very kind and professional, she told me we may have to wait, but they would get us in. Our cat needed a minor surgery, Dr. Schmitt did it that evening. Our cat is recovering very well. Everyone in the office was very kind, compassionate and truly interested in the well being of our cat. We have a new vet! ATTENTION: This veterinarian hospital is absolutely horrible. They had little to no care whatsoever for my dog. They charged us thousands of dollars for blood work which the doctor had absolutely no idea what the blood work was for and could not explain anything to us. My dog needed surgery and the staff and the doc refused to send over X-rays to the surgeon. They said " you didn't request them early enough" which we had requested them the day before we came to the surgeon. They neglected my animal and charged us thousands of dollars for the neglect. The worst vet hospital I have ever in my life experience. I beg you not to go to his horrible place. They will neglect or maybe even kill your animal. Please please don't go here. Read Less

I respect that vets have a lot of schooling and training but I've owned small animals and livestock for over 30 years and I've never had a vet that charges this much!  My livestock vets don't charge me this much. We are very happy with South Reno Vet. The important part of the aforementioned "We" , of course, our dogs Sam and Albert. Unfortunately we lost our 12 year old Lab , Ben, to cancer two weeks ago. Dr Schmidt and staff provided excellent care during  his final months. We chose  to have him put to sleep at home and Dr Schmidt made that possible. The office provides a full range of services, including emergency care. We moved our dogs to South Reno Vet because our last vet office had become a bit impersonal with an ever rotating cast of doctors. Not a problem here. Recommend highly. As far as costs they are perfectly inline with all other providers. Read Less

Dr. Schmidt is the best, and we have been clients for fifteen years through five rescue dogs. Perhaps most important to us is that he actually listens to our concerns and doesn't just follow a pre-determined formula. He and his well-trained staff are thoughtful and caring and make sure we know what is happening. They follow up after procedures to make sure things are proceeding as anticipated. Our experience matches the other positive reviewers' comments. Yes, emergency care for injured pets can be expensive, but x-rays, drugs, and other procedures' costs are what they are regardless of which vet you use. We have found that Dr. Schmidt and his staff discuss all alternatives, especially if cost is an issue. Their pre-paid plans have worked out well for us. We have no hesitation recommending South Reno Veterinary Hospital if you care about your pets. Read Less

I've been taking my dogs to Dr. Schmitt for several years. No more. I took my 8 lb. dog in the other day, because he injured his leg and wasn't able to walk on it. I was told it would cost $500 for everything. Dr. required bloodwork prior to sedation (to determine if my 2 year old dog was healthy enough to be sedated), and sedation was required to take X-rays. Upon checkout, Dr. charged me $800, and when I questioned it, he said he had to take an extra X-ray, one of the healthy leg, for comparison. So I paid $800 to find out that my dog's leg wasn't broken, and get an anti-inflammatory med and pain killer. I am finding a new vet for my dogs. Read Less

This veterinarian office takes assistance from a nonprofit to help people who cannot afford the care for their animals . I was one of these people, I inherited a Rottweiler from my parents who passed and she is my complete world. She has a tumor that is infected unfortunately I cannot pay to have surgery on her and she is 15 years old. The doctor was very kind and I needed to get medication for her for an infection and I told him my aunt will give me $50 to help me with that. Dr. Schmidt is an awesome veterinarian.  Not only is he knowledgeable, he is extremely caring. He works around your schedule, he has always been available in minor emergencies, and the one time my dog's appointment had to be pushed back was when another dog had a serious emergency (which makes me know that if my dog ever had a serious emergency, I know she'll take priority). My dog has had several minor issues, and rather than just giving my dog drugs and sending us home, he talked to us about the options and listened when we made our decisions.  He has never discounted our concerns and he makes sure we know what his concerns are.If I could give him more stars, I would.  This is a veterinarian that my dog is happy and excited to see, and I feel confident with her in his care. We began using Dr. Schmidt's services when we moved to the south end of town in May of 2014. Our dog was a 19-year old mixed breed who only lived a few months after that. I was very pleased with Dr. Schmidt and his staff. His prices are a little higher than other places in town, but I feel we got a higher level of service here. That included things like being able to get in quickly, calls after hours from Dr. Schmidt to check on our dog when he was sick near the end of his life, and never being rushed in and out. I highly recommend the $99/year well pet service. You get MUCH more than you pay for. I can't recommend the South Reno Veterinary Hospital enough. Read Less

Dr Schmitt is excellent. He was recently closed and leaving the parking lot when he noticed a my friends car coming into the lot. He could have kept going home to his family and ignored it, but he turned around. The car had hit and badly injured a dog. He stayed for two hours (nine at night) until owners were located, comforted and given time to make a decision whereupon he waited patiently before they decided to have him put their pet to sleep. He is kindhearted, makes himself available at all hours for his patients even coming to the phone to talk to me himself several times rather than just having a secretary set an appointment or take a message. You might find a cheaper vet, but you will not find anyone who will love your pet like him. Also he takes numerous student interns from Galena High School every semester and gives those students unbelievable career experiences. Read Less

He said its more then $50 but he gave me her Meds at $50. I would recommend this vet he seems to have a deeper heart then deeper pockets .Read Less

Read Less

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!! I came in with my 3 lb puppy. I had to go into the cat side because the dog side was locked. I told the receptionist I was very allergic to cats so she gave me permission to go to the dog side. No one was in the waiting area but me. I started filling out my first time paperwork. All of the sudden a LARGE dog came from the exam room coming towards myself & puppy. The owner and the receptionist was trying to stop the Large dog but could not stop him. I yelled "GET YOUR DOG" I dropped the clip board & pen and grabbed my puppy. I put my leg up to protect my dog. Finally they got the dog. The receptionist told me to go inside a room. I told her I'm leaving. As I was gathering my things purse puppy Etc... The LARGE dog came at us again. I got up and went to the door to run out and the door was locked. I was locked in. I had to go to the cat side to go out. I feel all dogs should be on a leash for safety. You shouldn't have to go through what I went through. I was afraid for myself & my puppy. No wonder why no one was in there. Unprofessional. I went straight to: Mt Rose Animal Hospital. I was treated well and made an appointment for Friday. Two receptionist and people waiting. I felt very safe and I was Happy....so was my puppy. They never even called me to see if I wanted another appointment or to say they were sorry. STAY AWAY!!!!!! UNPROFESSIONAL!!!!!!Read Less

Read Less
