Dr. Hess is AMAZING! We recently started taking my dog Gunner to her for his allergy injections. I also had to take my older Cat in to her to be euthanized as well. She is very kind and thorough. I'm glad I didn't read the older reviews.  I called for an appointment, got the exact day and time I wanted.  We explained The Todd's symptoms and our concerns.  Todd was on the floor because it was cool and nice.  His Vet cuddled with him on the floor.  She discussed what she thought it could be, we decided on blood work.  We were given costs, high and low, in writing.  We made our choice and away we went.  Next morning we were called at 9 a.m. with a diagnosis and a plan.  Extremely pleased with everyone we have met and worked with. My wife and I came in with our dog having a reaction and the women at the desk asked what was wrong. My wife was a little frantic and said we needed to see a doctor. And the woman just stared at her asking questions with no urgency at all. My wife asked again if they're was someone to see our do, and the woman gave my wife a look. My wife asked why are you looking at me like I'm crazy, my dog needs to be seen. The woman took this as a personal attack and threw us out, saying this isn't how you treat people. New to the area and in search of a good vet for my 14 year old dog who was stressed from the move and was having issues and needed urgent care. I admit after researching I contacted a different vet first and did not get a response.  I decided to try Sage Vet and I am so happy I did.  This review is a bit overdue as we visited them over a month ago.  They were able to get us in within a day.  My dog has been relatively healthy so we have not had to go to the vet very often other than shots, but I love the way they sit on the floor with your pet and they were very attentive, thorough, caring and really explained everything. She needed a few tests, antibiotics and pain pills.  Her care was thoroughly explained and also what the follow up could possibly be.  I recieved a call as a follow up and her condition.  She is doing great after their care.  I love our old vet but I am so happy we found another great vet here in Sparks.  I did wait a bit, but like any medical place, there are emergencies and great care does take time.  I highly recommend them. I went to my original Vet afterwords because of how horrible I felt & just to get another opinion and see what was really going on & had a $1200 less estimate for my dogs teeth. I don't know if it was because it was a new Vet or not but it is ridiculous to make people pay for your overhead at your new facility. I will never go back to this establishment no matter how close it is to my house. This place is amazing! I had tried several times over months to get in touch with my current vet( Baring veterinary clinic) to get my dog in for updated shots and a check up. Not only did they ignore my emails and calls but the could not even find a record that my dog (a patient of theirs of 7 years) had ever been there. Finally fed up, I called Sage and they fit me in same day to get my dog the care he needed and deserved. Sage vet clinic is clean organized and friendly. The veterinarian sat on the floor with him to make him feel more comfortable. They were amazing. My dog has never liked the vet like he liked Sage. They are the best! This place started out great years ago. It's nothing but problems anymore.  The vets don't care about your time.  Suggestions of treatments are made with little to no indicative evidence that it's the right path.  They have poor bed side manner and treat the pet owners with a very poor attitude.  Would not recommend to my worst enemy. First I want to say my pet has never received veterinary services here, my review is solely on the condescending attitude when I walked into this office. I stopped by to ask if they would post a flier for my dog that was stolen. They agreed, but then started grilling me on why I had not gotten my dog microchipped and how it was irresponsible because now my kids (who were standing next to me in the lobby) would never see their puppy again. Then they recommend that I put my kids faces on the flier to gain sympathy.  I was totally appalled. Yes I felt bad for my kids, and yes I wished that my dog was microchipped, but I couldn't change that....and since my dog was stolen it wouldn't matter if there was a chip or not. Love this place. They treated our older dog with care and practicality as he was getting old so we could make his last months comfortable. Then we had an emergent situation with one of our guinea pigs and they let us come in and stayed late to ensure treatment. I don't know what we would have done otherwise as there aren't any other vets that treat small exotics that I know of. They do everything they can to make our pets comfortable. I recently moved to the Reno, Sparks area and was in need of a new Vet. I did my mini research on Yelp and made many phone calls to plenty of offices. What set Sage apart from everywhere else was the ease of actually emailing the office and getting a reply back within a timely manner (I guess I was lucky compared to other reviewers about this place). I originally called them with a refill/new prescription on my dog's meds, being the starving college student that I am, I of course was also trying to find the most reasonably priced place (she's on Apoquel; which is VERY hard to get, it's back ordered by the manufacture). Without getting into too much detail about how they worked their magic the medication that I needed (my original vet has been out for close to 3 months), I am very happy at the connivence of being able to get my prescriptions refilled online and being able to email them about scheduling appointments.Dr. Malinas and her staff were all very friendly, easy to talk to, and answered all of my 101 questions. They sat down on the floor with my child, talked sweet baby talk and showered her with super love and attention. Kind, caring and professional.  It is nice to have a multitude of Vets available for any concerns that arise. They are all very knowledgeable and helpful; especially in helping my family put one of our beloved dogs down.  Services are very competitive and faster than I have experienced in other location.I know dog owners can be a bit self absorbed and nit-picky (not to mention hyper-sensitive; see other reviews) but I have seen them handle the most panic stricken owner with care and compassion.  Great job, folks. This rating is not for Dr. Malinas--she was fantastic and spent more time explaining things to me than any vet I have ever been to.  The poor rating is for the business itself.  My dog tore his cruciate ligament and needed to be braced.  The long story is detailed below but in short, this clinic actually sat on a cast for my injured dog that needed to be sent out to a bracing company for TWO WEEKS because they used parts from another kit and hadn't received the replacement kit yet (the one I purchased).   I didn't know all of this, of course, until I called the bracing company only to find out that they hadn't received any cast two weeks after I spent $700 to buy it.  The sad part of this whole thing is I had spent a week crying, knowing that my dog would never fully recover, and then rejoiced hearing that there was an alternative to surgery.  I spoke with one of the employees on Sept. 18th and begged her to send the cast out as soon as possible because Dr. Malinas told me that the longer my dog goes without some kind of treatment, the faster arthritis will build up.  The employee told me that she would send the cast out as soon as she received a pre-paid UPS label.  When I called two weeks later, she told me they never received any such email with the UPS label.  So I call the casting company who immediately checked their records and confirmed not only the date but the time the email was sent.  I call the vet clinic back and a different employee looks through their emails and BAM--there it is. I have them forward me the emails just in case they had any ideas of deleting them to further cover up.   The next day, the first employee calls me back singing a different tune about how they actually DID receive the email but their policy is to not send out the cast until they receive the replacement kit etc...  She got caught in her lie and it's so obvious it's almost funny until I look at my dog limping around the house and I remember that this whole time, he's the one who is suffering.I finally get the chance to speak with Karen, a manager who changed her tune three times in less than ten minutes.  She was so busy trying to placate me, she ended up lying through her teeth and taking everything back when I caught her in the lie.  First she said that they don't send out the cast until they receive the replacement kit.  Then I ask her how long they sat on my dog's cast waiting for the kit and she says "We shipped it out actually before the kit got here."  To which I respond, "You just told me your policy is to wait for the replacement kit.  Now you're saying you DON'T need the kit to send out the cast.  So if that's the case, why didn't his go out two weeks ago, on the 18th?  He's been in pain and hobbling around the house and could have been braced by now."  And she actually said, "I misspoke, we do need the kit to send out the cast.  It must have all happened around the same time."Bull.  She went on to a more patronizing tone when I got irritated with all the misinformation and said she was sorry for the poor communication etc... When I asked her what she thought about one of her employees outright lying, she understandably denied that was the case and said, "No one is lying to you, that's not what's going on.  What do you want me to do here?  I already apologized and we keep rehashing the same scenario.  We will make the necessary adjustments and ensure that communication is better next time."It's not good enough, Sage.  You are here for the well-being of people's animals.  You would honesty sit on a device that could help one of your patients heal or at the very least prevent another injury just because you're looking out for yourselves (and honestly, I'm still unclear about this vague policy).  I cannot believe the interaction I've had with this place over the past two weeks.  Dr. Malinas was great, but the people she works for/with are liars and sadly, they do not have your pet's best interest in mind.  *Please note, I was not trying to get anything for free.  I was a paying customer and actually purchased this kit from a third party so the only thing that they would have done for me pro bono was to put the damn cast in a box and put the prepaid UPS stamp on it and my dog would have been braced by now. DR HESS and her staff has gone way beyond the call of duty for my dogs. We had a liter of 12 puppies and they got parvo. Of the puppies that survived she continued to treat them. Including one we rehomed. On Friday we lost our last puppy due to a severe infection. Dr Hess did all she could. She even volunteered to come in on Sunday to treat him. She cried with me as I described the loss we suffered friday. I am forever greatful for her service and the kindness she has shown to my family. Thank you for everything. I know we will all be greeted by the Angle /dubs pups on that fine day. I miss my puppies so much it hurts my heart to think about it. May you rest in peace Disney! Read Less

We no longer have pets, but we have grand dogs. We had our son's 12'year old dog this week-end. She was suffering from leg/back weakness, and decided to call Sage Veterinary on Friday of Memorial Day week-end. (We feared this was her end of life stage). Instead of giving us the long week-end/early out brush-off, they apologized that we would not be seen until 5:30, but we were grateful they would remain available. From the minute we arrived, the staff treated Nala as their own. They immediately worked on making sure she was comfortable until she could be evaluated.Dr. Hess examined her, suggested a course of evaluation, and then provided us a cost estimate.  We proceeded with the recommendation, and began treatment of pain shots and X-Rays. Dr. Hess used the X-rays to consult with us (ruptured disc) and gave us a step by step map to work for her recovery.We were super impressed with Dr. Hess and her staff, working late into the evening, showing extra care for our pet, and communicating very professionally and friendly, from the minute we made a phone call, until we left the hospital.A super clean and well organized facility and staff!We highly recommend Sage Veterinary for pet care! First off, the definition of 2 stars is "Meh. I've experienced better" So with that I want to stress that this place isn't bad. My dog and I have seen both Dr. Hess and Dr. Malinas. I believe they care about animals. And their prices are competitive if not better than some other places around. However, their bedside manner for treating pet owners is awful. Both times I felt belittled and I felt they looked at me like I am bad pet owner. I recently adopted my 3 yo dog from the SPCA. When you adopt a dog with an unknown past it can take a while for that dog to come out and become comfortable especially with strangers who are poking and prodding at them. These vets do not seem to be supportive, kind, or reassuring. At this point I have not decided if I will be remaining a client of this office. I have quite a bit of time before my pup will need to go back. I will be asking around to see if I can find a better fit for myself and my dog. Read Less

I want to start by saying this was one of my best experiences at a vet office, and I have had many. The staff was very friendly to my dog and I. The nurse and doctor sat on the floor of the examination room so that the dog would feel safer. The service was very prompt. I was not left waiting around for someone to take care of my dog. I will definitely be using this veterinary office again, and I will recommend them to my friends and family. I am very unhappy with the care my dog received at Sage Veterinary Care. When I called to discuss this I was told Dr. Malinas would return my call which she never did. Upon multiple attempts to talk with staff I finally was able to speak with Karen the office manager who was very rude and surly. She referred to me as "you people" which I am not sure if it was racially motivated or not. Judging by the character of the Veterinarians and the poor treatment of owners I do not believe that beloved pets are safe in their care. Read Less

We first met Dr. Hess when she was practicing at another clinic that has since gone out of business.  We were THRILLED when she opened her own practice last year, as she is one of the few vets in town that really knows avian care.  We have been in to see her several times for routine visits as well as illnesses, and every time she was professional and courteous, and educated us on what we need to do to treat the situation and help prevent future occurrences.On one occasion, when one of our cockatiels was experiencing troubling symptoms, Dr. Hess took care of us right away, and we were in to see her within an hour.I have not yet met Dr. Malinas, but she is probably equally good.Office staff is great, and we love how the birds greet everyone who comes in and leaves.  (One of the birds even meows!!!)  Clean, safe, caring environment. I don't know about Sage... It was really great when my sister and I took her dog in after he was attacked by another dog. Dr. Malinas was so great! Her actual care and consideration for our dog and for our questions was stunning. It is so hard to find someone so thorough. We had Dr. Hess as a follow up because Dr. Malinas was not available and she was not as helpful. It is so hard to find somewhere that I can trust with my dogs. I ended up going back with another dog... why? For another chance? And again Dr. Malinas was not there and again I left feeling unfulfilled. I don't know what to do.. my questions were not totally answered and I feel belittled with some of my concerns. Read Less

While Dr. Hess and Dr. Malinas were at Community Animal Hospital they took care of our dog and two cats. We've had to live out of state for the past three years and after moving back to Reno this spring we were happy to learn that they have opened their own clinic. We went to other vets while out of state but we haven't found anyone else who has the depth of experience and knowledge, and who stays as current in advances in veterinary care. Our dog and one cat are "elderly" and have had various problems. Drs. Hess and Malinas provide a more thoughtful and careful examination and diagnosis than we've found with most other vets, and they have identified things other vets have missed. They and their staff are warm, friendly and care very much about animals. We're delighted they are back in business and I strongly recommend them. Read Less

Had our first visit at Sage yesterday. The clinic is immaculately clean and well appointed. The staff were caring, compassionate, and professional. The vet who saw us grilled me with a lot of questions I would not have been asked at other clinics, and the answers to those questions along with a reasonable battery of diagnostic tests led to a course of treatment that has my dog feeling 80% better today.
