My husband and I have been bringing our cats to Dr. Sam and All Pets since July of 2013. The reason we went there initially was for the kindness in their grooming to my Gabriel, who was a 28-pound Maine Coon and sometimes had matted fur. He was a sweet, docile cat but working out mats on his fur made him VERY upset, and he had bitten several other groomers, so I was worried. But they told me not to worry, and one of the techs (Michelle) made a friend out of Gabriel (as much as possible) and she did a beautiful lion cut on him. We met Dr. Sam who did routine shots on him and an exam, and a relationship began with All Pets. Gabey was 12 when we started bringing him there.
We continued to bring Gabriel (and also our other cat Natasha) to Dr. Sam for regular shots and exams. Last August in 2015, during one of Gabey's grooming/exam appointments, blood was taken and it showed some small abnormality in his kidney functions. Dr. S prescribed Science Diet kidney formula and asked us to come back in 4-5 months to take blood again. In late December, Gabriel started to lose weight, and had had a couple of accidents with blood in his stool. I thought it was that we needed to take him off the kidney food and he was due for a blood test, so we brought him in. We also ok'd an x-ray to look at his kidneys.
After the exam and x-ray, there was good news and bad news. The good news was that the prescription food worked and his kidneys were fine, but the x-ray showed a mass. Dr. Sam suggested an ultrasound, and we approved that as well. The techs let me hold Gabriel while they did the ultrasound, which calmed him. Then Dr. Sam gave me the worst news I ever heard - my Gabriel had intestinal cancer.
I'm going to pause this review to mention this: Hearing bad news about a pet can make a person go nuts, either silently or loudly. In the moment, you want to blame everyone - especially the "messenger", the one who gives you the diagnosis, mostly - the doctor. You resent the money you have spent because often it can get very pricey and think that the doctor or the office is swindling you in some way. You get angry and don't know where to put that anger. At that moment in time, I was told that my cat had incurable cancer AND that I owed $900. Of course I wanted to lash out - who wouldn't? But that would have been the wrong thing to do, and unfair to Dr. Sam and All Pets.
Dr. Sam gave me a choice - I could put Gabriel through intestinal surgery and hope it would extend his life, or just let him live out the rest of his life and keep him comfortable. He offered me that choice, but also mentioned my 15-year-old cat might not survive surgery. I opted to let Gabey live out his life, and Dr. Sam gave me pain medication to give him when the time was coming near.
2 months later, when Gabriel couldn't walk anymore and had lost 6 pounds, we brought him in to All Pets again. Dr. Sam (and Michelle) put him down with a great deal of compassion. They printed his paws in sand and put the prints in a little shadow-box with a clipping of his beautiful fur. A few days later, we got a handwritten condolence card from the All Pets office.
But the story ends well. Today, I brought our new long-haired kitten to All Pets where he got the best of care. His name is Loki, he's adorable, and we look forward to another chapter with Dr. Sam, Michelle and the rest of the staff :) Read Less
