Expensive and not worth it!I brought my cat there to see a specialist versus going to my regular vet. What a big mistake! I scheduled a consultation for $ 232 and an ultrasound ( cost was approx. $ 600) which everyone promised would be enough to determine what was wrong with my boy since I had done other diagnostics before going there. The doctor I saw spent a total of ten minutes with me - 5 minutes before the ultrasound and 5 minutes afterwards. They had to shave my baby's belly to do the ultrasound and in the process cut him! What kind of clown does that to a cat? After the ultrasound was done, like I said I spoke with the doctor for 5 minutes only to hear that my cat either had IBD or Lymphoma/Cancer but to be sure I would need to do a $ 6000 biopsy. Of course I was freaked out by the thought of cancer and instead of spending any time going over my options, what would happen if he did have cancer, etc the vet led me to the door and said to go home and think about what I wanted to do. He could see I was upset but he was cold. My cat isn't old he's only 8. This guy has no bedside manner in a very frightening situation. My poor cat had a hard life before I brought him home from the shelter and he had been through so much, I was heartbroken. He's such a good boy. But that place is awful. It's all about volume. Get 'em in and get 'em out!I asked the front desk to send me the doctors report once it was ready. I had to call 3 times only to find out there was no report after I was told that it was ready and I could pick it up at any time. I felt a little stupid showing up and asking for a report that didn't exist.  So I asked for  the administrator's name and number which they gave me. I called three times over a course of a month and left three messages but she never called back. Luckily I used my Amex so I put the charge for the "imaginary consultation" into dispute and 30 days later after Amex had contacted them and they failed to reply I got a credit for the charge. I needed that money to bring my boy to another vet who would spend time with me and counsel me. Clearly I had already spent a ton of money trying to determine the problem so I couldn't afford a $6000 biopsy. I have another cat that has kidney issues  so having two cats with chronic health issues gets expensive -- vet bills, meds, prescription diets, etc. so thankfully I saw another vet who told me it was highly unlikely that Phillip had cancer and now I treat him for IBD. He is doing much better. But the vet at AERA from internal medicine has no business being a vet. He wanted nothing to do with me once I told him I couldn't afford the $6000 biopsy.I am just so glad I got some satisfaction from disputing their charges and winning. I hit them where it hurts. But most of all with guidance from the second vet my baby is doing better and that is what really matters to me.My advice would be never use a debit card or check to pay them. Use a credit card that will stand by you if you don't get the service you paid for.Better yet find another place to bring your pet if he/she needs a specialist. Read Less

We find Dr. Schott to be an excellent veterinarian. We took our Bitsy there the other day and the vet who diagnosed her eye condition (Dr. Schott was on vacation) was also excellent. We also like the staff, animal lovers all. Our vet bills are high, but they are everywhere in New Jersey. And our dogs are aging, so they need more skilled care. But we knew that going in and will continue to bring them to AHSC regardless of the cost. They mean the world to us. Read Less

This is a really nice place. Since I called I knew that The staff would be really friendly, specially the doctor. Doctor Hunt is a wonderful doctor, friendly and patience. My puppy broke her arm yerterday and the vet recommended to have a surgery. I check the reviews and this was one of the best places. I talked with some other daddies patients and they are happy with the staff and treatments. The hospital is very clean, they have a little bit of boxes on a side but is ok. My only real complain is about the chairs lol they are too hard if you need to wait the 3 hours that I need to wait. However they have a good waiting area with a soda machine, bathroom, TV and water fountain. They have a free/big enough parking lot. I was expecting a more expensive treatment but I guess that because the prognosis was better the treatment is different. The music is very relaxing... We will need to come every week for the next 6 weeks (at least) for the follow ups so I will update my review if something changes but so far everything is going good. Read Less

Today, one of my kittens was crushed by a scratching post while playing with his sister. Took him here and they immediately put him in the hands of a vet. The wait time was long, but worth it. He was diagnosed with head trauma. We were told the neurologist wasn’t in yet, and that they would have to keep him in overnight. Got charged $1600-2200. We haven’t paid the full bill yet, as we left before the neurologist came. But we did get to see my little baby looking okay before we left. I’ve taken one star off because of the wait and how expensive it is. Other than that, I’d totally recommend this hospital. 🐱🐶🐰🐍 Read Less

Dr. Levine and Debra her assistant are both so nice and helpful. We had our first appointment this morning and it went very well. They were organized, on time and Dr. Levine spent almost an hour sitting on the floor analyzing my pet and offering suggestions to help my pet with her anxiety. Then Debra came in to help go over the treatment packages. I cannot speak on the progress as we haven’t started anything suggested yet but in terms of the appointment, organization, and knowledge we highly recommend Dr. Levine. We look forward to work with their office again soon. Read Less

(Dog came out with a bandanna that says Wagging for a Cure!) Internal medicine is astonishing in the scope of diagnosis and care--I wish they could be my doctors. The surgeons , neurologist and orthopedist are superb--over the course of many years, I have needed them all. You cannot do better if you can afford it. Note that they Emergency Care doctors are perhaps not on the same level; I suspect they are young and still learning. Read Less

We brought our dog here after he was diagnosed with Stage 3 lymphoma.  We started him on a chemotherapy protocol after much discussion about different types and what type of outcome they may have.  I have worked in oncology research for the last 12 years, so I am very well versed in chemo protocols and lymphoma treatment and plans, and they had many options to choose from based on his expected outcome (which was poor because he had a T cell lymphoma which is very aggressive).  We went to the clinic weekly, got to know the techs and staff very well.  I understand that since this is also an Emergency clinic, people do not always have the best outcomes, but we had nothing but a great experience.  Our dog was happy to visit his new friends, and he was treated so well.  I was able to have honest and thorough conversations with the doctors (because of my background I had a lot of questions and experiences), and they always took the time to have a discussion with me.  The place is so busy, especially in the oncology side, and I hadn't spoken to one person there who had had a bad experience either.  Unfortunately, we lost our dog after he relapsed twice, but he made it two more months without treatment, and had a high quality of life.  The doctors at AERA always kept in touch with my regular vet, so he always knew what our status was, and after we had to make the difficult decision that it was time, our vet called AERA to let the staff know.  We immediately received a phone call from Dr. Alsarraf expressing her sympathy.  She had said to me at one of our visits for treatment, that our pup was the happiest guy she ever met.  It meant a lot that they could reach out during that time, even though we hadn't seen them in a couple of months.  I could go on and on, but if you are local to the area, and are dealing with a cancer diagnosis, I think this is an amazing place to end up. My son and I brought our critically ill dog Casey in yesterday and we were immediately taken into an exam room where a technician asked us what happened. We explained the situation and we proceeded to the waiting area while Casey was examined and was greeted by a very kind lady at the counter so she could register Casey. About 20 minutes later, Dr. Tusa came out and discussed with us Casey's fragile state in a very calm and gentle way along with the options of proceeding with additional examination or consider euthanasia. We then decided as a family on a conference call to choose euthanasia so as not to put our dear Casey through any more potential discomfort. I want to compliment Dr. Tusa and the other staff members for their caring, gentleness, compassion, and professionalism during this very difficult time for our family. If you are looking for gentle and compassionate care, this is the place to bring your beloved pet. Read Less

My husband and I went there with a 5 day old abandoned kitten that had started to have trouble breathing at 4pm. I actually been quite pleased with his progress: he came to me at 2.25oz three days prior and had gained an entire oz in the last two days. I was watching him closely, feeding every 2 hrs, heating pad. Even added some dextrose? Saw what I concluded from his 'open mouth breathing' to be aspiration pneumonia. FIFTEEN MINUTES later we were there and seen by Dr. Donna Coogan. She discussed this little guy as if he were a pair of shoes - might as well have run him over than bring him there. We knew intuitively this was not anyone concerned with saving his life. I have known this organization since it was in the original location so 30 years? She went over procedures I would never have authorized. They USED TO give you an estimate before they started and we were sitting waiting for it. The Dr returned telling me all that had been done to this poor kitten that couldn't breathe! He was FIVE DAYS OLD and scared to death and if she was representative of 'the caring' factor we decided let him die at home where WE DID CARE about him! He wasn't just a '$700 charge' to us! My heart broke for that kitten all alone and unable to breathe with catheters and adrenaline! Next thing 'Dr Caring' ran by us to the front desk as she yelled to the billing person 'HE ARRESTED. Take off those meds'!!! She ran right by me! And THAT was how I was informed my little kitten died! Some 'revenue-minded' person with no caring at all! And THAT is what I have experienced there! She never did come tell us in a more HUMANE WAY that the little guy had passed! Who took your manners AND compassion doctor??? Never saw anything like it! I'm still crying and believe if they hadn't bombarded him like that, treat the pneumonia, and 'easy does' on the autonomic nervous system? But no - you don't get to bill that way! They gave him that heart attack! I have Addison's and know all about it. Read Less

NEVER EVER EVER EVER will go to this place again!! Unfortunately, it will not let me put NO STARS. I brought my cat there because it would not stop throwing up and it was 10pm. We checked in and was never told how much just the visit would cost. I know we could have asked but that should be the very first thing they tell you. Since I could have asked, I am not really holding THAT against them but I am definitely amazed by the cost...over $250 for just walking in the door!! There was only 1 person ahead of us and I hadn't seen any pets/people leaving, so I figured we were the only ones there. Took us about 30-40 minutes to be seen. Once seen, I was told that they would do an x-ray and that it would be "around $200". They would also do blood work and it would be about the same. The vet said it would take about 35-40 mins so we went to the waiting room. OVER AN HOUR AND A HALF LATER, we were finally brought back in and was told that he "probably had a urinary tract infection because everything came back negative". We were told that we would be given medication and sent on our way. When the lady told us the price, I almost jumped over the counter! $1100!!!! They had run MANY other tests in addition to what we were told and we were never advised that it was being done, why they were doing it, what the test checked for and how much the additional testing would cost us. As humans, when we go to the hospital, the doctor always tells us what tests/procedures they plan on doing, why they have to do them, what they are checking for and keeps you up to speed during the whole time. This vet did NONE of that. We basically got seen, was told that 2 things were going to be done...didn't see or hear from ANYONE for almost 2 hours and then get WHOPPED with this bill!! OOOOHHHHHH!!!!! And about a week after the visit, I was talking with a client of mine and they too had brought their pet there with a negative result. BUT, this person also did some digging and found out that the vets...now get ready for this...WORK ON COMMISSION!!!!! Are you kidding me?!?!?!?!? Please please please...unless your pet is having major issues that make you think he won't make it through the night..wait til the morning to take your pet to your regular vet. Read Less

i want everyone to read this warning and please use it for yourself in the future because you may find yourself in a situation like mine. We had brought our dog in to the emergency hospital after our dog had been having seizures. When we went in there they had almost no idea what was going on. This concerned me because when a dog is having seizure like behavior there are a list of things it may be (after we had done our research). they kept him for three days and gave him back to us. They had come up with no explanation as to what it was, no medication, no answers. When i asked the lady if our dog was going to be ok, she said that she doesnt know. After all of the care they had done for my dog (which lead us nowhere) they charged us a very large amount of money. For no answers it seemed very unfair. Fast forward about a week. he had another set of seizures which we were very concerned about. We brought him in again and this time they had done the same thing. They kept him for the full three days and they ran three tests on him that were invasive and one of them was not even necessary. Again we came out with no answers and they gave us seizure medication to stop the seizures. We then brought him to a recommended vet that had more experience. Immediately she did an ultrasound on him and found a few irregularities that are now leading us to the diagnosis of what he has. In 30 minutes she had discovered issues that could be leading to the seizures and the issues at hand. When we had mentioned to her the tests that the animal hospital had ran on him at first she seemed concerned as if she couldnt believe they jumped to those measures immediately. Our regular vet also seemed very concerned that they had ran those tests on him as well. The take away from this is that the Animal Emergency & Referral Associates seem to be clueless as to figuring out issues that your dog will be having. This is their job, to solve issues with dogs and to have viable answers to issues. They had nothing for us, to be honest all they did was confuse us and lead us even farther away from what the issue actually is. I warn everyone who may be considering going here, and i know this was long, but if you value the safety and health of your pet i would definitely reconsider going to Animal Emergency & Referral Associates. It seemed like they were more worried about making money off of us than actually solving our problems. I dont want anybody else to have to go through what we did. Read Less

Outstanding, from reception to technicians to vetrinarians to specialist we deal with. Cost is MUCH more reasonable than "another local hospital" and the departments are all in the know on the pets history at all times. To put it simply I would trust our team to do surgery on a mosquito successfully. Dr. Larry Kantrowitz and his staff are the reason our baby Shorkie, Xena lived to see her 2nd birthday and they will no doubt continue to see her through until her incurable but manageable disease, Protein Losing Entropathy [PLE] is under control. Danielle and her staff are the ONLY reason I personally slept each time Xena has had a rough time & been admitted - they treat her like their own. The cost is NEVER "cheap" but we all take that responsibility on when we adopt our furry family members!!! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Love, Xena, Jenn and ScottRead Less

Our dog tore his ACL and we had a procedure done at another local vet which our dog didnt recover well from and did not get better. We brought him here to AERA and Dr. Hunt is amazing. He took the time to explain all of the procedures and which one he recommeded and why, he also explained why the first surgery was not successful and how this one would be different. Their post op videos and instructions are great and we have learned a lot. This recovery was a lot more enjoyable and less taxing on our dog than the first vet we went to. I highly recommend Dr. Hunt for any orthopedic surgeries. Our dog is recovering nicely and we are optimistic of his upcoming 2 month check in. Read Less

This Emergency Room is EXCELLENT. Dr. Justin Strauss and the staff at this EMERGENCY Hospital are extremely helpful and to the point. The reviews of this business DO NOT reflect the hospital at all. I dropped my 18 month old French Bulldog, by recommendation of my Primary Vet, to remove a foreign object stuck in his stomach. He was constantly regurgitating eating and not going to the bathroom. Upon arriving at the Hospital we were immediately admitted and had our pup on an IV for fluids being that he was dehydrated as well as medication to try and have his stomach empty. He was observed for the night and went for a procedure the next morning to see if they can extract the object, which was too big to pull out. I had seen the X-Ray before at my Primary Vet first and the blockage in the stomach was unable to be determined. The procedure was to see if the object can be broken up and removed without surgery and it was not. After the surgery they produced what they removed and it was ENORMOUS. Upon picking him up Dr. Strauss was handling a CARDIAC ARREST EMERGENCY, and we were waiting for about an hour before were were able to speak with him. Our pup is home safe and back to normal recovering. Dr. Strauss was very nice and informative once he had his patient stabilized and I wouldn't expect any less. PLEASE REMEMBER THIS IS AN EMERGENCY ROOM, NOT A REGULAR VETERINARIANS OFFICE. THEY ARE PRICEY AND VERY RUSHED AT TIMES BUT WOULD YOU EXPECT TO PAY THE SAME IN AN ER AS YOUR PRIMARY DOCTOR. NO. But they staff their ER with 24 HOUR EMERGENCY STAFF. They are very professional and informative. I wouldn't hesitate to bring my pets there again or in the future. Oncology department at this place is very incompetent. They prescribed aggressive chemo meds for my cat without checking if his kidney are strong enough to handle it. They already knew that he had diarrhea and dehydration for long time. If you want better treatment for your pet, go to AMC in New York City. There are enough studies online that kidney levels should be checked prior to administering adriamiycin. They never bothered to read these studies nor did they provide alternatives to us when we brought our cat to them. Shame on you for not valuing pet's life. Read Less

NEVER AGAIN!We were given the completely wrong information about our Chihuahua.  He was hit on the head and had a LARGE bump and was so swollen.  He then went through seizures that night which is why we went here.  We were told over and over and over  a TRAUMA could NOT cause seizures.  We were then told we should go to a neurological center since theirs was on vacation.  We considered placing our Chihuahua on anti seizure medication right away, or putting him down since the trauma repeatedly asked and then received the response with - ABSOLUTELY NOT.Our Chihuahua is older and has a small heart problem as well, never once had a seizure before this incident.  We just wanted our poor thing out of pain.  We were told that SHE WOULD NOT FROWN UPON US PUTTING HIM DOWN.  My mother and I were there for countless hours trying to figure out what was best for our baby.  The poor thing did not have any seizures while there, but had at least 6 or so before we arrived.  We truly were considering putting him down just because he looked like he was in so much pain.I asked if we could have an emergency shot to stop a seizure if we took him home.  We got one (THANK GOD) and left hours and hours later.  Next morning my mom took him to the local vet.  He looked right at him and said the poor thing is so swollen and in pain. And our vet said the seizures most definitely were from the bump on the head.  Our vet then gave us the right medication and he is doing a million times better.I then wanted to talk to the staff about what happened.  My mom and I both called and sent e-mails back in December and we were told that the head honcho was going to talk to the girl who helped us and get right back to me ASAP... still nothing.  UNPROFESSIONAL! My best friend Bubba / a french bulldog was referred to AERA... to have an MRI done .. which I was told there was no way an MRI could be done because Bubba was to weak... he would have passed if the the MRI WAS performed .. 7 Dr's looked at Bubba and told me that he had megaosofogus .. which he doesn't have.. has never ever had it .. finally I took Bubba to a new Dr which he couldn't understand how 7 different Dr's could not see what was wrong with Bubba .. Bubba almost died !! Because they were not treating him for what he has .. I spent 10k on my bubba. Cause I just could not and would not let him go .. I will never ever take bubba to animal emergency referral associates .. another thing they did to me . The day before I was going to pick up my bubba a Dr had I had never seen in the 5 days bubba was there .. all she cared about was the money .. when I clearly said how much do I have to pay tomorrow when I pick him up .. which she then replied by saying if u can't afford to pay it in full u can aply for a loan which I said no !!! I just need to know that exact amount so I can take care of it .. cause right at the front desk it says payment must be payed in full before your pet can be released. . to pick up bubba and they gave me a different bill then they gave me less then 10 hours ago... trying to charge me $1100 dollars more .. when they told me exactly what I had to pay the night before.. this hospital is all about the money .. the new vets exact words were these people were killing your bubba slowly .. they never ever even called to ask how he was doing 1 time !!! Not one call .. spent so much money .. I trusted these Dr's !!! When they had no clue what was wrong when the right Dr looked at his papers and x-rays and knew exactly what was wrong ... bubba is running around , playing , eating his normal food .. he is full of life because God led me to the right Dr .. I've had the worst experience with AERA.. I would not recommend them to anyone who loves there pet as much as I love my bubba .. 7 Dr's dropped the ball .. if I would have done what they told me to do bubba would be in doggy heaven.. but I felt it in my heart that they were so wrong and I was completely right ... We trust the Dr's that treat our little family members when they don't have the best interest in our little buddies ... just get more tests done to see if they can find out what's wrong ... that's another thing they tried to do same tests twice!!!!! I said are u kidding me I payed for that test .. their answer was u did??? I said I hope so because u charged me for it .. then he said I'm so sorry I over looked my notes .. never ever again .. and I will be going to that hospital and raising hell for the extra $1120 dollars they want to charge me when I have a copy of the bill they told me I had to pay to get my bubba out....  this place gets minus 100 stars... bubba would be dead if I listen to what they told me to do ... they should be completely ashamed of themselves Read Less

Read Less

He was diagnosed with head trauma. We were told the neurologist wasn’t in yet, and that they would have to keep him in overnight. Got charged $1600-2200. We haven’t paid the full bill yet, as we left before the neurologist came. But we did get to see my little baby looking okay before we left.

Are you kidding me?!?!?!?!? i want everyone to read this warning and please use it for yourself in the future because you may find yourself in a situation like mine.

Horrible experience!!! Misdiagnosed my cat and charged an arm and a leg to do so. If I could give no stars I would. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. I explained that I believed my cat swallowed something that he could not pass. I already had X-rays but my vet was closed and recommended that I go to an emergency care facility. They looked at the X-ray and did an examination. Without any blood work or anything else they wanted to charge me over $1200 for one night of an iv and "observation". By the way, it's $213 to walk in the door. The vet told me that she believed it could be pancreatitis. Gave my baby fluids. $89. At my vet fluids $20. Don't really know why she pulled that one out but told me to stop the medication from my vet. Well thank goodness I didn't listen bc that medicine helped my baby pass what he had swallowed. We just wanted to offer our thanks to Dr. Lloyd and the staff for everything you did for our dog Abby. We were so sad that we had to let her go after such a sudden and unexpected illness. The compassion that was shown to us and our two kids when we made the decision to let her go was so appreciated. It made a difficult decision and difficult time a little easier. My pug had a seizure and we brought him in on New Year's Day night. They wanted a deposit right away. Next day before I knew what they were going to do for my dog they wanted another "deposit". By the time we picked him up on Tuesday it cost $2550 for one day for a total cost $4300. When we picked him up his technician was very nice and explained a lot. They are a full service hospital and I know we need them but way too expensive. Thank goodness I could borrow money from my mom or I don't know what I would have done! Read Less

We brought are dog to see Dr. Rice for a dental consultation regarding are 13 month Mini Pin. Dr.Rice took the time and explained to us are best options, and was upfront about the cost for them. We went with having them extracted since they were not doing her any good in the way they were positioned. It certainly was expensive well over $3,000.00, But she did receive good care and the surgery went well. Some areas of opportunity for the hospital, Dr. Rice called when she was first placed under anesthesia and again after the sugary. It would have been nice to get a follow up phone call to see how she is doing, as well, as the follow up appointment is not for several weeks. We will be taking her to are regular Vet in a week, just to have peace of mind, until the follow up appointment. Read Less

Our 7 month old kitten Edgar had to be rushed here when he suddenly went into congestive heart failure. The staff and doctors here were quick to identify the issue and get him on oxygen, do the imaging and administer the meds, saving his life. Although the cardiologist wasn't on that Sunday, when he came in on Monday he called us and fully explained Edgar's enlarged heart condition and treatment. We just came back for Edgar's 6 month follow-up and the prognosis is looking better than anticipated. I have confidence in their professionalism and ability. My dog Tinsel had an allergic reaction last night and her whole face was swollen and her body in hives at 2am. I rushed her over here and within minutes Dr. Wolfe came out and treated her. She was extremely kind and gentle with Tinsel. After she gave Tinsel her shots the Vet Tech, who was also very nice, came out and told me just to wait a little for the Dr to see how Tinsel was doing after the shots. She went over everything with me and Tinsels swelling went down. I felt extremely comfortable with this Emergency office and also leaving with Tinsel. We were in and out within 40 minutes and the bill wasn't as bad as I expected which was a plus! My Luna (a 7 month old Dachshund) went for the Leptospirosis vaccine and 2 hours later started experiencing a mildly severe allergic reaction to it. Naturally, I panicked as I own two other dogs who have never reacted this way to any of their vaccines. Thanks to Animal Emergency, they made this situation quick and painless. After taking Luna right in, accessing her situation and discussing the plan with me, Luna was admitted for a night where she received top of the line care, the appropriate medications and love, love love! Kudos to the Animal Emergency staff for their professionalism, expertise and constant updates. I hope I never experience something of this nature again, but if I do I know I can count on the Animal Emergency team again and again! Thank you so much for everything!Read Less
