I was referred to City Pets and Dr. Amy by a friend at work.  Our dog had been limping for several days and it got worse one morning and sent me into a complete panic.  I called the office and they could not have been any nicer.  Polite, thorough, and beyond accommodating.  Dr. Amy fit Maisy into her schedule THE SAME day.  She came to our place, spent time with Maisy, figured out what was going on and Maisy is on the mend.  I am on the mend as well as it brought my stress level down immediately knowing that Maisy was going to be examined the same day and be on the road to recovery shortly there after.  This is SUCH a great find and we will absolutely use them again (and again!).  I've already recommended them to two friends! Dr. Amy Attas and the vet tech, Jeanine Lunz, were extremely professional and efficient. I woke up in the morning to find my cat with a swollen eye and was desperately trying to get her to a vet to get her checked out. Unfortunately, my cat hates being in a carrier and we couldn't get in one to take her to a vet. I called City Pets and they were able to come by within 2 hours of my call and although my cat is skittish, they were able to expertly handle and diagnose her. They also took the time to show me how I should handle her so I can more easier apply the medication to her. A few days I called City Pets to ask a question about my cat's condition, and Dr. Attas promptly called me back and answered my questions. I appreciate the level of service and professionalism and highly recommend them. It is expensive, but it is comforting to know you are getting quality care. Read Less

Normally I've had nothing but good experiences with Downtown Vet. However, yesterday I brought my pet in, and the Dr., Dr Helper, which is ironically his name, was scattered, and all over the place. First he said my cat was blocked, and then said he wasn't. He called the wrong Vet, to get my cat's previous medical records, and he honestly just seemed like he wanted to go home, and not be bothered. Next time I have to go here, I will specifically ask to not have this doctor. My experience with him was the worst one yet, and I think Downtown Associates would be better off with competent doctors who are present, and care about the well-being of the animal, versus just wanting you and your pet out, so that he could go home. Stay away from this doctor "Helper". Read Less

I started coming to DVA to pick up prescriptions that my vet would send over for convenience as they are an hour's drive away.  After a while, I decided to starting bringing my two dogs here.  I was pleasantly surprised at how well things went at first.  DVA doesn't assign you a doctor, and they don't take appointments.  It's walk-in only.  Each time you go, you're not likely to see the same doctor that you did last time.  Surprisingly, this worked out for me.  I am fond of Dr's Snarski and Schwartz. However, I had a very bad experience today.  I have a geriatric dog.  I was presented with the option of laser therapy for him to help with his joints and arthritis - purely to help him to be more comfortable.  I looked it up and found good things online about it and decided to give it a shot.  I make an appointment for 9am and the receptionist tells me he will be done around 11:30.  I wait until 1 and call and they tell me he's not been seen yet and won't be until after 2 o'clock.  Here are the problems:1. People at the front desk (friendly, professional) tell me that there is no set time line for these things, regardless of what I was told when appointment was made.2. My dog sat in their kennel area (I've never seen it) for four hours alone.  He's old, blind, and deaf.  3. No one calls to tell me that it's going to be later than they said (see item #1).  So, first world problem?  Maybe.  A one-time hiccup from an otherwise worthy service.  Perhaps.  Do I want to go back?  Not today.  Maybe I'll change my mind.  Oh and one more thing.  The doctor wrote a script for a medicine that I could pick up elsewhere at what is likely a better price.  I file the script at 1800petmeds.com.  DVA won't verify the script with them, and I am told today that they don't work with online pharmacies.  If that's your policy, fine.  Just tell me BEFORE you tell me to buy it elsewhere.  #nothappytoday Read Less

Complete rip off artists.  They're M.O. is to run every test imaginable - tests you do not need - and charge you at least 5 times what other vets will charge you.  I only go there when there is an urgent need and I can't easily get to another vet, and every single time I go, I feel super ripped off.  The vets in the office themselves are great, but I feel they are coerced by the owner to max out the amount they can suck out of each client, which makes me question the ethics of the vets and the owners.  This practice is there to make money and NOT for the benefit of the animals or its clients.  They should be investigated in my opinion. I brought my new dog in for a wellness checkup. It seemed like the doctor looked at him for 30 seconds and that was $75. I also needed to get him microchiped. Being as I didn't do my research before I came (my fault) they were able to charge me $140 for the microchipping. I didn't think that sounded unreasonable. Until I found out it shouldn't cost more than $30. This practice thinks they can get away with robbing people. Most likely because of their location. And although they are a short walk from my house, I will be driving my dog to another vet. I have also been told by others that they will overcharge you on everything based on quotes given from them and different vets. I'm giving them two stars because they were at least nice when I was there. But when I did call to ask why their price for microchipping was so high, the answer I received was "that's just our price." Read Less

This review relates almost entirely to the 5-star care I received from Dr. Janirka Ponce and Jane recently at the Downtown Jersey City location. However, I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 because (A) I believe the prices are too high, and (B) the doctors have no established hours in each specific office; they rotate among all 4 locations seemingly randomly and you never know when your preferred doctor will be back in your location. You might have to wait weeks to see your doctor again. Earlier this month, I went to DVA and saw a different doctor for my dog's sudden itchy skin condition. I returned this past weekend because my dog's condition had severely worsened, and I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Ponce and Jane. They generously spent time with my dog and me, they were friendly and had good senses of humor, they answered all of my questions, and most importantly, they tailored their approach based on the unique needs of my dog. Dr. Ponce recommended tests and procedures but never once pressured me to make a decision on the spot. Before any steps were taken, Jane and Dr. Ponce brought me a breakdown of all of the costs and explained the pros and cons of each treatment/test before I approved their next steps. Best of all, they treated my (extremely nervous and frantic) pet with attention and love. I felt at ease knowing that my dog was in their hands. Dr. Ponce also promptly followed up with me today with my pet's lab results. She spent a generous 20 minutes on the phone with me, giving me a detailed explanation of the results and discussing next steps. I will certainly be back to see her. I can't recommend Dr. Ponce and Jane highly enough. Thank you for your help! Read Less

Downtown Veterinary Associates acted in an unethical manner that jeopardized the life of our dog. They treated our family and our dog with disrespect and condescension. I really wanted to have a good experience, but I cannot recommend them after witnessing such gross medical negligence. As you read this review, try to imagine what would have happened if this had been a child. The terrible thing is that what happened was all about ego (I think? I still don't understand.) We recently moved to JC, so we were looking for a new vet. We took our dog who has Addison's disease to get examined and get a Rx refill for his monthly injection (Addison's dogs must have a shot of Percorten V every few weeks or they will lapse into a coma and die. It's very serious but completely treatable with meds) I let the attending veterinarian know that I filled my dog's Percorten V Rx at an online pharmacy.  I explained that I place the order and provide contact information for the vet, and then the pharmacy calls the prescribing veterinarian to confirm. Then the pharmacy ships me my dog's medication. The vet said this was no problem, especially because it was urgent and my dog had to have his shot *next week*. I placed the order that day. A few days later my dog's medication still had not arrived so I called the online pharmacy. They let me know that DVA refused to verify the Percorten  Rx. So I called DVA. They were extremely rude to me and told me that there were no on-duty veterinarians who would be willing to confirm the Rx over the phone with the online pharmacy. A flat out refusal. Really? I have a paper script in my hand, they have a record of it, and they would not do what they said they would do. Even if they had confirmed the Rx when I called to check, we would not have gotten the drug in time for our dog's shot. They had the audacity to offer to give my dog his shot for half-price (I do the shot at home so It costs me $45 a month compared to the $250+ I've been quoted at vet offices. I have no idea what they would have charged me but it wouldn't have been $45). They *did not do what they sad they would do in the first place.*  This is unethical behavior and endangered the life of our dog. Not the kind of people or business practices I want involved with the care of our dogs. Can you imagine if this was a child and a doctor acted this way? In the end, I was able to get our Dog's medication in time, but with no help from DVA. It's really a shame because we had a pretty good experience at the place initially. They were fine with taking our $800 but would not confirm the life-saving Rx that *they wrote* for our dog with an online pharmacy. You should know this if you are considering taking your canine or feline family members there for medical care. Read Less

This place is the only one I trust in NJ.My dog is an old lady, with a bunch of issues.. she is getting old and bad-tempered. However, Dr. Ng can handle my Lana amazingly well. In the past I had problems because Lana knows how to bite, and as she is now old with a small heart issue, not all places want to take care of her.. Recently, Lana had an hernia repair, and her previous doctor was not comfortable to perform the surgery. Honestly I was also not certain about them as well.. so I went to see Dr. Ng.. we have a one-hour drive to see her as we now live far from Jersey City, but it is worth it. Since the first time I always felt so sure about Dr. Ng and her staff, I can trust they will do all in their power to make Lana feel better. The surgery was a great success, Lana is now playing like a puppy, and I don't have to worry about this anymore. Thank you Dr. Ng and Downtown Veterinary, you are the best. I was referred to City Pets and Dr Amy Attas (and partner Dr Danielle Dalton) by another in house veterinarian who was highly recommended. We are here for my daughter to take pre college classes, so the trip from Michigan to NYC was too much for our Lucy, who had two seizures on two consecutive nights. She also was feeling very warm and getting dehydrated from this. Dr Attas took the call immediately. She arrived with her assistant Janine (spelling,?, sorry ) and they took a history and began examination. She has a very calm and kind persona and she offered a lot of sage advice as well as administering a bolus of fluid to help with the dehydration. When my dog wanted to come to me in between getting her weight and heart auscultated, they were patient and gave us a minute before proceeding. My dog responded very well to both the doctor and tech without needing any treats. Lucy seemed to perk up during the time they were still here and definitely looked and acted more herself within 30 minutes of the treatment. The doctor was very informed and had great bedside manner with my pet as well as with my daughter and I. I would recommend Dr Attas and City Pets to anyone looking for emergency care in NYC who like us, was needing immediate care, didn't have access to a car and wanted high level care for our beloved pet whose acuity level was uncertain. We are hoping not to see you again before we leave home for Michigan, but it was sure very nice to meet you and have you treat our Lucy. Thank you very much for hopefully diverting a crisis situation. Read Less

Is there negative stars I can give this place? I used to work as a vet tech, so I know what to expect when it comes to pet healthcare. So, can I just say F$&!* this place!! NEGLIGENT AND PURELY FOR PROFIT!!!Most importantly: the vet taking care of us was Dr. Lenihan Now to my story: My dog, Sophie, got her foot caught in an escalator the Saturday before I brought her in (I brought her in that Monday). It caused a deep laceration on the bottom of her front right paw, and possibly more injury under the surface, as she refused to put any weight on it. After inspecting the wound, the vet told me that having x-rays done was an option to see if they needed to splint her leg which I expected. The cost of the x-Ray $250 for two views of her foot. After I refused because I knew of another clinic that would take x-rays for MUCH less, she then told me to keep her paw bandaged and that if it didn't begin to heal by the end of the week, that I may need to bring her back in for sutures which they would have to put her under for. They also started her on antibiotics and gave her pain meds which is the main reason I didn't wait for the cheaper vet the next day. When I got the bill they charged me $74 for "medical exam", $48 for "bandage-basic small", and $12 each for the two medications. That Wednesday (two days later), I took her into Summit Animal Clinic in Union City to get an x-ray and a second opinion as her paw seemed to be getting more tender. The x-Ray came back normal thankfully, but when Dr. Carlos took the bandage off and looked at the wound he IMMEDIATELY called an orthopedic specialist to send me to. Dr.Carlos didn't charge me a penny for the x-Ray and exam and sent me to Dr. Michael at Lyndhurst Animal Hospital. I arrived in lyndhurst around 8:30pm that same night and Dr.Michael saw my dog within 30 minutes. He looked at her paw and asked who the first vet was. When I answered and told them how expensive it was he said that they could have charged me $10,000 and they still would not have been able to treat the injury. Sophie's laceration was very deep and complicated and required a specialist to fix it so it would heal correctly. More so, had I waited until the end of the week to take her back to this vet, there would have been no other option but to AMPUTATE HER TOE as the tissue was already beginning to die. He said he would try his best to get circulation, but there were no guarantees that he wouldn't have to amputate her toe that night. He put Sophie under and began surgery. 45 minutes later gave me the good news that he was able to get circulation back in her toe. His reconstructive work on her paw was something that most human surgeons would envy. And he charged me probably an eighth of what is would have cost at this place!!! So again. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE!!! Read Less

I've been taking my dog  to Downtown for 7+ yrs and I have to say their care and concern has been consistently going down since. I took my dog to get her nails trimmed last week and came home to find they cut almost 10 of her digits down to the red part of her flesh! She had yellow gel on 2 of them to stop bleeding. She was licking obsessively over the weekend so took a closer look and noticed that two of the nail ( the last toe) were not properly trimmed; they had jagged nail edges that have been cutting into the side of her other toe causing  a cut that was raw, swollen and looked like it had pus. It started bleeding when she walks. Today too her back to the vet explained what happened to the doctor with pictures never got an apology; he basically trimmed her hair around the cuts then used his finger  to rub back and forth over her cut a couple of times and told me to put a cream on it. Could not even be bothered to put the medication on her himself!! The lady at the reception was very nice and apologetic but I was told to pay $28 for the  medication cream " but they told me my evaluation was "free". That's it no apology, no remorse!! Read Less

I'm hesitant to write a great review because this place is already super popular, however they deserve it.They accept walk-ins which is really convenient, assuming you're ok to come at an off time, or be patient on a Saturday morning. There are a variety of doctors on staff, some with more experience than others. In general we found them to be very friendly and nice with reasonably priced services. We highly recommend them!! Read Less

I used to bring my puppy here for routine check ups.Apparently it was good until yesterday, when I took my puppy to the clinic, as she had diarrhea for the past 2 days.Dr. Irene Lentis was taking care of us.She checked the body temperature, looked at undertail area, at skin and eyes and palpatated the abdomen.  I was expecting to be asked to drop off the fecals for analysis or be scheduled for a blood test or anything that might explain the diarrhea. She never proposed any ideas of what could cause the problem, instead I was takling, making assumptions of what it could be.All we got is the antibotics and diet advise, which is fiber diet and plain one.Fiber food for a 5 months puppy? Be serious. This is not a grown up dog, its a growing puppy!Plain diet is chicken and rise.  I was gibing rice for the past few days to my dog and when I asked how to cook chiken, Dr. said its already cooked and I can buy it at the facility.  She never told me what is the advantage of that special chicken and rice food of theirs. All she cared about is how to sell the food.My dog is my family. I want to see care for her from the vet we trust our baby with.I am sorry Irene Lentis, but I will not recommend my friends to bring their pets to you.Now the clinic gets 1 star. Read Less

We took our dog Buster here today for aCheckup and were very pleased. The process was quick and simple to check in and it's great that you don't need an appointment! The tech and vet were both so fantastic. They really took their time making Buster feel comfortable and Dr Oratio was very informative and thorough, answering all my questions and never making us feel rushed despite the fact that she spent so much time examining Buster. We were never pressured to buy anything, and the prices were totally reasonable. To people who think they aren't, it's 2015: healthcare is expensive, but it's an investment that you owe your pet. Buster loved it there so much that he didn't want to leave, even though he got two needle biopsies, blood work, and vaccines...he whined when we left! Haha. Overall, this is a great place, especially for all my fellow MetroVet refugees. Read Less

Everyone was really nice and seemed to care, but I feel like the expense is too much.  First, I paid my bill and was looking at the invoice and noticed a $21 charge for a food item I didn't say I wanted, nor had the tech brought out with the medication.  They removed it but I felt like it was shady to put that on there without telling me and that if I hadn't looked at my bill closely, I would have just paid $21 for nothing. Also, my cat is 5 years old, yet he received a "geriatric" blood panel.  When I asked about this, they told me that this is just what the panel is called and it was not based on his age.  If this is the standard panel they give all patients, why?  This was not explained to me at all.  I left feeling like the main goal was to charge as much as possible, not treat my pet. I was happy with the care my cats receive here. Routine visits cost a reasonable fee, although when one of our cats needed some surgery, it was pricier than we had expected. That said, the care was excellent and our cat recovered very well, which is, of course, the most important thing. The only real complaints I'd have is that the place can be crowded on weekends, so don't plan on a quick visit. Also, I wish the staff treated people as well as they treat the animals--it is not the friendliest vet clinic I've ever visited. But the bottom line is that so long as our pets get great care, that's all that matters, and we have been happy with the Downtown Veterinary Associates on that score. Read Less

Read Less

Went in today for a kitty with UTI symptoms. The vet tech, Joe, was really great with her, held her and pet her and kept her occupied while I was talking to Dr. Snarski. The vet also seemed really good and thorough and gave me all of the diagnostic options and had me choose what I was comfortable with doing. The total was a little more than I'm used to paying, but only because of the urinalysis. All of the other charges are comparable to what I've paid in the past. Overall, happy customer/patient. Very happy with this office. All vets are professional, pleasant and competent. We would not entrust the care of our two cats, Castor and Pollux, to anyone but City Pets. Dr Attas and Dr Dalton, along with their assistants and staff, are consummate professionals. They provide thorough follow-up, are excellent communicators, and are gentle and thoughtful. Of course the fees may be a tad higher than in-office visits, but not by much --- and it is worth the modest difference in price to receive such excellent care and attention at home. Read Less

We love this place!

Read Less

All of Dr. Tudors locations and Staff are excellent. The comfort of the animal comes first. The prices for the NY/NJ area are very fair. I have been going there for over 6 years and have never been asked to give a test that was not needed, which is more than I can say for the area competition. I also have a very good friend that has 5 cats and is very budget conscious. He has never had a complaint. I've felt comfortable with all the vets I have taken my 4 pets to over the years. I took a stray cat here recently. I wanted to have him scanned for a microchip and tested for any health issues. The staff was beyond friendly! They were very gentle with him and since he had no home to speak of, I decided to adopt him. The staff reviewed cost estimates with me and were informative about how to properly feed my new cat. They provided me with a starter kit of Science Diet food and a carrier to take him home. Based on my experience, I can't imagine anyone has anything negative to say about them.Read Less
