Having recently moved to the area, this was my first time to the Plainfield Animal Hospital. My 7 year old cat had been barely eating and throwing up what little he did eat. I called in the morning and was told to bring him in that day. The staff at the front desk were very friendly towards the incoming pets and owners so the atmosphere was very welcoming. We saw Dr Sun and she was absolutely wonderful. I have seen many vets over the years but she is the first that truly connects with both pet and owner. She listened to me, observed my cat and had a very warm personality. She took her time with us and explained everything clearly. When we discussed our options to work toward a diagnosis, she explained my options as well as the cost for each. This was a first! I am so happy with the care my pets receive here. My 17 yr old kitty was suffering from dental disease, but showed no signs. He needed surgery with extractions. Dr Shekk is a smart, caring vet. She explained at length what the surgery will entail. Dr Lyons did the surgery. She called me in the middle of the procedure to inform me of what was going on, as if she knew I was worried! I have nothing but good to say about the treatment given to my two cats brought to Plainfield Animal Hospital to be 'fixed'. Throughout, the staff was kind, sympathetic and concerned. Particularly with my male cat for which rescheduling had to be done due to the difficulty in 'capturing' him to bring in. Almost as if he knew what he was going for!Originally scheduled for a Tuesday appointment, the following Sunday, I informed the receptionist that he could've been pushed into his carrier, but since I knew surgeries are not performed then I figured he couldn't be taken. When mentioning this the receptionist said 'you could've brought him in'. After several cancellations, for which another facility might have charged additional, he was finally 'caged' the following Tuesday... a full week after the initial booking. While check in is 8-9AM Jackie said he could be brought in and kept overnight. This was at about 6PM that evening. Wednesday morning Dr. Lyons phoned to say he would be her first surgery. Then she called back about 45 minutes later to tell me everything went well. We have been coming here since we moved to NJ in 2013. They have given the best of care to all of our kitties. We have a diabetic cat that we board there when we travel, and they love her so much! They even take special care with our big boy who is not so nice to them. Probably the worst vet you can take ur pet to. They scammed me by insisting I do more and more exams for my dog who wasn't feeling well just so they can take more of my money. I had to pay for medicine that actually made my dog even more sick.. when i finally stopped giving him the medication and stopped taking him there is when he finally got better. This is the worst possible place to take your pet. They're money hungry and do whatever they can to get as much out of you without much concern for your pet. I took my sick 12 year old lab here only for them to try and charge us $2500 to hospitalize her which they told us was not guaranteed to help. Another option was to get her injected with a fluid pouch and take her home along with meds that the doctor told us would most likely help ease some of her pain. Once we took her home, she was still extremely lethargic (we understand she's old but were expecting some sort of improvement) even after being given the injection and the medicine so we called the office to speak with the doctor once more. When we spoke, the doctor was extremely rude and told us a completely different story about our dogs condition than she did when we were in the office earlier that day. We are well aware of her age and likelihood of pulling through considering how sick she is, but one would think an animal doctor would try to show some sort of empathy. Had a situation with my dogs (2) that needed immediate attention. I contacted Plainfield Animal Hospital after calling two other vets that were booked up and would not see my dogs. The receptionist was very calming and gave me an appointment within the hour. They thought my dogs had something contagious so they had one of their staff members meet us at our car and escort us directly into an examination room. Dr. Sun listened to my concerns and was able to relieve my fear by testing my dogs and delivering results in 15 minutes. She was very professional and extremely thorough. Amazing service here all around! My cat Oreo had an asthma attack at home. I called right away and the lady who answered very quickly pulled up Oreo folder and said bring her in right away. Brought her in and within seconds a tech came and got Oreo bringing her to the back. The vet was amazing very nice just amazing. They gave Oreo great service and Oreo right now is doing great! Referred by a co-worker and happy to find out that they had evening hours. Walked in and we were greeted by a friendly staff. Our appointment was for 7 p.m and they had as in the exam room by 7:05. Everyone was knowledgeable, extremely kind and the Dr took her time explaining exactly what was going on.  I did not look at the reviews before going but after reading them I might have had second thoughts after reading the mixed reviews. Most people are more people are apt to complain then take the time to praise.  While I  cannot speak for other people who reviewed poorly, I cannot stress enough that  the staff at the desk and the doctor were incredibly kind and attentive.   We were looking for a new vet for our cat Muffin because our previous doctor had absolutely no personality and no bedside manner all they cared about was the bill. This was our first visit here and we have definitely found a new home for our pet.  If you go to their website they offer a free first exam coupon. All of the doctors and team there have been great. Our Squeakers has a difficult case of diabetes that we have been fighting for a year. The team here has listened to our concerns, given their best advice, and referred us for a consult with a specialist. I had a great experience here yesterday. There aren't too many vets open on Sundays, and more so there aren't a lot of exotic vets, and even more so not a lot of exotic vets with a decent amount of rabbit-treating experience, so when my rabbit was having some gastrointestinal problems on Saturday night, I was relieved to find this place. I know I should have located a vet before any problems occurred...live and learn.When I made the first phone call, the staff was very friendly and helped schedule the earliest appointment.  When I got there 20 minutes early, the receptionist saw me and asked if my bunny wasn't doing well - I said he wasn't eating or pooping and if they could plug in his heating pad, and she immediately called the vet techs to take him to the back. It made me relieved that even the receptionist could recognize that my pet was sick and not just there for blood work or a regular check up. Another vet in the area I called said they had an appointment available for 5 pm, and if I came any earlier they'd charge me emergency fees. So, not only did my bunny get an appointment at 12:40 pm (when I called at 10:15 am), he also got immediate attention and care upon arrival. The vet tech who came to get him from the waiting room was very cheerful and pleasant and reassured me that they would take a look at him in the back.  5 minutes later she came out and said he was doing ok and the doctor would examine him shortly. 5 more minutes later she came out and said my mom and I could go into an exam room while my rabbit was being examined by Dr. Loomis, and then the doctor came in to discuss with me what made me bring him in and then he told me his plan of treatment and then went back to treat him. About 20 minutes later the Dr. Loomis told me everything he had done, answered all my questions, and gave me instructions for home care. He asked if I had enough syringes at home for medication and gave me some extras. He said I could call him if I had any other questions at either of the hospitals he worked at.I called him today (Monday) with some questions, and he took the time to explain things to me. I've been very anxious worried about my bunny the last 2 days, and Dr. Loomis really addressed everything well.  I've had experiences with 2 other rabbit vets and he is the best of the 3.Reasonable procedures and prices in comparison as well. I honestly expected additional diagnostic procedures, but all is well today with my rabbit and I couldn't be more thankful that I brought him to Dr. Loomis at PAH yesterday.In the hour I was there, the patients I saw were: a parrot, a cat, a bearded dragon, two snakes, four dogs, and my rabbit. Dr. Loomis really is an exotics vet! It was reassuring to see so many different animals.To the receptionists, vet techs, Dr. Loomis, and all staff at Plainfield Animal Hospital, thank you for your positive attitudes, friendliness, and help! I have been bringing my pets here since 1999. The hospital used to be owned by Dr. Linick. He was a caring, knowledgeable vet and the practice was run well, but ever since he sold it and left, they care more about padding your bill and not doing their jobs than their clients' pets. The front desk staff is a joke. They will acknowledge you when they feel like it, even though they aren't busy with anything else. Many times after checking in I've been left waiting nearly 45 minutes past my pet's appointment time, which would be fine if I was told that the vets are running late due to an emergency or something (they happen, no big deal), but I was never once kept in the loop. One time I listened to them debate the benefits and downsides of coconut oil. Another time, one of the staff wouldn't stop complaining about how hungry he was and that he wanted to go eat his lunch. The front desk supervisor, Barbara, has no problem with letting this circus happen. She herself repeatedly interrupts and talks down to customers when they are in the middle of speaking to her. Watch out especially for another front desk worker, an older woman with gray hair named Terry. A good friend of the front desk supervisor, she is the least professional of the bunch and has picked up the habit of interrupting customers. She especially does this when she doesn't approve of the way you are speaking to her beloved supervisor, and she will let you know that. (What is this, third grade?)Dr. Loomis is now in charge of the vets. He obviously cares a lot about making money. The prices are high to begin with, and on top of that they like to charge for every little thing. Watch the vets closely. Ask questions. Let them know what procedure(s) your pet is there for. If it's just for a shot, make sure your pet is given only that shot and not anything unnecessary. If you did not authorize a procedure or exam that they are doing, immediately stop them and let them know your pet isn't there for that particular thing. They will try to sneak in exams that aren't necessary and then charge you for them. It also takes a very long time to check out and pay, but hey, you get to listen to the circus at the front desk again.I won't be bringing my pets back to this sorry excuse for a practice. Read Less

Dr. Boyce and staff are the kindest, best veterinary practice I have ever dealt with. All of my 3 cats have had the best doctors here, Dr Boyce and Dr. Lyons are so good with my cats. Very kind, caring doctors and staff that want the best health for our animals. I strongly recommend gopetplan.com for insurance. $200 a year per cat and covers up to 80% up to $20,000 a year after deductible. Well worth it if needed, but hopefully you won't need to use it. Dr. Boyce answers all your questions and really cares about your animals. I wouldn't go anywhere else. Quality care In a clean and well run veterinary practice. We love them. Make sure you ask for copies of your pets labs and other tests. Comes in handy if needed for emergency visits. I strongly recommend sprinkling freeze dried chicken in a plate, then adding any medications if needed,then more chicken on top and then their wet food. My cat ate everything and got the medicine down. ps: I needed a urine from him so when I saw him entering the litter box I put on a disposable glove and as he squatted down, I scooped my hand behind him and bingo! I placed a specimen cup( you could use a washed out prescription bottle or small Tupperware) right in the stream of his urine. The best way to get it. I also recommend placing the clean litter box somewhere out of the Norm, like in the middle of the kitchen or living room. They can't resist using it. Wishing you all good health and happiness. have been there a few times for mutliple pets. The front staff is friendly most of the time. The head dr isn't very welcoming and seems to be in a rush to get out of your visit. Once took a cat there who became ill. They did X-ray and some shots. Told me it was either asthma or fluid around lungs. He died within 12 hours from heart attack. Bill was $700 and wasn't able to get even a partial refund. Know they aren't miracle workers but the right diagnosis would have helped me make a better decision and allowed me to put the cat down instead of allowing him to suffer for hours. This is the only facility that I have come across that I have trusted for my fur baby.  The vets there are top notch, facility clean, latest equipment and staff friendly when you get their attention.They are on the pricey side but it's priceless when it comes to the care for your fur baby as I treat her like my own child.  You pay for what you get and would recommend them.  I am impressed with their knowledgeable vets and they are super friendly, personably and willing to explain in detail what's going on.  This hosipital also follows up with you to ensure everything is okay if your pet came in for sickness.Their pricing is competitive but rest assured it will be the proper care.  It's no different than you would for your human child.Come here and you will be a happy. I have been taking my pug here for several years on and off. Now that writer living close by, this has been his primary vet for the past 2 years. I've mostly brought him there for his allergies and we've seen several doctors. I hated bringing him there because I felt like no matter what his ailment was at the time, I always ended paying $300-400 each visit. That's not an exaggeration. However, I put up with it for convenience.Most recently I brought him there because he was very lethargic for a few days and getting progressively worse. We saw Dr. Loomis. He took blood work and determined that his red blood cells were very low. He then took an x-ray and saw a "blockage" in his abdomen. Without performing any other diagnostics, he said the blockage must be cancer and its attacking his blood cells so we should just put him down. My dog is 6 years old. Pugs live between 11-14 years. I couldn't believe that was his response. I told him no and that there must be more they could do. He said they'd keep him there overnight, get him hydrated and check his blood in the morning. We saw Dr. Fine the following morning. He was very professional and trusting. The "blockage" that Loomis thought was cancer, was poop which my dog had passed overnight. Ultimately, his blood counts continued to decrease and Dr. Fine suggested that we take him to a specialist (not put him down like Loomis suggested). We bright him to Northstar Vets and it was determined that he has an auto immune disease. They gave him a blood transfusion and put him on various medications. He's doing wonderful and completely back to normal. If I had followed Dr. Loomis' advice, I would no longer have my sweet dog. Read Less

NEVER, EVER AGAIN.  Maybe they are too big, or maybe they are just inefficient.  They have a ton of people working there, but they are completely mismanaged.  A huge disconnect between what goes on in the examining room and what happens out front.  Checkout took forever especially when medication was involved.  Always.  Our dog was a patient for 11 years because Dr. Shekk was great.  After we put our dog down (in the examining room) and were in the front crying, the person at the desk asked if we needed medication or a follow up appointment. NO JOKE.  Two months later we have a new dog and we are at a different practice.  This other practice is not new and fancy, but the staff actually knows what is going on and we feel like they actually care. We've been with Plainfield Animal Hospital for approximately 5 years and recently visited for our dog Roscoe's annual wellness exam. We are very happy with the medical care received by all of the doctors and feel they are quite thorough. DONT LET THEM JUST GO WILLY NILLY WITH RANDOM FEES! They just want to charge you for everything!!! Previously I've always recommend this vet but no longer I'm sorry but to come in when your pet is sick and they assume what is wrong that's a problem then to come back the next day when your pet gets sicker just to be charged another office visit fee is ridiculous! Charging for tests and lab work I can understand but if you are coming in back to back there is no reason for multiple office fees! To top it off drawing blood for one test then wanting to take blood again another day for more test when all that could have been done in the beginning!!!! They don't even look at the chart before coming into the room to see why you are coming in! I called the front desk and they tried getting me to get my pets vaccinations done while she's sick instead of waiting till the following week that's just not right! They don't care about your pets well being they just care about all these fees that they come up with I will no longer be bringing my pet here. Honestly wish yelp didn't even make me put one star. They were able to see me and my ferret, evaluate his condition, and perform emergency surgery within an hour of my arrival, on a Sunday even! Wish I could give a "half" star - I would really rather rate at a 4.5 STAR! I've been truly impressed with most of the veterinarians here. It was difficult for me to choose a vet after having been with our previous vet for several years (we recently moved here and that vet is about 3.5 hours away now, hence the vet change) I take both of my cats and my small Chihuahua here. There is only one veterinarian who I was not a huge fan of, but that issue can be fixed by simply requesting our favorite veterinarian before every visit! Always kept very clean and the veterinarian techs/assistants are so kind and patient. They seem to really love their jobs and that makes for a pleasant experience for pets and pet owners alike. Today was my third visit with my cat milo for urinary tract issues...first time i was impressed by the new facility and the staff there are all very friendly ..each time i called to make an appointment for my cat i was taken immediatly. upon arrival we are checked in and never waited longer then a few minutes to be put in the room to wait for vet...from there same, vet came in promptly..everything that they did was explained first. They treated my cat like we treat him..and that says alot. all three times we had different vets and they all took their time with us explaining what was needed to be done and if we understood ect...so i am very pleased with whom ever see's my cat there because they all are wonderful.. and they also call us to check on him a few days later to see how he is doing. I have always gone here and was pleased with the compassion and medical attention given our pets by Dr Otero. Today we were seen by Dr Geronimo and this is the first time I felt poorly about my visit. A very little amount of time was spent with us and the estimate provided and we agreed to was not honored at check out! The dose and fee for a medical injection was doubled and no one advised us of this increase The receptionist though calm voiced was patronizing yet not willing to provide much assistance. .I must commend the tech, she was awesome and actually took time to explain and guide us! If not for her we would have left over $200 poorer and with no more knowledge then we entered! I am thoroughly disappointed and wishing I had waited until Dr Otero was in so I would feel i was treated by a caring doctor. I don't know anyone who doesn't consider their pet a member of the family.  Hence, choosing the right health care professionals for your pet is extremely important.  After all, your pet may be the most helpless member of your family.  Their lives are depending on you and your actions.I have been a long time fan of this facility, traveling about 12 miles to go there instead of close by facilities, until this morning.  I brought my dog in for a wellness visit.  We arrived at about 11:42, and had an 11:40 appointment.  We checked in and were told that being 2 minutes late was not a problem.  We were brought into the exam room quickly.  Though my dog was getting nervous, we waited.  And waited.  And waited.  Then I was told that the doctor's 12:00 appointment had arrived and she would not be available to see us.  I was told that their is a new person deciding who can and cannot be seen. I'm not sure if it's a new person or a new policy, but either way, I do not find this acceptable.  I wouldn't find this acceptable if it was for myself, why would I find it okay for my pet?  I left another vet's office because every time we visited, she saw another doctor.  They have lost a client as well as any advertising I provided for 2 minutes. Clean facility with caring and knowledgable service. Thankfully our emergencies have have been few -- every time there has been one, however, we have been well taken care of and always felt that they had all of the bases covered allowing us to make the best decisions for whatever the problem was that we were facing. It was my dog's first 3 days stay at the PAH and it will be the LAST ONE. When I arrived to pick him up, I have to go to the back of the building myself to get him. In 3 days none of the staff members was able to create rapport with him. Sparks, my dog was all scared at one of the corners of his crate. The worse thing was I could see that he has not been taken out at all in 3 days and the crate was soiled with urine and poop all over. My dog stank horrible. I have to get him inside my car all wet on urine. Needless to say I bathed him as soon we got home. If they can not handle all type of dogs they should be doing that type of business. I am glad I did not allowed them to neuter Sparks as they were expecting me to do it. Terrible experience. Read Less

Dr. Kellie Daly is AMAZING. If you can get an appointment to see her or you happen to see her by chance you will be nothing but pleased. She is very down to Earth, friendly, compassionate and knowledgeable. She is one of those vets that is not looking to get your life savings out of you....she will actually get down on the floor with your pet to do the exam and she will talk to you in ""real"" terms that you can understand. The receptionists at the front desk are always pleasant, helpful and knowledgeable. Certainly, the prices may be a bit higher than other local vets, but you must consider the care that you are getting from the highly skilled veterinarians and technicians there. Your pet is getting high-quality care and up-to-date diagnostics. I would rather pay a little more to get great care of my animals than go somewhere else to have my animal mis-diagnosed or given poor treatment. Read Less

Dr.Boyce was very professional, compassionate and friendly. Rebecca & Robert also were compassionate & friendly during a difficult time. We had to have 2 of my beloved cats euthanized on 5/14 and received the very best care. My kitties were treated with love & respect & our grief was also respected. They both went peacefully & their ashes will be placed at the pet cemetery in PA. My heart is broken, i miss both of them terribly. K.C. Was with me since he was 1 yrs old and he is now 17 and Ms Fluffy Angel Merlyn had been with me since Nov 1999 the week before Thanksgiving , the Angels brought her to me. She came 10 days after our dog Merlyn was euthanized for tumors. Fkuffy was the same coloring & gender as Merlyn so that is why she was named after her..I miss them both terribly but know they are at peace in Kittie heaven watching over us. Read Less

It's not that easy finding a vet that not only accepts ferrets but also knows a thing or two about them. The first time I went to this place was last year in August (2007) and it was through Petco because my ferret got a cold.The second time I went there was today and it was because my ferret had had trouble breathing. I was really nervous because not only did I not have a regular vet but this could have been a sign of something really bad... a "Red Flag Emergency." But then I remembered about the Plainfield Animal Hospital and my boyfriend and I drove down there right away. The place was beautiful and clean and the employees were exceptionally nice. The veterinarian saw our ferret very soon after we came and thankfully told us that our ferret was perfectly healthy and he might have gotten an excess of dust in his system and that it just had to pass. He also told us about a vaccine that our ferret needed and gave it to him that same visit.Overall, from that visit, we got some very good news, a wellness check, and a vaccine for sixty-six fifty ($66.50). I was very satisfied with the hospital and would recommend it to everyone; it's affordable, the service was great, the environment was clean and friendly, and everyone was nice. =) Read Less
