Unfortunately, we had a very negative experience here. Our puppy was very sick and very few people there seemed to care. We called multiple times throughout the day to request a call back from the neurologist, and then during our last request, found out she left for the day. So we had to bring our puppy in. The emergency doc was very nice, and filled us in that her lab work had resulted and she had a fatal disease. The neurologist left for the day without telling us that. We were told to take the puppy home, and the neurologist would call us first thing in the AM. The next day we called at 830 and then 1030 and then 1230 because we were told she had a fatal disease and may have to put her down. We made reception aware of this and aware that our dog was crying in pain. We were told the neurologist will not call back until night time. Considering they are a vet, they don’t seem to care about the animals. I am an ICU RN who has also worked short staffed during a pandemic, and I can’t imagine not calling my patients families back, the way that they were able to blatantly ignore us. I don’t usually leave negative reviews, but they seem to have gone out of their way to prove how little the dog meant to them so I would definitely be weary if you plan on taking your animal here. Horrible, unprofessional, not reliable, never come here. I confirmed the appointment the prior day, came here for my dog’s appointment, but they never put my confirmed appointment in their system. I waited for my appointment for a month, and now I am being sent back for no reason! They have 2 locations in New Jersey, we went to the other one, and they REFUSED to wait only 30 minutes for their ridiculous mistake. This is about the big tumor on my dog’s eye, and I’ve been waiting for one month. They didn’t even let me drive to the other location. At least say the location when confirming the appointment. No email services either, even the most basic vets know it. All patients beware. It was their very disgusting and unprofessional behavior and I would never ever come here again. Go to somewhere else. I would never trust to leave my pet with them. I wonder how could I possibly ever trust them to leave my dog, they can’t even set up their appointments. Read Less

Client made appointment at one of our hospitals with a surgeon and the appointment was confirmed by that hospital. Client has a copy of the confirming call which shows the number of the hospital with which she made the appointment. For some reason the client did not go to the hospital she called but instead a totally different location. When she arrived at the wrong hospital, it was explained to her what had happened and offered an appointment for either later the same day or the next morning with the surgeon at the hospital she had called. The client declined a new appointment.

They stole over $2000.00 from me, and poisioned my dog,  Avoid this place.Took my 4 year old labrador for knee surgery.Consultation $250.00 plus they prescribed him Remidol $80.00 and told me to return in 2 weeks for the surgery which they quoted at $5000.00.   I brought the dog back as directed after giving my dog the prescribed Remidol for 2 weeks.2 hours later tge Vet called me and said my dogs Liver enzymes were dangerously high and the surgery was cancelled.   He then says my dog may have Liver disease or injested a toxin such as anti freeze . I DONT KEEP ANTI FREEZE IN MY HOME.  The Vet suggests an MRI and quotes me $500.00 to do it.  I agree the and the MRI is negative.  I pick up my dog and tell the Ver that the only thing my dog injested in the past 2 weeks diffrent was the Remidol that he prescribed.  Immediatley the Vet gets defensive and denies any wrong doing.   As I leave the bill is $1500.00 , not the $500.00 quoted. How nice They just hit my credit card on file. I bring the dog to my regular Vet and he immediatly says Remidol POSIONED my dog, and stopped the Remidol .   My Vet treated my dog for over 3 Months before his Liver recovered . I requested a credit or refund from GSVS and have gotten no response. Total $2300.00 for absoulutly nothing.   Legal action pending. Took my dog to Northstar in Robbinsville NJ.  for his knee surgery without incident. Much better place. Read Less

Today i was sent to the garden state vet group in Tinton Falls , by my local vet for my baby girl ginger . Ginger had been diagnosed with cushions for about two years now . When bring her into this vet on an emergency basis because our local vet , could not accommodate her condition any more , He thought it was kidney stones at 1st . I don't really know at this point what was the real reason that her liver , kidney, and other organs were failing at this point some type of infection, tumor and or cancer at this point the vet was suggested . They gave us cost up front. We all know this is a business and these place aren't free . I agreed to pay the cost 2000 up just for ivs and testing . I was waiting to pay when I got the call from the vet and want to meet with me again . Ginger my baby had a seizure on the table and she felt ginger might not make after testing. After giving her a tube of glucose, because she have eating in day and or drank anything  her sugar was still reading zero. She want to make me aware of the issues at hand . It seemed beyond out of my control, the amount of suffering it seemed she going threw was unbearable . They gave me plenty and all the time with her before we put her down . This is the hardest thing a person must do ! Even know the vet said I made the right choice , you always second guess yourself, thinking what if I spent the 10k or more ect would she have the same type of life or not , just hard and harder to figure out . After she was put down I spent time with her to here her last breath of air, they also gave me a paw print which super nice . I chose to have her cremated by herself and now awaiting to bring my baby girl back home to rest for ever . I will miss you always my baby girl ! Read Less

Worst place ever. It's ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. I took my dog to this place , a guy that works there asked me few questions about my dog, then he checked my dog's eyes and teeth told me my dog was seriously dehydrated. He asked permission to give IV fluid and I said yes. He took my dog away. They told us to stay in a room, a lady(vet) came in the room and said my dog looks bad, his liver looks bad(they didn't do any test on him), I have to keep my dog at the place for 12 to 24 hours, then they going to do blood work on him, then get an another vet to check his internal organs, then ultrasound, biopsy. I asked her how much is it all together. She said $3000.00. Then she said it's not guranteed he is going to survive. I told her i want to take my dog home. she said put my dog to sleep right then and there. My dog was still walking , and active. I told her no. She brought my dog back and said THEY DID NOT GIVE HIM IV FLUIED. THEY LIED. THEY CHARGED ME ALMOST $570 'S. They knew they weren't going to make $3000's out of me, so told me to put my dog to sleep so they can make money. DON'T GO TO THIS PLACE. THEY ARE LIARS, IT'S ALL ABOUT MONEY. Myself and my family have been patients of GSVS for over 20 years spending over $40, 000 from surgery bills in addition to the countless specialists that we have seen over the years. Up until now we could not have been happier with the service and professionalism that we received from all departments we've dealt with. My cat has been a patient of Dr. Jonathan Goodwin(cardiologist) for many many years and has received exceptional care. 2 years ago we moved out of state but Dr. Goodwin still said to me to call or send him anything from other cardiologists and/or vets and he will look it over for me if I need him to, which he has done graciously, until this last set of photos that I requested he look at in conjunction with an echo cardiogram that my vet who is trained in cardiology but is not certified in cardiology, sent over recently.  He looked at the written report, called me and said all was well and that was it. I let him and  several staff members know that I was sending photos from the echocardiogram that were not included in the original report for him to view and my vet and I received confirmation that they were in the computer and on his desk for review. I received no response back from him after having the photos sent to him and calling the office and leaving two messages with the receptionists to have my calls returned from him last Thursday, Friday and Saturday when he was in the office. My current vet sees something on the echocardiogram that looks like a pocket of fluid and I wanted Dr. Goodwin's professional opinion on that because they want to give my 16 year old cat another echo next month to see if the fluid is still there and I didn't want my cat to go through that stress of another procedure if he didn't have to or the removal of fluid if in fact the vet sees some again next month.  I respected and valued Dr. Goodwin's opinion immensly and really wished I heard it on this crucial matter. After dealing with him for so many years I find this behavior totally unlike his character, shocking and unprofessional and apparently, by his actions, in my opinion, he does not care what happens to my cat. So sad about this. I really liked and respected him as a cardiologist. Read Less

I truly wish I could give GSVS 10 Stars!    My 13 year old Maltese, Joey suddenly became very ill.  An otherwise healthy dog and spry for his age.  After a few vet visits, my Vet referred to Garden State in Staten Island for a Sonogram.  To make a long story short, we found ourselves there at 9 pm and were faced with a need to explore a mass that presented upon x-ray.  GSVS SI suggested we get to GSVS in Tinton Falls before 7am the next morning to have him put on the patient list for the day for an evaluation.   Joey was seen by Internist, Dr. Alicia Hendersen.  She immediately suggested and endoscope and CAT Scan. She called me while she was doing the endoscope and we made a decision for her to try and get a biopsy sample through that procedure.Unfortunately, the samples we inconclusive.  She called me and explained all the different scenarios that we had.  I was never pressured or pushed into anything.  She gave me so much time and answered all my questions, with true concern for Joey.  I loved her!  On her advice of getting a surgical opinion I started researching his issue, surgeons, their training, their experience, etc. Anyone who knows me, is aware of how much research I do before I do anything.  Purchases, vacations, products and especially doctors and hospitals.  I spent 4 days looking for the right Surgeon. I kept coming back to Dr. Thomas Scavelli, the Founder of GSVS.  So I called and made an appointment with him. Dr Scavelli, is smart, compassionate and forthright.  He was very honest with me on all the probabilities and the fact that it would be a very tough surgery to remove this mass since it was on his esophagus. The prognosis was not good.  Our only hope was that is was very low, close to his stomach.  He reassured me that I would not be wrong to put him down, that I had done plenty to try and save Joey.  But he said it was our choice and offered me an option to go in, look and at that time if it was hopeless he would put Joey down in surgery.  He made sure we said our goodbyes and he was very emotional as we did.  A very kind man.  We left a mess and honestly I am not sure how I even drove back to SI through my tears.  Within two hours of being home, he called me from the OR to tell me that he was actually able to remove a golf size tumor from his esophagus.  This was incredible news!  We thought the call was going to go a completely different way.  Dr. Scavelli is amazing, he's a wonderful person and an incredible surgeon.  All my research was right, I picked the right man.  I want to also say, that every single person we encountered in GSVS could not have been kinder.  I would highly recommend using GSVS for any and all pet emergencies. We brought our dog there post lipoma surgery specifically for radiation treatment.  We mostly interacted with Dr. Cohen but the entire oncology staff were wonderful and caring professional Veterinarians.  The treatment was three weeks long - and as we live an hour north of the practice ( and Work an hour north of that) we had to leave our Sunny with them.  It was the hardest time but the staff called with updates every day and we got to visit her.  Now we sit back and pray the radiation worked and all will be well for our adorable dog.  My only feedback for them would be to prescribe antibiotics proactively for post radiation burn.  And to always ensure the patient get an E Collar. Part I: Consultation My Beagle put me through a scare two months ago. And while she received excellent, hospital care to treat her health then, we had to do a new search for another obstacle. I was frantic almost a month ago and as a result of her diabetes, our Beagle developed cataracts. I was a freaking mess and went to every website imaginable and noticed, she had all the signs. Gathered a list of at least 15 or so veterinary eye specialists in the Tri-State area and called each one of them. Cataract removal is expensive. Period. But most of the locations I contacted, were just outrageously out of our spectrum. Regardless of the negative reviews, Garden State Veterinary Specialists, was the winner! Middle of the week and past 9pm and spoke to Priscilla. I explained our dog's situation and was kind to give me pricing over the phone, (unlike most locations I contacted, who refused to provide dollar amounts over the phone) in fact, she was more than helpful- maybe a savior at that moment and penciled Fudge, for a Saturday consultation appointment. In terms of Cataract surgery, our dog would require post-op visits and medications-  all included in their pricing package. It was a smooth (nonetheless), two hour trek from home to Tinton Falls. We checked Fudge in and in a matter of 10-15 minutes in the waiting area, we soon sat with Dr. Kenneth Pierce who was thoroughly professional along with two of his staff who shut off the lights and conducted a series of eye exams. We were given all the information from pre-op drop off, to the surgery the day of and picking her up a day later- along with important surgery and post-op care information and then some. Honestly, there weren't any crickets in the room- there was ongoing dialogue between Dr. Pierce and Mr. Man- as I was a bigger mess controlling my tears of excitement and sadness as Fudge was scheduled, for an early July surgery date. Before leaving his office, Dr. Pierce provided our Beagle, with prescription eye drops to prevent any inflammation between the consultation and her surgery. Opting out of surgery would've meant having a blind dog- and I know most pet parents/owners go that route- but I wasn't ready for that. Mr. Man and I felt relieved even if it meant, traveling out of our way and finally sitting down with an ophthalmologist who heard us, examined our dog and broke down the information for us piece by piece for her surgery appointment-  while everyone was being extremely pleasant and skillful. Part II: Pre-Surgery We made a mad dash from White Plains to Tinton Falls and as directed, we checked Fudge in for her pre-op. Front desk was considerate as we arrived 20 minutes late. One of the nurses explained that our dog would have two more eye exams to fully determine if she'd still be a candidate for Cataract surgery or bring her home blind. And so the waiting began. After 2 and a half stressed out hours, we got the great news, that Fudge will have her surgery. Part III: Morning Day Of SurgeryWe received a prompt call from Dr. Pierce at 8:25am to give us a heads up and let us know she'd been responsive after her tests the day prior and that she was ready for her cataract surgery on both eyes. After 2 and a half hours, Dr. Pierce personally called us and gave us exciting news about surgery and that she was resting and doing well. At about 7:20pm, he personally called us again, to provide yet another post surgery update. At this point, I was thanking the Heavens, nonstop.Part IV: Post Surgery & Heading HomeOverall, service was comprehensive and stellar and I honestly didn't experience anything that was mentioned by those who trashed Garden State. Our initial visit coupled with surgery and post-surgery, was beyond words. Staff was qualified and amazing! My thing is this, if you're cordial from the get-go, the end result, will be nothing short of that. In retrospect, I wouldn't have changed a thing. From start to finish, Garden State made sure our visit, especially my Fudge's visit was stree-free. The long distance trip, was definitely worth it and we made the best of what Asbury Park has to offer during our stay!!! Read Less

They could not provide a diagnoses but more importantly we left not knowing what to do for her!  They did sent her infor to the radiologist to read who ultimately found something- BUT don't you think the neurologist should have found the same thing-YES!  I feel like they dropped the ball on my young golden!  5 weeks later her neck lymph nodes swelled up, they were aspirated and lymphoma was found. This place is atrocious. My home burned down and it was Arson, the man also burned down two other homes while my husband and I were away on our honeymoon and an hour from being back home. Our cat bearded dragon, and flower girl 2 year old puppy Cambria were trapped in the fire as our pet sitter had just stepped out 30 min before fire began. I finally received a call and was able to get my dog out on and rushed her to the hospital. I was told by the vets that her xrays showed that we got her out just in time and that she was cautiously optimistic but seemed she would be okay. I was not able to stay with her I would have had to stay outside in waiting room and had to go back to see the home and see if I could find my cat if he got out and find out what even happened with the fire. before I left Cambria was brought in and was breathing horse without the oxygen machine. I asked if this meant anything bad and the assistant told me she was going to be okay she was going to be fine. I left thinking my dog would be okay and wasnt informed if she was going to get sicker it could happen instantly. I was not fully explained anything at all really. I signed a form for an estimate and left for the night and told them to call me if anything happened. I left around 1 or 2 am. I called again in the middle of the night to check on her and they said there was no updates. At 7am as we were getting ready to get to the vet I received a call that Cambria was not doing well and my husband and I rushed there. We were told we had no other choice but to Euthanize her because she wasnt going to survive and her lungs were failing. I wasn't given much explanation, or compassion by the doctor who was just quite firm about my lack of time or opportunity to wait and decide instead she came in over and over again telling me Euthanasia was the only way and she was suffering too much. Suddenly it went from her xrays look okay and she should be okay to we made her unconscious before you got here and now you have to put her to sleep. I  was asked if I wanted to cremate her and as I nearly fainted and threw up from everything happening I agreed but didnt really understand my decision or anything that had to do with that either. I chose to put her to sleep under all of the pressure and left them with my card information for payment. They were well aware that my home burned down and I lost everything. And yet they chose to send the final bill months and months later to my burned home address stating I didn't pay the full amount and owed 500$. That five days later from that letter the amount would go to collections. I was not called even though my  number and my husbands number were given. I didnt receive the letter until April, 2 months later as it took that much time for the mail to get to the forwarding address and then to me.I called to find out what was going on and why I wasnt informed, why they didn't give me the final amount when Cambrias ashes were picked up, why they didn't send that letter sooner than february, all of these questions were met with  complete and utter apathy, attitude, and what seemed like the receptionist's disgust for my sadness and confusion. You all knew my home burned down and I lost everything while I was away on my honeymoon you all knew I would need my bill to be sent to an alternate address and you had my phone number, my husbands phone number, an in incase of emergency phone number, and an email address. You had ample opportunity to even inform me when her ashes were picked up. Instead you wait months and months to contact me and you send the letter to my burned down home. You also lie and say you sent two letters but I only received the one. Absolutely unrealIt wasnt hurtful enough for you to lead me to believe my dog would be okay just to basically push me into euthanasia just a few hours later. Its not bad enough that your doctor seemed to lack any feelings whatsoever and you forgot to tell me my total when I went to pick up the ashes. Its not bad enough that I couldnt be with her in the room when I brought her in even though in reality she only had a few hours left to her life. You had to go and charge me an extra 500 $, never tell me about it, send the bill to my burned down house, threaten me with collections, and then disrespect me over the phone. I actually heard the woman lightly chuckle while I explained this to her. Read Less

First, I was told my dog (puppy) needed emergency surgery and it'd be $7,000 or else he'd die. Real nice right? Then they didn't properly stitch my dog's stomache closed and when I called to tell them a half hour after returning home they said it was fine. I knew something was wrong so I brought him back. They told me my dog could be septic ( because he wasn't properly sutured and it got infected) and had the audacity to blame me for it. They put him on the back-burner and had to get my vet to call to get them to not let my puppy die! Best part they charged me again and no one returned my calls about reducing the bill. I brought my English mastiff in for an evaluation of her limping. She was still walking around my home and up and down our patio steps. I was told she needed an X-ray and then I was given the results that she had bone cancer. I was told I could come pick her up an hour after the X-ray and when I went to pick her up she now couldn't bear any weight on her problem leg. She was carried to my car and I was told that was NORMAL. By the time I got home she couldn't stand up at all on any legs. Fast forward 24 hours later she has been euthanized (at a very compassionate animal hospital, not here) due to the outcome being whatever injuries she sustained here would never allow her to walk again. We knew we only had a very short time left with her but we thought we had more than a day. I've tried to get an honest answer about what actually happened to her while we were gone but everyone has denied knowledge of her being dropped or slipped (mind you she was 150lb). I would also like to mention whenever I called throughout my concerns of her crying in pain I was treated as tho I was an inconvenience to the night staff. I am disgusted by the lack of ethical standards. If you respect your pet don't come here. Read Less

PLEASE...if you value your pet's life, go somewhere else. They may be "no problem" for a check-up or whatever routine thing you may need, but beyond that, they seem fairly incapable AND are very expensive to boot. We had taken our beloved cat to our regular vet (in Northern NJ) on a Saturday AM (he is always great). She was having trouble (all of a sudden) walking/using her hind legs. Our Vet said that we needed an MRI in order to diagnose, and that we also needed to start her on some BP medication (a separate issue). He had the front desk call around to see if there was anyplace we could get an MRI on a Saturday. Behold...GSVS had on-site MRI and could fit us in. We quickly gathered our kitty and belongings and headed south. The front desk was not kind, warm or even friendly. We filled out forms and waited... Finally they did the MRI. Then after waiting some more, the Doctor called us in to discuss the findings. It was one of two things and the Doctor was unable to be sure which from the MRI. The MRI was showing some weird little blob near a particular vertebrae in her spine...so she either had a tumor OR she had a ruptured disc. Prognosis BAD if tumor (as our girl was already 16 years old) OR prognosis good if we could segregate her from our other 2 cats and prohibit any running or jumping. The latter a difficult task but we decided we would give her one good shot for continued life, in he case that it might be simply a ruptured disc (which would heal in a couple/few weeks if we limited her movement). The Doctor (Erika Gibson) prescribed Dexamethasone 0.5mg tablets (a very powerful anti-inflammatory) to be given 2x a day. She did not ask much about our cat's health history. We told her that we had come directly from our vet's office (mind you, it is several hours later now...and our vet is closed...we were at GSVS a large chunk of the day, mostly spent waiting) and that our Vet was saying that our cat needed BP medicine. We asked if she could prescribe that as well. She said NO, because there are many and she didn't know which one he was planning on prescribing. So then we asked, "but could it potentially be a problem to give her the dexamethasone without the BP medication?" She hesitated and was sort of vague like well...I suppose it could, but probably not...kind of like, well, you never know I guess, anything could happen, but that's always the chance you take...but it should be fine.OK...well she was the doctor and seemed nice enough, so we had no option but to trust her. After all we had made it very clear that, it being a Saturday, and dinner time, we would be unable to get the BP medicine until Monday...She was fine with that. So it must be OK...right? That night, after setting up a "safe zone" for her in the spare bedroom, we gave her the first pill. On Sunday morning we gave her the second pill. By Sunday early evening, she was just lying there with a glazed over look, doing a "weird-breathing-thing." Late Sunday night (when I couldn't bare it anymore...trying to wait until the AM to get her to her regular Vet was not happening) we took her to our local Emergency Room.We walked out of the Emergency Room with another $1000 bill, an empty carrier and heavy hearts. She had to be euthanized. The pills killed her...it was too much for her little heart. I felt like an accessory to a crime for having administered them. We should have trusted our gut over their "Dcotor." So all together in 2 days I think we spent around $3500-$4000 to kill our cat. The GSVS estimate had originally been around $1000 I think (for am MRI)...and in the end they charged us $2000 (! in reading other reviews, I see this is a common practice over there). I was appalled at how overall, uncaring and unethical they seemed to be (and apparently incompetent). But they had us where they wanted us...Please don't make the same mistake we did. Read Less

This is the best experience I have ever had with a veterinary service. My yorkie had a medical emergency the day after Christmas. We were referred to this hospital by a vet that happened to be opened the day after Christmas. We called and were told to "bring him right in". The staff was the best ever. From the receptionists to the technicians to the doctors, we were treated with respect and understanding. They realized that I was trusting them with a member of my family and they showed such compassion and concern. My yorkie had to spend a couple of days there and I was updated with phone calls on his progress. Ten stars out of five stars is not even close to a just rating for this organization. I highly recommend them to anyone that has a pet with an urgent medical concern. No matter how far they are located from you, it is worth the trip. They are up front and honest about possible costs and treatments. I cannot say enough good things, I highly recommend to anyone!!! When I brought my yorkie in they were extremely busy, yet everyone on staff kept their cool and displayed genuine concern for each and every patient. As busy as they were, my wait time was surprisingly minimal. I can say so many more great things about my experience here!Read Less

I've brought my now four month old kitten to this facility twice now. Firstly, for a severe medical issue related to a car accident she had prior to adoption where her bladder slipped out of place and was exposed, and most recently over Christmas as she had been unable to defecate for nearly two days. The first visit was an expensive one, but no more than I would have expected given the nature of the visit. I had already spent nearly $2000 with my personal vet in less than a month and couldn't afford to spend another $3000 on surgery on my own. They ultimately referred me to financial help and offered me swift urgent care which she desperately needed. Three of the four doctors I worked with during that visit were incredible (with the exception just being a bit of a lack of bedside manor). My most recent was incredible--I rushed my cat to the vet at 6am Christmas morning and they worked with me to find a solution knowing how much I had spent in the last few weeks; they gave me the opportunity to help her immediate issue and save toward the diagnostic issues I hope to have to give her to prevent this issue going forward. This particular hospital is roughly 35 minutes from me and I would recommend it to those in need of emergency care. The only criticism I would additionally express would be for the front desk staff; they're hit or miss. Some of them are wonderful, but some of them seem to be desensitized to the fact you're often there during an emergency and experiencing both significant emotional and (likely soon to be) financial stress. For example, I was offered a payment plan but they seemed to have no record of it when I went up to pay. Also, as I mentioned they ultimately referred me for financial help, but had to go out of my way to ask for it after 20 minutes of trying to find my own financing through family and a care credit card I wasn't approved for in front of them (I would have expected they offer people the opportunity to apply in a circumstance like that). Again, I think it's just slight disorganization and desensitization to their environment.Read Less

A few years ago, I took my cat here because she reacted badly to her spay. She wound up in the ICU and I feel so so about this place. Yes, they did ultimately save her. There were some excellent staff members. But, the cost was exorbitant and if I was not in the medical profession myself, they would've milked me for another $4000 plus killed my cat in the process.  I had to get nasty with the Dr. who was trying to persuade me to let them poke around in my cat for an invasive surgery just to explore basically. There was no real need. I said, " absolutely not!" She said it again and again. Finally, I snapped on her. "WHY do you keep prodding me to get a $4000 UNNECESSARY exploratory surgery on my cat when she REACTED to anesthesia to begin with.!?" Um, she had no response but to finally back down. She could've KILLED my cat if I didn't know any better to say NO. I pray I don't need their services again. You might as well leave your own liver and kidneys behind to pay for them to save your pet. God willing, I'll never have to step foot in this facility ever again. In an emergency, I had to take my cat here about a month ago. They wanted to charge me $900 for an MRI, so I declined and left. Several weeks later, after a surgery that my cat had, I was forced to bring my cat back here due to the fact that they were the only place open that could help me. They informed me that the only chance of saving my cat's life would be a surgery that would cost $9,000, and that even that probably wouldn't work. Most unfortunately, we wound up putting our beautiful cat to sleep that day. They charged us $900 for the visit. We didn't have that kind of money to spend, and they put us on a payment plan. We got a call the next day (While we were extraordinarily distraught over the loss of our beloved pet) to inform us that they would not be sending our cat out to be cremated until we were paid in full. Essentially, they were holding our cat's corpse hostage until they got their money. Garden State Veterinary Specialists are evil, callous, money-grubbing thieves. On top of the heartbreak of losing our cat, they added insult to injury throughout the process. I would never in my life recommend that anybody entrust their beloved pet to this facility.Read Less

We had to rush our diabetic cat over to the GSV in Iselin this past Friday night due to him developing hypoglycemia which is a very serious condition if not taken care of quickly. It was the first time we'd ever been put in the position of needing emergency care for one of our cats. I can't give enough kudos to all the staff here for the professional and competent care they provided for both our cat and us. We were seen promptly, and conferred with the doctor on call as to the best treatment at that moment. We felt good about his prognosis when we left him overnight. Everyone communicated to us what to expect and the follow through was thorough as well. By the next morning our regular vet had all reports to read through and, they called to discuss via phone as well. I feel very lucky that we have such a good animal ER so close to home. Great coordination with our vet combined with rapid response with a smile at the time of the emergency. They even brought our cat out to us wrapped up in a nice warm towel to say goodbye to us the night he was brought in - a nice touch to help the animal feel safe and cared for. Once can't ask for more when you're stressed out and worried for the health of your pet, regardless of type. Good job by all! Thanks!Read Less

Thursday  evening our Maltese started having issues with eating and then loose stools that at 4 am turned bloody. By 8:15 and another bloody stool, I was going to just put her in the car and drive to Englishtown to our vet (who I love and have moved the dog to wherever he goes). Hubby said to call first-got the answer service. Explained the problem, Answer service calls and tells me to take her to GSVH.  Sat for about 45 minutes once we arrived. Once seen by the vet she advises I need to leave the dog for bloodwork, IV, possible ultrasound to figure out what is going on.  Told to wait while they work up an estimate. Estimate is $1200-1500. SHOCK. Leave $1125 deposit and sent home. I am told the bloodwork should be done by the time I get home and someone would call. I did not hear, so I called 2 hours later. Told there was a slight elevation on one test, so they were running another. Also told she would do the Ultrasound in the pm. Waited and finally called to be told the Ultrasound showed nothing. Asked if I could pick her up in the AM,(still on IV) and told I would be called at 9-9:30 am with an update. Called after 11 as no one called me. Told the vet would call me back. When I spoke to her, she said they wanted to keep her another night. She wasn't eating, tests were normal, she is re-hydrated, but still having bloody stools. Told her, if tests were negative, I could deal with the stool issues (I was told they could go on for a couple of days) and I can give her meds that she was Rxed (plus she is not used to being kept in a cage-and with no one she knows). I was asked NOT to come until late in the day. Arrived before 5 and waited until after 6 to see vet and get our girl back (who was frisky and impatient to leave). Meds Rxed stated dosage and how often, on the DC sheet-and totally different instructions and # of pills on the bottle. Brought this up when I was shown to a room to get the dog. The took all away and redid everything and had me resign the DC sheet. DC sheet also said I was taking our baby without their approval (that she should stay another night). Got home-dog pees,  bounces into house, goes to get a drink and over to her daddy to be picked up.  Made the chicken and rice diet they suggest for the next few days- She devoured the food both last night and this AM. I tend to agree, that this place is in it to make as much $$$ as they can.  I just got out of Jersey Shore myself (3 weeks ago) and let me tell you Hell will freeze over before I ever spend another night in a hospital. Now, I feel the same for my dog. If issues come up is day stay or nothing! Read Less

When you hear hoofbeats, think horses not zebras. Well, in our cat's case, it was a zebra prancing through Central Park. We brought our cat to this clinic from Staten Island for a blood transfusion based on the recommendation of our primary vet. He had to stay 48 hours for observation and a multitude of tests. His diagnosis is one of exclusion, and I'm very thankful the doctor treating him was so thorough. He went down the list of next steps with us and kept us in the loop the entire time. There is a wait time, but I have no problem with this. I don't want my pet's treatment and exams rushed, so I don't expect them to rush someone else's in order to speak to me. They do seem expensive, our bill was a tick over $3000, but when you look through the itemized list of charges, they're pretty reasonable. Intensive care and especially testing adds up quickly. It was a financial commitment we knew we were making when we took him in for treatment. He was given great care and attention. I highly recommend them and wouldn't hesitate to use their services again. Read Less

I have seen several doctors at this practice, for needs ranging from emergency care for a cat with a burned paw, to dermatology for a special needs dog, to a surgery consult for a limping (different) dog.The vets and the techs have all been very good to excellent, although I admit that the desk personnel lack the warmth that I hope for during a vet visit. Everywhere I go, people comment on my handsome, insanely friendly lab/pit mix with his giant head... except here. The desk staff don't even glance at him, and I have yet to encounter one receptionist at this practice that gives me the "warm and fuzzies". It is very busy, so maybe that is why they seem so brisk, but I expect a more friendly greeting when I come in, especially when I typically spend north of $500 per visit. (My last visit was $840.)Still worth it to me to see a specialist when I am in need. I especially like Dr Scavelli, who seems very competent and who takes the time to explain things to me regarding my dog's various issues. he's also a little conservative with his recommendations, which I appreciate. He isn't rushing my boy into extreme procedures. Dr Spiegel, a (young) dermatologist, is also very good. Prices seem in line with other specialty clinics I have visited in the past- pretty high, but expected. Read Less

I walked my thriving Newf into the hospital on June 29,2016. He was going to have a culture/biopsy for a rash we were treating. He stayed overnight. HE DIED 18 HOURS LATER.The morning of the biopsy I got a call that his blood work was normal. He had a slight rise in temperature and once it came down they would biopsy. Two hours later I got a call that his temperature was 105. They were very concerned and they moved him into critical care. I went to the hospital to find my boy dying. Two interns were overseeing his care. There was not a specialist to be seen and no specialist spoke with me. We stayed together for four hours. I watched him deteriorate. There was no reason given. The intern kept saying she didn't know what was happening. As I heard our boy's internist walk the hall, he NEVER spoke with me. I was told we could do an MRI and additional tests. I asked if it would change the outcome and they could not answer me. MY DOG WAS DYING IN THEIR CARE and they didn't have a clue. NO ONE READ THE CHART THOROUGHLY. NO ONE FOLLOWED THE INFORMATION IN THE CHART. The boy I walked into the hospital left us in less than 18 hours. I walked out with a cremation receipt. I got a call from a Vet who had NEVER seen or treated our boy with a justification call. He could not justify anything. WHY was an INTERN, who did not thoroughly read the chart treat my boy? WHY ask for specialized TESTS, if they are not read thoroughly? WHY keep a chart if it is not read? WHY did the SPECIALIST not communicate with me? WHY was a vet who NEVER treated our boy and NEVER read the chart calling me? WHY wasn't the internist making this call? NO ANSWERS! Eventually he terminated the call. One interesting point of information was offered. The vet told me he had an occasion to board his dog overnight at GSVH. When he returned the next day, his dog was dead. There was no explanation. NOT A RINGING ENDORSEMENT!I was given a $497 credit by the OWNER of the SPECIALIZED HOSPITAL. That was the value of my dead boy to him. MY BOY'S LIFE WAS PRICELESS to our family and as a pet therapy partner for those he served. My suggestion is to travel 45 minutes more to University of Pennsylvania if you need specialized care. We certainly did not receive SPECIALISTS care at GSVH. DEVASTATED! Read Less

I took multiple pets to Garden State over many years, and was one of their best clients so I was told (based on $ spent there I'm sure). I stopped going there due to the multiple pets that were misdiagnosed and killed there. I had one dog with metal bars in her back who was put in the MRI machine and killed. They blamed me but it is not the client's responsibility to know about their machinery - they SHOULD have processes in place to protect the animals (like reading the chart first, or asking the client to fill out a questionnaire. Lucky for them I am not a litigious person and didn't sue. Oncology was responsible for the death of my cat with lymphoma. She had two bleeds from the chemotherapy and just got done with a blood transfusion when the oncologist gave her another chemo round which killed her in hours from another massive bleed. In knowing more now, it would have been procedure to stop chemo. They do not have a radiologist which I didn't know. Even though they tout themselves as "specialists" - one of the most important specialties to have is a board certified radiologist. Unfortunately I didn't know that their young recently graduated vet was reading the radiographs. Despite my cat having history of stones she told me it was kidney failure and by the time I took him to University of Penn it was too late. They said he was misdiagnosed and had multiple stones and blockage and he could have had surgery and been saved. (Penn actually sent the stones to a specialist in midwest for analysis). UPenn also told me that Garden State also misdiagnosed two other cats. Garden State had wanted to do surgery on one's bial duct but UPenn said , no, she did not need that surgery that instead the cat had triaditis and was put on meds and she'd now doing great for last two years. Luckily I got another opinion from UPenn Vet (Matthew J. Ryan) and both cats are properly treated and healthy. After the last three issues with Garden State I stopped going there and use my vet and use Red Bank in an emergency (though their overnight team are inexperienced just like Garden States overnight team) and sometimes UPenn in an emergency though 1.5 hours from me. And, go to UPenn in Philadelphia for any specialty needs. I currently have a cat going to neurology and one to dermatology and surgery. Red Bank also has an excellent opthamologist that I have always gone to over Garden State eye doctor. Dr. Ringo is great. I've learned to trust my judgement and to get second opinions. Everyone makes mistakes, but when you have a consistent number of failings - you need to start looking elsewhere. To everyone reading - if your pet is not doing well at Garden State - take them to UPenn Veterinary (Matthew J Ryan) and tell them to ignore anything done or said at Garden State and to start from scratch. People should contact the Veterinary Medical Board though when they feel they have a legitimate claim against any vet and they have all their paperwork. As anyone reading from Garden State will know who I am, I am signing my name. D. Suzette Grimm Read Less

The other day my dog had some sort of neurological episode. My regular vet told me to call Garden State because they had a neurologist on staff seven days a week and they were not sure about Westfield. I called Garden State and the woman who answered was polite and friendly. She got me an appointment with the neurologist Dr. Gibson for later in the day. The place is easy to get to and right off of the Garden State Parkway (exit 102). It's a bit tricky to find, but listen to your GPS when it says you are there even if you don't see it. The waiting area was comfortable and clean enough. I overheard other clients talking about how their pets were in great hands at Garden State, which made me feel a lot better about being somewhere new. All of the ladies at the front desk were nice. Dr. Gibson took a health history of my dog and gave him a thorough examination. I have seen other neurologists give my dogs neurological exams and Dr. Gibson was even more thorough. She was well spoken and handled my dog with care. She explained everything without making me feel dumb. Dr. Gibson did not mind being asked questions and I never felt rushed or unimportant. She advised a blood pressure test and follow up with my regular vet to complete blood work. I feel this is important to say after reading some of the other reviews on here...the cost of the visit was very reasonable and less expensive than RBVH (Red Bank). They even included a complimentary service most other places would charge for. I found out for one test, this place is hundreds of dollars cheaper than the cost I was quoted at Red Bank. After my experience, I would absolutely recommend Dr. Gibson and Garden State.Read Less

i felt compelled to write this because other reviews about this vet were harsh and scary. i had an emergency and this was the only vet with a neurology appointment the same day. others wanted me to bring my pet in as an emergency service and the onsite neurologist would only consult--- which means they would charge me considerably more money. this vet gave me a direct appointment with a neurologist no extra fee. the place is clean, the staff is friendly and extremely helpful and compassionate. the dr was knowledgeable, professional, and took the time to answer all of my questions. the same dr performed the mri and the surgery which means that she was with my dog every step of the way. she checked up on him numerous times daily and she was the one who called me each time as well instead of having a staff member do it. my dog had an mri on site that day and surgery immediately after so he didn't need to be knocked out twice. i was called after the mri, and post surgery with updates. i was then called twice a day with updates during my dog's stay for recovery. they have visiting hours from 4-8 with your pet!!!!! you can bring treats and toys etc. they have the option for an onsite application and approval for a credit card if necessary for you to pay your bill. The prices were considerably lower than others suggested online for the same services and surgery which was a relief. they even kept my dog a few days beyond his release date for free until i could get someone to help me lift him in and out of the car and crate when we got home. a truly wonderful experience, and i couldn't have asked for a better dr. do not hesitate to bring your pet in for help.Read Less

Over the last 10 years we have used them for 3 different dogs. They were great each time. The first time we went there for surgery with referral from our Vet that our dog had hip dysplasia, vet had showed us xrays that looked to us like a ball half out of socket. GSVS vet said she might get it as she is a Lab/mix prone to hip dysplasia, but after the exam in front of us he said that's all well and good but its her knee that is hurting her. Gave us 2 options of knee surgery, $ or $$$. We chose $. After healing her knee was as good as new till she died. Our other 2 dogs had similar great experiences with their problems, each time saving their lives. we can't say enough good things about them. Read Less

On June 7, 2015 my dog, Miss Ruby Olmstead, had routine knee replacement surgery, due to complications Ruby had a second surgery on the same knee on July 10, 2015. Ruby was discharged and was not doing too good so I took her back to Garden State.  According to Garden State (during one of these surgeries) Ruby contracted MRSA in the O.R. I was assured by Garden State that it is common for a pet to catch an infection in an O.R. I was also told that Ruby gave herself the MSRA by bacteria on her skin.....to which I said "before the surgery her skin was supposed to be thoroughly washed then sterilized, was it? If this procedure was done properly there should have been no germs on her skin to produce MRSA" I am furious because due to the MRSA on August 31, 2015 Ruby's leg had to be amputated. Read Less

Our dog, Maverick, got into a bottle of alcohol as we food shopped Sunday morning. Thanks to an extremely alert roommate, she noticed something was not right in our absence and she brought him straight to the Westfield Animal Hospital. When we finally got there, we were told that Maverick could not stand, see, nor interact. We were told he was neurologically damaged and we were advised to euthanize him. I don't know how I even pulled it together enough to think straight but I got right on the phone with this intensive care animal hospital all the way in Tinton Fall (turned out to be Garden State Veterinary Specialists). I called them and told them about Maverick - how we had no idea how much alcohol he actually ingested but his prognosis from this Westfield vet was dire. They told me to bring him in as quickly as possible. What should've been an hour's drive took us 25 minutes as I drove down the parkway and my fiance, Cory, cradled our baby in a blanket. Maverick's breathing was so shallow - the drive was excruciating. I prayed out loud the entire time - I prayed to God, I prayed to my Aunt Corinne who was such an animal lover. I would've prayed to Harry Potter if I thought it would've helped his plight. This is a long story so there's no "making it short" but suffice it to say that after hours of waiting on results from blood tests and neurology tests and organ tests, we received the call that we prayed for. Maverick will make a full recovery. We were told to put him down on Sunday morning, and the doctors at Garden State Veterinary Specialists somehow brought him back to life. We are beyond...there are no words, we are the happiest two people on the planet now that we can breathe and know Maverick is going to continue barking like a maniac, chasing squirrels and trying to eat Yoda's (our other baby) feet. We are also extremely angry at the advice we were given by Westfield animal hospital. At the end of the day, we have our baby...but advising someone to euthanize their baby when there are very clearly other routes to go is appalling and completely unacceptable. We will forever be in debt to Dr. Merola and her entire staff at Garden State Veterinary Specialists.. From the receptionists down to the doctors, everyone was so sensitive and caring about our situation.  They made us really feel like they cared about saving our baby as much we did...I used up all my chips and sold my soul for their care and I would do it again in a heartbeat.P.S. the users posting here about the amount of money and being ripped off - I can't speak to that because we were told we would be looking at paying $2,000.00 and that had the great potential of going up, depending on whatever Maverick needed.  We would have paid anything - so it didn't matter.  But when I picked Maverick up yesterday morning, the receptionist told me that my fiance had to call them for a balance.  I said no problem, I will pay that balance right now.  She told me, no - we owe him $579.00 - Maverick's treatments didn't accrue the amount you originally paid.  They could have easily just kept that money, but they didn't. This place is a joke.Earlier this week my credit card got compromised I have money in the bank but no new card for another week. With checks and 80 bucks in hand I went to this vet because my pitbull ripped her leg open on a pipe and was totally skinned from her hip to knee. I got turned away from red bank vet because I couldn't come up with 500 cash and they too wouldn't take a check so I went to garden state vet hoping they would have a heart.Garden state quoted me anywhere from 1000 to 3000 but insisted their surgeons took a look that the wound couldn't just be stitched and it needed drains and major surgery. When they found out I couldn't come up with at least 1000 bucks and got denied care credit they said they would wrap my dogs leg give her pain meds and wish me the best. Before they took my dog out of the back room they said by the way today we are only going to charge you $80. So basically my dog was held until I paid the last 80 bucks I had. For them to turn away my dog in the condition she was in was just insane. I could see her muscles and bones and she was clearly in distress and they turned her away and recommended some free places to go to the next day. But with a wound like my dog had time was of the essence. Its not the veterinarian or the techs fault but whoever the owner is only cares about the almighty dollar not the life of animals. I understand its a business but the condition my dog was in was major. We weren't talking about a shot of checkup we were talking about her life. I am utterly disgusted with the way this was handled the other night.Im sure red bank called and told them at one point I let a bill get behind but this shouldn't dictate the life of an innocent animal.I wish I could post a picture of the wound you turned away you sick Fuck. I had a friend come through with cash and I went back to redbank where she got 40 stitches and treatment without drains for 500bucks.So clearly this place likes to make problems much bigger than they are to charge more money.Whoever owns this place is a pathetic money hungry pig. I highly recommend Red Bank Veterinary Hospital if you are ever in a tight bind like I was in. (Even though they turned me away at first) Otherwise you'll spend more than necessary. I will be talking to my lawyer about this. Read Less

If your pet is sick or injured, You just can't get any better than Garden State Vet. The DVM's are highly educated from an impressive selection of Universities. They're so knowledgeable that the moment you get there you feel better because you know your precious pet is in their more than capable hands. The first time we came, we drove about an hour with our new puppy continually yelping (not Yelping, yelping) and crying in pain. Murphy was about 3 months old and his regular vet referred us after doing X-rays, blood work and physical exam. We just didn't know what was going on and Murph was visibly fading. It was scary to say the least. Soon as we got there they took Murph out of my arms and he went in to see the Vet. It was our first time there and we had forms to fill out, but they didn't make us wait. He went right from the car to the examination room. I was impressed with that but it also heightened my nervousness since Id never had a Vet do that before and it made me think we might lose our pup. Thanks to the expert care of the doctors at GSV, Murphy is fine. Back to his care. The Vet suggested he spend the night on IV fluids and monitoring. By that time he had stopping yelping (not Yelping) but he wasn't himself. My wife and I made the trip home worried but assured if Murphy had to be somewhere other than home he was in the best possible place. We got home and couldn't sleep. I called about 4 am to see how he was doing. The staff were reassuring and his Dr came on the phone to tell me Murph was much brighter, tail up and his neuro tests were all normal before he finally curled up and went to sleep. At least one of us could sleep! Murphy came home the next evening after work and he was bouncing and happy. When we left the Tinton Falls facility, we were told that a brand new GSV office was soon to open in Edison so if we needed them they would be lots closer to home for us. We hoped we wouldn't need them, but puppies are puppies. About a year later we found ourselves at the Edison office. If you're still reading this, I salute you! I have a bit more praise for GSV, tho so you can either read on or perhaps wait for the movie. I'll be brief. Murphy ate a corn cob from the garbage can and I had read that corn cobs can wreak havoc in a dogs digestive system. After three checks of the garbage can, we confirmed the remnants of whatever Murphy had eaten were indeed a corn cob. We called and went right in. X-rays showed his little gut was stuffed with the cob! Ugh. Not good because if he doesn't throw it up we are looking at surgery. The DVM assured us to take one step at a time and we spent anther sleepless night making sure Murphy didn't choke on the cob as he continued to burp and spit up pieces. We called and they told us it was good that he was throwing it up and that we should just watch him in case he started choking. He had a normal BM the next morning which was a great sign. Then we went back for follow up X-rays and he was fine. These pups can really put a scare into us; and now we put corn cobs in a separate bag and take them directly outside to the trash can. I think it's important to mention that after our visit to the Edison facility, I received a call from the owner of the practice who was so genuinely interested in my feedback that it made me feel very good. I had nothing but praise for both facilities and he was happy to hear it. We were there again just last month but I've written enough. Suffice it to say that we have a dog who eats things he shouldn't eat. I cannot recommend Garden State Vet highly enough. There doesn't seem to be a listing for the Edison facility but if you have an emergency they are right on 27, in Edison. Five stars doesn't seem adequate in this case. Thank you for being there for our pets 24/7. It's good to know you're out there, but we hope we don't see you again for a while! Here's to healthy pets and to the dedicated professionals who keep them that way. Read Less

I noticed something wrong with my 2.5 year old dog, so I brought her to my primary vet. He thought something was neurologically wrong with her, so he scheduled an emergency appointment with the neurologist, Dr. Gibson, on staff at Garden State Veterinary in Tinton Falls. I saw the neurologist and she was totally not interested in helping my dog. She acted like there was nothing wrong, except that my dog was blind, and didn’t look like she even wanted to exam her. She made me get expensive blood work, which my vet later said was probably not necessary and took urine from my dog, but never performed a urinalysis. She said there was nothing wrong neurologically and that I shouldn’t be concerned unless my dog looked demented. She said, “When I’m looking at her, all I see is a blind dog trying to navigate.” She told me to go to the ophthalmologist, but she still wanted to give my dog an MRI, spinal tap, and possibly brain surgery, if needed. My dog was just over 2 pounds. They had trouble just drawing blood from her (and complained that she squirmed too much), so it would have been nearly impossible to have even the MRI. Two days later, I saw the ophthalmologist and he was certain it was neurological and even diagnosed her. He said the neurologist wrote in her report that it was likely neurological, so why did she send me to the ophthalmologist? To get more money? I didn’t misunderstand because my mother was with me and heard the same thing. After my dog got progressively and rapidly worse and after discussing with my primary vet, I had to put my dog down. All I wanted was the blood work before I put her to sleep. The results were supposed to come the latest by Monday. Tuesday I had an 11 am appt to put her to sleep. I called numerous times to get the results, which did come in but they wouldn’t read them to me. I told them I was going to have to put her down in a couple hours and please, could they give me the results. Finally, I asked them to fax a copy to my vet asap and she said “well then I’ll have to get off the phone with you to do that” with attitude. At 11 am, I went to my vet, he gave me the results, and I put her to sleep. He comforted me and told me it was the right decision and after having so much trouble putting a needle in her vein, said that any MRI or brain surgery would be extremely high risk, something Dr. Gibson never said. At 6 pm, after she was put down 7 hours prior, the ophthalmologist (not the neurologist) called with her blood work. This all happened within a 3 day span. I’m very disappointed and would never recommend the neurologist, Dr. Gibson. She had no sympathy, no compassion, and still has not called to follow up. Please find somewhere else to bring your precious animal. Read Less

i brought my dog in after he swalled a piece of plastic. I gave the vet $2000. to try and help my dog. after a week they called and said to pick her up and 15 minutes later they called back as i was on my way and said the dog had died. My dog was my liek my children, my wife and i dont have children so we had a special attachment to our dog. Later a bill came in the mail for 1600. we refused to pay out of principle because we felt they did a bad job in caring for our pet. they later took us to court and since have added on $1700 in late fees and interest. Recently we tried to refinance our home but there was a judgement against us and were forced to pay this outragous bill. We contacted the collection agency to see if they would accept a payment of $2000 which would cover the original debt and their legal fees and explained that the reason we did not pay was because of the way our pet was mishandled and we felt they could have done more to save our 7 year old golden retriever. They refused and made us pay the entire $3300. After talking the several people we have found that is has happened to others who trusted Garden state vet with their loved ones. If anyone reads this looking for a place to take their sick animals, stay as far away as possible. They showed us no compassion to our situation and cant be trusted. if anyone else has had a similar experience with this vet please post and i will contact you to get the story. Maybe we can unite and cause them some heart ache like they caused us. Read Less

Read Less

Reviewing a specialist vet is difficult as, often, the news you get is not good and it's a very emotional visit. Unfortunately that was the case for us. That being said the staff and doctors were upfront about the likelihood of different diagnosis, straightforward about what tests they could do, and honest about treatment possibilities. The end diagnosis for our cat was sadly far from what we wanted, but the staff at Garden State Veterinary Specialists did everything possible to prepare us and inform us about options so we could choose how to proceed.

Read Less
