Part I: Consultation My Beagle put me through a scare two months ago. And while she received excellent, hospital care to treat her health then, we had to do a new search for another obstacle. I was frantic almost a month ago and as a result of her diabetes, our Beagle developed cataracts. I was a freaking mess and went to every website imaginable and noticed, she had all the signs. Gathered a list of at least 15 or so veterinary eye specialists in the Tri-State area and called each one of them. Cataract removal is expensive. Period. But most of the locations I contacted, were just outrageously out of our spectrum. Regardless of the negative reviews, Garden State Veterinary Specialists, was the winner! Middle of the week and past 9pm and spoke to Priscilla. I explained our dog's situation and was kind to give me pricing over the phone, (unlike most locations I contacted, who refused to provide dollar amounts over the phone) in fact, she was more than helpful- maybe a savior at that moment and penciled Fudge, for a Saturday consultation appointment. In terms of Cataract surgery, our dog would require post-op visits and medications- all included in their pricing package. It was a smooth (nonetheless), two hour trek from home to Tinton Falls. We checked Fudge in and in a matter of 10-15 minutes in the waiting area, we soon sat with Dr. Kenneth Pierce who was thoroughly professional along with two of his staff who shut off the lights and conducted a series of eye exams. We were given all the information from pre-op drop off, to the surgery the day of and picking her up a day later- along with important surgery and post-op care information and then some. Honestly, there weren't any crickets in the room- there was ongoing dialogue between Dr. Pierce and Mr. Man- as I was a bigger mess controlling my tears of excitement and sadness as Fudge was scheduled, for an early July surgery date. Before leaving his office, Dr. Pierce provided our Beagle, with prescription eye drops to prevent any inflammation between the consultation and her surgery. Opting out of surgery would've meant having a blind dog- and I know most pet parents/owners go that route- but I wasn't ready for that. Mr. Man and I felt relieved even if it meant, traveling out of our way and finally sitting down with an ophthalmologist who heard us, examined our dog and broke down the information for us piece by piece for her surgery appointment- while everyone was being extremely pleasant and skillful. Part II: Pre-Surgery We made a mad dash from White Plains to Tinton Falls and as directed, we checked Fudge in for her pre-op. Front desk was considerate as we arrived 20 minutes late. One of the nurses explained that our dog would have two more eye exams to fully determine if she'd still be a candidate for Cataract surgery or bring her home blind. And so the waiting began. After 2 and a half stressed out hours, we got the great news, that Fudge will have her surgery. Part III: Morning Day Of SurgeryWe received a prompt call from Dr. Pierce at 8:25am to give us a heads up and let us know she'd been responsive after her tests the day prior and that she was ready for her cataract surgery on both eyes. After 2 and a half hours, Dr. Pierce personally called us and gave us exciting news about surgery and that she was resting and doing well. At about 7:20pm, he personally called us again, to provide yet another post surgery update. At this point, I was thanking the Heavens, nonstop.Part IV: Post Surgery & Heading HomeOverall, service was comprehensive and stellar and I honestly didn't experience anything that was mentioned by those who trashed Garden State. Our initial visit coupled with surgery and post-surgery, was beyond words. Staff was qualified and amazing! My thing is this, if you're cordial from the get-go, the end result, will be nothing short of that. In retrospect, I wouldn't have changed a thing. From start to finish, Garden State made sure our visit, especially my Fudge's visit was stree-free. The long distance trip, was definitely worth it and we made the best of what Asbury Park has to offer during our stay!!! Read Less
