I had to get my dog, Rocco, into see the vet. He had developed an ear infection in spite of my best efforts to keep his ears cleaned. Dr. Powers and everyone else there was just terrific. The big guy wouldn't let the Dr. thoroughly examine his ears, and she wasn't able to see all the way down to the eardrum, because he wouldn't hold still for it. We discussed the options and the possible risks, (Rocco is getting up there) and decided to dope him up so that we could make sure no foreign objects had become lodged in his ear canal. Luckily, it has turned out to be a simple infection. Everyone in the office was very kind and helpful and once again, Rocco and I are very glad that we are seeing the good folks at Sunrise. I started going there while I was staying in Rio Rancho, but knowing what good care my dog gets at Sunshine definitely makes the drive from Barelas worth it. I can't recommend them highly enough. This place used to be my go to with my dog ever since he was a puppy. I’m not one to totally blast a place with a bad review but I’ll voice my opinion. Taking your dog to a place like this is emotionally stressful for him. As for Abernathy I’m not sure if he was having a bad day or his ego got too high but for him to say we need to have better control of our dog, When he’s the one that was allowing another dog to come out the room but it’s our fault? I’m glad i don’t have to deal with him. He may be good with dogs but his people skills are pretty trashy. Usually we have a good visit but i might considering going elsewhere. The person that looked at my dog was supposed to give us instructions on what we need to give my dog which she did but nothing about how much to give him. Nobody wants to find out that their sweet little pocket dog needs to go under the knife for a $1200 procedure, but we couldn't leave her be as a tripod with a busted back leg. When Radar Love turned up with a torn ligament that could only be repaired with surgery, our regular vet immediately referred us to Dr. Abernathy. The expert team of vet techs worked quickly to put us on the emergency schedule for Friday evening (with $100 up charge), and treated us kindly and professionally during every interaction. The clinic was very busy, but was kept neat and clean for a relatively comfortable sit in the spacious waiting room. They encouraged us to visit with our sweet pup at anytime over the weekend during her recovery to ease our angst about the overnight stay, which we did after she came out of anesthesia on Saturday morning. We met with Dr. Abernathy on Sunday morning when we anxiously came to take our tiny mended terrier home, and he took all the time in the world to answer our questions about the surgery and get to know more about our little furry family. Although the good doc doesn't seem to sit still very long and runs a tight practice, he was genuinely concerned for the well-being of both his patients and their people. After several bad experiences with nonchalant vets and money-hungry clinics, we were very pleased to have the opportunity to work with the well-respected Dr. Abernathy and his established team at Sunrise Veterinary Clinic. I wouldn't rate anything for this Veterinary Clinic but it was the only way to send a review. 3 days ago my husband and I brought our 14 yr old dog to there office and signed in as a Walk in, which is one of the ways requested to sign in. There wasn't a sole in the waiting room then the guy named Kevin behind the desk asked me what we needed to have our dog seen for, so I explained that our dog lost the use of his back legs, and has been also suffering his enlarged hearse, bad kidneys and several other issues so we'd like to have him not suffer anymore and put to sleep. Well, that guy told me that there were booked with appointments. So I said can't we just be seen by the Doctor, so Kevin went to go talk to Dr Abernathy and came back and told usI could either leave our dog there and Dr Abernathy would look at him when he gets time or we could make a appointment for much later in the evening. We were really disappointed that the guy behind the counter seem heartless and so is Dr Abernathy. We left the office very upset to find a much better caring vet, and now our dog is resting in peace. It's a shame that Sunrise Veterinary Clinic has really gone down hill after all these years and my dying dog had to feel rejected. Read Less

I have taken my pets to Sunrise Veterinary Clinic for close to 20 years now. I wouldn't trust the care of my pets to anyone else. Dr. George Abernathy and his team of veterinarians, technicians and administrative staff are the best you can possibly have when it comes to taking care of your animals. They truly love animals there, which makes a huge difference in how my pets respond to them. I even board my dogs there when I'm out of town because I trust the staff there to take the best care of them so I don't have to worry. There are not enough stars here for Dr. Abernathy. I've known him personally for years, his wife, kids and all their critters. He is the most dedicated person I have ever met. He spends every single day and night working to help tens of thousands of people and their pets. And while he is working around the clock you terrible ignorant people are slandering him on this review page. I would be ashamed if my 15 year old daughter posted words like that online. That is not under any circumstance the way to handle any situation and that is just poor parenting. George is a wonderful, successful man that does everything and anything he can to help the people in his life. And has the most successful vet clinic in this city. It's obvious when you drive by all the other empty parking lots of other clinics and people are parking down the street because the parking lot is full at sunrise. We keep returning to Sunrise Veterinary Clinic because of their dedication and concern for the four legged members of our family. You may have a wait, even with an appointment, but as soon as your pets are seen, you understand why. There is friendly, unhurried interaction with the staff, your vet will answer all your questions and will research anything you ask that could possible stump them. Premium care for your beloved pet is their primary concern, and they do it without premium prices. You might think you are only going in for vaccinations, but your pet will also receive a thorough exam, since maintaining your pet's peak health is the goal at Sunrise Veterinary Clinic. When a pet has reached the end of their health & pain free days, and it is necessary to make that agonizing decision for them, the vets at Sunrise are very caring and sensitive in helping ease them out of their pain. I've been taking my furry family members there for more than 20 years, occasionally I went somewhere else, and dissatisfied with the care at those places, I came back to Sunrise, I have no intention of going anywhere else while Sunrise is there for us. We have taken 5 dogs and 4 cats for care at Sunrise Vet Clinic over 5 years. They have had everything from serious surgeries to minor visits for shots. Every veterinarian we have worked with is thorough, kind, patient and very knowledgeable. Dr. Abernathy is superb with his surgery skills. The staff is efficient and helpful. Facilities are clean. Dr Abernathy has been taking care of not only my pets but my parents pets and grandparents pets as well. He has taken all of our pets from birth to death in the most kind and gentle way. He is always up front, honest and caring. He goes the extra mile every time. I know that I can trust him with the health and well being of my animals no matter the situation. The staff is friendly. Since 1998 I have taken all my dogs to Sunrise Vet. Clinic. We have always experienced the best care and service. Not once were we ever let down. Sunrise is a full service Veterinary Clinic with lab, x-ray and surgery facilities. Over the years my dogs have needed all these services. And they're provided at a fair cost. When my dog is sick or needs its annual shots, I want to go to the best place possible for them. This is the place. My mind is always at ease knowing Dr. Abernathy is at the helm. His Clinic provides a great service to this community. The office staff is top notch even though they are busy. Always they stop what they're doing to listen to you and take care of any concerns that you have. They get it right. The Tech Vets are top notch. My dog was diagnosed with diabetes one and half years ago by Dr. Stewart. Any pet owner that has experienced this knows how this hurts you for your pet. The emotional and the financial end are huge concerns and then the long term commitment. My dog is family to me and there was no choice for me but to care for her. Dr. Stewart was and has been kind and patient with me as I had trouble giving shots (I am very afraid of needles personally). As with another pet owner, our pets are members of our family. Children. We called for an appointment for our Pom after the groomer told us besides excessive shedding, she appeared to have a skin condition. The first available appointment was more than two weeks out. Two weeks, with a problem--not for shots, not for a wellness checkup. If this was your 2-legged child, would you wait two weeks if he or she had strep? An ear infection? Why should we wait just because the child is a pet and not a human?? We ended up dropping her off for a vet tech check, because that was the soonest way we could get her in. Dr. Stuart is wonderful. He told me the plan of action after a brief exam when I dropped her off, he told me I'd hear from someone within a couple hours. Then it went down hill. After no word for four hours I called. First 10 minutes all I got was a busy signal. Once the call went through, I was told I was the next caller in line, did I mind holding. Half a hour still on hold, I called from my cell phone while still on hold from my office line. Ended up getting assistance on my cell phone before my office phone, and the office call had been connected more than 40 minutes longer. And all of that to be told there was no news yet, they'd call me by 2pm. No call at 2pm, and I went through the same busy signal/excessive hold time process as before, but this time it was even longer. After finally speaking to Dr. Stuart about my dog, I shared my frustrations with him. He said this is a common complaint and unfortunately Dr. Abernathy is the only one with the ability to make changes--seems the new phone system Dr. Abernathy had installed a few months ago is worse than the system that it replaced. When I requested copies of all records for our pets, the front clerk asked me if we're moving. I replied no, after the inability to get ahold of anyone when you had my dog we are changing vets. The charge for today's visit was just over $200--which seems expensive even considering blood work and lab tests, I know it's much more than we paid Canyon Crossroads. Too bad they're two hours away from where we live now or we'd still be there. I do believe the level of care from Dr. Stuart was better than good, but the level of frustration trying to get information makes Sunrise not the vet for loving pet families like ours. Read Less

George and Staff are great docs. HOWEVER, it is virtually impossible to reach the OFFICE STAFF via telephone to schedule an appointment! I called this morning at 8:10 a.m. and it is now nearly 9:00 a.m. and I am still on HOLD! I was told there was ONE CALL ahead of me........ I called on my cell phone and was told "ONE CALL AHEAD"..... so my other phone line should be NEXT, right? WRONG! They answered my cell phone call FIRST and then the 50 MINUTE ON HOLD CALL. It is ridiculous! Come on George...... enough with restoring cars! Spend some $$$$ and have a dedicated person MAKE APPOINTMENTS! This is now officially RIDICULOUS! Fifteen YEARS and I am about to move elsewhere; it only gets WORSE every time I call! Now my puppy cannot be seen until FRIDAY! Hell! She will be crippled by then and all I will get is "take her to the SURGEON IN ALBUQUERQUE"! I am officially DONE! I am going to CORONADO VETS on 528 in / near BERNALILLO! I can't stand these "...there is one call ahead of you".... and then 35 MINUTES LATER I am still on goddamned HOLD! This is RIDICULOUS and a VERY GOOD REASON to walk away from GEORGE and STAFF! If they cannot ANSWER A PHONE CALL WITHIN 35 MINUTES I can only imagine how LOUSY they are in real freaking life! BYE GEORGE......... I CAN'T DO THIS ANY LONGER! SORRY! Read Less

Dr. Abernathy has been our Vet for over 15yrs since we first moved to Rio Rancho. We have watched his business, staff and Doctors grow over the years. We have always trusted Dr. Abernathy with our pets as he gives them such good care and attention. He puts in a lot of after hours for those pets left over night and I bet he has a very supportive family. Thank you Abernathy family for sharing him! But since he has grown in popularity, you have to book way in advance to get to see him. So we have become comfortable with bringing our pets to see Dr. Welch on staff. She too is very caring toward our pets. Dr. Steward has also performed some of the surgeries on our pets when Dr. Abernathy has not been available and he is also very good with the procedures. Just this week we had to bring our 1.5yr old retriever in because she ate something not digestible. We got in to see Dr. Welch immediately in the morning and by that afternoon Dr. Steward was operating on her to remove the foreign bodies. They were both very caring and professional. As for the rest of the staff, I know it is frustrating sometimes to get thru to the office. Sometimes I can dial multiple times and get a busy signal or be placed on hold for 15 minutes because there are two callers ahead but when I finally get my turn they have been helpful on the phone. I think they need more phone lines available and maybe need a full time operator to handle the load of inbound calls and be able to transfer the calls to available staff because you shouldn't have to wait 15-20 minutes to just make an appointment. With our recent emergency, we had dealings with I think Karen at the front desk and she was very helpful and attentive when getting our paperwork and medications all set so we could take our dog home. Dr. Abernathy has been our vet for 15+ years. I trust him with our dogs implicitly. He is caring, calming, sympathetic & knowledgeable. I wouldn't take my dogs anywhere else. he is by far, the BEST veterinarian we have ever had for our dogs. He has been by our side when we have to make the difficult decision to euthanize one of our beloved pets and he has been there when we have brought in a new rescue! We love him and the staff at SVC!
