I showed up at Thal Equine with a colicking horse on a Sunday at about 4:30 p.m. Despite what I consider to be a complete inconvenience, Dr. Thal met me in the parking lot, immediately commenced diagnostic procedures, roused his staff and treated the horse. Costco (yes, that is the horse's barn name) ended up requiring two surgeries within a 24 hour period, and, in my opinion, his condition was pretty much touch and go for about a week and a half. He was monitored 24/7 and I truly believe that if it were not for Dr. ThaI's surgical skills and the incredible followup care, Costco would not have made it. Both my regular vet and I were kept completely up to date with multiple texts per day. Now that Costco has been released back to my care, custody and control, Dr. Thal has continued to check in with me to see how the horse is doing. I do not have words to describe just how wonderful Dr. Thal, Kristin and the staff are. Not only are Dr. Thal's technical skills amazing, the caring and empathy by everyone there is absolutely wonderful.

Just about a year ago, a good friend gave me my horse of a life time, a ten year old Lusitano named Capaz. His move to me involved many life style changes for Capaz who had previously had a very attentive, safe life, but it was very solitary and in a stall. A big part of what my friend wanted for him was to have pasture time and herd mates. And that was his new life with me....and he loved it.
But there was something going on that was a problem for his system and he coliced twice in six months, both times with good sized impactions. The first time I was able to get him to a good facility three hours from my home where they resolved the impaction in a day and we made our way home and went back to life as usual. In May, we made the trip to northern New Mexico to participate in a trail clinic that I do each year with one of my horses. This was Capaz's turn as my new boy and I was sure it would be great for us both. He had been to this facility twice before for other events and had settled in well and was content and happy there. This time though, on the third day, he was obviously in distress, so I started to search for a vet. It was, of course, a Sunday. No vets were available to come to the ranch and the ranch manager connected me with Dr. Thal, who I had met years back at a friend's place in Santa Fe. I had been impressed with him then, especially his horse handling skills, as he was able to handle my extremely shot phobic thoroughbred calmly and kindly, something none of my local vets had ever been able to do. With this previous knowledge of Dr. Thal, I felt confident taking Capaz to his clinic an hour from where I was. In spite of it being a Sunday, Dr. Thal and his staff were there to receive us and got Capaz in immediately for evaluation. Another impaction....... which they dealt with in quick order by tubing him and doing a variety of other tests for his general condition. Capaz remained at Dr. Thal's in one of his hospital stalls where he was tubed a couple more times and the impaction was resolved and moved out of his system. At that point, Dr. Thal said that I could take him home, but he also suggested considering further investigation of what was going on in Capaz's system to cause two colics in six months. I chose to have Capaz stay with Dr. Thal to have him completely checked out and observed.
During this time, Capaz was observed, handled, exercised and tended to better than I could have hoped for. Dr. Thal kept me up to date with clear communication and it was all done with concern and a good sense of humor that made it clear to me that Dr. Thal loves his work and values the horses and their owners. During his stay there, we talked about the best plan for Capaz to go forward, happy and healthy. Dr. Thal helped me come up with a better feeding program part of which involved a change to a better quality hay ..... which my other horses are grateful for too!!!
I can't say enough in praise of Dr. Thal's facility and the care that Capaz got while he was there. The staff is wonderful.....they all really care and were wonderfully responsive to a high maintenance, worried owner ...... ME!! My boy is home now, enjoying good health, back with his herd. My only regret it that I don't live closer to Dr. Thal so that I can have such great attentive, skilled service on an ongoing basis. Maybe I'll start searching the Santa Fe real estate ads!!! In the meantime, I know that Thal Equine is there for me whenever I may need them. It's worth the drive for sure!!

Dr. Thal performed colic surgery on my barrel horse. He and his staff are great! I cannot say enough good things about them.. Dr. Thal called as soon as he finshed surgery, and kept a close eye on her through the night. He called me every morning and evening to keep me updated on how she was doing. Once I got to bring her home, he continued to keep in touch to see how she was doing as the months of recovery went on. I am so happy to say her first run back she ran amazing and placed! She is proof after a major colic surgery like she had your horse will come back good and strong. I cannot thank Dr. Thal and his staff enough for saving my horse and taking such good care of her. I highly recommend them.

My wife, Kathy, and her endurance horse, Blue, completed the roughest, toughest endurance ride of them all---the Tevis Cup. Blue was age 18 at the time, and they completed on their first try. Doug Thal's amazing abilities as a vet and surgeon were a chief reason that Blue vetted out of Tevis with all "A's" with one of the toughest eval vets at the ride. Tevis Cup: 100-miles in 24 hours over the roughest terrain in the west.
Blue still competes at age 24 and loves to do so. Dr Thal has been key in keeping him going in peak form for his age. With over 2400 miles in competition, we have seen a bit of everything come up, and Thal always seems to find a solution.
Dr. Thal is truly one of the best equine vets and most gifted surgeons ANYWHERE. We are extremely luck to have him here in New Mexico.

Dr. Thal treated our yearling Gyspsy filly for a deadly bacteria that almost always results in death. When Izzy arrived at his clinic Dr. Thal did a battery of tests to find out what had caused her kidneys to go into failure and her intestines to shut down. Izzy was a very sick little horse and her condition was guarded with a low chance of survival. Dr. Thal stayed up with her throughout the night and had her on an IV drip with medication to treat what he suspected the issue to be. Test results showed that Dr. Thal was right and that the treatment he was doing was just what Izzy needed. She continued to improve and was able to come home after a week in the hospital. I continued to receive calls every day for more than a week from Dr. Thals office checking up on Izzy's progress. Their loving care of my little girl was more than fantastic. Wonderful service. Dr. Doug Thal and his staff have taken care of our horses for many years. Doug is a horse owner and cares very deeply for the animals. He is detailed, knowledgeable, professional and I trust his opinion and his advice. He is a partner in the health of our horses (and mule) and I feel confident that my horses are getting the best care. In addition, Doug is responsive and I feel comfortable asking questions because I always get a complete answer that clarifies any decisions I have to make. He understands my concerns and my love for my horses. Several of our horses have spent time in his hospital and we are so grateful that he has this facility when our horses need constant care. Sophia Krajewski who works with Doug, is also a very sensitive and competent veterinarian who we have used on many occasions and recommend highly.

least, we needed guidance, mentorship and reassurance on this very new responsibility. Dr. Thal
and his very competent staff have been there for us every step of the way and we cannot
recommend him highly enough for his patience, competence, professionalism and
compassion.
We are now getting to be "seasoned" horse owners, where every scratch does not warrant

Dr. Thal has provided veterinary services for our horses for the past 5 years. He is an excellent vet with extrodinary knowledge and experience. We have had several serious problems that Doug promptly treated. We feel very secure that he returns phone calls and texts promptly, even late at night and on weekends and holidays. If you have never seen his hospital facility it is world class, as are his services. He and his staff are friendly and professional to work with. We have always found his fee structure and recomendations reasonable and appropriate. If you haven't had an opportunity to see his almost FREE app. "Horse Side Vet Guide" you should. This app is helpful to diagnose and isolate many different equine problems.

Capaz remained at Dr. Thal's in one of his hospital stalls where he was tubed a couple more times and the impaction was resolved and moved out of his system. At that point, Dr. Thal said that I could take him home, but he also suggested considering further investigation of what was going on in Capaz's system to cause two colics in six months. I chose to have Capaz stay with Dr. Thal to have him completely checked out and observed.
During this time, Capaz was observed, handled, exercised and tended to better than I could have hoped for. Dr. Thal kept me up to date with clear communication and it was all done with concern and a good sense of humor that made it clear to me that Dr. Thal loves his work and values the horses and their owners. During his stay there, we talked about the best plan for Capaz to go forward, happy and healthy. Dr. Thal helped me come up with a better feeding program part of which involved a change to a better quality hay ..... which my other horses are grateful for too!!!
I can't say enough in praise of Dr. Thal's facility and the care that Capaz got while he was there. The staff is wonderful.....they all really care and were wonderfully responsive to a high maintenance, worried owner ...... ME!! My boy is home now, enjoying good health, back with his herd. My only regret it that I don't live closer to Dr. Thal so that I can have such great attentive, skilled service on an ongoing basis. Maybe I'll start searching the Santa Fe real estate ads!!! In the meantime, I know that Thal Equine is there for me whenever I may need them. It's worth the drive for sure!!

Dr. Thal called as soon as he finshed surgery, and kept a close eye on her through the night. He called me every morning and evening to keep me updated on how she was doing. Once I got to bring her home, he continued to keep in touch to see how she was doing as the months of recovery went on. I am so happy to say her first run back she ran amazing and placed! She is proof after a major colic surgery like she had your horse will come back good and strong. I cannot thank Dr. Thal and his staff enough for saving my horse and taking such good care of her. I highly recommend them.

Dr. Thal is always responsive and incredibly thorough. He diagnosed my very sick old horse correctly and got him on the road to recovery immediately. I would not use any other equine vet.

My wife, Kathy, and her endurance horse, Blue, completed the roughest, toughest endurance ride of them all---the Tevis Cup. Blue was age 18 at the time, and they completed on their first try. Doug Thal's amazing abilities as a vet and surgeon were a chief reason that Blue vetted out of Tevis with all "A's" with one of the toughest eval vets at the ride. Tevis Cup: 100-miles in 24 hours over the roughest terrain in the west.
Blue still competes at age 24 and loves to do so. Dr Thal has been key in keeping him going in peak form for his age. With over 2400 miles in competition, we have seen a bit of everything come up, and Thal always seems to find a solution.
Dr. Thal is truly one of the best equine vets and most gifted surgeons ANYWHERE. We are extremely luck to have him here in New Mexico.

Dr. Thal treated our yearling Gyspsy filly for a deadly bacteria that almost always results in death. When Izzy arrived at his clinic Dr. Thal did a battery of tests to find out what had caused her kidneys to go into failure and her intestines to shut down. Izzy was a very sick little horse and her condition was guarded with a low chance of survival. Dr. Thal stayed up with her throughout the night and had her on an IV drip with medication to treat what he suspected the issue to be. Test results showed that Dr. Thal was right and that the treatment he was doing was just what Izzy needed. She continued to improve and was able to come home after a week in the hospital. I continued to receive calls every day for more than a week from Dr. Thals office checking up on Izzy's progress. Their loving care of my little girl was more than fantastic. Wonderful service. Dr. Doug Thal and his staff have taken care of our horses for many years. Doug is a horse owner and cares very deeply for the animals. He is detailed, knowledgeable, professional and I trust his opinion and his advice. He is a partner in the health of our horses (and mule) and I feel confident that my horses are getting the best care. In addition, Doug is responsive and I feel comfortable asking questions because I always get a complete answer that clarifies any decisions I have to make. He understands my concerns and my love for my horses. Several of our horses have spent time in his hospital and we are so grateful that he has this facility when our horses need constant care. Sophia Krajewski who works with Doug, is also a very sensitive and competent veterinarian who we have used on many occasions and recommend highly.

and his very competent staff have been there for us every step of the way and we cannot
recommend him highly enough for his patience, competence, professionalism and
compassion.
We are now getting to be "seasoned" horse owners, where every scratch does not warrant

Dr. Thal has provided veterinary services for our horses for the past 5 years. He is an excellent vet with extrodinary knowledge and experience. We have had several serious problems that Doug promptly treated. We feel very secure that he returns phone calls and texts promptly, even late at night and on weekends and holidays. If you have never seen his hospital facility it is world class, as are his services. He and his staff are friendly and professional to work with. We have always found his fee structure and recomendations reasonable and appropriate. If you haven't had an opportunity to see his almost FREE app. "Horse Side Vet Guide" you should. This app is helpful to diagnose and isolate many different equine problems.
