Admittedly, I am a crazy dog lady with impossibly high standards- which is exactly why I choose to bring my dog to Parkside.After having less than spectacular experiences and spending small fortunes to be told things I already knew at another veterinary office, I decided it was time to make the switch. Dr. Hotaling was my late family dog's veterinarian, and the Parkside practice in general was referred to me by a number of people- after my first time, I understood why. Upon entrance, you're welcomed with a friendly greeting by the staff. The waiting area and exam rooms are immaculate, and the wait time is never long. The reception team is so organized and thoughtful, remembering details about you and your pet. The techs are so caring, and treat your animal as if it were their own. Dr. Hotaling is AMAZING, I really can't say enough wonderful things about him- he is everything you want someone taking care of your best friend to be.Going to the vet always used to be something that made both myself and my dog riddled with anxiety. Now when I drop him off for even full day-long appointments, he happily wags off with one of the vet techs. My dog has been a patient here for a few years and no major complaints. However, I was recently quoted "$1000, maybe more" for a dental cleaning with possible tooth extractions. I thought that was outrageous so I got a second opinion at Oakwood vet clinic in Troy. The quote there was $300-350 for the same exact procedures. I had the work done at Oakwood a week ago and was charged $350 for the teeth cleaning and six tooth extractions. My dachshund's teeth look great, he healed well, and I saved at least $700! I love my dog and would pay whatever it takes to keep him healthy, but Parkside seems like a bit of a rip off in my opinion. Read Less

They tried to justify the fact that they're charging $520 to neuter a 2 year old dog by saying that "every vet in the capital region cut corners" when I've had two perfectly healthy dogs neutered and spayed through Oakwood for half of that with the same exact procedures. They didn't want to release my dog to a friend because I couldn't make it even though I paid through the phone....tried to charge him again when he got there...But we can definitely leave our dog there overnight for an additional $200... Elise the manager was also incredibly rude and condescending over the phone when my wife called about picking up the dog. To add insult to injury, she asked my wife to remove her review because apparently anyone could read between the lines and know that she was disgruntled since her argument is invalid. Besides being wonderful for regular pet visits for my cats, they were absolutely wonderful throughout my kitten's illness. They were all extremely supportive and I trusted my Maui in their care. I truly felt that they cared about my kitten, all the tech/workers knew him by name and asked about his progress every time I was there. Dr. Green was the main vet that helped us and she was great and I never felt out of the loop with what was going on. After going to 3 different vets to the tune of 300.00 (none of them could diagnose what was ailing my tabby), I finally found a veterinary clinic I trust. Not only was the staff kind and professional, but they were also straightforward about the costs. The vet was thorough and understood that I was not made of money. She hydrated my cat, gave him a blood test, administered fungicide to his ears, and took a stool sample. She also gave me a sample of bland kibble and syringes for his dehydration. They might be expensive but when you consider the overhead, the equipment and paying the staff, I felt very confident that these vets care and are extremely knowledgeable. The staff: doctors, technicians, and secretaries all have the utmost concern for the animals and their owners. The knowledge of the staff is unequaled. The care given for two years to an aged cat with diabetes was touching. They prolonged her life and when it was time to end it, they lovingly came to our house and made her and us feel comfortable. We've been going to Parkside for almost 3 years now and we highly recommend all of the staff, from the secretarial, to techs to doctors. Our "babies" have always received the best and most gentle care. We now have 4 cats: Shadow - 2 years, Rascal 1 years and our two newest babies, brothers Timmy & Thomas, just 14 weeks now. EACH of our little "toms" have gone here since they were 10 weeks old. Our cats are all rescues and came with an assortment of health challenges. Shadow is alive today because of the excellent care he received from Dr. Nick Outterson and his referral to Dr. Todd Bishop. We have seen Dr. Nowak and Dr. Meyers and most recently Dr. "Keith" and they love our babies like their own. We love Jeannie, Jen, Michele and other office staff and know that our boys will have long, healthy lives because of the care they receive here. There are several other veterinary offices much closer to us than Parkside. The fact that we travel the extra distance to bring our boys here, says something positive!Read Less

My regular doctor came in while i was still getting needed bloodwork that had to be done early before his shift started. We have brought our dog to this practice for years and have been very happy with them. Our vet retired and we now see Dr. Hotaling, who is extremely knowledgeable. He takes the time to answer all our questions. He is also so gentle and caring with our dog that it puts both her and us at ease! The staff is great and is always willing to help you out. I have been very pleased with Parkside, All the doctors take time to make the pets and owners feel comfortable and do a thorough exam.. Dr. Myer is wise, compassionate, and skilled. She explains all the alternatives and puts the health of the pet over profit. My dogs love her and all the staff especially their best buddy Jess. It is the cleanest veterinary clinic I have been in. Every time I have come in with an emergency, the veterinarian has been wonderful. Once I had a little dog faking neck injury and pain late on the Friday (last patient) before a long weekend. After a thorough exam that turned up nothing, the vet and her assistant sat on the floor for fifteen minutes playing with my dog and within a few minutes he totally "recovered." When the time comes to let a beloved pet go, time is taken to relax the pet and the owner is given all the time and privacy needed both before and after the procedure. Read Less

We had our two siamese kittens altered here yesterday.  Front desk staff were friendly and cheerful.  Dr. Hotaling gave each kitten a thorough exam and explained the kittens' conditions, how the procedure would work, etc.He called around noon to tell us that the procedures went very well and that the kittens were fine.  We brought them home in great health, fully recovered from the anesthesia and with good appetites.The entire staff is friendly, upbeat and the atmosphere is very upbeat.We will use them again. Both my cat and my dog are Parkside patients, and I have always been very happy with the care and service we get there.  I have found them to be accessible whenever I needed to get in, and have had great success emailing the practice through the website when I couldn't get away to make a phone call.  Both the staff and the vets are all obviously animal-people, and they remember me and my animals whenever we come through.  We have seen Dr. Burroughs and Dr. Looney as well as a few others, all of whom were very professional and friendly.I also have to give them a plug because, more than once, when I have asked about a service or treatment that was expensive but unnecessary, they have told me so.  I have never felt pressured or shamed by Parkside vets or staff, and I trust them completely with my animals.  I can't imagine going anywhere else. Just got back from my first visit to Parkside. I wanted to take my cat in for a checkup and found this place, where else- on Yelp! And I have to say, they deserve 5 stars. I am SO glad I didn't decide to go somewhere else (and I almost did because I thought it would be expensive... only $60 for a checkup).My cat saw Dr. Hotaling and he was awesome. The few concerns I had during the checkup he answered and made sure he checked on my cat and explained every possible thing that could be causing the problems. My boyfriend and I thought he was very caring and even talked about his cats so we could see the love for animals he had.The thing I liked the most about Parkside is that they didn't push me to buy products or to do extra testing. Dr. Hotaling made sure I knew it was my decision if I wanted any of those extras since my cat was pretty healthy. Some vets would have pushed me to get a test done or buy a vitamin that the Dr. did suggest but said was my decision and not completely necessary. This place was definitely what I expected and I hoped it to be. The only minor complaint I had was that I didn't get seen until about 20 minutes after my appointment time, but late in the day at a busy office, this is to be expected. Dr. Devries is the best.  Took my cats here for the longest time while i lived in the area.  Unfortunately I moved cross country, and the vet wouldn't come with me.Highly caring group of people, and unfortunately for vets in my area, they have a very very high standard to live up to.  Still haven't found my permanent vet yet.They've been here through the highs and the lows.  They are a little pricey, BUT they won't shove a treatment on you that is needed, or won't help.  They'll tell you what they can do, and they'll tell you if (and why) it's necessary.  I don't think i'll ever find another vet I like so much.If you want a vet that gives top notch care, and CARES about both you and your pet, then go here. Parkside was recommended to me by a friend who had been taking her dogs here for several years and loved the place.  The biggest thing that stands out for me is the great staff who are all extremely friendly and gentle.  It's very apparent that each of them genuinely cares about the animals they treat like they are their own.  The vets and support staff all handle the animals - and their parents - with kindness and patience.Husband and I took our young cat here because he was beginning to act crazy and we knew it was time for his ceremonial scrotum-snipping.  We were a little stressed when they informed us that we had to leave him overnight for the surgery.  They were happy to answer all our questions and were very pleasant in explaining their accommodations.  When we picked him up the next day, the man who handed him over told us how well he did and even commented on some of his unique personality traits.  Although this was clearly a routine procedure for Parkside, they did a great job making it very smooth for both the pet and pet owner. Dr.DeVries has been our cocker's primary care giver for 11 years. Illnesses and injuries have run the gambit. He has met every challenge we've brought him with kindness and immeasurable skill in diagnosis and treatment. He treats an injured paw with as much caring as he treats heart ailments. When it's your dog on the exam table this is exactly what you hope for. He takes his time with each dog at each appointment and makes sure everything is explained and all our questions answered. The medical care he has provided has been exemplary. Over the years different courses of treatment for specific ailments have been recommended. He has always offered the least invasive as our first course of action, when appropriate, to help avoid having to put any of our dogs through a surgery. However if surgery has been the best way to go he is honest and goes over the procedure with us and allows us to make the decision after we are completely informed. We cannot recommend Dr. DeVries highly enough. We obviously have complete faith in him as a physician as we have entrusted him with the health and well being of an invaluable part of our lives. Ditto concerning the immaculate facilities and the friendliest and most helpful staff in any office/hospital, whether for man or beast. Dr. Richard DeVries has taken care of our three cats for the past six years. He is so intelligent and professional, yet gentle and caring, and was a godsend when confronting the devastating end of life issues in our two elderly cats, one with heart disease and one with chronic renal failure. At one point, per my option, he even supervised six months of subcutaneous fluids at home for my cat with renal disese. I wouldn't go anywhere else! I should add, when you call you won't have to go through a phone menu, and I've been put on hold only once in six years. Whoever answers the phone always seems to know me and my kitties by name, and I'm always able to get an appointment when needed. Then I rarely wait more than a few minutes. What more could I ask for? We have used Parkside Veterinary Hospital since the early 1990s, and there aren't enough superlatives to describe how wonderful they are, in every aspect of medical care for beloved pets. They have cared for our five (going on six) dogs and one cat. One dog had epilepsy, two had Cushing's, one had sinus cancer, one had aggressive tendencies, and the kitty had congestive heart failure. Each one received superior, thorough, competent medical care from the veterinarians, as well as gentle, patient, understanding and competent handling and care from the technicians. Our animals have received care at Parkside for everything from routine wellness visits and tests to diagnostic tests, x-rays and ultrasound to major surgery, to therapeutic acupuncture and chiropractic treatments. We have been completely satisfied with every aspect of the care provided. Everyone and his/her animal is treated, always, with kindness, compassion, courtesy and respect from the entire staff. The receptionists never fail to be courteous, friendly, welcoming and helpful. Parkside's physical facility is impeccably clean, from the sidewalk to an entrance ramp to accommodate old animals to the waiting area to the exam rooms. Dr. Caries has shown extraordinary skill and compassion during her treatment of Jordie. Thanks to her, his quality of life is good as his presence in my life continues to be a daily gift. Without Dr. Caries, Jordie would not be here today. All of the receptionists and techs are outstanding people whose many kindnesses and patience with an old dog and his person are much appreciated.
