After graduating from City College in New York, Dr. Robert followed his dream to become a veterinarian. Upon graduating from the college of veterinary medicine in 1939 at Cornell University he opened the North Shore Animal Hospital in Bayside. In 1942 Dr. Robert closed the hospital to serve in the US Army Veterinary Corps. After finishing his tour of duty with the Army he re-opened the hospital in 1946.

My 17 year old chihuahua was having consistent dry cough so i brought her in and Dr. Gooden simply suggested she must have kennel cough. He prescribed her medicine but it wasn’t helping at all. I brought her in again and said I don’t believe it’s that. He then said maybe she has collapsed trachea. He didn’t even bother to take xrays or anything to confirm the diagnosis and just prescribed a different medication. My baby was still struggling so I brought her in again, this time to see Dr. Rosen (since my friend said he has chihuahuas so he should be more caring). He suggested we take an X-ray but she was in distress, turning blue so he gave her some oxygen to stabilize and told me she could go if we try again. Then hearing about my friends old dog that had the same issue, I asked what if we give her steroids for now and he gave her a two week supply injection with antibiotics. I watched her for the next couple days and it was like a miracle! She was breathing fine and being back to her normal self. Then as the 2 week was coming up, they gave me a technician appt (not seeing the dr) and when I called, he said he would prescribe her pills this time and we’ll watch how she reacts to it. A week went by and she started panting a lot and I could see her little body wasn’t taking it well. My next appt was the next sat but on Sunday morning, I called as soon as they opened to see if I could pick up albuterol instead. I read alot of stories how the albuterol would just target the lungs straight instead of going through her body and affecting the other parts. I left a message and the receptionist said he’ll call me back later. Around 3:40 I called again and the lady said “rest assured he’ll call you at the end of the day. He’s with patients now. I waited and waited and he never called back. That night my dog passed. I know my dog was old and I can’t solely blame them but the fact he didn’t call me back is so unprofessional and incompassionate. It made me think is it cuz I switched from him to Dr. Rosen? I could think of no other reason why he didn’t call back. Either no concern for my dog or just plain spiteful. Read Less

If I could I would give them less than one star. I called them early morning after I found a large puddle of blood and pee. The woman I spoke to over the phone at about 8-830 explained it was common for male cats to have crystal / grit build up and to bring him in at 2:30PM. When I got there the veterinarian said his bladder wasn’t full (well duh he forced all the pee out earlier that morning & wasn’t eating or drinking after that) so we had to “keep an eye on him.” He also said it was unlikely it was a UTI and he would need a diet change to prescription medicine but still sent me home with medication to treat a UTI and no prescription for the food. They didn’t offer any samples / or a case of the food until I was able to order / buy it. Two and a half days later I found my cat under the couch with a large stream of blood around him. I called Instavet (Bc they are an emergency hospital) and they explained I needed to take him to a 24 hour vet hospital Bc he definitely needs to stay over night. On my way I called the vet and they agreed I should take him to a hospital bc they are not equipped to handle that type of emergency. I took him to blue pearl and he was nearly dead. They had to sedate him and put a catheter in, Which should have been done on Thursday when I originally called. I was given a $4100 bill and when I called north shore to see what they had to say And figure out how to move forward i was given the run around and now weeks later no one has called or tried to offer a solution. I’m appalled and disgusted. If you don’t want your animal to suffer I’d pick a different veterinarian office that isnt negligent and will almost kill your loved one. Read Less

I've brought both of my beloved cats here for their regular checkups - scheduling an appointment is a breeze, staff is friendly, and there was never a long wait. The vets have a great sense of humor, and are very patient but firm with our more aggressive kitty. Our first visit actually turned me and my boyfriend's lives upside down when they revealed that our newly adopted cat was not a "13-year-old male" as the shelter had told us, but actually a 2-year-old female! Will keep coming back, as it's only a short walk from our apartment. Read Less

Love this place. Effing Love this place. Would come here and hang out if it didn't look weird for a grown person to hang out at an animal hospital. Actually I wouldn't hang out there. But I do recommend anybody who has a pet to at least take a look at this place. They are super reasonable. Their prices. Their doctors. They try to find the best possible solution without breaking your pocket. They care about your pet. I've only gone on weekends and it wasn't so packed. I didn't want to write this review and rave about it so less people would go. THATS HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS PLACE. So long story short. My pup Zooey got bit at a dog park. Got a laceration on the flesh side of her booty. Went to BLVD Animal Clinic and they tried to charge me 2200+ for surgery. Obscene!  Got referred to NSAH and never looked back. Wouldn't go anywhere else. Read Less

After going to my other vet 2x for my dogs scratched cornea and receiving nothing but antibiotic ointment, I decided to try another place, North Shore Animal Hospital. Background:My pup Sadie scratched her eye on a hike on December 31st when we were on vacation. We went to the ER vet here in the Cape on January 5th, and they gave us ointment and carprofen for the pain and swelling. $180Two weeks later, we went to our normal vet, they stained her eye and told us the same thing as the other place. They didn't give us anything else to repair her cornea, just more carprofen. They also told us that they would have to refer us to an opthalmologist if she wasn't better in a week. $150I am very satisfied with my experience here at NSAH because, they saw my little girl, gave her the dye stain, and then they drew her blood, made a serum from it, and put it in a tube for us to drop into her eye. They also gave us antibiotic drops which was easier to apply than the original ointment. THEN, they also gave us this corneal repair gel to help with the healing. All of this stuff wound up costing under $150. Amie the vet was wonderful and my Sadie girl trusted her. She was gentle and very patient as I asked a ton of questions. This was by far the best vet experience since we moved here. Thankfully, I now have a vet that I fully trust with my babies. My only suggestion is that we get some newer furniture in the waiting room and the exam rooms. They were from like 1990 Also, I apologize to the girl at the front desk for weeping uncontrollably as I heard/saw a dog mama put her baby down. The nurses were visibly grieving with the mama and that solidified it for me. I'm sticking around Read Less

Rating a vet hospital is tough because your rating will depend on the outcome of your pet which unfortunately is sometimes completely out of everyone's hands. I am giving this review based on a recent check up for my cat and the service we received. I brought my senior cat here because his appetite has been low and he looks a bit too thin. He cried the whole way there and peed in his carrier. I asked for wipes and papers and they told me they had just run out of wipes and gave me paper. I asked if I could wait inside a room with him so I could take him outside his carrier and clean him up. They prepped a room quickly for me and  I was able to bring him out. The vet techs took the carrier to clean in the back. When they brought it back it had been washed and was dry on the inside and lined with paper. They also helped clean my cat with what wipes they had left. The vet examined my cat and ordered a blood test. I requested it be done in the room with me thinking it might help my cat relax-he still went nuts. The vet techs had to bring out gloves and wrap his upper body in a blanket for their protection. They drew the blood and did what they had to to get it done without him scratching and biting them. It was a bit hard to see but there would have been no other way. Overall I am satisfied with how nice everyone was. Both the vet techs got scratched but they didn't stop smiling and saying it was okay. I will update later if I have any comments about his results or further exams done on him. Read Less

I wonder why the reviews are so good in the recent years here? They say they care about animals, but they really don't. You can tell after one visit. My friend's dog ended up dying at the place because the vet techs mistreated the dog and the dog became restless and traumatized as they tried to tie him with a rope. The workers are very inexperienced and they seem to be learning how to do everything while diagnosing your pet... If you decide to go, make sure not to see Dr. Rosen (owner - doesn't have good integrity), but Dr. Zhen. Also, ask to keep your pet and have them do everything in front of you. Everything is very overly priced. If anything, please go find a nicer vet who would really care...Otherwise, visit this place and have your pet used as a training animal for the techs. I did not have Dr Foley as my vet. I had a different vet at this facility. He wasn't so much the problem. But of course the vets are going to be nice, they want your business. He did rush me when I brought my cat in for a check up and some blood work and it wasn't even busy that day. I was the only client there, which doesn't say much for their business. My cat was given back to me shaky with blood on her back leg and it was very bruised. They said that the vet tech had some trouble finding a vein. After speaking with a friend of a friend I found out that a lot of the vet techs here aren't licensed or even in school for vet tech. No wonder she couldn't find the vein. This hospital hires people off the street and allows them to do invasive procedures to your pet without a license! When I called for the results and to complain their office manager was very rude, spoke over me and basically told me my information was incorrect. Well, my cat's bruised and bloody leg speaks for itself. I would NEVER go back here again. I suggest you bring your pets elsewhere. Somewhere that hires licensed veterinary technicians! Read Less

He didn’t even bother to take xrays or anything to confirm the diagnosis and just prescribed a different medication. My baby was still struggling so I brought her in again, this time to see Dr. Rosen (since my friend said he has chihuahuas so he should be more caring).

Read Less
