Bedford Stuyvesant Veterinary Clinic

Brooklyn, New York
General Info
The Bedford Stuyvesant Veterinary Clinic in Brooklyn interprets animals as living movement maps by adjusting its responses in posture, distance, and tone to match the pets' emotional rhythms. The difference becomes apparent to numerous New York families. Each visit begins with calibration where the pet's entrance speed orientation and gaze patterns whether resting or flickering are observed. Care develops through the imitation of observed actions. When the feline spirals into a coil, human attendants retreat. When dogs start leaning they perform a gentle forward movement. Physical contact occurs only after extended pauses when readiness indicators confirm stability. Silence is used frequently and interaction contrast is planned: stillness after sound light after dim space after proximity. The Bedford Stuyvesant Veterinary Clinic provides treatment services in dermatology nutrition refinement joint care disease screening and pain mitigation. They implement decision trees rather than sequence enforcement so whenever alertness levels increase diagnostic processes halt. They continue their actions whenever calm deepens. This reasoning framework enables animals with long-standing anxiety issues to complete tests without entering a downward spiral. Discharge protocols become intricately designed systems that reflect cues for closing distance dimming interaction and utilizing rhythms such as meals or walks to restore regulation. Families gain access to emotional pacing guidance alongside their medical aftercare instructions. The delicate adjustments transform the homecoming experience into a genuine return rather than a clinical reverberation. The Bedford Stuyvesant Veterinary Clinic delivers its unique veterinary approach to homes throughout New York from Brooklyn by practicing a method that observes before acting and listens before speaking yet responds before prescribing.

Dr. Pruden has been my vet since she opened her doors on Tompkins Avenue in 2005. She has been our go-to person for our pets' health care needs.                                                                                                               First was my tricolor beagle Bailey whom I inherited from a former student. In his final weeks, Dr. Pruden supported Bailey in having an end that was rooted in dignity. She also held my hand as I wrestled deeply with saying goodbye to an animal that had carved unique channels into my life and heart.                                                                                                                                                                                           Spades, a mostly hound female rescue from the farmlands of NC, looks forward to meeting and greeting neighbors and strangers alike on our daily walks. In her first weeks in the city, Dr. Pruden worked carefully with me to manage all the parasites -- inside and out -- that this country girl had brought with her. Her signature white coat with "spades" of rust all over -- and her beautiful affect -- are a magnet for neighborhood kids and adults alike.                                                                                                              Now 21 years old, Tuxedo -- a black and white gib -- has spent the bulk of his years in Dr. Pruden's care. Our most recent adventure was removal of a basal cell carcinoma; he is now recovering beautifully with his usual First Cat affect on full display.                                                                                                                                                                         We're currently working on managing the weight of our low-thyroid function tabby, Brooklyn. I am hoping that by fall, she will no longer be the 16-pound enigma that friends constantly threaten to broadcast all over social media. This work involves diet modifications, more exercise, daily medications, and regular weigh-ins.                                                                                                                                                                                                                   The well-being and affect of these incredible quads is directly attributable to the work of their care team. In addition to offering industry standard practices, Dr. Pruden and her staff are attentive, personable and warm. I can always count on Dr. P and her team -- Cory, Desmond, Kelsy, Melissa and Winston -- to give quality direct care, to follow up fastidiously by phone and email (they were just ecstatic to relay news about Tuxedo's biopsy at 7:30 AM one recent summer weekday morning...tsk, tsk team...I know you forgot I'm in teacher recovery mode...no phone calls before 10:00 AM!!!) and to make us feel welcome on each visit.                                                                                                                                                                             We're glad you're in the neighborhood, Dr. Pruden! Thank you for all that you do. And I hope you'll be able to re-occupy your Tompkins Avenue space soon! Read Less

I got a kitten and kept her in only one area of my apartment, she wasn't allowed in the living room and bedroom until she was cleared by a vet. I took her to this vet and brought up the fact that she was itching her ears and she had patches of hair missing. Dr. Pruden told me she had an ear infection by smelling the otoscope and put her on antibiotic ear drops. As a registered nurse, I was skeptical and should have known better but I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt because I work with humans and not animals. I brought her back a week later after the antibiotic drops and she cleared her. Again she dismissed the skin saying she thought it was her diet and that her bowls must not be metal. After she dismissed me twice, I started to allow the kitten in all areas of the apartment and had other people hold and play with her. After almost 3 weeks since I originally brought her to Dr. Pruden, I started having patches of ringworm popping up on my body along with two other people. Instead of having this infection controlled from the beginning, Dr. Pruden made it worse by putting her on antibiotic drops that killed all the good bacteria in her ears allowing the fungus to spread easier. Now I am bleaching my apartment daily, washing my sheets daily, and treating not only the kitten but myself multiple times a day. I brought her to a new vet and they diagnosed her with ringworm by using a black light, which isn't even an expensive or difficult diagnosis for Dr. Pruden to do. I am now starting a very long and expensive process of trying to clear this highly contagious infection from myself, my kitten, and my home. I would not recommend this place at all. Read Less

I had a hard time having this doctor take my concerns about my cat's poor response to treatment seriously... two months (and several thousand dollars) later, he's finally getting the care he needs ... from a different vet. I have never written a bad review in my life before, but it had to be doen as a service to others as I so wish I had read the reviews before coming here. Horrible Horrible HORRIBLE experience here. Worst experience I've ever had at any business. Please save your pets, take them literally anywhere but here. First of all, we had an appointment for 1, and they made us wait until 4PM. 3 HOURS in the tiny waiting room that smelled like piss and was way overcrowded, with nowhere to sit. Tried to rip us off and charge us 600 dollars (for the same services we got for 150 dollars at a MUCH nice vet), gave our kittens unnecessary X-rays, the vet tech grabbed one kitten by the neck and SWANG HIM ALL AROUND BACK AND FORTH VIOLENTLY while he was screaming and we were telling him to stop! It was so traumatizing, I was so scared to ever take my kittens to a vet again. We soon learned this is NOT the norm in NYC, JUST THIS AWFUL PLACE. Please, please listen to me do not go here and risk your pets health, your time, and your wallet. Read Less

ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE! Please do not take your animal here. I took my dog here for tumors in her abdomen and an x-ray was done. Come to find out the x-ray was only done in the chest to see if anything was affecting her heart. A few months later my dog isn't eating and acting very strange and bleeding for weeks. I bought her back to the vet only to find out she has pyometra which could have been detected if they did the x-ray in the area that I initially came to them about. So I was priced $3,300+ for the surgery to remove the pyometra including all things needed during and after surgery. After that price tag and realizing that I just paid $450+ for a second time that, which could have been prevented if the first visit was properly handle, I decided this place is a scam. Funny thing, a week after the second visit which was in February, I get an email that my dog was due for a shot in January. Why wasn't this mentioned when I was there? So now I'm expected to return, pay another $150+ just to see the vet and then get the shot? I WILL NOT. I took my dog to the ASPCA hospital and the surgery and all things needed totaled $1200.. the removal of pyometra was only $600! The price for the pyometra remove at this vet.... $2600(not including IV, Catheder and all other things needed). Even when this vet sent over the x-rays to the ASPCA, they mentioned that the x-rays were so choppy and bad that they couldn't even read them. Read Less

They were sooo sweet, every person that came in they remembered the animal and their owner's name. Was very delicate with my kitty, very gentle hands, didn't have to wait long either. But the best parts was the doctor sat with me and explained every single thing on the blood test results, like why his protein count is too much, to how this level being too high means the kidney is working too hard and we don't want that and why, etc. I learned soooo much, they really took their time to explain things to help stop future issues from happening. They even made me practice putting the medicine on him. And I loved how they kept calling me mom (heart melted). They even called me the next day to see how my sweetie was doing and that for me made me soooooo happy.  I recommend them!!!I think I would give them a 5stars if they gave him a gift due to it being his first time there and that would have made it gold! Terrible experience in every way. Do not trust this place with the health of your pets! We took our cat in because of very sudden and unsettling changes in his behavior. We knew something was very wrong. The Doctor was rude and treated us like naive pet owners, and before even doing any really work on our cat, presumed to tell us we probably had an unhealthy cat for reasons she totally assumed, that are in fact absolutely untrue. She then proceeded to do X-rays and blood tests which showed that our cat is overall VERY healthy, proving everything that she said before, wrong. She told us to just give him more attention at home, and sent us home. (He gets SO much love and attention, that is not an issue). Later that same day, we just knew something was still very wrong, so we took our cat to the ER, where the doctors there IMMEDIATELY saw that he had a severe urinary blockage, a very common thing in male cats that the other doctor at Bedstuy Vet should have been able to detect. Serious blockage like this can lead to death very quickly, and had we not followed our gut and taken him to the ER, we may have lost him. We called the doctor at Bedstuy Vet the next day to tell her, and again she was very rude. DON'T GO HERE. Read Less

I have a 5 year old small Maltese Mix named Starr. My family and I had to go away for a couple days to attend my sister's graduation in Georgia. Unfortunately, I couldn't take my little baby with me. I didn't want to leave her with just anyone and I wasn't sure who would take care of her the way that I do. Then one day my uncle came back from his vacation before I left and referred this place to me. His dog stayed for a whole week and was perfectly fine so I decided to take Starr. When I got there, Melissa and Leslie were extremely nice to me and Starr! I was nervous for my puppy because she NEVER stayed away from home. These two young ladies made sure that Starr was well taken care of and they even sent me pictures while I was away. She looked so content in the pictures and I was so happy that she was in great hands! I even called to see how she was adapting and each time I called, all I got was amazing phone etiquette from these two ladies and great updates on Starr. Thank you guys once again for taking care of my little Starr!!!! You guys are the best!! Read Less

My review is based only on seeing the place. I didn't stay to have my cat seen. The place is seriously a dump. My expectations aren't ridiculously high but if they can't keep the front area even somewhat presentable, are they keeping the back area hygienic and up to code? Wish I could give this place no stars. First of all the vet is only in like 3 days a week, what's the point in being open if you don't have a doctor in house??? Secondly the staff is SO RUDE. I spoke to a young woman on the phone wish I would've gotten her name so I could post it here she was not only rude to me but also wasn't helpful in the slightest. I've worked with animals for years she thinks because she answers phones here she can be rude to someone calling who would potentially be spending their money here. She literally asks me "why did you call us if you already know what your going to do then".... DO YOU NOT WANT BUSINESS? Sorry I'm calling trying to set up an appointment for a cat that I rescued and have cared for and medicated, deflead, dewormed, etc on my own. I've fostered for years always had success caring for animals, i do not have proper tools and amniotic fluids I need to care for my cat on my own because I'm not currently fostering so I call to set us an appointment and actually get made fun of on the phone by the receptionist. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? I know exactly what needs to be done I just don't have what i need to do it, would've been one of the easiest vet visits ever, wound up taking me business to Banfield where my baby got the attention he deserved and he's doing great. I planned on asking about prices for anual shots but no way I'll be spending my money here. This place is a joke, don't waste your time or money here. Plus the information i was given over the phone was false info... and said in such a rude aggressive tone. I want to be clear I have no issue with the vet at this clinic but because of the horrible service and rude front desk woman I will never spend money here. It's probably time to weed out some staff, seeing as I'm not the only one complaining about her on these reviews. Read Less

LITERALLY THE BIGGEST HASSLE TO GET PRESCRIPTIONS FILLED AND OFFICE MANAGE IS SO RUDE.While trying to figure out why my pets 1800 pet meds prescriptions were denied, I had the worst experience. In Texas heart worm tests are only required ever 2 years for dogs. I got a test in January 2016 for my 9 year old dog. We move to NYC. I select this vet based off location. We take our dog to get her annual shots and such in January of 2017. I give them her records from past vet and they keep a copy. Everything is good, she gets shots and such and we go over everything with the vet. The vet asks about heart worm status and I tell her all the info (on preventative since we had her, never missed, tested last year, etc, etc). Tell us we can order through 1800 pet meds anything we need and they'll just approved prescriptions. Fast forward to now and i need to get refills on her Proin, Heart Guard and Flea and Tick meds. So I order all 3 prescriptions for a 6 month supply. All 3 get denied. So i call my vet and am told that they can't approve the Heart Guard because she was never tested. I ask "why was she not requested to have a heart worm test done if that is required by them". And am very rudely explained that "there would be no reason for them to if she is 10, had a test last year, has been on preventative all her life, and has never missed a pill". So I ask then why won't she be approved for the prescription. Office manager says "because we require a once a year test". so again i ask again why i wasn't told this and offered a test. and she changes her backing to the fact that they don't know my dogs history. I explain that i gave her all my dogs records and Office Manager starts half way yelling that she "wouldn't know that because she doesn't have that in front of her"....not sure how that's my fault as she pulled up my dog's file so apparently they lost her records? Not real sure. So i ask if she can atleast approve the other 2 prescriptions and she says she already did. I hang upThen i call back 1800 pet meds and they say there is a refill already in the system for the heart guard from my Texas vet so won't need this vets permission after all. But says the office manager at Bed Stue only approved the Proin and denied the flea and tick prescription, too. I ask them to contact the vet and 1800 pet meds says no problem. I also try to contact the vet back to give them the heads up and only get busy tone for 4 attempts within an hour so give up on my end. Fast forward 3 hours later and Pet Meds calls me back saying they can't get anyone to pick up at the vets office. Confirms # with me. So I call the vet back and get the same rude office manager who remember me from earlier when i tell her and ask if she knows the situation. So i tell her that i don't need her approval for the next guard anymore but ask why she denied the flea and tick, too. and she comes up with this really confusing story about how I should use my Texas vet and how 1800 pet meds is in the wrong and stupid. I explain how they didn't need to contact my Texas vet as the heart guard was already in the system with a refill authorization and that's why i still needed this vets permission for my other two prescriptions. Then she starts telling me that i need to stop doing 1800 pet meds job and have them do theirs and that if they contact her it'll be approved. I explain how they have been trying to contact her all day and haven't gotten through (just relaying info) so ask if they should try to fax or call her. She starts yelling at me at this point saying how she's been there all day and that they have not tried to call and that this isn't something i should be taking care of. and then somehow decided it's necessary to accuse me that i'm trying to get her to sign off the the heart guard under my Texas vets name and I'm like what are you talking about. Anyway I call back 1800 pet meds, AGAIN, and ask them to try calling the vet again just for the prescription of the flea and tick so as to not confused this ignorant, incompetent, rude office manager. Anyways, I originally called at 10 am...it is now 3 pm. and she still hasn't approved the meds. I have no problems with the vets....actually quite like them....but i will NEVER be going back to this vet because of your "customer service" representative who yells are your customers for simple requests for them to do their jobs. I'm sorry but that's not how your treat a customer...esp. when a basic yearly check up ran over $200 (and that obvi didn't even include a heart worm test which i was informed would be $40 today). Not sure what a vets office thinks they are for if not to allow you the basics needs of a yearly appoint. Also 90% sure i asked for a heart worm test, too, but I'm not 100% sure so didn't even bring that up in this complaint. Suggest to the vets: Fire whoever your "office manager" is 9.22.17 Read Less

Believe the reviews. Don't make the mistakes I've made twice now. My lil pup and I waited over an hour to be seen today after we called to make an appt this morning and they told us to just walk in before 12... Why? Why not just let me make an appt for tomorrow? Nobody at the front desk for 5 or 6 mins when I walked in, rude tudes, finally after an hour and a half in that tiny waiting room, I walked out. Waste of my life. Last time I came here, I walked out with an over $500 bill. My dog had swollen lymphnodes-- an infection and yet they recommended we get an x-ray to make sure he didn't have cancer... he is a 1 year old dog! He does not have cancer! Why not do the blood work first to see if he has an infection and then do an xray if that wasn't it? It was my first time at a vet's office with my new dog and I felt that they were taking advantage of me.I gave two stars because I really liked the male nurse. Very friendly and helpful. BEWARE.  (I normally do not write things like this but I really feel the need to warn others.)Front Desk-Kelsey was fine, she was nice and even picked the poop out of my cat carrier for my kitten that was frightened out of her mind.  It was her first vet visit.   Kelsey was soft spoken but it looked like she cared at least.LUCY Rodriguez - Completely unsympathetic and one of the rudest people I've ever met.  She came out with an attitude before anything happened?  I was so confused why she spoke to me so condescendingly.  You work at a vet office and I'm bringing in my stray for her first check up, basically a first time parent, have a heart Lucy.  She snarked at me a few times, "fill this out or we'll be here forever, and handed me an empty form."  I asked her a few questions about what is absolutely necessary and what isn't because the prices were COMPLETELY DIFFERENT over the phone, I was quoted 185 and came here and there was an extra charge for 87 (AIDs test) and fecal test (30), I would have been prepared to pay that if they had just told me over the phone.  Lucy had a chip on her shoulder from what, I don't know but BEWARE BEWARE BEWARE. She will treat you like you're uneducated and beneath her... and funny part is...FOR NO REASON.Then they went to say, oh maybe you didn't tell the person over the phone that it was a stray... um what?? that's literally the FIRST THING I said when they had picked up the phone - I found a stray off the street, she needs to be checked.Dr. P.  -  I won't blame her, she came out with pet hairs everywhere, could tell she was having a day also but same thing, no sympathy at all.  Didn't want to explain the prices and why they were different than over the phone.  No realigning with me whatsoever.  I planned this visit a while back and was in on my day off from work.  She even said "I'm busy, I gotta get back" before we even really talked... No idea why she had such an attitude either.Completely unapologetic about misinforming.  I was so upset, I decided to not have the visit there.I had to call around to make my pet another vet visit because regardless, I needed to get her checked to make sure she's ok.  LUCY even called the cops on me wanting to force me out immediately, intimidating me a few times for what??? Because I wanted to stay in the AC so my kitten doesn't die from the heat???? Get outta here.  You work at a vet place, have a heart for animals.  I took my sweet ol time getting pet insurance for my pet, sorted out a new pet visit at a place that had a higher rating, and took an uber home, it was fine in the end.  Of course the cops didn't come... lol, I wasn't even intimidated because I was even sure they would be taken a back from how rude Lucy was....I took a chance with this place and I should have believed the reviews.... what a shame. They will rip you off any chance you get.  Straight up RUDE. Be very careful with this place, especially Dr. Pruden. If you have a cat with feline diabetes, she only prescribes one course of treatment and will refuse to treat your cat if you as the owner decide to keep the animal on insulin. I tried her way for a while, my cat seemed to be doing well, then he stopped eating one day. Her response was to go pick up some different food. I took him to the animal hospital and my cat has ketosis in his urine (possibly from taking him off the insulin too quickly) and almost died. When she got word of this, she refused to continue to see him if I kept him on the insulin. This woman is an animal herself. Read Less

This dirty little office is staffed with rude and inefficient staff and a vet who was wrong about everything in her examinationMy first visit I waited almost half an hour before anyone paid attention to me, the technician was too busy arguing with a customer who is suing them.   Again today again there was  along wait, and when i asked how late they were running I got reprimanded for having the audacity to inquire. The doctor was fine - though she kept fixating on the strangest things.  For example she kept insisting the food I feed my cats wasn't good (its been recommended and approved by several vets) and she insisted I was a smoker or burned incense (actually cat's eyes were a little gunky because she was a recent rescue) and used plastic dishes (they are stainless steel)- none of which is true.  All of which seemed just a little quirky but in retrospect I wonder whether her diagnosis of more significant issues would be similarly off kilter.Plus they kept me waiting an extra 15 minutes after our first appointment while they tried, unsuccessfully, to give me the paperwork for our visit.I just couldn't recommend them to anyone Read Less

My previous visits with dog Sandy were rated 5 stars. This time I brought my 8 weeks foster kitten Velvet for a second opinion regarding severe eye condition before making a final decision with the shelter about surgery. Dr. Prudent was on medical leave and the sub vet was excellent. However, I can't get the medical record of the visit! Since they couldn't give it right away, the front desk promised to email it. I called later to remind, next day I walked in person and was denied. I begged, asked nicely and angrily-they didn't care. Ladies, this is not a broken nail problem, this is severe eye condition which needs a surgery! And I need the record urgently, not in a week, a month or a year! In case you didn't know how to attach a document to email, I came in person to pick it up. If you don't know how to press a print bottom, I could have shown. If you had no paper or working printer, I could have taken a snapshot with my phone! Do you have a heart at all? I wanted to notify dr. Prudent of what is going on during her absence, but was denied a number. I'm too upset to ever come back to this office unless I hear from others that the front desk personnel have changed or their attitude to pets and their owners (fosters, in my case) has changed. This is unacceptable, inexcusable and simply WRONG! Shame on you, Lucy and Vanessa! Read Less

Bedford Stuyvesant Veterinary Clinic

Brooklyn, New York
(38)
1403 Fulton St
Brooklyn New York 11216

Read Less

Read Less

Read Less

My review is based only on seeing the place. I didn't stay to have my cat seen. The place is seriously a dump. My expectations aren't ridiculously high but if they can't keep the front area even somewhat presentable, are they keeping the back area hygienic and up to code? It was dusty, dirty, hadn't been swept in who knows how long and the furniture is actually falling apart. I started to be concerned, sat in the waiting area for 25 minutes reading some reviews, and left. They didn't call to ask if I was coming back. Read Less

Read Less

Dr. Pruden and Lucy are very attentive! Our 15-year old cat was very sick and they helped nurse him back to great health. I've called them so many times with a thousand questions and they've been so gracious to answer them and give us some peace. They have taken him at a moment's notice when we were concerned. He has even had to stay for 2 days when it was serious. We were given updates several times each day. We would highly recommend this clinic for your pet's needs!

Overpriced, dishonest, dirty, and rude describes this place.  My boyfriend and I were confidently quoted $230 on the phone to give our cat a checkup among other things.  When it was time to pay they tried to bill us OVER 450 DOLLARS!  Even worse the manager Lucy was rude and said it was MY FAULT when i disputed the charges. Unfortunately if you read the reviews we're not the first people they've tried this on.  The only positives were the doctor and assistant who both did a great job and were very friendly.  Unfortunately our experience was so bad that this doesn't matter.  I will be returning to talk to the owner soon (hopefully she is more reasonable) but if not we are considering legal options. But overall, not a good experience. Read Less

Horrible service, HORRIBLE EVERYTHING.  DO NOT GO HERE.

Read Less
