When my dog was a puppy, I noticed some unusual behavior, he seemed lethargic and was having difficulty standing up. Rather than worry, I decided to have him checked by a Veternarian . Not knowing where to bring him I randomly decided on Fifth Avenue Veterinary Hospital.
I was immediately pleased with the staff, Evelyn is a pleasure. I went into the examination room, Dr. Appel listened to everything I had observed; then examined my dog. He told me my dog had a high temperature, could not move his neck and his balance was off. He advised me of the test he wanted to do. I agreed. I wanted to know approximately what the cost would be. I didn't want any misunderstanding when I returned to pay the bill.
Dr. Appel called me and asked me to come to the office. He told me he believed my dog had Spinal Meningitis. Dr, Appel told me I should take my dog to a Neurologist. He said he did not feel qualified to treat this disease. I found an animal hospital that had a Neurologist on staff. Dr. Appel's diagnosis was correct.
I often have thought Dr. Appel could have strung me along telling me he could treat my dog and made the $8,000.00 I had to pay to the hospital. I would have been an easy target. To this day I appreciate his honesty and concern that my dog received the proper treatment.
The next experience I had with Dr. Appel was when my dog had gotten into some poison. I called the doctor at 9:00 P.M. on a Sunday He told me to give my dog two tsp of hydrogen peroxide, it worked within 2 minutes. Dr. Appel told there was a medication that would help; I went to an all-night pharmacy in Brooklyn, he advised me to call the pharmacy to make sure the medicine was available
I picked it up from the pharmacy, gave it to my dog, and he was fine. I went to the doctor's office in the morning. I showed the package my dog had got into to Dr. Appel. I wanted him to see the ingredients.
He told me there was one ingredient he was not familiar with; (another honesty on Dr. Appel’s part) he called Animal Poison Control, it was not harmful, no further treatment was necessary. That phone call prevented my dog from having to go through any other treatment. It surprised me that he took the time to check everything Dr. Appel told me to do over the phone worked.
If Dr. Appel does blood work or any test on your animal he always calls you with the results. You never have to call him. Oh, if only all doctors did that.
If I have to wait I don’t mind, if he is giving time to another animal I am sure he will do the same when I bring my dog in. He won’t rush , he takes the time to explain. He never chats with the owners, only if it’s in regard to their animals. Read Less
