Dr. Keshner can come off as rude and abrupt but thats because he loves animals and cannot hide his contempt for an owner when they wait until the animal is in very bad shape to bring them in. I am guilty of this, and full of regret that i waited to bring my Milo in. Now he is fighting for his life and he may not survive but they gave proper treatment and responded to all of my phone calls in following days most professionally. The only thing negative i can say is that they didnt suggest i take home i.v. fluids for his battle. I requested them and Dr. Keshner agreed and seemed much nicer now that he knew i was advocating for my animal's care. I hope Milo makes it. :( Read Less

I went here last year but forgot to leave a review, so I'm writing this review with a foggy memory as I've been quite busy since that visit. My cat was spayed here and she's such a sweetheart after getting fixed. I thought at first that the doctor was a little rough on her initially but I later realized it's because she doesn't get to visit the veterinarian often enough. She becomes a lot more manageable with frequent visits, plus I get to find out if she has any additional health concerns. Frequent visits are helpful on so many levels! I can rest assured that she's doing well only with frequent doctor's visits. Read Less

I recently took my cat and saw Dr. Keshner. It was my 2nd time at this office and first time with him. After providing very, very thorough history of my cat, without doing ANY tests, Dr. Keshner concluded that my cat has behavioral issues and prescribed Prozac. I was surprised to hear that my cat was anxious and needed this medicine. My online researched led me to believe my cat has possible UTI or required blood and urine tests. I suggested he simply said no. My visit costs me over $300. Less than a week later, I had to take my cat to an emergency Vet visit and after a simple urine test, we were informed he has UTI. This visit costs another $150. Bottom line, I am not going back to this office. Read Less

I have been taking my pets to Animal Haven for close to a decade.  I would never go anywhere else.  Frankly I'm surprised by some of the negative reviews posted here, so much so that to me it seems a campaign by some disgruntled former employee!  I just can't believe that it is the same place that I trust for the welfare of my pets!I find Dr. Keshner to be wonderful.  If you want a fantastic diagnostician he is your guy.  He is honest and straightfoward, and I trust his judgement, diagnosis' and establishment completely.  He is not a cootchie coo kind a fellow.  Do you want validation that yours is the most adorable and exceptional cat or dog, or an accurate assessment of your pet's medical condition?  That said, I find him to be humurous, and compassionate, completely professional and experienced. By the way, the staff will fawn and coo over your pet, leaving Dr. K to do the important stuff. The staff is great.  Many have been there as long as I have been a client and that speaks volumes!I nave no complaints regarding the wait time, either for getting an appointment or waiting to be seen.  I find the pricing to be quite on par with other veterinary services in the boro.  I have been living in Brooklyn for over thirty years and have taken my cats and dogs to at least a dozen different veterinary establishments, so I have quite a bit of experience regarding the fees and practices.  I always seem to have six cats and a dog at any given point in my life, so I feel that I am no stranger to this rodeo.  If you are comfortable with finding a bargain for your pet's care and well being, that is your perogative.  I'm dumbfounded by the complaints of the various types of testing!!!  REALLY?!? I mean REALLY?!?  That just makes no sense. Owning pets comes with responsibilities and expenses, that is the reality.  Personally, I believe in caring for my pets as well as possible.  I am completely confident when I bring one of my pets to Dr. Keshner. Why people are complaining that the place is dirty and smelly is absolutely absurd!  With six cats and a dog I have been there alot, and have never, ever found this to be true.  As I said earlier, there appears to be a vendetta afoot.I would also like to add that I am a half hour car ride away from Pet Haven.  Although there are many vets much more convemient, I make the trip knowing my pets are in excellent hands. I have been coming to pet haven for almost  5 years.  I adopted a very sick dog from the shelter and they recommended pet haven. I knew my new woof woof Opehelia didn't have a long life expectancy being her condition, but I wanted to make what little time she had left comfortable  and happy. Dr. Sola and Dr. Keshner exceeded my expectations . They were both thorough, consistent and fair in pricing. I have been to several vets for all three of my dogs, and since meeting dr. Keshner and Staff I no longer need to search. I read some of the reviews on here and can't help but shake my head. I'm sorry they had those experiences, I'm sure it was very real for them.  However I have been to pet haven at least 30 times in 4 now going on 5 years.  Vets in general are not cheap, but thats the price you pay for having amimals.  It is what it is and Pet haven in my expierence has been  more than fair .They are clean, the staff is exceptional and always make you feel welcome and like family. I understand that Dr. Keshner may not be all warm and fuzzy at first meeting, but give him a shot. He really is a tremendous vet, knowledgeable , smart and thorough. Once he warms up, you'll see just how great of a person and vet he is. Good luck all! Read Less

I cannot express enough displeasure with this place.  We saved a kitten off the street last week, and brought him to Sean Casey (who does great work btw) before we decided to keep him.  All of the initial screening and neuter was performed at Pet Haven.  When I received the vet records to bring to our regular vet, they were incomplete and did not note the FIV test, causing us to have to pay to get another one at our vet.  Not even close to the worst thing.  Our vet questioned why he was not able to see an incision mark and asked me to take him back to the attending surgeon to go over a few things, Dr Colon.  She called me and we set an appointment for me to see her.  When I got there, she was not in and instead we saw Dr Keschner.  I have never in all my years seen a person with such horrible bedside manner, vet or human doctor.  Even the vet tech looked mortified with the way in which he manhandled the kitten, and I was beyond uncomfortable the whole time.  The cat had a urinary issue and after seeing Dr Keschner it became much worse, and the kitten is now in the hospital in Carrol Gardens due to a torn urethra.  The attending vet would not go as far as to lay blame on anyone, but in all the looking up I have done it seems quite likely that a tear like this was caused by expressing a bladder that should have been drained in another fashion (by needle for example, like 2 other vets have now done) if the stream was coming out so thin and the cat was protesting so much.  So I cannot for sure say for a fact that the problem was more exacerbated by this clinic, I for sure can say that it was not helped, and the manner of the attending doctor there was beyond unacceptable.  This man should retire to an island far away where there are no animals for him to mishandle.  If you are tired of work, stop working.  Don't continue to harm the loved ones of others.Go anywhere else if you care at all about your pets. I've lived in the neighborhood most of my life and always saw this establishment in passing. I usually take my pets to another vet that my sister referred me to that I ended up liking. I chose to come here out of my own will without checking reviews because my vet wasn't in town and this place was another close establishment with long standing in the neighborhood. A little over two weeks ago on a Saturday I took my cat here to get her ingrown claw removed from her pad. I don't remember her name, but the doctor had blonde hair in a ponytail and some type of European accent(I think it was Swedish). Anyways, she clipped my cat's claws without a problem. The issue was with the add ons that were completely unnecessary. I noticed that she wasn't going to stitch or put a cast on my cats paw to protect the wound from getting infected so I asked how it would heal. She said she wanted the wound to dry up a bit and prescribed her antibiotics and said that my cat should have a head guard to keep her from licking her wound. It made no logical sense whatsoever when she could've easily put on a cast. Instead she just wanted to charge an extra $20 to my bill. Another thing, she tried to convince me to get my cat's teeth cleaned and  I told her I was only there for the claw clipping as I didn't have much money. After reading some of the horror stories in the reviews I thank God I didn't have the money to do it because there was NO WAY I would've let them put my cat under. She also weighed my cat for a second time(the first time was when we first came in the checkup room) to prepare the right amount of antibiotics. At first I heard her call out to her veterinary aide and ask how much my cat was and he made up my cat's weight and said "10lbs". I made him check again and the scale said 7.9lbs. Who does that just to get more money?! The antibiotics also cost an arm and a leg- just for a small ingrown nail!! Rewind a little bit to a few days earlier when I called to make the appointment and asked the receptionist for an estimate of how much to bring with me. I explained to her my cat's situation me she told me "no more than $100 but $70 should be fine". My actual bill came up to around $200. Just to clarify, I do not blame the receptionist at all since she had no clue what would go on. I explained to the doctor that I had no money to pay for the entire bill and she said everything was due the same day. What?! You can't just give someone a bill like that an always expect for them to pay right away. So I was practically forced to applying for care credit, which I got approved for, thankfully. By day 4 out of 7, I ended up taking the head guard off of my cat because she couldn't fit her head properly into any size bowl I tried to put her food in. She starved for nearly 4 days!! Thank goodness she is better now and her wound did not get infected. Please avoid at all costs!! Read Less

He was ready to start there and then with Xrays and whatnot. We decided to wait on the decision. DO NOT BRING YOUR PET HERE!If I could give no stars for this animal hospital I would.  I brought my dog here one day because she was constipated. Turns out the moment I got there my dog decided to poop,  so problem solved. However since I made the trip there I decided to get my dog checked. My dog got blood work done and the Vet said all of her tests came back fine. She was perfectly healthy. The only concern was that she had rotting on some of her teeth. The vet said they could be removed, not out of necessity but for the comfortability of my dog. So since her blood work was good I gave the go ahead for the extraction. I was told she'd be ready by 4pm that day.At 4pm I get a call from the vet as I am parking in their lot saying that my dog died on the table. When I ran inside the vet said she had no clue what happened. She said it must have been a bad heart. Mind you, the blood work was fine just that morning. Regardless,  I understand that things happen so despite my anger I left with my now deceased dog and all of her paperwork with the intention of cremating her and trying to move on.As I drove home my daughter,  who was hysterically crying over the loss (despite me telling her to calm down because she was 7 months pregnant), began reviewing the paperwork. It stated that as the vet yanked out her tooth the dogs jaw snapped and she died on the table after the snap. My daughter also found that based on the time stamp the dog died at 2 PM but I was not called until 4!I drove back the next day and confronted the vet about why she lied about the cause of death and she had the nerve to say the snapped jaw was normal. It happens to dogs all the time. That it couldn't possibly be the reason. SHE WAS SERIOUS! She just couldn't admit that she yanked too hard and snapped the jaw of an otherwise healthy dog. In any case, as I pursue action against this hospital I urge you to stay away if you love your pets. I have confirmed reports from other vets that the snap is not normal and that the death was either caused by shock from the snap or from a blood clot formed once trauma happened to the bone, which could cause cardiac arrest. For the sake of the one star, I will say that the receptionist was accommodating through this ordeal, but this entire facility is filled with incompetent vets who tried to cover up an error that had they admitted to, I would have accepted and moved on. Hopefully this post saves other healthy pets from unfortunate accidents. Read Less

Let me just say that i was never a fan for Pet Haven Animal Hospital.I won' t really explain much as my complaints are similar with those who didn't like the services. Know that I have switched to Park Slope Veterinary Center, they treat my dog way better. Recently my sister's cat became so ill that they really gave up on him after the blood tests. They were recommending my sister to put him to sleep. So I recommend my sister to switch to Park Slope Veterinary Center. And he is just living life again running around. He is a 14 year old cat with so much energy, he has also lost weight on the new food he was put on by Park Slope Veterinary Center to an ideal weight. He was considered obese before (he was eating Purina Veterinary Diets UR St/Ox Urinary Formula Dry Cat Food for many years)I think if you got your child a dog or a cat and you are trying to teach them how to be responsible in taking care of their pet, I wouldn't recommend you bringing them here. My sister would tell me my dog was mine so she would take me to the vet with my dog to see what I would have to do when I am on my own with my dog. The experience wasn't very pleasant. I was afraid of the veterinarians and they made me feel like I was wasting their time, my sister is naturally assertive with questions so she wouldn't budge until she got answers. She did teach me to be assertive. They did remodel the place, but it still has the same energy I remember from when I was 12. Read Less

What an awful veterinary practice. I have not been there for four years due to my terrible experiences with the entire staff. A veterinarian who is no longer there, who was the best vet there at the time, gave my dog bladder stones by refusing to culture her urine even when I asked and instead playing a game of "musical antibiotics." Then they wanted me to put my dog on corn and chicken-fat based food for the rest of her life, and when I refused, a staff member told me "Well then, she will keep getting sick." (Now she's on cranberry pills and has never had the problem again.) At one point, when I took her in because she couldn't keep food down and I was scared, Keschner actually said to me, "Do you WANT your dog to die?" Yeah, I want my dog to die... That's why I brought her to a vet. Idiot. Then he tried to convince me that I had to leave her there overnight, even though no one would be there if anything happened! I noticed Timmy my flat face cat throwing up for a few days. While I know these cats have more than the usual amount of throwing up issues, I was so nervous and quickly brought him to Pet Haven to see Dr. Keschner. The doctor quickly calmed me down and thoroughly evaluated Timmy. Using his scopes he found the cat had reflux disease and gave us medicines and a new diet to take home. I am very impressed of his treatment because Timmy hasn't thrown up since. He appears a lot more relaxed and even the shine to his fur coat came back. He also now eat pumpkin which has really helped with his diet. I will definitely start taking my cat here for routine exams and recommend Pet Haven Animal Hospital to anyone who wants great service and care in Brooklyn. Read Less

I went to Pet Haven only because my friend who was petsitting for me brought my cat in because she had been coughing and not eating.  The doctor apparently gave her a shot of some kind and charged just under 300 and said that should take care of it.  2 weeks later he takes her in again because she had not stopped coughing.  He gave her the same shot and charged him again and told him to come back in 2 weeks if it hadn't cleared up.  He also told my friend that her teeth were horrible and that she needed all of these teeth extracted.  I found that really strange as my vet is one of the top vets in the country AND has a stellar dental doctor who had extracted some of her teeth in the past and she has only gotten great results with teeth since then.  I get back into the city from being away and take my cat BACK to him because she is still coughing and I wanted to ask him a slew of questions.  Firstly while I was in the waiting room a vet assistant came out and said what should I do with this F-ing cat?  They apparently didn't realize anyone was in the waiting room.  Then when I went back into the room it just revealed how much this place seemed to actually hate animals.  He was, without testing,(and such insane prices!!) going to give her yet ANOTHER shot and send her away.  I also asked him about her teeth and he checked and said yes, that she needed all of these teeth pulled.  When I told him that she had extractions from Hope Vet and great results ever since, he then said that actually her teeth were better now than a few weeks ago.  Oh Really :/Lastly, I asked him to trim my cats claws.  He jerked her up and roughly grabbed her get and pulled and started clipping really close to the nerve so that it scared me how rough he was and she almost bit him.  He then threw her on the floor and went out saying my cat bit him and got his assistant to come in and hold her while he was still rough with her.  I was standing there and my cat did not, in fact, bite him.  I was standing there about in tears so angry that he and his staff clearly do not like animals to the point that he would have really taken my cat's perfectly healthy teeth out.  And charged the price of a car, no doubt.  I immediately got in at Park Slope Veterinary Center on 4th Ave and she tested my cat, gave her proper antibiotics which cleared her all up in 2 days flat and told me that my cat's teeth were in great condition.  All for a great, lower-than-Brooklyn-average price!!I have been involved with working with cat groups and feral cats since this and also have heard horror stories from different people that have gone to Pet Haven as well.  He way over ear tips feral cats which is actually very cruel.  Please, if you want a great, caring and inexpensive vet in the area please take your pet to Dr. Szacki at Park Slope Vet Center or Hope Vet on Atlantic (though pricier, still top notch).  Pet Haven deserves to be investigated and shut down for good! Sean Casey works with Pet Haven, so we were given the first vet visit free of cost (this does not include the shots).Although Dr. Keshner is not the world's friendliest person, he was not mean or rude. His vet tech on the other hand is the sweetest lady! She coo-ed over my new kitten and informed me how handsome he would be. The visits were short and easy. The 3rd time I went was for a second kitten adopted in January of 2013. She was also adopted from Sean Casey, so I opted to stick with the same vet. This time I had Dr. Caruso. She was very very sweet. Both of my kittens are perfectly healthy, but I know if anything goes wrong, I would take them to Pet Haven without hesitation. Read Less

DON'T LET IT HAPPEN TO YOU! DON'T GO TO THIS MAN OR PET HAVEN ANIMAL HOSPITAL IN BROOKLYN! When you read reviews on the internet you think, eh...who knows if this is true? I can tell you IT IS TRUE THAT YOU SHOULD KEEP YOUR PETS FAR AWAY FROM DR. MICHAEL KESCHNER!!! FIRST - SO THEY DON'T DIE. SECOND - SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH A BAD AND INAPPROPRIATE ATTITUDE FROM A MAN WHO IS SUPPOSED TO BE A PROFESSIONAL. I don't care how many years someone claims to be helping animals. It goes much deeper than that. Things happen in life - yes, but when you deal with someone who is negligent from the start you are most definitely going to end up with an infected or dead animal. This is the first time I am ever writing a review about anyone. I am doing this because I am PASSIONATE about keeping animals safe from harm. A pet that was in our lives for many years and walked into his place of business in perfect health should not be dead soon afterward. Unfortunately I did not see all the other bad reviews about Dr. Keschner until now. I wish I had read them BEFORE going to him. You don't know me, that is true but do yourself, your friends, family and the innocent animals of the world a HUGE FAVOR by NEVER going to DR. KESCHNER! It's not worth it to take that chance!!!!! Last week (11/4), my coworker and I found a domesticated parakeet; while it was wounded and on the ground, it approached us and was very alert. We put it in a box and brought it to the vet who takes care of my dog. My vet's office then referred us to Pet Haven as they deal more regularly with birds (many others don't for sanitary purposes). After driving around with the bird, it's state began to deteriorate. As we were entering Pet Haven, all of the people waiting in the lobby heard me say that I thought it just died in my hands and were equally saddened as my friend and I. When approaching the receptionist's desk, the receptionist, Carmella(?), was doing paperwork with her back to us and did not even turn to see that we were holding the bird, even after we said we thought it was dying or just died. She held her hand up rudely behind her but then finally turned and snatched the bird out of my hands. She was extremely cold, flopping the parakeet back and forth between her hands just saying ''well, it sure doesn't look good'' before dropping it in a box. We asked for Dr. Keschner just to make sure there wasn't anything more we could do for it; instead, one of the two men standing behind the receptionist's desk took the box and picked up the bird that was now clearly dead as it was already becoming stiff. He mocked us by smirking and putting the bird up to his ear, pretending to listen to it's heartbeat. He tossed it back in the box saying - right in front of us and in earshot of the lobby - ""who cares, it's just a bird."" He didn't even know that it wasn't our pet. When we asked who this person was, we were told it was Dr. Keschner's son, Jonathan. We walked out in disbelief after the box was tossed aside (into the garbage, I am assuming). Everyone in the lobby watched us walk out in horror as they continued to mock us over caring for ""just a bird"" who clearly belonged to someone. These were the most insensitive individuals I have ever encountered in a field which requires compassion for other living things. They even have a mocking tone in their own fake CitySearch review about a so-called ""Snuggles""? ""Many people who go to vet hospitals are not the sanest of people, and their critiques seem outlandish and inaccurate."" All of the reviews I've found (not written by their own staff) however, are by my guess more than accurate. Not coincidentally, either, they all have the same exact message: THIS PLACE IS DISGUSTING? and I made sure to tell my vet not to refer them to anyone ever again. Read Less

Today, I took a very sick cat from an old neighbor that is no longer able to take care. The truth is that the age was closer to 20 and that it has been spayed. The cat was under-nourished, dehydrated and with an eye that had to be remove. Avoid this facility. They operate out of a dilapidated building next to a dilapidated gas station. The sanitary conditions are horrendous. Buckets of biohazard materials sitting around (on closer inspection, or I wouldve avoided this place), unclean surfaces and extremely bad manners. They have some regular customers they may care for, but they kiIl a lot of animals by rushing them through non sterile surgeries or sitting them *while dying* on the sidelines to take care of the neighbors animals that they know. They will let people adopt sick kittens, they once placed contageous animals in a viewing cage in the waiting room, other animals get sick and guess what, they need expensive surgery. This is like a tire repair place putting tacks in the roadway, it happens. Avoid this place. They kiIled my pet by performing standard spay surgery and causing massive internal infection. They wanted more money to fix the infection and ultimately kiIled her after sticking needles into all four legs, her neck and sides. These positive reviews were written by their staff. This place and the vets working in it need to have their license taken from them. Read Less

Read Less

Staff never on time. Smells like pee, and dirty. Hard to  understand the vet, language barrier. Most of the visits there have been tests and lab work done to my puppy.. Who is 100% healthy .. All tests and labs have been done without my acknowledgment, they don't even bother to ask or tell you what they will be skinny , they just do sh*t to your pets and then slap you with a bill in the end.    I have a 3 year old yorkie who I take VERY good care of, I've only taken him there for annual check ups... Which always end up being 3 too $400 bill..  They denied me if purchasing heart worm prevention medication for my puppy, they won't sell you the meds unless you make an app and pay $58 for the dr visit, then get slapped with this and that kinds of tests. I have stopped taking my puppy here, I've found another vet in my area who have rave reviews and high recommendations from people I know. Read Less

He was pretty good and actually suggested a good cure for my greyhound's eyes.Seen Dr Keschner another time with my limping greyhound, and if there were negative stars I would give them here. His manners were not friendly at all (even for New York). He was unsure about the cause of the pain on the paw, but he was sure that we needed to amputate the dog's digit (for some thousand of dollars towards him). He was ready to start there and then with Xrays and whatnot. We decided to wait on the decision. As soon as we were home my wife googled the issue, turned out it was a corn that we could cure at home for a few bucks.Pay attention! If you go to Pet Haven make sure you DO NOT SEE DR KESCHNER.

Pet Haven Animal Hospital is a great place for your pets. Dr. Keschner is compassionate as is professional. The waiting room is clean and the staff is very good to the pets and their owners. We are using Pet Haven for many years and I can't begin to imagine taking them anywhere else. On occasion, we had to see Dr. Caruso instead of Dr. Keschner. We can't say enough nice things about her bedside manners. John Read Less

Read Less

If I had read these reviews I would not have gone to Pet Haven. I took my dog there for shots and regular checkup, he got a viral infection and nearly died before I took him to another vets.

Today, I took a very sick cat from an old neighbor that is no longer able to take care. In order to protect his identity, I told the staff that I found this cat in my backyard. This cat was examined erroneously. I was told that the age was around 7 and that it was not spayed. The truth is that the age was closer to 20 and that it has been spayed. The cat was under-nourished, dehydrated and with an eye that had to be remove. This people were willing to torture this poor soul with all kind of surgery in order to charge me close to $2000, while the best thing was to put it to sleep. Again, they do not have the best interest of the animal. Read Less

I took my parrot to Dr. Keschner for a regular checkup and everything seemed excellent . He appeared sick so I asked another vet who said to bring him in, this time he has pneumonia and the doctor ran some tests that shows it is pzittacosis and he also has E-coli. They said he probably got it from other sick birds and infected dropplngs probably from unclean cages at the Dr. Keschners. I won't be taking my parrot to Dr. Keschner again. Read Less

Read Less
