Worst experience ever at a Vet. After 6 hours of waiting to see a doctor, had to catch the doctor in the lobby to beg her to look at my dog and she said give me another few hours; at which point we left at 1:30am in the morning. The only 24x7 thing about this place is how long you have to sit there before someone notices you. Save your pets and take them to a capable clinic. Better business bureau is my next stop about the business practices of this place. Read Less

DO NOT take your pet to VERG!  I bought our 2 year shihpoo to VERG because he was throwing up. I thought he could have possible ate something. The first doctor I saw took ex-rays and confirmed that he did in fact ate something. Also pointing out the object in his belly to me in the ex-rays. My first visit was 500.00. For ex-rays and others things she claimed he needed! One day later I took him back because he was still throwing up this doctor said he need blood work and to be underanesthesia and have a tube run down his belly to pull out the object. $2,000. I get the results and NOTHING WAS IN HIS BELLY!!! It was just gas and he has gastritis! Which is common things in dog and I'm sure if I took Zuma to a hospital that wasn't about meeting there monthly goal in dollars and more about the animals this could had been a easy fix! They cut up he belly from shaving it for the procedure and now he has sores and he also now popping blood from running a tube down his belly scraping his intestine!!! $ 2,500 later and Zuma is worst than before!!! I've brought my rescue beagle here twice in the past few months, and I'd certainly recommend this place for emergency care. The staff reacts quickly and have always been polite and knowledgeable. The first time I brought the pup here, she had gotten her paw stuck in the door of my apartment building and it was bleeding all over the place. I brought her to VERG and they cleaned it right up, I only had to wait for a few minutes. No stitches necessary (phew), and I believe they called after to check on how she was doing. That was a nice touch. This morning, the pup was able to grab some food off the ground just as we were starting our walk. Almost immediately, she stopped walking and started clawing at her face. I couldn't see what she had picked up (believe me, I tried), but I could see some blood in her mouth, and she was coughing and trying to chew and it seemed like she may have been starting to choke. I frantically scooped her up and literally ran to VERG. When I got inside, there was a tech in the lobby and I told her my dog might be choking on something - the tech took her straight away, and the receptionist got on the phone and notified other staff members. I was very impressed at how they both jumped into action. Sure enough, the vet came out a few minutes later and showed me the chicken bone they'd pulled out of her mouth. WHY do people think it's acceptable to throw half-eaten chicken wings on the ground??? There are trash cans everywhere??? Yes, it will cost you more than an average vet visit, but that's normal.  I also really appreciate that they allow for payment via PayPal, because I don't usually bring my wallet with me when walking the dog, and that's when these incidents tend to occur.  All of this being said, if your pet has a serious/ongoing condition or something requiring a diagnosis, I'd recommend going to a general care veterinarian - this is an emergency clinic, after all. I've read lots of the negative reviews, and I don't know if I would trust this place with anything major or surgical. If possible, get a second opinion, just like you would for yourself. Read Less

On Saturday 6/1 we had an unfortunate situation with my 6lb Yorkie and our cat who got into a fight and ended with my Yorkie bleeding profusely from the neck (bite).  After calling 3 very near Vets all told me you must go to Emergency.  It was 4pm and the traffic was hell, but we rushed over to VERG after finding it here on Yelp.  It took us 30mins to get there and the moment my hand touched the door handle prior to opening the doors the front desk already had their walkies in hand calling the team to grab my dog.  My bloody clothes and blood filled towel was their 1st alert.  Seconds later ppl came out to grab her and off she went.  I never seen a team move so fast and be so aware.  About 15 mins later a doctor came out to speak to us and give us the scenario.  Another 15-20 mins later she returned and gave us the update which thank goodness was very good and my Yorkie would be ok.  We were sent home with a list of instructions and antibiotics.  Thank you VERG staff for taking care of us immediately and assuring us she was in good hands.  Arriving full of blood and a nervous wreck they quickly calmed us down.  The professionalism and bedside manner was top notch.  I hope to never return for another emergency, but if necessary this is the place I will run to! Another pet came in after us and they took that pet to see the vet BEFORE my dog. Said that that dog was panting heavily so they were concerned. As if we ALL aren't concerned about our dogs - it's an EMERGENCY vet!As I sit here, it's been an hour and a half since she's seen the technician and my dog still has not been taken to see a vet! Also - ignore the responses from that fake "office manager" that is in the comments. I've been to Verg North a few times - always a great experience - until Friday, May 3rd - I brought my 2.5 yr old dog in at 06:30 AM for an eye issue - his eye ulcer ruptured - front desk was great - first nurse (male) was fine - the two ER doctors that came in should have their license revoked - both responded "OMG" when they saw his eye - such a comforting response since I was already a nervous mess - the first one told me she couldn't help because her shift was ending in 10 mins and i'd have to wait until 8am for the next shift - seriously?  The 2nd doctor that came in was just unpleasant - she told me his eye ruptured - which I already knew that - and how bad it looked but there was nothing she could do - told me to make an appt with their eye doctor for a consult who had a waiting list (really?) and if surgery was needed I'd be put on that wait list (are you joking?) when I asked about the chance he could lose his eye she told me do my best to keep it clean and hope for the best - yes - that is what she said - when I told her that wasn't an acceptable answer and that I'd look for another specialist she told me good luck because no eye doctors work in NY Friday, Saturday or Sunday.. FYI - that isn't true..  even though they did nothing beyond a shot for the pain - they gave me drops and billed me $250+ even though they said there was nothing they could do for him.. I did manage to find a doctor who was able to save the eye - to add to this insanity I was running low on one of his meds and just called to ask them if they carried it - such a charming girl answered the phone - would love to know who hired her because both should be fired - she was beyond rude.. find another hospital save yourself and your pet the pain of this joke of a place.. I was referred by our vet as our 3 month old English bulldog got into a massive accident in her left eye. The moment I arrived the preliminary paperwork were all prepped. Shortly a tech took her in to the exam room - took her vitals and all. Moments time the er doctor saw Molly. Thankfully the ophthalmologist was on sight Dr LoPinto assessed her poor eye. We got sent home with antibiotics ointment, gabapentin, carprofen. Sadly Molly's eye has progressively gotten worst (actually an eye infection). I was practically living out of the hospital, after persistently asking for an earlier surgery with Dr LoPinto we were able to get in on Tuesday rather that Thursday. one of our concern was if he had to remove the gland...lucky he was able to repair the laceration and tuck the cherry eye back in. High praise for the vets at Verg, they were very kind and helpful during a stressful situation. I came home on a Sunday afternoon last summer from a long weekend to find that my cat was acting strange and making awful noises. At first I called Verg to get a sense if he was upset with me for being away for a few days or if something was wrong--the person who answered my call was very friendly and let me send videos of him to her. I decided to bring him in, and it turned out poor buddy was blocked up and had crystals in his bladder. I opted to leave him over night and had to pay upfront for his care, which I can understand is an issue but Verg operates differently from the vet's office. I'm fortunate a family member was able to help me out, and if the final cost of care ends up less than your deposit, you will get your money back. The vet at Verg got in touch with me the next day to let me know they unblocked my kitty and I could come see him--I think I ran out the door from work to visit him. My little guy was a bit woozy from pain drugs but he was in much better shape than before. He stayed one more night and then I got to bring him home on Tuesday, with instructions on administering some meds and an antibiotic. It was also recommended that he go on a prescription diet, which he happily has been on since. I don't believe Verg should replace your primary vet, but should be used in a case of emergency. I am so thankful they saved my guy. Read Less

There are two locations, North and South.  I went to South when my older dog was in his last days.  They were extremely caring.I went to North when my other dog was extremely sick.  When we arrived we were immediately separated, then Verg told me it'd be almost $8000 for her to stay in the hospital for a week and be comfortable, but she would probably pass away.  I refused this diagnosis. Then a nurse came back with a $1200 bill saying that they should keep her overnight, but she still would not last more than 24hrs. I refused. After hearing from the doctor that my dog would die and that we should put her down, I said "if she is going to pass away, it won't be here on a metal slab.  Im taking her home to pass with her family."They refused to release my dog. It took me threatening to call the police before they gave back my dog. This took place over 2 months ago.  My dog, my best friend, was given a death sentence by these people, all because of their thirst for money. My dog is alive, healthy, and thriving today.  I can never condone any diagnosis by this establishment since I've experienced, first hand, that their concern is not about your pet, but about the amount of money they can get from you. I wish I could give 0 star to this hospital. My cat was blocked and hospitalized for two days to be "unblocked." When he was discharged and got home, he wasn't able to pee, still blocked. we had to take him back the hospital within a day. And we were billed $2500 each time, the same bill, again, as if we were never seen in this hospital before. And my cat had to be anesthetized again, connected to the catheter again, horrified and traumatized again. Doctors insist calling this "reblock" but I have such hard time experiencing this as two separate incidents. He was home for one night in-between and he wasn't able to pee that night, wasn't eating, wasn't moving. Coming back from the hospital, he was as sick as before he went. It was heartbreaking to watch. Doctors speak a script of five sentences on loop, The script takes away all responsibility from them and leaves no inclination, no preference, no tendency. I was desperately seeking for professional advice to the specific situation, to this cat, but was simply presented with options and their prices, like a menu. One doctor came to the room with the opening line: "As you know, your cat is hard to handle, I can't touch him." The other answered "Now is not a wrong time." when I asked what would be a good timing for surgery. Talked to a manager. She wasn't there to help pet's owner but there to defend. She basically told me the reason why doctors didn't recommend immediate surgery to me was because I look like a person who has financial concerns, even though we paid $5000 already in this place, I guess that's not good enough for them. And in response to all the back and forth we went through, she said: "this is all part of your cat's disease." Hospital is form of authority, of knowledge, skill and experience. We came to hospital seeking for help, but instead, we got suffering, excessive and unnecessary suffering, humiliation, serious financial loss (for nothing). The technicians were nice. Read Less

My dog, Riley, was admitted on January 17th around 10am after he became paraplegic overnight. VERG originally scheduled an MRI/surgery for January 18, their first open slot. At 2pm, Dr. Pastina called me to say that Riley had lost feeling in his hind legs, but that luckily they would be able to move his MRI/surgery up to later that evening from 5-9pm. Dr. Pastina called me after the MRI to update me on the findings, and after the surgery to let me know how it went. She was so communicative, understanding, and articulate. In addition to the responsive front-desk staff and wonderfully kind veterinary nurses, the veterinarian doctors themselves called me every morning to update me on Riley's status. VERG also let me visit Riley every day, for as long as I wanted.Riley was discharged on January 21. The staff at VERG have still been extremely kind and responsive when I call about concerns and issues (e.g. bladder expression). I called around 6pm and 11pm on January 21. During the 11pm call, Dr. Chen offered to let me come in that evening (or the next morning) so someone could show me how to properly express Riley's bladder -- at 11pm! That was so considerate of Riley's comfort and it really helped me feel better about the situation.I will update this review if anything changes, but for now, I am very pleased with not only their veterinary services, but also the communication and sympathy. Very helpful and kind desk staff and clinicians.  My dog had a mass tumor removed from her back leg.  The operation was completed and my dog is back to acting like herself.  For that I am thankful.  The estimate was $3,400.  Final cost (with a recommended check on her spleen) $4,100.  The surgical staff I met with was very patronizing, and after the mass was removed was instructed to meet with an oncologist to discuss how to move forward.  One would think that $4,100 would include treatment options.  Instead, the surgeon stated that there would be another $189 fee, and said that he was "offended" that I was frustrated/confused as to what my next steps should be.  Scare tactics, two surgeons with patronizing tones, and uncertainty after spending what, for a teacher without pet insurance, equals 10 Sunday's teaching as an adjunct, in addition to my full-time job.  Money seems to be their primary concern before keeping the owner fully informed.Feeling frustrated. Update:  It's amazing they have time money to pay someone to reply to Yelp reviews but NOT for more Veterinarians.  It's clear what their priorities are.  To the reply below, thanks for your cookie-cutter message, however it was clear that the staff had NO concern for our cat.  Like I said, they thought it was funny when we got frustrated after 2 hours and left.  You won't change OUR minds about what we experienced firsthand.  We are taking our kitty to our normal Vet but she is still in pain and will be until we can get her in tomorrow afternoon.  People can see through your corporate rubber stamp reply. I brought my cat here after two vet offices recommended that he see urgent care for not eating for about three days and for developing a blue mark on his neck. My family and I brought him to VERG at about 7 am, and he was seen by the overnight doctor quickly but unfortunately, the morning doctor then took over. We waited 3+ hours to see my cat again after he was taken for bloodwork and x-rays and waited almost another hour for him to be discharged. When we met with the morning vet, she did not explain my cat's blood work findings clearly (it felt like she was trying to show off by throwing around as many medical terms as possible for a vet in training who was in the room as well). I asked questions to try to grasp at least some understanding of what she was saying, but she continued to talk in circles and never gave clear or direct answers. The only thing she said clearly was that she wanted my cat to get an ultrasound, but she didn't say where. She also made no mention of the blue mark on my cat's neck. After my cat was discharged my family asked about the blue mark and the morning doctor claimed the overnight doctor didn't mention the mark to her, so she didn't check for it. When we showed the mark to her she waved it away saying he would be fine. I requested a copy of my cat's medical records the day after and saw that the blue mark was noted on his records about three times so how could the morning vet not have known about it? It was also noted that he has gum disease which the vet made NO mention of either. How could we spend nearly 5 hours at a vet and over $600 dollars to not be given a single answer for the issues we brought him in for? I will never take my cat to VERG again and I regret wasting so much money on this place to only leave with more stress and worry over my cat's health. Read Less

I’m a vet tech from out of town when my worst nightmare happened with my little dog. She got bit by a large dog and her eye basically came out of her socket. Victoria, a vet tech, brought her to the doctor immediately. Dr. Goodman was very responsive, spoke to me in a clear way (those who are vet techs know that when it comes to your own pet, everything can go in one ear and out the other), and they were extremely friendly and caring. It was obvious they loved my little girl and cared for her the same as I would. I would go back there every time I have an emergency (as much as I like seeing you guys, let’s keep the emergencies with my pets at a minimum 😉). Thank you a million times!! Read Less

This vet ER is absolutely wonderful. It’s super clean, the staff are extremely polite and empathetic. They are true animal lovers and have great bedside manner. Yesterday I brought in my 14 year old cat because the left side of her face was swollen. We were immediately taken into an exam room to have vitals taken by a nurse. There was a bit of a wait for a doctor, but I wouldn’t say it was excessive, maybe about 30-40 min (they did advise it could be up to an hour). When the doctor came to speak with us she was extremely patient and informative. She advised that it was a tooth abscess And would need to see a reg vet for follow up because ER doesn’t treat dental work. She answered all our questions and was very thorough with her answers. She expressed the need to put our cat on antibiotics and see the vet for follow up. I didn’t want to purchase the entire antibiotic treatment from the ER because I was going to see the vet the following morning and maybe the vet would need to perform ER surgery so she suggested to give the first dose of antibiotics right there and we could purchase the rest from our doctor. She also sent in a tech to come in and show us how to administer the medication. The price for the visit I believe is reasonable. It was $110 for the visit without any testing and $6 for a dose of antibiotics. Compared to a vet where a visit is about $70-75 for an ER visit I believe the extra $30 is an extremely reasonable price. If only the human ER rooms were as a pleasant experience as this animal one are! UPDATE 2 days following the ER visit, one of the doctors from the ER called to follow up and see how my cat was doing and to make sure everything ok. I’m amazed with the service! Read Less

I had a 5 yr old male cat that had lost mobility in hi back legs over night with being fine the night before. When I brought him in they took us in immediately & doc came in, her name, have her on my records but just need to get this out! I mean she took him from me, took 15 mins to come back. She came in, sat on the floor between my mother & I & gave us his diagnosis & our options. Although neither was good, her compassion & sensitivity was astounding, knowing we would hurt either way! We chose to take him out of the misery because he had a rare blood clot condition that traveled to his spine which caused his paralysis in his hind parts & would never be able to regain mobility there due to that! But he was miserable & didn’t want to see him that way! She made that trial & transition so much more easier although we didn’t want to lose him. Will always use these caring, loving & compassionate beings to care for our furry family members!! God Bless you all & the hands & hearts the Lord has given you to care for our furry loved ones!! My dog had an accident at the groomers and as a result suffered a tongue laceration. She was taken to VERG Brooklyn and was seen by Dr. Rosen. A few hours later, I noticed she was bleeding and she had blood stains around her mouth and leg. I immediately called VERG and spoke to one of the receptionist, Demoy (not sure about the spelling of her name). I began to explain my reason for calling by giving her details about my dog's accident at the groomers. Demoy didn't let me finish and I will assume she only heard me say "groomers" because she responded by saying VERG is not a grooming place. As I attempted to clarify, she put me on hold for about five minutes. She returned and I asked to speak to Dr. Rosen. She put me on hold and came to tell me Dr. Rosen was unavailable because of an emergency but that I can speak to another doctor. I agreed. She put me on hold again to only come back to say I couldn't speak to another doctor and I had to wait for Dr. Rosen to call me back. I asked when should I expect Dr. Rosen's phone call. She couldn't tell me. The receptionist was unfriendly, insensitive, and her tone was unpleasant. I spoke to my sister about my unpleasant experience so she decided to call VERG after 10 minutes I spoke to them. I found it interesting when my sister called Dr. Rosen was immediately available. It's so important for receptionists to be welcoming as they represent an organization that treats critical care for animals.  I was worried that I went ahead to call Blue Pearl Veterinary Emergency Hospital. The receptionist was pleasant, empathic, and sensitive to my dog's emergency needs. Read Less

The doctors are fantastic and the techs are super sweet. I also love that they always call to check-in on Ralph after his appointment. Another great thing is they are always up front with you about the cost of everything from blood work to medication to procedures so you never feel blindsided by cost. Ralphie had an injury about two weeks ago and they treated him with medication and didn't rush into expensive imaging that thankfully it turned out he didn't really need. First off I wanted to say that I would never write a review this long if I didn't really like the place. Everyone here is super nice great, loving, and caring! My family and I brought out dog here as his stomach got really big as a result of GDV. Long story short he had to be euthanized. Dr. Austin was very helpful and stayed in contact me throughout our dog's stay. She explained everything so clearly over the phone and would call me whenever something came up with our dog. When we went to go see our dog after his euthanization, everyone at the VERG was so kind and genuine. I was balling the entire time and they really made me feel so cared about! Dr. Austin even said she gave him a kiss goodbye for us which was really the sweetest thing. They let us see him and brought us tissue boxes. Dr. Austin also answered all of the questions we had to the best of her knowledge. They gave us all the time we needed to say our last goodbyes. After everything the nurses discussed a few things with us and refunded some of the money we had already payed for the surgery that they couldn't do on him (or just really wouldn't have helped). Point of the story is the VERG is great!UPDATE: I didn't get a chance to finish writing the review yesterday which I think was a sign because today I received a card from the doctors that helped us at the VERG expressing how sorry they were for our loss. The sweetest thing ever and such a pleasant surprise! I thought that they saw so many animals a day that each animal is just an animal to them but it's really not. Read Less

In reading some of the less favorable comments, I beg to differ although I have dogs. My experience on four difference occasions has always been top-notch.   This is an emergency vet.   It's going to cost more - know that when you begin, or get pet insurance if you don't like expense.   (They always give you an estimate before they proceed.)In March, my 14 year old dog collapsed and I took her to VERG (I had been twice before).   Dr Vicky Karachun was our point of contact - she was terrific, compassionate, explained the issue well, let us grieve and helped the dog go.   (Would humans be able to do this in extremis).   Thank you Dr Karachun.   I got a new old dog who was bitten by an aggressive mastiff who couldn't deal with friendly  (avoid that dog in Ft Greene Park) and our vet was Dr Kate Crecaft who, too, was competent, compassionate and absolutely wonderful as a person and a Veterinarian.  Christina, the tech, also top-notch.I wish I could use this place for regular vet service but I am gratified that VERG is nearby.   4 times in 5 years.   No complaints only praise.   Thank you. I have been bringing my baby boy Valentino to VERG since we first adopted him and he needed his shots and a neuter. We have never received anything other than total compassion and the highest quality care at each and every visit. Valentino was adopted with heart worms, a condition of which we were unaware. The VERG team discovered the condition and saved his life. Dr. Carlson provided such exceptional service. Not only did he successfully treat an aggressive case of heart worms, but he kept us completely informed about the procedure, the recovery, and what to expect moving forward. Dr. Carlson provided thorough home care instructions for after the procedure, and made himself available by telephone if any questions arose. I have not experienced this level of personalized attention at any other clinic with any of my other pets. Besides this, the staff is always so helpful and friendly. Most importantly, they are so kind to Valentino. These small displays of compassion really transform what could otherwise be a stressful or scary experience.I saw a couple reviews criticizing the price of the veterinary care. The prices are really fair, especially considering the quality of care, the personalized attention, and the warmth of the entire team. Read Less

I brought my terrier mix here in February 2017 when he'd eaten part of a towel and was having nausea and diarrhea that wasn't going away. I didn't want to wait 2 weeks for the next appointment at our usual vet, so I walked in here. Everyone at VERG was wonderful, kind, and patient with me and my puppy. I was mostly scared he'd had an intestinal obstruction. They did an x-ray and assured me there was no blockage. They even showed me the films when I asked (out of curiosity) to see them! They gave my dog very helpful medications to help him with his nausea and outlined a care plan to get him back to his normal self. To be fair, a lot of this would be natural to a more experienced dog owner (bland food, etc.), and the final price was quite expensive, but as a fairly new dog owner (we've only had our dog about 6 months), it was 100% worth it to me. (And pet insurance reimbursed a whole bunch of it!) I was especially touched that I got not just one, but several follow up messages from the vet and other staff members making sure my dog was recovering all right.A+ would recommend for situations where you just don't want to wait to go to the regular vet. My experience started as excellent and ended up as HORRIBLE.My cat was in critical condition last year - diagnosed with Diabetes. We brought him to VERG and he was well-treated, although it was very expensive. Thank you, Dr. Winzelberg!!!This year our cat stopped eating and we brought him to VERG again. I pointed out that his lymph nodes feel swollen and he has bumps all over his chin. Dr Vicky Karachun didn't pay any attention - making fun that cat at such age developed acne. We were charged $500 for IV and blood test which showed nothing.  I had to go back to my regular vet in a few days, as my pet was still behaving abnormal and refused to eat. Guess what? He shaved his chin and it was all swollen and bumpy and infected!!!How can a licensed veterinarian NOT notice this???Since my veterinarian is just a general specialist he referred us to dermatologist. So I made an appointment with Dr. Rada Panich, who suggested doing allergy tests.I told her that my cat used to be diabetic, but currently in remission without insulin, and should NOT be given any steroids! We got 3 types of pills. Next day my cat's blood glucose was 3 times more than normal range, because she gave him STEROIDS!! He had all possible side effects and after I googled I found out that this medication should not be given to diabetic cats. When we came to the clinic to complain about it, staff told us that the doctor is out and they cannot help us, unless we bring our cat again and THEY RUN MORE TESTS AND CHARGE MORE MONEY!! All I can say - they make WAY TOO MANY MISTAKES. It is all about earning money. There are some good and caring specialists, but unfortunately, not all of them. Read Less

I took my dog here out of pure fear and desperation when he started having a seizure. The staff was nothing but kind, warm, friendly, caring and helpful. And that's just to start. They took unbelievable care of my dog. He stayed over night in the ICU on medication and under watch. He saw a neurologist and was out on medication and has had only 3 seizure this year since seeing them. That's a dramatic change from 2-3 a month he was having. The last vet we saw disregarded us and said pugs just have seizures and he couldn't help. Verge proved what an incompetent idiot that other vet was. I also need to comment on pricing. The price we paid for this visit was absolutely fair. They were completely transparent in what the range of cost could be and it ended up being less which they refunded to us. We still go for an annual checkup which also has a fair price, a nice, kind, helpful and warm staff and they even keep in touch with our regular vet to make sure everything is going well with our dog. I would be doing you a disservice by not telling you about my experience with VERG and Doctor Cherrone. My dog Brando recently had surgery to remove a benign cyst on his chest as well as an anal gland. The surgery went well and we put a lot of trust in Doctor Cherrone - what went wrong is the way her and VERG treated us afterwards and the way they sent Brando home.1) When Brando was discharged he was a mess. He had a sticky substance all over his skin which now more than a month later it's spread into an infection under his head and chest! His infection started to get worse and she barely looked at it in his post-op appointment saying "it will work itself out just keep bathing it". Great advice and care (not).2) I've called VERG asking to speak with Doctor Cherrone about how the infection was getting worse on the surgical site and she refused to speak with me. VERG also told me to go see my regular vet - refusing to provide any care or responsibility. They are willing to take thousands of dollars, but after the surgery is done, well they are DONE with you. VERG doesn't actually care about the health of my dog.3) Even before the surgery you could not speak to your surgeon. Besides your appointment where she hands you proposed estimates for thousands of dollars - expect to not have any questions answered outside of your initial appointment.I've learned from my mistake of bringing Brando to VERG. He's the most precious thing in my life and deserves much better care - by individuals who actually are driven by their love for animals. Read Less

It's been 24 hours and she is almost back to normal. Pricing can be a concern for many, and while this was unexpected, it was not exuberant in cost. It was definitely in line with normal, every day fees. Wait time once we were there was about 5 minutes in the waiting room, and 10 in the exam room. Dr. Panich was very sweet and gentle with my cat and immediately recognized her symptoms as a food allergy. She gave me an allergy medicine that I swear helped the same day, and did took some blood work so we can figure out exactly what the allergy is to, although the cat is already 100x after being switched off the offending food. Only 4 stars because it has taken weeks to get the blood work back, but this could be the fault of the lab, not necessarily VERG. It is pretty pricey, but so is my human dermatologist, so I'm not sure what else I would expect here in NYC! Read Less

I am so thankful to Dr. Manesis and the wonderful staff at VERG. We've been struggling to figure out what to do with our little shitzu who randomly refuses to eat and I finally feel at ease after taking him to this ER.The receptionists, nurses and veterinarians were all welcoming and professional. We were never pushed to consider additional expensive testing. (Anyone who's been to a crappy vet hospital knows there's nothing worse than feeling like vets care more about your money than your baby.) And Dr. Manesis took the time to explain everything that was happening in the gentlest manner. Yes, you might have to wait half an hour but that's just par for the course. Thank you all again. SUB-PAR service with SKY-HIGH costs! Wait-time day and night was MADDENING. Some of the staff was downright rude and clearly hated their jobs. Who knows how they treat the animals in the back? Vets were nice when they got to you. For the volume of work, the place only seemed to have ONE vet on duty (day and night). The only positive is that my dog did get better with the recommended course of action. Overall, this was a HORRIBLE experience!!! As a worst case scenario, I'm glad this place exists, however, i feel pretty strongly that certain Dr.s take advantage of the situation in order to rip people off. This past Saturday I had to take my cat in for an enema, a routine procedure that usually takes about 20 mins anywhere else I've taken him, depending on the business of the hospital. Unfortunately, the Dr. I was assigned to was a complete idiot and had no experience with this kind of situation. She quoted me a price of between $900-1500, which i laughed as last time I had been there (3 months prior), it was half the price. She also told me the procedure would require a 24 hour hospitalization period to monitor his progress, again, never had this happen. There would need to be x-rays, medicine, fluids, the whole 9 yards. Naturally, i told her no thank you, as constipation is common ailment with my cat and made another appointment somewhere else, where the Dr. only had to feel his stomach to see how backed up he was. 30 minutes later and after a $160 bill, my kitty was just like new. Fortunately I was not desperate in my situation, however, for those pet owners who do go to this place out of a desperate situation, its awful that people like this exist. Although the idea of a 24 hour clinic is valued and needed, this practice of trying to rip desperate people off is digusting and morally wrong. I understand that rent is high but these people need to re-consider why they went into the medicine field in the first place. Read Less

My dog suddenly started having trouble walking and it progressed to the point that she could barely even stand. I took her to four different vets who couldn't figure out what was wrong and said they'd need to do about $5,000 worth of tests to figure it out (which I didn't have, of course). The last one referred me to Dr. Prata at VERG. He examined Lexi for all of about 30 seconds before giving me a diagnosis of torn ACLs. When he did the surgery to repair the first one, he discovered that she had lupus. He did a WONDERFUL job of keeping me calm, explaining everything and laying out a treatment plan. He assured me that dogs aren't affected by lupus the same way that humans are, it only attacks the joints the same as rhumetoid arthritis, not the organs. He told me not to look it up on the internet or I'd drive myself crazy. Which, of course, I did and I was very dubious because everything I read made it sound like Lexi would only have a few painful months left. Well, soon after the surgery she was up and running around again like a puppy. That will be two years ago this summer and she has not had a single problem since. People on the street are always asking me if she's a puppy and are always shocked when I tell them that she's 12 years old! I do believe that even if we had not had such a fortunate outcome, I would still be writing a glowing review of this place and Dr. Prata. It was mostly just such a comfort to KNOW after so many months of uncertainty and worry. Prata's a bit of a strange duck, but he is extremely attentive, kind, skilled and comforting and does a lot of follow up. The office is spotless and cheerful. A couple times that I went the front desk staff was a little brusque, but other times they were good, so I guess it depends who you get. Anyway, I would highly recommend this place and Dr. Prata, especially for anyone who needs a specialist for their dog. Read Less

My one month old kitten had a horrible experience w/ Ivomec (administered by Vet my Pet - btw not their fault). Vet my Pet gave the correct dosage of Ivomec for his ear mites but unfortunately, he suffered from the side effects (temporary blindness, lethargic, was dazed, walked as if he was drunk, dehydrated). Vet Emerg provided me with the diagnoses, treatment (over night stay) and stay at home Rx. THANK GOD the side effect of Ivomec was not life threatening to my kitty. My kitty bounced back as if nothing ever happened to him. I'm thankful to God that they were able to help him. Yes by all means they are way too expensive however - I could not imagine putting a price tag on my babies (kitty & dog) when it comes to any medical or life/death situation. Thank God I had the $$$ at the time (still paying) but a word of advice to pet owners - do your research. A lot of animal medications are for humans as well and if you can get a prescription (from your primary doctor) w/o getting it from vets - DO IT!!! Read Less

My 17 year old cat developed clots that blocked flow to her hind legs - effectively paralizing her. We rushed her to this office on a Sunday (Mother's Day) because her regular vet was unavailable. The staff was professional and respectful. After her examination, Emma Ryan explained that the prognosis was not good and my cat was in a great deal of pain. She recommended putting her down and I agreed so her agony could come to an end. I was able to hold her as she was given her injection and as life left her. All through this difficult process Ms. Ryan was loving, gentle and treated my Tashi as if she were her own. Afterwards she gave me a hug, which I needed. I can't possibly imagine how anyone could have been more compassionate and made this process any more bearable. I will be forever grateful. Read Less

I think the people at VERG have good intentions, but we had a very unfortunate experience there. We found a kitten that was 4 weeks old and she was in great health overall. She had worms and ring worm, typical street cat stuff, but she was lively and had a good appetite. We took her to a vet that prescribed Albon medication for her worms. She had a bad reaction to it late at night so I rushed her to VERG. They told me it was not the medication and got her better. But then they gave the Albon to her again and she got worse and I had to rush her back to them the next night. This went on like this for 4 nights in a row, and I kept asking about possible allergies, and reading about the medication and the side effects, which was exactly what the kitten was experiencing. By the 4th visit she was so weak I demanded they take her off the medication and flush her out and then I would take her home. They said they would not give it to her and I was relieved. Then I got a call the next day that she was touch and go. I was totally surprised because she was doing better the night before after not receiving the medication. I asked if she had received the Albon again and they said yes, the doctor had decided to give it to her without calling us or getting our consent. The kitten died shortly after. We were devastated and so upset that they made this decision expressly against our wishes. Since it is the ONLY 24 hour clinic in Brooklyn, go there if you have to but please be aware that at least some of the doctors are not willing to hear what you have to say about your pet and they may not follow your instructions, which could, as in our case, lead to the death of your animal. A couple months ago our black lab started limping on one of his hind legs. It seemed to get a little better at first but it was clear after a couple of weeks that it wasn't going away. He couldn't take long walks and didn't want to play frisbee anymore (very out of his character). Our regular vet told us that he had probably torn his ACL, a ligament in the knee. Unfortunately our vet told us that Bailey was going to need surgery. Luckily he referred us to Veterinary Emergency and Referral Group, which was right around the corner from us. We were able to get an appointment the same week that we called with Dr. Prata. From the minute we walked in it was clear that the staff was caring and competent. The receptionists were helpful, the technician was friendly, and Dr. Prata was great. He made a point of spending some time to get Bailey and us comfortable. He went over the surgery process with us in great detail. He was honest and to the point. Bailey had the surgery the same day and is now back to his normal crazy self, back at the dog park playing frisbee. We've since found out that a torn ACL is a very common problem in dogs. I would highly recommend Dr. Prata and the staff at Veterinary Emergency group if any of your pets ever need surgery. Read Less

Read Less

My cat had a urinary issue that was an emergency, on Thanksgiving! My concern was, could I afford a vet on Thanksgiving?  I had tried to take him to Blue Pearl, and they wanted $2,700 just to admit my cat!  While VERG is not cheap, they were $900 less than Blue Pearl, which is a significant amount to me, and treated my boy very well!  We got him in right away.  They were amazing about keeping me updated, and Dr. Lazarus continued to check up on him, and was available for my questions and concerns even after I had brought him home!  They were also aware of my financial concerns, and didn't try to tag on unnecessary and expensive tests!  I think this is the best place to bring your pet in an emergency situation! For starters, my dog "Scout" has a very serious heart condition.  We started this journey over 2 years ago with dr. Carlson and the cardio team. At that point the outcome was bleak, and we were told he could have less than 8 months with us.  Scout is currently eating his dinner on the couch. We have seen other cardiologists throughout the city and upstate while traveling, or when we weren't close to Verg during an emergency, but we have not found anyone as understanding, caring or knowledgeable about scouts form of Heart disease. (He has a failing left mitral valve.)At this point we are going in on a weekly basis. In addition to making appointments with the cardio team, we often go in as emergency patient. We have been very impressed with the skill and kindness of all of the emergency vets.  We highly recommend VERG north for any sort of complex or semi complex issue.  In addition to being awesome for scout, it should also be noted that they handle my "high anxiety GF" with ease. Review:Absolute worst experience in NYC so far and that is saying a lot!  We waited over 2 1/2 hours and still was not seen. It wasn't even that busy.  They purposely understaff to maximize profits. We finally left and the staff sort laughed under their breath and said "ok bye" with zero concern for our cat.  They found it entertaining which is what you would expect from those types of people.  You'll see what I mean if you do not head this warning and end up going there. Came in about 2 weeks ago, unfortunately when my Rocko was in his last moments of what is suspected to be liver failure. He actually died in my arms by the time I reached the door but they rushed into action as I got in. Although he did not make it, I felt confident due to the diligence of the staff. And after he passed away, they were very comforting in my moments of grief. Allowing me the time I needed before getting down to the paper work for his cremation. They always presented him to me as a sleeping child not a dead dog. I found that to be very very comforting and assuring that he was finally at peace. I had a few I rushed moments with my boy. Cremation:I chose to get him cremated and VERG was beyond the best with the process. I never felt forced to do so, they were helpful with the paperwork. Shout out to Evercare Crematory as well for the clay paw print and lovely urn. When I went to pick him up from the vet, I had also my moments with him again and I was allowed that. Thank you.

Read Less

Had to rush my senior Chihuahua mix there at 4am after he woke up screaming in pain. They were very understanding and friendly when I called to see if I could bring him in (it was my first time) and when we arrived they saw him promptly. Dr. Fico was very kind and explained everything to me in detail even drawing diagrams to explain what was going on (pressure on the spinal nerve). Luckily they only had to give him a steroid injection and pain killers which along with the cost of the appointment was very reasonable. Would definitely go to them again in an emergency! Read Less

I once forgot his medication while he was staying with my parents for a few days and they even called in a temporary refill to my parents local pharmacy so he wouldn't go without his pills. I can't say enough good things about them and I feel very lucky to have found such a great team. My dog is my life and my best friend and they treated him with the love and respect he deserves. Read Less

We came here fearing the worst for our 11 year old Australian Shepherd, Zoe. She was lethargic and not eating. Dr. Lord and Vet Tech Jason were both very kind and gentle, explaining every step and test along the way. They were patient and treated Zoe wonderfully. After a full blood panel and X-rays, we were relieved that there was nothing terminally wrong; she was given medications at the hospital and sent home with more. It's been 24 hours and she is almost back to normal. Pricing can be a concern for many, and while this was unexpected, it was not exuberant in cost. It was definitely in line with normal, every day fees. And while we did not use this option, they also offer Care Credit - which is like a credit card for medical costs at 0% interest for 6 months and allows even less than perfect credit. Highly recommend Brooklyn Verg and their entire staff!Read Less

This is not a review for emergency services, only for the dermatologist Dr. Panich. I made a same day appointment with her the week of Christmas and was very nicely accommodated. My cat had been scratching her face and neck nonstop, to the point that she was bleeding and scabbed (she is hairless). Read Less

Read Less

Last week I was walking my dog on the sidewalk and he apparently licked something off the ground. All of a sudden he was foaming at the mouth and his mouth was bleeding. Obviously I panicked but knew that Veterinary Emergency and Referral group was nearby. I ran in hysterical with my dog. The staff was very comforting and took Nemo in the back and immediately began treating him. Everyone at the clinic was great, they took the time to explain to me everything they were doing with Nemo. Everyone was extremely caring and really helped me, even though I was hysterical. Needless to say Nemo is back home with us now doing well thanks to the prompt care that he received at Veterinary Emergency and Referral Group. Read Less

This place has taken great care of my dog two times now. It is clean, all the Doctors are helpful, smart and caring, and you can call any time to get an update on how your pet is doing. My dog actually was sad to leave the arms of Dr. Levitzky, I could not believe I saw her tail wagging during the exam! It is great to know when your pet is sick there is a safe place to go. Read Less

My cat received the best care here, not only did they ""JUMP"" to attention and examine him immediately when I came in with him, they helped me to calm down. I owe them many thanks for a thorough job. When my husband went to visit him the next day they allowed him to stay for as long as he wanted. This place is great, I hope I never have to come back, sorry but I prefer a healthy cat which you've given back to me. Thanks C. Thomas Read Less

We brought our cat in at 3:30 am when he realized he was blind (from undiagnosed hypertension, it turns out). Dr. Anderson explained everything to us, told us our options, offered to let our regular vet take care of testing, and was very patient. Our follow up a few days later for bp was handled by techs who were sweet and gentle. Our follow up with the internist, Dr. Shaw, was great. She was super thorough, explained all the options, and was nonjudgmental about our decisions. We are lucky (?) that our cat has enough issues to where we can see her as a regular vet. Read Less
