Something is terribly wrong with these new receptionist August 6th I have never been so upset with buffalo small animal hospital in my life. We have been coming to this vet for a very long time now and have had great receptionist in the past. A receptionist named Amy was disgustingly rude with me. Her customer service is horrific! I brought my dog there for his rabies shot and the vet tech who came out to get him said that I will receive a call when he is ready. I said “great I’m going to leave really quick and come back when he is ready” ( I was only going 7 mins up the street to Wendy’s for some food). I received a call from Amy and here is the conversation: Amy: “hi this is Amy uhm… did you leave?” Me: “yes I told the vet tech that I would leave and come back when he was ready”. Amy (with a lot of attitude) : YOU NEED TO COME BACK!!!! Me: I am coming back... Amy (with alot of attitude): WHEN ARE YOU COMING BACK?!! Me: like I said I will come back when he is ready is he ready? Amy (with alot of attitude): YES HE’S READY… This was the rudest phone conversation I have ever had with someone from buffalo small animal hospital. Absolutely unacceptable. THEN today 9/22 My boyfriend spoke to a woman name Destiny and she was SUPER RUDE!! He was making a grooming appointment for our dogs and she completely gave him a hard time. I am over this!!!! We need more receptionist like Rebecca because she is the most professional one. We have been going here for 9 years now and I am not liking the customer service we have been getting from these new receptionist it seriously needs to be corrected!! Read Less

I have brought cats here a couple of times and they just charge you whatever they want.... they do not inform you of any prices or even what procedure they want to do on your animals!!  My first cat was around 200$ to get fixed, my next cat was suddenly almost 300$, and when my friend brought her kitties in, not only did they give 2 completely different prices for the same procedure, but the total bill was almost $1000!!!   500$ for a neutering? Thats insanity! Not only that, but the red headed woman i have had to deal with twice now has no bedside manner and is rude as can be. She doesnt like taking a no, thats for sure. She wouldnt let me talk to anyone else, or any other vet for that matter, and wouldnt explain any parts of the bill to me.     Part of being a vet tech is dealing with customers unfortunately..... if you cant handle a problem, dont work at the front desk!!I had to walk out from an appointment i waited a month and a half for.... they originally told me they would notify me about an earlier appointment (which obviously didnt happen) and when they confirmed the appointment the day before, she didnt even know what animals were going into the appointment- just completely forgot there were 2 animals coming in, and not just one.The whole experience was embarrassing and rude. Many other places offer the same services (neuter and spay!) For much lower prices- usually around 200$ or less!  Please find another place to take you pet, this one is all about extorting owners for the most money they can! Read Less

I've been taking my dogs here for nearly 10 years now. My last dog had several serious chronic health issues, and my concerns and observations have always been taken seriously by the vets. I brought him in at one point several years ago in pretty rough shape, and the vet not only recommended a change in medication for him, but also several supplements that helped to prolong his life and improve his quality of life for several years after. When he started to go downhill this past winter, the Dr. Coffman was very up front with me about his prognosis and timeline along with options for continued treatment and the prognosis for each option, which I appreciated. When I had to have him put down a few months later, he was very sensitive to the situation and we were allowed to stay with him after the procedure for as long as needed. The front office staff has always been exceptional, and their prices are very reasonable. They have never tried to push me into any medication or procedure that I was not comfortable with, either from a treatment or cost standpoint, and have always taken the time to explain all of my options, side effects, pricing, followup, etc. to me.I started bringing my puppy to them in June, and they've been just as wonderful with him as they were with my old man. I've been taking my pets (I've owned cats and dogs) to Buffalo Small Animal for approximately 20 years. All my furry kids have been treated by the vets and techs there and they have always been helpful, knowledgeable, courteous and treated my pets well.My oldest is 13 now, and she had a fatty tumor that was removed when she was 11. The surgery, her aftercare, even the way the vet came to the house to bring her medication, I was just very impressed with her treatment. My youngest pup just turned 1, and I can't imagine taking him anywhere else. He usually wants to stay with them when he goes because he loves all the techs there.Years ago, there was a dip in quality of care and with rising costs for a little while (before 2010 approximately), I had considered moving my pets when I moved to the 'burbs but I'm glad I didn't. I still drive into the city to care for my two dogs and I happily recommend them to anyone who is in need of a vet service. Read Less

Not at all happy with the grooming service at this clinic. What made me more upset about the situation is instead of taking into consideration that my dog looked like crap when I picked him up, they still wanted to charge me almost full price (50.00) for just the cut. No bath, nothing. I understand that they wanted to ensure my dog was safe as well as their staff considering my dog is not yet comfortable with his grooming, but instead of just stopping when my dog was giving them a hard time they decided to continue and send my dog home looking like this. They have groomed my dog before and were aware that he is jumpy, but they still made the decision to groom my dog today. Very upset at how the manager handled the situation. Very upset. I have been going to this clinic for a few months now. There vet service is awesome! BUT I just had a horrible experience with the grooming dept. So let me be clear that my dog is about 1 years old. He is not to big on grooming . He was groomed by this location once before and they did a good job, but after I was told he may need to be sedated the next time he comes. So today I show up and she tells me it would cost 140 to groom and sedate him, which was insane and out of my price range. So I nicely told her I could not afford that and I would just have to cancel. She insisted I leave  and she would still work on him knowing he would be a little more difficult to groom. She said they would charge the regular avg price about 60 bucks.3 hours later she calls and says she was unable to finish him because of his behavior and it would still cost 50 bucks. I show up and you have noooo idea how horrible my baby looked. They had the nerve to still try and charge me 50 bucks !! What made me so upset was this. #1. I understand that he was not easy to work with as he is not used to being groomed. Why not call me a hour into it and say it was not going to work instead of continuing to work on him. #2. This same groomer Sarah worked on my dog prior and is familiar with him. Why not just tell me they would not want to take the chance unless he was sedated. I would have fully understood and rescheduled when I had the funds. When I spoke to the Manager Heather all she seemed to care about what her supposed 3 employees that worked on my dog. Not one ounce of her felt bad or sympathetic of the situation. All she was concerned about was her money. I would have been happy if they said hey listen we were unable to do a full groom so we will just charge you half for what we did. BUT INSTEAD YOU TRY AND CHARGE FULL PRICE. He received a horrible cut,he did not receive a bath or get his nails cut and I was expected to pay 50 bucks. Lets just say I walked out of there paying $20 and they are lucky they received that. I will be canceling my services and never returning. It is so unfortunate because they have great vets.THIS PLACE ONLY CARES ABOUT THE MONEY AND HOW MUCH THEY CAN CHARGE YOU. PLEASE STAY FAR AWAY AND DO NOT GET YOUR PUP GROOMED HERE!!scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/… Read Less

I started using BSAM two years ago when I needed to board my dog for a few days while I was going out of town. I read the reviews and other dog owners seemed happy with the cost and care of their pets. In total we boarded her there twice and each time she seemed happy and healthy. *Kind of long so stay with me!*The reason I am giving this place one star is from my last vet visit. If I could give them negative stars, I would. I got a card in the mail saying she was due for her shots the same day that my dog got pink eye, so I called to see how much it was going to cost so that I could bring the money with me. I was told the initial cost and planned on having cash on hand. When I got there, the vet and techs were nice enough and my dog was slightly anxious so they gave her some treats to calm her. She asked me all the routine questions, weighed her and examined her eyes and administered the shots. Then she asked if my dog was on heart worm medication, which I said no (and I felt like a horrible owner!) so she said they should do blood work to test her, which I agreed to (since I was feeling so guilty) and she asked if I cut her nails and I said no, but they aren't an issue since we walk her so much, and she proceeded to "borrow" my dog for a minute to do the blood work. While I sat there waiting a vet tech came in and asked if I wanted a year supply or six month supply of heart worm meds. Not even thinking I just said six and then they brought my dog back in with freshly cut nails, which I did not agree to. The vet had prescribed an eye drop medication for my dog and told me to wait for it and another tech told me to wait for the blood work. A few minutes went by and I still had no eye medication, results or heart worm medication and another vet tech told me to leave. I had to remind her what I was waiting for and proceeded to wait another few minutes. The entire ordeal put a sour taste in my mouth and I will NOT be bringing my dog there for any services ever again. I asked friends of mine about their vets and every single one of them said their vets make them sign off on release waivers and forms stating the testing/blood work they will be doing and acknowledging the price. Not only was I not told about the price of the blood work, they cut my dogs nails with out asking and charged me!! Not only did I feel swindled, but all of the extra services nearly doubled my bill. I was outraged. I paid the portion of the bill that I had the cash for and asked if I could pay the rest later. The receptionist told me I could take my time paying. About a month later I got an invoice in the mail with an addition $4 charge for a "statement handling fee" - which I was never told about. If you want to go to a good vet- don't go here. Not personable, very rushed and obviously just out for your money. Read Less

Buffalo Small Animal Hosptial is incompetent when it comes to identifying serious issues. If I could give them negative stars I would. The Vet treating my cat didn't consider his extremely low packed cell volume levels as significant enough to require extreme intervention (cats are supposed to have a PCV of 30%, he was at 6%) so the treatment they prescribed for his condition was useless. A week later my cat ended up deteriorating to the point where he was going into congestive heart failure, his PCV was at 4% and the Vet basically said he has no idea how the cat was still alive because those levels cannot maintain life. They didn't catch the congestive heart failure and instead sent us home with an appetite stimulate, some sort of bs cat food and an iron supplement which would have never helped him either way.  They also didn't deworm him in his first visit which lead him to having an infestation, we told them that he was a cat we found on the street so I'm not exactly sure why they wouldn't have dewormed him the first visit. They also told us he didn't have fleas, he did. Later they tried to convince us to buy their overpriced Advantage because its the only Authentic one - OK, because thousands of reviews on Amazon for Advantage sold by Amazon are apparently total garbage.I am never ever taking my cat back here again, I feel terrible that I didn't read these reviews before we took him there. The only reason my cat is still alive is because we took him to Orchard Park Veterinary Center to receive the care he needed and deserved. They also didn't fax over the cat's records to OPVC upon request so thanks for being as useful as an umbrella in a tornado Buffalo Small Animal Hospital. Read Less

If I could give your Veterinary practice ZERO stars I would! My family has been bringing animals to your practice for years, and the quality of care has continued to decline! From my mother being told she was bad pet parent for having a sick animal euthanized (because she couldn't dish out thousands of dollars on a surgery that had less than a 50/50 chance) to the care you have provided to my 5 animals personally. When my 14 year old rabbit, yes he lived to 14, had to be euthanized you left me sitting in the waiting area ALONE crying my eyes out while my animal was taken from my hands, euthanized, and I was handed back a dead body in a box! I have NEVER heard of a practice not allowing you to be with your animal for this procedure, but you had no problem with it. Then I bring in a Great Dane puppy, and one of your vets tried convincing me Hill's Science Diet puppy food was the BEST food for him and lectured me on how uneducated I was for feeding a raw diet, mind you this was AFTER telling me how healthy he was and how wonderfully he was growing/developing! This same vet tried to convince me to neuter my Dane puppy at just 4 months old! Anyone who knows anything about extra large breeds knows that is a huge no no; their body needs to develop properly BEFORE being neutered, and 18 months or older is the recommended age but I'm not vet so my opinion and research didn't matter. Then offering to cut my newly rescued bully breed mix's nails and he was quicked so bad the powder didn't even work to stop the bleeding! The whole foot had to be wrapped up; I've never quicked him, but again I'm no vet so no one cared what I had done or how I did it... but you were so nice (*note sarcasm) to tell me you wouldn't charge me for that service, I mean you only clipped 2 nails and one had my dog bleeding EVERYWHERE, but you're the professionals. And lastly and most importantly the straw that broke the camel's back! My Dane ended up sick and not eating, he was brought to your practice for an "emergency visit" as we knew something wasn't right, well it took about 5 minutes to even be acknowledged... sounds like an emergency, right? After tests and xrays etc he was diagnosed with gastroenteritis, no big deal. Then he was prescribed 3 medications to "make him better," and given the MAXIMUM dosage of metronidazole for his weight/size; 3000mg per day, 3 pills (500mg each) every 12 hours 6x500 = 3000mg every 24 hours! We were given no drug information, but apparently this drug can cause all sorts of issues with the nervous system! Well, when my big 167lb boy was collapsing in my backyard and I called your practice to see if this was a side effect of the medication I was told, "Someone will call you back." YES! Because a 19 month old puppy collapsing randomly isn't important; why did I need called back you may ask? Oh, because your practice decided there should be an ALL staff meeting DURING regular business hours which you should be open and available! Instead, I received an answering service who could NOT help me! Luckily, my neighbor referred another vet (who I will be writing a rave review for) and helped me get my dog in my car for transport. Not only was someone willing and able to take my call they wanted to see him IMMEDIATELY! I shared with this office the drugs he was prescribed and was informed right away he has metronidazole toxicity, and started showing pre-seizure symptoms. Had they not taken me right away he could have had a full blown seizure, and I would not have known what to do as I was NOT aware this drug could do this to my dog! Did you know 1/3 the amount your office prescribed would have actually cured his GI issue?! But, I'm no vet so what do I know? This drug caused an issue with dog's nervous system and could have been much worse had I not made it to a vet when I did. And to make matters worse, when your office FINALLY returned my call (after he was already hooked up to IV's and being treated) your vet chose to talk over me and be argumentative! So much more to say, but it exceeds the character limitRead Less

And to make matters worse, when your office FINALLY returned my call (after he was already hooked up to IV's and being treated) your vet chose to talk over me and be argumentative! Don't you think she should have been apologetic? And maybe tried to rectify the issue? I guess not! The professionalism of this practice has gone right down the drain. Please get properly trained people in there BEFORE you kill someone's pet! And you should probably reconsider and all staff meeting DURING business hours, so next time you poison someone's pet they can actually reach you and receive treatment! So, now for the next 3 to 21 days (depending how long it takes YOUR prescription to leave my dog's system) I will be needing to assist and almost 170lb dog go outside and relieve himself. It breaks my heart watching him fall over and not be able to walk, but since he's not your pet and based off your vet's attitude I'm sure no one cares anyway! Please pull your pets from the practice before it's too late! I'm just thankful I caught this before something worse had happened! You should be ashamed of yourselves! Read Less

If I could give this place zero stars I would. *Warning: This is long, but if you care about your pet you should really read it. *I have taken my dog there since she was a puppy, simply because it was very close to my home and a friend (who has since removed her dogs from their care) went there at the time,Let me discuss their care of my dog, who is basically like my baby. I never really had a problem with any of the vets or vet techs. They all seemed nice enough and the actual exam rooms are in much better condition than the waiting room.I took my dog in recently because she had been drinking and peeing A TON and she had vomited a few times. They tested her blood and urine and diagnosed her with kidney disease. The next day they did an ultrasound and told me that her right kidney was small and nonfunctional, so her "left kidney had been working twice as hard and that's why it was failing." I thought that didn't really sound very plausible with regards to the pathophysiology of the disease... but whatever... I'm not a vet and I don't read ultrasounds. Here's where the real trouble started. First the vet called me on the phone and told me my dog had chronic kidney disease, which I didn't think was the best. She was at the hospital still so the vet easily could have discussed the results with me in person when I came to pick up my dog. So we're still on the phone and she's like oh we'll monitor her blood work and later in the disease we can flush her kidneys with IV fluids, but it's chronic. So I'm SUPER upset, but I say, "How do you feel about ACE inhibitors?" ((Stay with me if you don't have a medical background.)) ACE inhibitors are blood pressure medications, BUT they're used in humans AND ANIMALS with kidney disease who have protein in their urine. ACE inhibitors SLOW THE PROGRESSION OF KIDNEY DISEASE. So they KEEP YOUR PET ALIVE LONGER. So the vet says, "Well ACE inhibitors are for hypertension, and she DOESN'T HAVE HYPERTENSION." So I just send my boyfriend over to pick up my dog and have her records sent to a real vet since this vet isn't aware of simple measures that can keep my animal alive and healthy longer. We take her to the other vet. They do an ultrasound. They're like, "her kidneys are symmetrical, she has renal dysplasia, and it's most likely genetic." They do all these blood tests, urine tests, tell me what stage kidney failure she's in, talk about treatment options, give me written information. Then today the new vet measures her blood pressure. Her blood pressure is so high they said she could have her retina detach or neurological problems at any time!!!!! So not only did the old vet not understand about a very commonly used medication that can keep a beloved pet alive longer, but they also didn't even measure her blood pressure, which was so high that she could have gone blind at any moment. That's not the type of doctor I'd trust with a member of my family. I've been going to Dr. Josh Bruzgul for 13 years, and I will never go anywhere else!  My dog, Calypso, a black lab, is not a fan of poking and prodding, but she absolutely adores seeing Dr. Josh.  He gets right down on the floor with her and puts her at ease before he even attempts to examine her.  The exams are thorough and my questions are always answered.  Dr. Josh reminds me that just because my dog is advanced in age doesn't mean she has to feel it. I wish I had a physician tell me that!  At BSAH they take a very cost-effective approach to treating their patients.  I had a scare last year that I thought I might lose my dog, and Dr. Josh reassured me the whole way.  We started with a change in diet and antibiotics. She got better, but the symptoms came back, so we progressed to an ultrasound. I thought cancer or something terrible the whole time, but it turned out to be just some intestinal wall thickening that was causing the problems. Dr. Josh put her on a minimal-dose steroid, and my dog is back to normal!  I know that if there ever comes a day when Calypso needs surgery, BSAH will be there for us the whole way. They are great about reminding me when she is due for shots or heartworm, and the office visits are never too long.  I recommend all of my fellow animal owners to go see Dr. Josh, or any of the veterinarians at BSAH.  I've had tremendous results with their fine staff! My cat gets a head cold and im told this was the best. I get there and the staff is friendly untill i met the actual vet. I tell her the cats story how i found her a year ago... followed being talked down to for keeping her, feeding her friskies (american ash free cat food), and just about everything else i do is apparently worth this lady to be a snot. Of course, how irresponsible of me for not leaving this little angel in the streets of buffalo. Then bring her into a loving home.To follow how irrisponsible i am for not rushing her into the office, because i had to make an appointment and got schedualed the next day. So $127 for antibiotics and that. Then i get a letter in the mail telling me: "A vet can report a person to animal control office for not getting a rabies shot, and i need to go down there now...."Seriously, youre blackmailing me? How about i get a rabies shot from another vet, and she can go to hell. Now i have always had a cat since i was 2. I know full well how to take care of them and think i am very responsible. And while my cat got better from antibiotics, i have a feeling any vet could come up with the same idea. the whole scheme here is just a horrible way to treat people. I brought my dog in for a possible UTI (it's a re-occurring problem) a while ago. Overall, the veterinarian and the technician that I interacted with were both very nice and professional. They respected my requests (I didn't want tests run because I knew that most likely she just needed a course of antibiotics), and were able to provide me with good advice and recommendations. The only things that stand out as drawbacks is that the woman at the front desk got pretty nasty with me when I realized that my dog was over due for her rabies shot (I usually get 3-year shots, but apparently the last one was a one year shot), and also became quite mean when I inquired about license requirements in the city of Buffalo (I moved only two weeks prior and was trying to get all of my dog's stuff in order). I tend to be a rather laid back person and most things don't bother me, but her insinuating that I don't care about my dog's well-being really angered me. The veterinarian and I were able to set up a good treatment plan for my dog, and he did not give me a hard time about being over-due on the shots...that was much appreciated! They are open comfortable hours and have readily available appointments - which is a major highlight! Took my cats here the other day as there was a bat in basement where litter boxes are and we wanted to make sure rabies shots were updated. Everything went pretty smooth, They looked the cats over. Gave advice on slimming them down as my cats are fat and overweight. Also mentioned about taking care of their gums and dental health like they usually mention. One cat had a little bit of funk in her ear so gave us some medicine for it, to see if it clears up.Overall the staff was friendly, professional, with clear communication and really seemed to care about our cats health. Very gentle and calm with the cats too. Didn't make me feel like they were trying to sell me stuff to make more money. Was in and out quickly and were pretty fairly priced when we checked how much shots would cost compared to other vets. Would definitely go back if I had any other health issues with a pet. Read Less

Many other places offer the same services (neuter and spay!) I've been taking my dogs here for nearly 10 years now. Read Less

The staff is very friendly and Abby always looks and smells beautiful when I pick her up!  We have been going there for 12 years and have never been disappointed.

Read Less

Twice now, Buffalo Small Anima Hospital has overcharged me. The first instance was when I was told I would be able to have a recheck fee waived because my cat just needed a booster shot and FIV test. I had come in for the initial check a few days early. Today, despite being quoted a $180 total fee for boarding my cat while out of town, they first tried to charge me over $200 including tax and a made up holiday fee. After finally agreeing to reduce the holiday fee, they still would not honor the quote that two separate staff members quoted me. They have overcharged me at least $50 in the past month.

Please get properly trained people in there BEFORE you kill someone's pet! And you should probably reconsider and all staff meeting DURING business hours, so next time you poison someone's pet they can actually reach you and receive treatment! On looks alone this office is deplorable - chipped paint/wallpaper, super tiny reception area and overall just a general ugly appearance.  Unfortunately, that is the best part of my experience! There is no communication from the staff and they have little regard for what the pet owner thinks - it's more "take this, dispense meds" attitude from my perspective. I will never go there again nor will I ever recommend. Read Less

My cat now goes to sheridan from now on. Just the same as my old cat did whom lived to the ripe old age of 22. Read Less

Okay, it's a vet, they're never fun and they're not cheap.  But please act like you actually care about my poor little guy.  Most of the staff is very friendly but the vet I had recently had a poor bedside manner, both in his interaction with my cat and with me.  Also, I took my cat in for possible UTI and the vet didn't bother to comment generally on my cat's health, weight, etc.  It would have been nice to have some input while I happened to have my cat there.I did appreciate that they didn't force shots on the cat.  I don't do regular shots for my cats because it is unnecessary for house cats not exposed to other animals or many people.  I appreciated not being peer-pressured into treatment I didn't want.Extra star for the ease with which you can schedule appointments (I went in on a Saturday morning). Read Less
