I have 1 dog and 4 cherished kitties. This veterinarian is unsurpassed from any I have ever had. I receive not only thorough care for each and every one of them, this veterinarian does chiropractic care, acupuncture, and cold laser therapy for healing. My animals have had need for all of these and WOW what a beautiful healing they had. Ie.: My cat must have jumped down the wrong way and her back went out... one chiropractic treatment and she was back to herself without the pain she originally had. We called Pumpkin Hill at 10am this Saturday morning distraught as our 11 yr. old Weimaraner had been suffering from diarrhea & vomiting for 2 days. He was becoming weak & we could tell we needed to see a vet. We are staying at the RV park in Byron......traveling from Phoenix, AZ. This office told us to come on in & treated us & our ailing dog like family. I know it was inconvenient & they had to squeeze us in, but they never made us feel that way. Dr. Merkel was amazing as was the staff who handled our old guy. We are so grateful that they went out of their way to take care of us. Dr. Merkel was extremely knowledgeable & communicated beautifully what was going on. We were able to bring him back to our RV with meds & are hopeful he'll be fully recovered in a couple of days. Cannot say enough good things about this vet! Our 7 year old Boxer was having several balance/head tilt issues. Our old vet didnt take any action and wanted to do imaging. The entire staff is professional, yet warm and personable. You can get an appointment in a reasonable amount of time, and if it's urgent, they find a way. Once there, Dr. Mathes and his technicians are very loving and compassionate. My dog adores them all. Dr. Mathes approaches each case with the individuality it deserves. He does not recommend treatments to "line his pockets" and will suggest holistic approaches to supplement your pet's needs. Pumpkin Hill is a long way from my home, and I don't care. Dr. Mathes is next to god! He is extremely knowledgable & compassionate! He is 100% there with you & your loved ones explaining everything he is doing which really helped MY DOG, she is a service dog & extremely smart it helped her a lot when he spoke to her & showed her what he was going to do, it kept her calm, it was our 1st time w/ him, she was in a lot of pain & scared (she is not a people person), but she did wonderful w/ him...PLEASE move to Hawaii we need you there! I have used this place for years on my horses and I love them! I have a very nervous Arabian who I cannot give shots too. Mathis is the only one who can walk in calmly give her shots and walk out before she even knew what happened. Another time my older mare was very lame and we couldn't figure out why. We called Mathis and he said he was going to start at the hoof and work his way up to check everything. Within the first few minutes we discovered a splinter in her coronet band that was infected! Price was okay, had to wait quite a long time on a couple of the visits. Vet techs were sweet and very helpful. However, the vet himself was very gloomy, and not friendly at all.  He ended the initial visit with a terse response to "Very nice to meet you Doctor."  Still don't quite understand that, we concluded maybe it was a bad day.  After a couple more visits, decided that was his natural demeanor. Didn't hardly say hello, never smiled and impatient just to get the appointment finished. It seemed difficult to even ask about concerns regarding treatment our animal received.  Not going back, too bad since there are no other homeopathic / conventional vets in the immediate Rochester we can find. It has been about two months since I had Rich evaluate and treat my little furry Pomeranian buddy that is going on 14 years of age. He had some arthritic pain and a hunched spine that I have been dealing with for a few years with my local vet in Delaware with no improvement. I am from Byron and have known Rich for years so on my last trip up I brought my dog after contacting Rich to take a look at him,I now have a new dog, well the same dog but what a difference the right vet can make, Rich truly cares about the animal and what is best for it. I brought my Pibble to see Dr. Mathes on the recommendation of a friend who heard about my dissatisfaction at another office. From the first phone call to the greeting we received upon arrival, we and our dog were treated with courtesy and compassion. That's not something you find much of these days and it was worth the trip out from Rochester. We went specifically because our dog was displaying symptoms of either ACL or dysplasia. The doctor had me put my Pit Bull, who is very suspicious of strangers and just getting her nails clipped is an experience, into a hug-hold while he got down on the floor behind her. He did some chiropractic work on her lower back, beginning with a sort of bumpy-roller gadget with magnets in it. For the first 30 seconds or so, I was sure that this was going to end with her bursting out of my arms. Then she actually began to relax and sink into my lap. If you only knew my dog....I was amazed. Especially when he got out the Activator, which clicks pretty loudly, and proceeded to adjust her back with it. She only tensed up a little at first and then settled back into my lap and heaved a big sigh. Based on my dog's behavior during and after the treatment I am sure going to keep bringing her to see them. They showed a genuine interest in my rescue dog and I was super impressed with them.
