I have brought my fur babies to Canandaigua Veterinary Hospital for several years, we have had vets retired or leave but I am so happy Dr. Smith is with this practice. He is so very smart, kind and patient and I have never had an issue. My golden retriever, dachshunds and kitties, loves the staff, they are all so gentle. I can't say enough. Even on those trips when we had to leave without our beloved pet, or got not so good news, the compassion we were shown has made some of the most difficult situations, less scary. Very impressed! We had two new kittens we'd had only a week and one came down with a nasty eye infection (or something like that, from the looks of it) We had previously gone to another local vet which we also love for our other animals, but it was a Saturday afternoon and this one was the only local one open, so we figured it was worth a shot to give a call. They got us right in within the hour at 3pm on a Saturday (we saw signs there that they also have Urgent Care on Sundays from 10-5, which is also pretty cool!) The receptionist, vet tech AND Dr. James were all super nice and helpful and we left feeling like our newest little family member was in good hands. They did quite a few blood tests and checked him over carefully and we left with some eye drops and antibiotics which will hopefully clear it up. They provided very clear instructions under which he should be brought back in immediately or else we'll follow back up within a week. They also directed us whether to make the followup appt with a tech instead of the Dr if possible with certain criteria, to save money on the next visit. I do love our regular vet, but was very pleased with this office, and with their hours being more, we may consider a switch. My mother recently had to put her cat down. Prior he had pretty severe medical issues. The team here kept him alive and well for an additional 2 years. When it came time they were very compassionate. They didn't try to convince my mother, but at the same time assured her that her choice was justified and fair. Even though it was a terrible experience, I immediately realized how much they cared. My puppy has had many infections and my current vet at the time did not think this was abnormal. Dr Smith was immediately concerned and took the time to go over all of her issues and what it could mean. We bring our Family (Panda and Short Tail) here for all their medical needs. The staff, nurses and vets are very in tuned to their needs as well as ours. Yesterday we brought Panda in. Everyone treated him with great love and compassion during the examination and during the final outcome. They shared all the news and findings with us. Panda had swallowed something that was causing his upper intestines to bunch up and he had a nickel size foreign object in his lower intestine. The upper intestine had ruptured. Because of the irreversible damage and inevitable. They helped us make the best decision. They allowed us to stay with Panda and we can't have asked for a greater blessing. Honestly I've had some nightmarish experiences with a few different offices. But the canandaigua veterinarian hospital is by far my favorite. My dog needed a growth removed from his leg, the doctor to be performing the surgery as well as the technissions all were very sweet to me and my partner as well as our dog. Even getting on the floor with him and giving him extra treats after the dreaded thermometer. They took extra special care of him post surgery by allowing him to board with his favorite blankie and keeping in contact with us throughout his entire recovery period. My wife, my 18 y.o. cat moved from Canada to here, and on the second day we realize we had not enough KD food for our pet (he has kidney issues and can only eat medical, "KD" food). We went to this clinic to urgently get that type of food for our cat. The staff was less than helpful and did not show any sign of compassion: we were ready to show a prescription from our usual veterinarian to get the KD food, but we were told that no such food would be delivered until THEIR clinic would see our cat: a prescription from another certified vet was not enough. And the earliest appointment with them was in the middle of the following week! When I asked what to do to obtain that food urgently in the meantime, I was told "you can buy one on the Internet". When I told them that we did not have the Internet yet as we had just arrived, and that anyway it'd take a few days for an Internet order to arrive, I was told "go to the library, Internet is free!" I traveled extensively in Europe, the US and Canada over the past 25y.o., and I have never met such an uncompassionate veterinary clinic. Customer orientation is a concept they just don't grasp. My wife and I moved to Canandaigua in the spring of 2013 and were very concerned with finding outstanding veterinarian care for one of our dogs who had numerous liver vasculature issues. That is when we met Dr. Steve Smith and immediately felt comfortable with him and his staff because of their professionalism and compassion. We all feel that our pets are the most unique, however, Dr. Smith did treat Bono as if he was. He always patiently answered our many questions and addressed our concerns. If you have to take your pet to a vet would highly recommend Canandaigua Veterinary Hospital. The front desk personnel, techs, and doctors are helpful and informative. They truly care for you and your pets and it shows. Making appointments are easy and they are able to accommodate you for last minute for emergencies. Reminders sent in the mail are helpful and make it easy to remember what shots, tests or appointments are coming up. The staff greets you and your pet when you arrive for an appointment, allows time for you to explain your pet's issues, educates and spends time explaining recommendations. When done we feel well informed and comfortable that our pet was in capable hands. We even receive follow up calls asking how our pet is doing several days after the appointment. Dr. Smith has been taking care of our dogs for many years now. When our dog was diagnosed with heart failure it was difficult to handle but Dr. Smith helped our dog through allowing us to spend more time with her before her passing. With the help of Dr. Smith, our big dog lived to a ripe old age of 15. We know that are new dog is in great hands and will receive the best care possible from Canandaigua Veterinary Hospital. It took me a while to find a vet i was completely comfortable with from the front desk, to the techs and doctor. I have been completely satisfied with the care my dogs have been given, the fair fees, and the communication regarding what needs to be done. We lost our 15 year old lab while at Dr. Smiths office, (which is never a pleasant experience) and I will always be grateful for not only how they handled my pup, but how they grieved with my family. Canandaigua Veterinary Hospital is absolutely wonderful!  I have experienced two semi-emergencies with our animals, and they are so helpful on the phone and in person.  In fact, the last time I brought my dog in, the vet called that same evening at 8pm right before she left to make sure my dog was doing ok and if I had any further questions, and then called again at 7:30am in the morning to check on my pet.  I can't express enough how much I appreciate the kindness and thoughtfulness!  I will continue bringing my animals here, and would highly recommend Canandaigua Veterinary Hospital to anyone new to the area or just looking for a new vet.
