I would like to start of by saying that I used to think highly of Catskill Animal Hospital when Dr. Jenkins was in charge, but sadly things have changed since his departure!! My 8 year old yellow lab went improperly diagnosed for nearly a month by Dr. Kirby of Catskill Animal Hospital, before we decided to take him elsewhere. He had a limp in his front left limb, a fever, and was starting to have a decreased appetite when we first made an appointment with Catskill Animal Hospital - he was determined to have a bacterial infection that was affecting his joints and prescribed antibiotics for a 10 day course. By the end of those ten days, his appetite was even more decreased and he suddenly began putting less weight on his left hind limb. He was brought back to Dr. Kirby and some bloodwork was done, and was prescribed another 10 day course of antibiotics - his bloodwork showed that he was slightly anemic and had an elevated white blood cell count, which Dr. Kirby said was likely because of his 'bacterial infection'. During this course of antibiotics, our dog continued to go downhill, and began losing his balance when walking and needed assistance getting up. His quality of life was diminishing as each day passed. After finishing this second round of meds, we contacted Dr. Kirby to explain that he was getting worse and still wouldn't eat much unless he was hand-fed pieces of food. Dr. Kirby offered a THIRD round of antibiotics and a painkiller WITHOUT even offering to see him. By this point our poor dog was suffering and antibiotics were not working - they only made him have to urinate more frequently and caused him to have diarrhea (this went away once he was done with the antibiotics), so we knew the antibiotics were useless for whatever was wrong with him and decided to make an appointment with a different vet to try to figure out what was causing him to be so ill. When we brought him to the new vet, we explained what was going on and they saw how bad he was so immediately brought him in for x-rays. They discovered he had cancer (which likely originated in a bone in his front left limb, hence the reason he had began limping in the first place.) and it had metastasized to his lungs, part of his stomach and to some of the muscle fibers in his left hind limb (which is why he later had difficulty bearing weight on the left hind limb as well and why the muscle started to feel like jello). We knew he was suffering and at this stage it was too late to have any real treatment options, so we made arrangements to have him put to sleep at home. Everyone we talked to was shocked that x-rays had not been done sooner, but Dr. Kirby never even suggested doing them. We are so angry that our poor boy had to suffer like this while cancer continued to spread throughout his body. While we understand that his type of cancer is aggressive and spreads rapidly (his cancer was probably already bad when he first began limping), we could have at least spared him the extra weeks of suffering had we known sooner. We could have focused on giving him better end-of-life care instead of giving him antibiotics that were totally inappropriate for the disease he had. We will never forget this awful experience - our dog deserved better care than what he received. We are thankful to the vet that finally discovered what was really wrong with our poor baby, even though not much could be done at that point.
