This place is absolutely awful! Went in with my mother in law after making an appointment to have her dog put down. My husband and I cleared our schedule and spent the morning making him feel loved and comfortable. We all drive to the office with heavy hearts. Walk in and they tell us they can't help us because he accidentally bit my mother in law a week prior and they have to have authorization from the health department. I was out of the state/area. I found out that my dog was exposed to Parvo which is highly contagious and can be deadly if not treated right away. My neighbor was kind enough to bring my dog in for me to be seen. However, the policy at Highland Animal Hospital is not to see a dog without payment right away. I offered to give my credit card over the phone and they informed me that they cannot do that. I can understand if I was a new client to be skeptical. I have been a client there for over 10 years and have never had payment issues. There wasn’t even an offer for me to pay when I got back. My husband was working and said he could get there later in the evening but might not make it before they close and could come in the morning. Money is not an issue to me, and I was concerned about our dog having the best treatment possible at whatever cost. To make matters worse, my daughter went there and was told “her dog would die” and they gave her a lot of run around. She called another vet and they told her to bring her dog to them. She went to pick up her dog and waited 45 minutes, and finally ended up walking into the back to get her dog. When she went to the new clinic, they were very compassionate with her and told her that they saw the issue her dog had all the time and she would be fine. Her dog is now healthier than ever (Highland suggested having her put down). I lost confidence in bringing any of my pets to Highland after that bad experience. I need a vet that will look out for the interests of my pet at whatever it takes, and someone who goes above and beyond. Someone who shows compassion as well when dealing with certain situations. Horrible! Dr Baker was fantastic but the rest of the staff seem incompetent! My sister called to get an appointment for one of her dogs because the other had bitten him while playing rough and left a puncture wound the receptionist told her she has to call the health department who then would list him as an aggressive dog my sister didn’t call the health department and the receptionist later called back to tell her she didn’t need to call the health department and if she needed her dog to be seen today there would be an additional “emergency appointment” fee my sister told her not to bother she would be taking her dogs to a different vet from now on. When we took her two dogs and my dog in two weeks ago for shots no one except DR Baker seemed to know what they were doing Read Less

Dr. Bakker is very experienced , took care all the my pups,my Jojo could get killed if without her,bc other animal hospital try to tell us put Jojo down afer stay there 3 nights, we took our boy home then visit Dr. Bakker,she saves my boy! my boy almost back normal now! Read Less

Well, let me just say that we love the staff at Highland Animal Hospital. We have taken our pets there for many years. We see Dr. Smith most of the time.  My daughters dog has had issues from day one (puppy mill from pet store).  He has had allergies from the beginning. Skin, foods, you name it.As he aged, ear infections that didn't respond to antibiotics or traditional treatments,to the point of possibly needing a very expensive surgery with a specialist.  Dr. Smith asked if we wanted to try a more holistic approach with oils and herbs. We figured we had nothing to loose so gave it a try.  I can't tell you how happy we all were when this treatment actually cleared up his ear infection!  No surgery needed!! Let me be the first to say that the following took place a few months ago. Still, it's important to me that I relate the story on behalf of my dead cat. A veterinarian that is local to me referred me to Dr. Kathryn Smith from Highland Animal Hospital as a doctor specializing in alternative medicine (25 miles away). My cat had intestinal problems. I made an appointment to visit Dr. Smith and my first impression was good. It's what followed that left me shaking my head in disbelief. She gave me her email address and urged me to write to her with any questions or concerns I may have concerning my cat Wreba (short for Wrecking Ball). Well, a little more than a week later, I noticed my little kitty's rear legs giving out. This had never happened. So I called the office and left a message and followed-up with an email with the subject line: 'Wreba - very concerned'. I explained what was happening and asked her to please get back to me ASAP. The result? She has never responded to any of my emails. Several days later, someone from her office left a voice message asking me to call back during days when the doctor had hours. They didn't even address my concern from the email!Less than 48 hours later, my little companion suddenly fell on her side and began convulsing and died while I waited for this doctor to get back to me with advice on how to proceed. If these services came free of cost you could say "you get what you pay for". But her services are not free and to receive this type of callous disregard in exchange for one's hard earned money is outrageous.Looking back, it should have served as an indication - a big red flag - how, on my first visit, with a folder in my hands showing previous medical exams from other practices with all sorts of laboratory tests and reports, she wouldn't bother herself to look at any of it - even though I asked her twice! I'm a very trusting person and thought there maybe a good reason for that. But after not getting a call from her or a reply to my urgent email, it became clear that she never had any concern my kitty. I count it as a tragic mistake on my part for not wondering why she would not so much as glance at the medical records I was holding in my hands. They were very recent!I called this doctor several times to notify her that my cat had passed away but was unable to reach her on any of my attempts...she was never in the office (or so I was told).I caution anyone with a pet they love and wish to keep to steer clear from this particular doctor. My first impression was good but what followed was disastrous to my little one.Please have your pets examined and cared for by someone else! Read Less

The best place to take your pets. We took our pets there for the last fifteen years. We adopted cats from them. They are wonderful and caring people, very compassionate. I will NEVER take my animals to any other vet unless it is after Highlands regular business hours. My experience with them is nothing short of exceptional. Dr. Baker is by far the most caring and compassionate veterinarian I have ever met and truly has your pets best interest in mind. From the moment you walk in to the time you leave, the entire staff are always professional, courteous, and caring. I have been bringing my pets to Highland for years and have never had a bad experience. Three years ago I had to put my dog down and just this week my cat and I'm so thankful for their service.
