My experience with Canterbury Animal Hospital could not have been better. I had to put my Mary Jane (cat) down and had never been to Canterbury before. Dr. Estra made me feel good and comfortable about the decision I was making for Mary Jane's quality of life. She also took good care and loved on Mary the whole time she was in the room. Also I decided to get Mary's ashes back and when I picked them up they were in a beautiful box with a spot for a picture on the front of the box, a pack of wildflowers to spread in her name and they even took the liberty of making a paw print of her paw out of clay which I thought was very sweet. Thank you to Canterbury Animal Hospital for such good service and hospitality at such a hard time. Read Less

I'm sure any pet owner will appreciate knowing this!! Been using Canterbury for the past few years. The staff is always friendly, but never the same people. There have been several different girls in the office over the years. They seem very young and inexperienced. Very poor customer service! They do not return your call in a timely manner if at all.... Friday at 7:30 am, left a very urgent msg about my dog. He needed medical attention right away. He was having back pain and snapped at me when I touched him near his shoulder blades. Wouldn't eat or respond when I said "cookie or walk". He'd been like this since the day before. Waited for 3 hrs for a callback. NOTHING! Ended up having to call them again, only to be told the doctor was out of office. No other vet available. This was not the first time the vet has not been available. The only place they could refer us to was the most expensive place in town. The Latham ER clinic. It's their ONLY affliction. Note, I live in Delmar and EVERYONE knows they're fees are RIDICULOUSLY HIGH! 10 mins away from them is the Delmar Animal Hospital. Called them and wow, what a difference in service! They immediately requested his records and even called me back to confirm receipt. Then, got us in at 3p that afternoon. Visit and meds .....under $100!!! See More Read Less

I will not be returning to Canterbury Animal Hospital due to its lack of cleanliness and over priced services. My dog has never once had fleas until the moment we walked into the hospital and he started biting and scratching himself nonstop. We even found a flea crawling on him and the vet made us feel like it was our fault and that we had a dirty home. The floor looked as it had not been cleaned in days and then they wanted to charge us almost $200 for flea medicine. The young girl at the front desk was very kind, but their estimated bill to have our puppy neutered was $615.00 which seems very high for a 6 month old weighing 37 lbs. I kindly declined their services and went on to find much more reasonable priced facilities in the area. Read Less

I used to use Parkside Vet and found them to be too expensive and uncaring. I saw an advertisement for Canterbury in the Pride newsletter and decided to use them. My dog Quazzi, was in pain and walking on the front of his paws. I took him there and was led into a waiting room. My dog laid down as it was too painful for him to get up. When Dr. Estra came in she saw him on the floor and immediately got down to his level and started her examination. She determined he had arthritis and suggested a regimen of pain and arthritis medication, rather than the more expensive treatment of x-rays. She took some blood and said she would call. I thought she was kidding as I have never received a call from any Vet I have ever used. He responded very well and within a few days was up and walking and playing with his toys. She called to find out how he was. She said his blood work came back normal and to keep on giving him his medication. She gave me enough for a month and I had just gotten a refill when Quazzi had a relapse and could no longer get up to eat and go to the bathroom. I spent several agonizing nights staying up with Quazzi because he was in so much pain. I kept giving him pain medication, but to no avail and hearing him whimper during the night brought tears to my eyes and a knife through my heart. I decided to take him back to Canterbury for the last time. When I arrived, I was met with a gurney and both Dr. Estra and her assistant rolled Quazzi into his final resting place. Dr. Estra said he probably had a mild stroke and could no longer send signals to his extremities. I said I had spend many a night thinking about his future and knowing in my heart that this was no life for Quazzi. She assured me that he would feel no pain and would go to sleep and never wake up. I could not stay, but said my good-byes and could barely see my way home. Within a week I received a package from Dr. Estra and inside was a caster mold of Quazzi's paw, which is now framed and hanging on my wall. The level of compassion and dedication to her patients and their owners is outstanding. She made me feel like Quazzi was her own. If I ever decide to get another dog, or if my cats ever need assistance, there will be no question as to where I will bring them. Read Less

Horrible Experience While in Delmar on Tuesday with my mother, and daughter, visiting my brother, my mother had the misfortune of hitting a cat. My brother told us to bring the cat to Canterbury because it was close to where he lives. We were all very upset by what happened and very anxious for the cat to recieve medical care. When we reach Canterbury, the attitude we were met with was unbelieveable. I felt from the moment we told them that it wasn't our cat, the cat had no value. They asked if I was willing to take responsibility for the cat, and I told them yes, hoping that I would see the vet jump into action, and yet nothing. I don't know if she didn't believe me or what. But as the cat lay there bleeding, she's speaking to me about him having no collar, no chip, it's going to cost between $500-$700 (how she knew this without even taking an x-ray is beyond me). Then she wanted to know what street the cat was hit on. She wanted Animal Control called. I finally raised my voice and asked her what the problem was, was she concerned about finances, is that why the cat is going unattended. She then told my daughter she was sorry that she had to see me behave like that, and then asked us to leave. After a little voice raising I did leave, and when I got into my vehicle, I said to my 9 yr old, "Mommy never cursed" and she said "I know that" so I asked her, " what were you thinking Brianna" and she said " I was thinking, why wasn't the woman helping the cat"? My brother later called to inquire about the cat, and was told, animal control came and the cat was euthanized. Financially I consider myself blessed, and because I was ridden with guilt, would have paid whatever to have cared for this cats recovery. I am appauled by this vet's behavior, and still heavy hearted for that cat. Mrs.Gail C. Laier Read Less
