If I could give this place a negative review I would. I have never been talked down to in such a way that I was this past fourth of July by Dr. Karapet. We brought our 9 month old puppy here after potentially ingesting Tylenol while we weren't home. We had previously brought our older dog here a little over a year ago and had a horrible experience, my dog was now afraid of the vet, had to be muzzled for shots, and no longer trusted new people. That being said, we went against our better judgment and brought our puppy here at 11pm on fourth of July, not knowing what other 24 hour vets were open.Upon getting here, the woman at the front desk was very nice and understanding and informed us that we needed to call animal poison control so that they could tell the Vet what needed to be done. While we were on hold with poison control, Dr. Karapet comes out and asks us to put the dog on the scale, continuously calling my male dog a female even after I had corrected her multiple times. When my husband asked how much the dog weighed, Dr. Karapet very rudely told him to do the math himself to convert it from kg to lbs. She initially told us she did not want to induce vomiting due to us being unable to pinpoint how long ago he had ingested the Tylenol. Within the same breath she said "Oh, while your waiting I'll just induce vomiting and see what happens".  I said to her I would feel more comfortable if we just waited to hear from poison control to find out what the next step was - since they had me call them. She VERY rudely told me "Well I am a doctor and if you want to question me then that is on you". I explained that she had contradicted herself by saying she didn't want to induce vomiting and then 2 seconds later said she wanted to and to see what would happen.  She then told me "I have 4 other dogs in the back that are worth my time more then your dog if you don't want to listen", while rolling her eyes so hard at us I swear it had to hurt. Thank god we decided to wait for poison control because they informed us that inducing vomiting wouldn't have don't anything for our dog because it had been over a certain amount of time.  Needless to say we left that establishment, and went to another one in Valley Stream which was absolutely amazing and extremely compassionate. I have no intention on returning to this horrific place ever again.  I can only imagine how this woman treats the animals in the back that don't have a voice and who are left there already scared and alone. I have never met someone so condescending and rude in my entire life, especially to people who are bringing a member of their family there and are already stressed and upset.TAKE YOUR ANIMAL ANY WHERE ELSE BUT HERE!! Our 3 month old Pomeranian was acting fine one minute and then the next would not stop whimpering and crying upon being touched by us or trying to rest her head to sleep.   She spit up and seemed to have trouble breathing and was holding her neck out in an awkward position.  She was also drooling uncontrollably.   It was 3 am and the closest 24 hour vet was New York vet specialty center.   We arrived to an empty clinic and the employee at the front desk was cordial and checked us in quickly and immediately took our dog to the back. We have no complaints about his professionalism.  We soon met with Dr. Karapet who asked us for a timeline leading up to our visit. Her questions were very accusatory and she seemed to ask the same questions over and over in different ways if she seemed to not like our response (mainly asking when the last time she ate was).   She went in the back to check our dog while we had no access to her. We could hear her yelping in pain but could not see what was happening to her.   Dr. Karapet soon came out and said that our dog had warmed up to her and was acting normal after having moved her neck/head around during examination. She kept repeating that our puppy could just have been nauseous which would have caused the excessive drooling but that she would do an x Ray just in case because she was unable to open her mouth and look into it.   We consented as we were concerned about our puppy.  Dr Karapet came out, leaned over the counter and in a very smug tone proceeded to ask me what kind of earrings I wear (twice) to which I replied none and asked why.  The x rays came back showing that our puppy had swallowed the back of an earring. We believe it was stuck in her throat and Dr. Karapet unintentionally dislodged it during her exam.   Dr. Karapet then proceeded to show us the X-ray and asked if we were aware of the cost of the xrays and consultation. She also asked if I had insurance and was more focused on telling me to purchase insurance. I cut her off and told her I didn't care about that right now and was more interested in finding out what could be done to help our dog.  She walked out and came back with the bill for x rays which included a $250 radiologist reading fee in addition to the actual xrays and exam ($400) and then quoted us $5k for an endoscopy to be done and if that failed $8k for surgery to remove the earring back.  I told her I would not be paying for either of those procedures and she very rudely replied "You're the one who said money isn't an issue". I did not say that at any point and I asked to pay the existing bill and for my dog to be returned. She walked out and this time slammed the door behind her. I called another vet to get a second opinion (now knowing what was wrong with her) while waiting practically another hour to pay and leave. That vet told me that an earring back was not serious and would most likely pass on its own. He advised us to give it 24-48 hours and come see him if it didn't pass to discuss other options. Meanwhile Dr Karapet made it seem as if my dog was going to die if I didn't act immediately. We were even made to sign a statement stating that this "may be a life threatening condition for our dog and that they were very concerned about our dog and hoped we would get her the medical attention she needs" before we were allowed to leave. The earring back passed on its own within 24 hours. Read Less

Brought my dog in after she was attacked by a pitbull. I was about 15 minutes in the waiting room before being brought into the exam room by a vet tech. The tech was extremely sympathetic and gave us the heads up "don't let the vet talk to into doing anything crazy because you will be charged a lot of money if so". We waited for over an hour in the exam room for the vet to come in. Ended up going out to the secretary to ask how much longer it would be, and was told there were other emergencies that came in that need to be seen first. Understandable since my dogs wounds were not that serious but a heads up that our wait was going to be longer than originally expected would've been nice. Eventually we were given a few options of treatment, of course it ranged from sedation to treat her to just first aid and antibiotics. Overall, the vet and staff were very nice. I just wish the wait wasn't so long or we were at least given an update instead of feeling like we were forgotten about. Our bill wasn't bad either, just be aware of your treatment options  before deciding on what to do! Read Less

First and foremost, I hope the "management" at this place, Cheryl, dies the way our dog did this past weekend, alone and lying in her own piss and poop. There are some amazing good people working here, like Mike doing PT and Leigh(Lee) not sure of spelling, who is also amazing as well. I get that they are a business and have to make money but just like at hospitals for people, there is something more than that when it comes to medical care of a pet or person. They do have some uncaring older front desk staff as well. I'm not sure if that woman Linda is mad to be past retirement age and still having to work but she darn sure should not be working the front desk of this place. Our dog, Max, was cared for through a rescue and my wife left early Tuesday morning to drop him off for an appointment before work. Because the rescue owes money on some old bills, despite having more recently paid over $17K worth of payments, they refused to see Max. This manager, Cheryl, 100% deserves worse than Max's fate; as he died 5 days later. You do not belong in a pet medical field or any field. And screw you for questioning if my wife has ever worked and talking about how a business needs to run. You clearly have no clue how to run this type of business, clear from the multiple complaints. I hope hell for you is spent being pissed on by the multitude of pets you have clearly failed. Read Less

Upon arriving to the New York Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center with my cat who had swallowed some fishing line, there was no one at the desk. After waiting over 15 minutes to get checked in, we sat down in the waiting room. As we are waiting to be called in we overheard a vet, Kira Perdone, yelling at a couple whose cat was very sick. They were both crying and saying that they could not afford to pay for the cat to stay over and their mortgage. This doctor showed them no sympathy and told them that they were killing their cat. After waiting an hour in the waiting room, we were called in. The vet tech (I'm not sure of his name, Santiago i think ) was amazing and sympathetic. When the doctor came in, she did not even introduce herself. She told us that my cat would need x-rays and if the line is stuck in his intestines, that he may need emergency surgery, which costs $6,000. After doing xrays, it was revealed that there was no blockage. When the vet told me this, she stated "but I could cut him just in case if you want, ." She said this after having told me that the surgery was at least $6,000. I said absolutely not and thank god i didn't because my cat ended up passing the string. She suggested that he stay overnight to be monitored, so i agreed. The following day, my boyfriend agreed to a barium test for $512 to determine whether or not there was a blockage, which he charged to his credit card. When i first brought my cat to the vet i signed an estimate of $1500. The vet and the receptionist both told me that i would receive credit back for procedures and medication, as well as for time that was not used but that it was a just in case situation. When i went to pick up my cat, I was given a final bill of $883, after i was refunded for procedures, time, and medications that was not used. I received a different bill a month later in the mail with numerous other charges that I did not agree to be added to the bill. The receptionists, especially Sheryl Ferrin, who is actually a hospital administrator, have been very unprofessional with me, telling me that they don't understand what "my issue is and why I can't just pay the bill." I have spent a lot of time attempting to rectify this situation and they even gave me a refund of $158 because they admitted to not informing me of the procedure or the charge. Who knows how many more we're added because i didn't pay for the $6,000 surgery. In addition, when I explained to the receptionist that I am refusing to pay the charges because I had never heard of them, she replied "so you're telling me you knew that these procedures were being done and you just don't want to pay for them?" This was so unprofessional and couldn't be farther from the truth. If I had been informed and knew that these services were conducted I would have no problem paying for them. I am a full time teacher and don't have the time or energy to dispute charges with an animal hospital who wants to charge people additional money after they have already made an agreement. AVOID THIS VET AT ALL COSTS!! I came in on a Saturday afternoon for something that my regular vet would have been able to easily manage, but they had just closed for the day.  After 15 minutes I was so worried about the competency of the staff that I was ready to grab my dog and run out.  Dr. Pesek will go down as one of the worst Vets I have ever encountered.  She complained about not working well under pressured (this is an Emergency Vet) and told me that she was glad I would take my dog elsewhere because "she didn't want to be around if something bad happened."  It took days to get the discharge report that I was told would be sent right after I left - and the record shows the complete incompetence of Dr. Pesek.  Feel lucky I was able to get my dog out of there before she could do anymore harm.  Please don't take your pet to this vet. Do not take your pet here.Long story,I have a 10 year old golden retriever, who in the corse of the last year has had several accidents (urinating) near the back door. My regular vet has ran blood/urine tests with inconclusive results. This was an issue I was monitoring and did not deem it to be an emergency. My furry friend has a habit of eating socks. No matter how careful you are with laundry, he will find them. On Tuesday 9/18/18, I woke up to find a pile of vomit containing a sock and a huge puddle of urine in the kitchen. My furry friend didn't touch his food from the night before and I determined that it might be time to go to the vet. I brought my dog to his normal vet, but the X-ray machine was down and was told to go to an Emergency Vet.I arrived in the late morning/early afternoon with two separate issues- the accidents and the possible obstruction with another sock.I was at the vet for several hours, until approximately 8pm. The vet conducted X-rays, an ultrasound, and a urinalysis. The X-ray showed two possible foreign objects- one in his stomach- which the vet induced vomiting and was successful. The second was in his intestines. The doctor issued me an estimate which was approximately $1500. After I paid the $1500 dollars, the vet asked the receptionist if she billed me out for another shot, which she hadn't. So I got charged again for $60 (You would think that after $1500 dollars and sitting in the vet for 8 hours, they would comp it)! The vets tests came back inconclusive for cancer, and the vet wanted to keep him over night for observation ($750+), which I objected to, deeming it completely unnecessary. I was told I would get a call back with the results of the radiologists review of the X-rays in a day or two.On 6/20, I called in the morning to follow up regarding the X-rays. I was told that the doctor was unavailable at the moment and she will call me back shortly. Six hours later, no call. I called back, and was told that the doctor is evaluating a pet and would call me back shortly. An hour later, I call back again, this time I'm told that the doctor is completing reports for the day and will call before she leaves. I call back AGAIN, and demand to talk to the doctor. No apologies from the doctor for the delays, and she tells me that for some reason the results aren't in the computer and she will PERSONALLY follow up for me and I will hear something in a day or two... never got that call.On 9/27, I call at approximately 9am, and am informed that no doctor is in but to leave a message and I'll get a call as soon as they are. No calls all day! I call at 7pm, and get told the doctor is in a procedure again and she will call me when she is done.Very unprofessional and only care about taking your money. I spent over $1500 to basically get my dog to throw up the sock, which he would have probably done on his own. They could not give me a straight answer as far as the accidents are concerned, but recommended that I come in the following day to get another X-ray. Go somewhere else for the sake of your pet, your wallet, and your sanity.I won't post the vets name because I won't attack someone personally, but this is completely unacceptable!!! Read Less

I don't leave reviews but I just have to share this DISGUSTING experience I had this morning. This was my first and LAST time ever bringing my pet here. Around 6 this morning my dog ingested some chemical (later I found out it's non lethal, but can be if too much is ingested) and my mother and i rushed him to this emergency room. When the vet finally decided to speak to us concerning the circumstances of my dog a full 30 mins later, she asked if we wanted to speak in the lobby or in the back, I told her the lobby since there was nobody else in there at the time. My mother does not speak very well English and obviously was not understanding everything she was saying, so I obviously was the one listening and doing the talking  talking. My dog didn't have a leash on (since we rushed out of the house) and he started to leave from where we were talking. My mother excuses herself to go grab my dog and this nasty excuse for a veterinarian says, and I quote, "let's go in the back because you guys aren't listening to me", in the nastiest, rudest tone of voice. Litterally as I'm standing there LISTENING staring her directly in the face. Then proceeded to walk away from us, sit down and tells me it's going to cost around 1000 to keep him there for 12 hours. Mind you, she did not even take a single look at my dog before giving me this price. ANOTHER 30 MINS go by as she's "in the back writing an estimate". Still nobody has looked at my dog. We ask a nurse if there is anything we can do at home/any medications or advice on how to monitor him. $1000+ is not something I have just sitting around. She leaves to go tell the vet, she walks in and this character has the audacity to say, again I quote, "you guys have to make up your mind, this is an emergency room". No other patient in sight the whole time, it was empty, this was 6 in the morning. The fact I had to wait a total of an HOUR before my dog was seen is disgusting. And then quoted 1 grand before even taking one look at him too see what condition he's in? Oh, now it's an emergency room? I took my dog and left. I genuinely believe this woman is a rasict. I've never been treated so poorly in my life. This woman, whatever her name is, should not be working in this field if she hates her life this much. Or at least provide her some training in customer service because she desperately needs it. I took my dog to the amazing West Hills Animal Hospital in Huntington where he was very well taken care of. Take your pet elsewhere. The hunger for money comes before the life of your pet. Sad. Read Less

This is a long review but worth reading if you care about your animal.brought our dog here on referral from primary vet b/c our dog was in distress due to something heart related & this facility houses the same cardiologist that we were seeing.we arrived, handed our dog over,he was taken to the back room, filled out paperwork, waited 45 min til we had to ask what was going on. Finally dr shaver called us into a room and discussed what their findings were and what they were going to do.They Couldn't get blood work quickly-had to redo it 2x. Hours later we waited to c our dog b4 going home for the night, went to see him In the back room, it was warm/humid, smelled, cluttered and dirty, other dogs were drooling heavily in cages. I figured it was the end of the day, and my dog was hooked up to iv, catheter. didn't want 2 mov him to another facility, I was scared his health would decline and I trusted that my primary doctor knew what care he had referred us to.He passed away the following morning. When picking him up doctor shaver Said they probably did ultrasound yesterday right before his gall bladder ruptured  and created a septic infection in his abdomen-like she's the dog whisperer and she made that assumption. No proof of that actually happening.dr shaver also said that we would be getting $ back. We didn't care, we would of paid anything for our dog to live. As we wheeled out our dog to the car a tech told us 350 would b refunded. 1 week later no bill emailed/mailed, we called, was told it would be sent. (need a bill to send to ins.)2 weeks later, call again, told we would receive a call from billing. Never received a call.Couple days later we receive a bill in the mail for 2000, no reduction.3 weeks later, call at 1030, told no one from billing was in. I call later on that day at 630 and was told to call back from 9-5 when billing is available. My husband calls again, asks that Cheryl, from billing, to call him b/c us calling during business hours isn't working.Next day, call at 10, told Cheryl is on a business call. We tell them we're done, we will reverse the charges on credit card and maybe that will get their attention. Cheryl calls back and leaves voicemail saying she was told to call us back because we were upset and doesn't know why and to call her back. we get a hold of Cheryl, she is beyond rude and defensive. My husband try's to tell her what we have been going thru the past couple weeks and she cuts him off and says she's "aware but you can tell me if it makes you feel better". She tells us she never got any of the notes. asks us if we have the dates/times/names of people we spoke to when leaving messages. Sounds like a problem you need to take up with reception, don't know why you expect us to take notes like your receptionist should be, why would We lie? Wanna see a copy of our phone records? She tells us we can go ahead and refuse the credit card charge because they've dealt with that before (red flag). No sympathy for the fact our dog passed away and we r having to deal with this on top of it. She says she has no notes on the 350 reduction and that all the charges are matching up to what services he received. my husband asks to speak to dr shaver. she is very sympathetic/apologetic but seems to have amnesia b/c she doesn't remember telling us about $ Back either. I understand it was 3 weeks ago, maybe that's why they've been dodging, so that they can use the "I don't remember saying that" excuse. She explains she has just started working there and she's not happy with the way billing has treated us in our situation. She then says because our dog was in their care for over 6 hours we get charged for full day. Ok fine, then why tell us we r getting money back then? This whole thing has me second guessing the care Brutus received and making me feel beyond guilty for trusting them.So make sure you have time on your hands and always be one step ahead, take names and get hand written proof because their words mean nothing and you'll need proof. If they are this unorganized, rude, cold hearted in billing/reception I wonder how the rest of the staff is behind closed doors. And if you ever have to deal with billing/Cheryl...good luck. I am so happy that I was told about New York Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center by  family members who had to bring their dog there for surgery and treatment.  When my cat got very ill and her vet tried all she could to treat her she suggested that I take the cat to an internist.  I immediately thought of the NY Specialty because of the concern and expertise they had for my cousin's dog.  I was not disappointed.  From the receptionists on the phone, to the tech who took my cat into the treatment room and took a thorough history of Ella to the vet who treated her, everything was done so that Ella was comfortable and so that I knew exactly what was needed and going to be done.  Dr. Shabbing, the internist Ella saw, knew exactly what was wrong as soon as he saw the ultrasound he did on her, explained the situation to me and told me what the best route of treatment for her would be. He encourages follow-up phone calls to share and check up on Ella's progress which makes me feel secure that he truly cares about pets.  I could not recommend this facility more highly. Read Less

When my dog was a puppy it was discovered that the growth plate in her right leg had stopped growing, which meant that at some point, if the issue was not addressed, the leg would eventually have to be amputated. I searched for a surgeon that could address the problem but no one would suggest any other procedure other than amputation. I took her to a surgeon who provided me with the contact info for two surgeons who could help her. One Vet was located in the Animal Medical Center in NYC. She was very helpful, but said that the procedure involved would require my dog Button to be caged for up to 24 hours per day, as she was very active, and her activity would not be good for healing. I then contacted the second surgeon at NYVSC, Dr. Arnold Lessor. I made an appointment with him, and he explained that he could perform Angular Deformity Surgery that would help her. He explained that she would not require to be crated for long periods of time, and also talked about his success rate. He advised that it was not an easy process, but good results would be attainable. At the time, which was about 5 years ago, only 3 surgeons performed this procedure. Bottom line; the surgery was done, Button recovered great, and although she does suffer from premature arthritis, which I was made aware would occur, she leads a very good quality of life, and has all of her legs. The Hospital is great, as I have taken her there for other issues, and Dr. Lessor was great as well. We were very fortunate to find NYVSC, and Dr. Lessor. Read Less

Mike who cared for my puppy overseeing his PT therapy was professional, kind and knowledgeable. The entire staff of vet techs were available at all times ready to answer any questions. My lab puppy is now 19months and runs as if he never had orthopedic surgery on both his hind legs. I would highly recommend the services this organization offers. They did a great job caring for my pup! Thank you NYVSC. Read Less

I cannot say enough good things about this hospital. I had to rush one of my shepherd's in for bloat at 10:30 PM and essentially, they saved her life. Dr. Carr was very helpful and instrumental in seeing that I would be able to afford the cost of such an expensive operation by reducing the fees. Any other hospital would have possibly put the dog down as bloat is fatal and, the stomach had twisted already. I was very lucky that night. The staff no matter what hour is always pleasant and very compassionate. There are emergency vet hospitals that maybe closer but, I have had such great experiences with this hospital 3 times in the last 3 years, I wouldn't go anywhere else. I would recommend them to anyone without hesitation. Read Less

I brought my very sick dog in devastated because she became very sick very quickly. I told them I had little money and they did not mention the free first vet exam coupon but said they would try to keep costs down. They had difficulty examining her because she was a big dog in pain and did not ask me if I could muzzle her which I can easily no matter what the situation. Ran blood wirk and found nothing. They gave her drugs for pain but then could not figure out where the problem was because of the drugs numbing her m; they gave an educated guess as to where she was having a problem. Suggested a neuro exam somewhere else for about 8k said surgery would cost 10k and that I could not leave her there and that she probably wouldn’t get up again. I had to decide on the spot to send her to heaven. My vital healthy vibrant dog just 36 hours ago and ended up paying close to $800 for it. Not happy. Read Less

I brought my 10 week old puppy in after he seemed pretty lethargic and sore from two vaccines. I was worried he was having a reaction. The nurse/vet tech was so sweet. She came out to the waiting area and took his temperature and heart rate and assured me that the side effects were normal and explained what an actual allergic reaction would look like. She said her dog reacted the same way. She assured me he would be fine in 24 hours and lo and behold he was back to normal by the morning She didn't charge me or waste my time or money. The staff here is excellent.  Our Ginger (a golden we loved with the best fur ever) was there last week and was diagnosed with a fatal heart tumor/cancer. There were 4 people there dealing with all sorts of emergencies and other duties and they all did an amazing job.  Ginger was a good kind loving creature who just wanted to be loved and go for walks.  Her time came too soon, but if she had to go, the nice people at New York Veterinary made sure it was as bearable as could be.  The negative reviews are not accurate - another nearby ER once charged $800 to simply put our prior dog under anesthesia and determine she had a loose tooth (she had bleeding in her mouth) - rather than just pat her on the head and take a look - now that's greed.   New York Veterinary is not like that. They have typically charged us less than the regular vet.  Also, think about the nice staff people for  a second - 80-90 % of the pets they see are dying, going to die soon, have had a bad accident that will require tough surgery, or have a problem so bad the owner has rushed in...so they are dealing with the tough stuff, not a routine exam or puppy visit... On a positive note, we should all try to be the person our dog thinks were are.. Read Less

I wish I could give 10 stars. My dog Chuck who recently passed was a patient of NYVS. We found this place from a recommendation from a friend when Chuck started to have skin allergies. We saw Dr. White-Withers (dermatology) and she was nothing short of knowledgeable and amazing. We trusted her and followed a regimen that worked for Chuck and kept his skin issues under control. Chuck also suffered seizures. We battled his seizures for 3 years and wound up putting him on seizure meds this year after a few trips to the emergency room from having grand mal ones that were horrific. I can't say enough positive things about their emergency services. Dr. Johnson in particular. She is an amazing doc. Always thorough, honest and straight to the point. I was always told a low and high for any services and never paid a penny more. When it comes to pets and emergency you have to expect to pay a bill. It comes with having a pet and this place never made me feel like I was being taking advantage of. Long story short, our Chuck passed away and succumbed to his seizures on 6/16/17..in that moment I felt the compassion from everyone that worked there. Yet again Dr. Johnson hugged me, felt my pain and I know that Chuck was in good hands while he was there and took his last breath. She also helped my moms dog a few months ago when he needed emergency services and again, just thorough and had all our questions answered. THANK YOU to the staff and Dr. Johnson! I really wanted to give a good review here as my first impression was very positive. Professional intake interview by a competent receptionist, engaged veterinary assistants. My confidence faded, however, after we were told we'd have to pay an emergency fee of $125 prior to seeing a vet, then were left to wait (with what we suspected was a cat experiencing poisoning) for another hour. After explaining our previously perfectly healthy 5-year old cat's decline into vomiting, drooling, head-bobbing, non-responsiveness, dilated pupils, strained breathing within a period of a few hours to the vet, and that we suspected that he was experiencing some kind of poisoning, she told us that she suspected congestive heart failure due to a thickened heart muscle instead and suggested x-rays, MRI, clinic stay and other expensive procedures to simply confirm her diagnosis at prohibitive expenses for our budget ($1,000 - 2,000 before any actual treatment which would have to last throughout the cat's remaining life span). We described the symptoms and their sudden onset over and over again and eventually got her to provide an anti-nausea shot and an expectorant to expel fluid from our cat's lungs and got to sign a waiver that we were taking the cat home at our own risk. The treating vet made it clear that we should not expect our cat to live through the night. Needless to say, he not only lived through the night but made a 100% turnaround within the next 24 hours. I then put a call in to the vet confirming that he was probably poisoned due to our neighbors spraying weed killer, and should I still worry about the fluid in his lungs though? I finally received a call-back from a different vet at the clinic over a day later, stating that I should no longer worry about the lungs due to the expectorant provided , but definitely should bring the cat back for a variety of tests to determine for sure what caused his illness in the first place. Say what??? Read Less

Like a real ER, often the goal is to stabilize the patient and do preliminary tests. You can spend thousands of dollars here and your pet might still have a problem you will follow up w/ your normal vet. My dog had one planned surgery here and one emergency surgery. In both cases everything was a great success. Bottom line: This place is very expensive, but does provide true 24 hour emergency care. Read Less

It's a shame I have to give this place one star just so I can write this review, but out of genuine concern for animals coming to this place it seems necessary. This is the furthest thing from a Vets office/hospital. This is a disgraceful, money-hungry "business" full of corrupt, unprofessional staff who claim to care for the animals that people bring to them. My father and I brought a kitten to this vet that was found lying in street, clearly in distress and potentially injured. Shortly after the kitten was brought in, we were told very briefly from the vet that the cat had low blood sugar (hypoglycemic) and its body temperature was low, so to help it they were giving it IV fluid of sugar water and keeping it warm with a heating pad, which is great and raised our hopes that this kitten would survive. Shortly after this, all this vet could offer now to continue to help this distressed cat was slapping down a nice bill, depending on how much we really cared for the cat and how much we were willing to spend, ranging from $800-$1400, which is a disgrace when you take into consideration that she was a stray cat and we were just trying to help it as much as we could. From now on, the bill was the only thing discussed by the vet and staff at this place. Not what was further wrong with this kitten or what we could do further to help it, but how much we were willing to pay for their "service" to us. After refusing to pay an absurd amount of money, which was originally brought in out of the goodness of our hearts, we quickly realized that this place was all about the money and nothing else. After we told them we were going to take the kitten home so we could take it somewhere else to get checked, the vet quickly changed her tune about the stability of this cat. As we were handed the cat, we were then told that she had blood in her eyes and it appeared to them that she wasn't going to make it. Now both our heads are spinning because just 15 minutes ago, we were told by this same exact vet that this kitten was going to be okay with constant monitoring, food, and warmth. Ah, finally, the story makes sense. They wanted to string us on for the next day, get our money, when they already knew that the cat was going to pass. They merely just wanted to keep her "stable" for the next 24 hours with our $1400. We took the kitten home and shortly after arriving she passed away peacefully in our care. I hope after reading this you all think twice about bringing your beloved pets here. Read Less

It's been nothing but positive.  Specialized pet care no matter where you go is costly.  The trick is to know when you've reasonably done all you could for your pet without going to the poorhouse.  To me that's the hardest part. Woman at front desk on Sunday evening was so nice and when I arrived, there was minimal wait. I had high hopes. The Veterinary Doctor I saw had never heard of Medrol, a steroid drug that my cat had been on for years, and didn't know that calcitriol was used in conjunction with kidney issues. My cat had been straining to poop and was extremely frail and was in failing health. This Dr suggested using anesthesia if I decided to have any of the loose stool removed after advising me that my cat had significant heart murmur. I couldn't leave fast enough. I realize Sunday night isn't optimal time to see choice of Doctors but it is disconcerting that a Vet isn't familiar with medications. My poor little girl eventually managed to pass stool on her own the next day but her time had come. If I could give NYVSEC a 10, I would. On December 21, 2014, Ringo suffered a severe spinal cord injury and was diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease. At the time, I was aware of NYVSEC. So he was rushed to another emergency hospital and required emergency surgery. I provided all of his therapy privately because It was cost effective. 6 months later, I wanted to meet with a surgeon and physical therapy to find out how Ringo was progressing and what percentage of recovery will he possibly make. I google searched emergency centers and came upon this hospital. I called and explained my situation and needs to the receptionist. She happily made an appointment for Ringo with a surgeon and physical therapist. At the appointment, the doctor and physical therapist examined Ringo and were very impressed with what they had seen. I explained all of the therapies I had provided for him. I was told that "every choice I had made would have been exactly what they would have recommended". They also suggested a few more exercises that I could include. The physical therapist also suggested a therapy that would require me to bring Ringo there weekly. But she followed up by giving me an alternative exercise that I could do at home instead. When I went to leave to pay my bill, I found that it had been waived. There aren't enough words of gratitude to express how incredibly I was treated. This animal hospital is clearly interested in the help and wellness of animals and puts them first. I was so touched by their kindness. Recently, I started a nonprofit called Ringo's Road to Recovery. I was inspired by the kindness of so many when Ringo was in need of help. I look forward to the day I can pay it forward and help an animal receiving care from NYVSEC.Read Less

I have a 10 year old golden retriever (Reggie) he wasn't feeling great for a few days so I took him to my Regular vet and had blood work done, the results said that Reggie was a little Anemia but my Vet wasn't sure what exactly was going on so he recommended going to New York Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center to have an ultrasound on Reggies stomach, So I made an appointment for the next day. When I got there the woman at the front Desk were very friendly.I waited about 15 min then I went into the room with reggie and I first met a young girl that was super friendly and then Dr Todd Carter came in to see Reggie,He was really nice and he explained what he thinks should be done for reggie,so then I waited a little while for them to come back in the room to get Reggie so he can have an ultrasound of his stomach.I went into the waiting room and waited about 25 minutes then the girl brought Reggie into the room so the Dr could explain to me what he seen from the Ultrasound, It wasn't the best news I wanted to hear but at least Dr Carter explained everything to me,I felt very comfortable talking to the Dr and I thought he was very sincere too.I just want to Thank everyone at the Center for being very nice to me,I may not have Dealt with everyone there but the the woman at the front desk are the ones that greet people when they come there and it is so important for them to be friendly,They were very friendly and I want to Thank them for that because they could really wreck a business, If I ever need an emergency center again I would go back there again.Thank you Dr Carter and the staff....Great people. I am giving this two stars only because they were open on a Sunday and I was able to get a prescription for antibiotics for my dog, who I took there for blood in urine.  It took over an hour to see a doctor because they were too busy trying to save a cat who was in a life threatening situation. I felt for a $125 exam fee, my dog wasn't looked over too good.  I brought in a urine sample, but they wanted to charge me to inflict my dog with a needle to get a "sterile sample". I was also given a list of procedures they recommended that would be over $700. It was like pulling teeth and asking many questions to find out it would be a cheaper and quite a safe option to just get an antibiotic and follow up with my own vet. I asked how much the office visit and prescription was, and was told $125 for the visit and $80 for antibiotic. But when I went to check out, I saw they charged me $170 for the antibiotic!!  I mean, WTF?!  I told the woman I felt like I was being raped. I told her doctor said $80 and I want an explanation from the doctor about conflicting prices. The woman never brought the doctor out and told me that $80 was for a one week script and they recommend two weeks. I told her I would pay for 1 week, and was refunded $90 on credit card. Then they accidentally stapled the bill for the cat patient to my credit card receipt. That cat had to be euthanized, but not before charging that poor distraught woman $500+!!!  I feel like they take advantage of people in emergency situations. I will NEVER bring my dog here again!  If I ever have an emergency situation again, I'll call my friend's daughter or my cousin's daughter first, who are vets. Or go somewhere else where they really care about the animal and the owner and not so greedy. A place with a moral compass. Read Less

In November of 2015 we rushed our  12 year old doxie Charlotte there because she woke up and was unable to walk. We brought her in and after some tests it was determined that she needed surgery on her back immediately.  Surgery of this kind is never a guaranteed success and we were prepared for several possible outcomes.  She was in there for 4 days and the staff was great about keeping us updated, answering our questions and giving us practical advice. I probably called there every day with questions for about a week or so after we brought her home too. Today, Charlotte has made a full recovery. Yes, it is expensive (pet insurance helps in many cases) but any animal ( or human) emergency room visit is expensive. Suggestion: Bring someone else who can help you retain the information you're given and even take notes. Many times you will need to make quick decisions on behalf of your pet and it  can be very difficult to think clearly when you are concerned about your pet but also have to consider the financial implications of your decision. It helps to have someone with you that can remain calm and supportive and help you  make the best decision for you and your pet. In summary, Dr. Carb is an excellent surgeon and the entire staff there is knowledgeable, friendly, and patient. If you have an emergency situation with your pet do not hesitate,  take them to New York Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center. Read Less

The front desk staff is second to none.  They are wonderful.  Dr carver and Dr Lesser are caring, thorough and were a pleasure to speak with.  As an animal rescuer I deal with many vets and the animals often need emergency care.  I am so grateful I found Ny veterinary specialists.9/1/16.  I took my dog in as an emergency.  He needed life saving emergency surgery.  Dr Carver is amazing.  She called me every single morning while my dog was hospitalized.  The technicians are wonderful.  The dr on call the night we picked him up was so truthful and knowledgable.  They even issued us a $300 credit because I overpayed days before.  Just incredible people. My dog came here last year with a limp that wasn't healing after a few weeks. She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, and the vet and I discussed treatment options. She came home with me that day, but her condition rapidly worsened (not the vet's fault). I brought her back a few days later, and decided to go with surgery. I must've called 100 times in the few days between dropping her off and her surgery. The front desk staff always took my calls, gave me updates when I asked for them, and was truly kind and compassionate. Unfortunately, my dog ended up passing away, despite the attempts to save her life. The staff handled it gracefully, and listened to me when I was upset. I'm forever thankful to them for handling everything so well, despite a bad outcome for her. Read Less

Bad bad very bad place. Full of incompetents. The doctors are so young, I bet they are not graduate yet. They changed me $508.00 and didn't resolved the problem to my persian cat.He still breathing bad. The doctor did the blood test and the radiography. And she didn't find nothing bad, so she started to say that the cat could have some kind of neurological issues and she wanted to keep him there under control. Today I will go to my vet and see what really is going on. Anyway I spent a lot of money and didn't resolve the problem, what a shame. Really here is very difficult to find a very good veterinary able to treat persian cat. They are just good to charge money. What a sad. Read Less

This place is horrible. First of all they know exactly nothing about english bulldogs. So if you have an english bulldog i suggest you go someplace else. Second they of course will charge you an arm and a leg just to find out your dog has a simple ear infection ($550) . Third the vets their were very rude, suggesting things that were simply not affordable for myself and them looking down on you. Im sorry mrs. Veterinarian if i had all of the money in the world i would do everything but i dont! Needless to say they were expecting my dog not to make it threw the night. I no my dog and they dont , my dog was scared to be in their and she was sick , she had an inner ear infection that i figured out . So they gave me medicine for it (mind you $550) and sent me on my way. Guess what my dog is in Great health . So thanks for the expensive medicine doc and the extremely unprofessional mannor! I don't really know how I feel about this place.  I would prefer to not to come here but if I absolutely must I will.  Be prepared to wait a long time even if the waiting room is empty.  The first time I came here with my dog I didn't really think that the care that I reviewed was good.  The doctor I saw didn't seem to really know what they were doing and I felt the right treatment was not given.  The second time I came with my cat and I felt like I was just given a textbook answer to the problem basically the easiest treatment without alternatives.  My cat got his tail caught in the door and the vet was going to do surgery which is fine but after getting a second opinion I was told a lot more information about the reasons and even other options like waiting it and seeing if it started to heal on it's own.  Also the dr didn't even read the chart and it was only after I brought up concerns about his heart murmur and anesthesia that the dr actually realized the additional risk.  Had I not brought it up I fear that if he had gotten surgery there the necessary precautions to monitor him more closely would not have been taken.  Also the doctors here just don't seem to care and aren't very warm. My adopted Yorkie, Penelope, needed surgery for her liver shunt. I was very disappointed with alot of vets and was going to have her surgery done at another hospital until North Shore recommended New York Veterinary Specialty. From beginning to end, they made sure my dog was comfortable and not suffering in pain. It was the most exceptional vet care I have seen in awhile. I appreciated the many updates that I was given on Penelope's care. I cant express enough how they took away alot of the fears a big surgery can cause. I would visit my dog every day to make sure she was okay, and each time I felt the staff gave her the love and care any pet owner would want for their beloved pet. Her leg swelled up almost triple the size in a day. Taken her in (never been here before) I was introduced by a lovely and extremely amazing person, Li (sorry don't know how she spells it). She is we very understanding, patient and extremely willing to help. After a couple of surgeries and a few days of stay in the hospital my dog came home with so much energy and looking amazing! During that time Dr. McGwire kept full contact with me. He was extremely patient and very understanding. I felt he did everything he could and more to make sure my dog was healed and taken care of properly. He daily kept in touch with me and providing me his feedback and the status of my dog. The hospital allowed me to go in when I wanted to visit my dog and made me always feel important. They would take care of me as one of their own. I work overnights so my hours of visiting was not really normal but they are available 24 hours and they mean it! All in all my FULL experience with them was amazing and something I am forever grateful for. They understood my circumstance and took care of my dog and myself! Before she was mine, my pup Scarlett was surrendered to the ER.  She had been starved nearly to death, weighing  just 10 pounds at 2 months...which for a Pit/Lab is woefully underweight.  She was the sole survivor of her litter and was only brought in when the bad folks that had her finally found a shred of mercy.  The good people at NYVS&EC nursed her back to life for 2 months, battling malnutrition, dehydration, parasites, infection and fear.  After 2 months she was healthy enough to be fostered with Jacquie, the wonderful lady who did the intake when she was brought in.  They had bonded over those two months.  For the next month she was loved up, trained etc.  while Jacquie took it upon herself to find just the right family for this special baby.My family is so blessed by the efforts of the the loving staff at the ER and Jacquie particularly.  They worked so hard, to save her life pro bono.  They even spayed her pro bono!  The surgery went very well and she healed like a champ.  Her scar is really clean and looks to have been done masterfully. The staff is so dedicated and caring.  This pup literally wouldn't be alive without their efforts.  I bring her in to visit every once in a while and while she is still fearful of strangers, she walks into the office like it's her second home and lavishes Jacquie with kisses and happy wags at Leigh.  I did have to bring her into the office once for severe belly problems.  The doctor  was very clear about what needed to happen and what the costs and options would be.  Sure it was pricy, but they fixed her right up and are there 24/7.  Also happy that they accept the Care Credit Card.  Really helps when you have an unexpected and unbudgeted pet care bill!I was also impressed that they happily suggest a "regular vet" so that you aren't coming to the ER for every day pet health issues.  Miss Scarlett now weighs 60 pounds and is happy and healthy.  The ER will always have a special place in my heart for all their kind help for a baby in need. We came here after an accident that left our dog with a  deep cut on her leg (including a laceration to her ligament) late friday night.  We panicked and went to the first place we knew was open.  Admittedly our dog was never great with Vets and truth be told I thought the vet and tech handled her well for her temperament meaning they never seemed afraid. However due to her temperament the vet and her tech began taking a series of "shortcuts" that we later found out from our vet was very bad practice.  The deep wound was not washed out they used 3 stainless steel staples to close the wound and let us walk out the door with a prescription for a dog half her weight and a mislabeled antibiotic that they did not prescribe and that (as it turns out) does not mix with the antibiotic they prescribed.  Luckily all was caught early and truth be told had we not gone to another doctor after we would be none the wiser but it turns out there are veterinarians that will care for and properly examine a dog despite their temperament.  I am glad to have found it but I will not be returning here voluntarily again. I was basically forced to come here when my pup required emergency surgery and my regular vet could not do much for him. I want to start by saying Dr. Maguire was kind but I do feel that all the doctors here are focused on the $$$. My dog had a surgery and relapsed about 6 months later after we were told that it was very unlikely he'd have the same issue again. After speaking with Dr. Carb (who wasn't too nice) over the phone he offered to take 15 % off to do a different surgery (which other vets strongly disagreed with and said not to do). I also found out that this hospital was charging me double what I ended up paying for another surgeon to do. I only wish I went to my second surgeon first instead of this place, maybe then this could have all been avoided. Anyways Dr. Maguire contacted us and now said that these relapses do happen often (which is false and not what he said originally) and that he could speak to the partners and see if he could give us a discount but that he wanted to see my pup first. I had not time for this and my pup needed to be treated. The surgeon who completed the second surgery was wonderful. Super nice and informative and much more affordable. Stay away from this place! Brought our cat in on a friday night. He wasn't eating and was hiding and we had no idea why. After visiting our local vet and leaving with no answer as to what was wrong, we brought him to NY Veterinary and Specialty Center. We were informed that they would have more equipment and skill to diagnose the problem. We were informed that our cat was anemic and that there was possibly a mass causing the anemia, because all of the other tests came back negative (FIV, thyroid issue, Feline Lukemia, etc). So we left our cat there overnight so they could put him on an IV to rehydrate him and to monitor him. She informed us that an ultrasound was needed but the specialist was not available until Monday. In the meantime, she performed an ultrasound, but informed us that isn't her area of expertise. From her ultrasound she was able to see a mass and guessed it was maybe 4-5 cm and most likely cancerous. But this of course was not definite and we would need the specialist to perform a more detailed ultrasound. It was now Saturday. We had a blizzard friday night, so we were understanding that the specialist wasn't there. Now we received a phone call that he needs a blood transfusion. They perform the blood transfusion and he seems to be a little more lively. We go to visit him Saturday night. Sunday morning we receive a phone call that he vomitted and was having difficulty breathing. The doctor puts him on oxygen. We speak to the doctor and she informs us that he was resting. We questioned as to why the specialist has not arrived as our cat's condition was becoming more and more serious. She was beating around the bush, then admitted that the specialist was away. If we would have known this, we would have went elsewhere. We were devastated. Sunday evening she apologized told us that our cat would be looked at first thing Monday morning (10am). Unfortunately, we received a call 6am Monday morning and were informed that his blood pressure was dropping and he couldn't keep his body temperature. He was pretty much letting go. So we made the grave decision to let him go. If the tumor was benign, we would have went forward with a surgery to remove the mass and give our cat another chance. But because the fact we were not given a chance to have the issues addressed sooner, it ultimately led to our cat's passing. If he was looked at on Saturday, perhaps he would have been properly diagnosed and had a chance. We were very disatisfied with the care our cat received. If they want to be called an emergency hospital, they should be prepared for emergency situations. We are definitely not returning and will not recommend the hospital to anyone else. Read Less

I can't say enough about what a terrific experience we had at this practice.  When my little Corgi became paralyzed in both her back legs, our vet sent us here...  A few hours later, she was having spinal surgery. The specialist, Dr. Carb, was optimistic, and throughout the experience and the months of recovery afterwards, was always happy to take our phone calls, offer reassurance and advice, and see her whenever we needed. The front and back staff is kind, animal friendly, caring, and efficient.  As they take your pet in their arms, you get an immediate feeling that they actually DO care, and love the animals entrusted to them.Financially - this is not a "cheap" place to take your animals, BUT, they did not make any attempt to charge over their initial estimate, and in the end (after a good number of "follow up visits") we never received any unexpected charges, and in total, our costs were below the estimated amount. The results of the surgery were superb... Our  dog walks, runs, plays, and smiles.  I know not all results will be the same - not every dog or cat is as lucky.  But I KNOW that if you take your pet here, you will have the very best chance of a positive outcome.  Day or night (in our case, 3:30am on more than one occasion), the level of care and compassion were unmatched.

Lessor. Read Less

Dr. Carr was very helpful and instrumental in seeing that I would be able to afford the cost of such an expensive operation by reducing the fees. Any other hospital would have possibly put the dog down as bloat is fatal and, the stomach had twisted already. I was very lucky that night. I see a lot of mixed reviews on this place. To basically boil it down: This place does offer true 24 hour emergency care It is expensive.

Read Less

I have taken my dogs here for many years.  One dog had surgery with Dr Lesser.  Excellent surgery. I also see Dr Traffney a cardiologist.  He's excellent. Dr Todd Carter is very good, thorough and answers all your questions.  I have always found this place to be clean very professional and caring.  I lost my dog last year due to heart problems.  She was a patient for a year and when her time came I brought her here.  I have no complaints whatsoever with them.  Compared to LIVS. much better.  However I have had good and bad experiences at LIVS.  NO COMPLAINTS HERE.  Everyone's experiences and circumstances are different.  For me. Should I be in need of an emergency vet for another pet, I will drive twice as far to a different emergency office.Read Less

I brought my 8 yer old Husky there to consult on difficulties he was having with a bad cough, runny nose, wheezing etc. I felt this was probably related to severe allergies. I had seen Dr White-Weithers years ago at a different facility she originally diagnosed his allergies. I initially saw her and then Dr. Carter they are both extremely professional but also caring. Both were very good with handling my dog as well as the tech's. I felt comfortable leaving my dog there for treatment. The staff at the desk are very friendly and helpful, any time that I've called they are extremely helpful. While the cost is higher then our regular vet, who is also fantastic, these are specialist's, so one should anticipate higher costs. They have provided me with cost estimate before giving treatment and have explained options. I have been very happy with the care and treatment and would definitely recommend it.Read Less

Read Less

My American Bulldog had a very serious infection in her right hind leg. She was in so much pain she couldn't even get herself up to eat or go to the bathroom. I recommend this hospital to anyone who really loves and cares for their pet! Be honest with them and they will be with you! Thank you all again! Thank you Li, Dr. McGwire and the rest of the staff! Everyone was amazing and Cheeba and I thank you all so much!!! Read Less

If you are looking to compliment traditional medicine or an alternative to it,   Dr. Nina Malik is the one!!  When is your dog happy to see the Vet?? Mine ALWAYS is!!I bring my chocolate lab Molly here for acupuncture with Dr. Malik .  Molly is recovering from a torn ACL.  We chose not to have the surgery (which they do here too) and to treat her conservatively with water therapy and now acupuncture.  I can not say enough good things about Dr. Malik and her assistant, Jilly I first met Dr. Malik when I brought my Sabrina here for supportive care at the end of her life as she battled cancer.  I can't even describe the wonderful benefits of acupuncture, it was with Sabrina and continues to be wit Molly, Miraculous!   They are so kind and affectionate with both of my dogs and very knowledgeable and patient with my questions.   If your pet is in pain, suffers from allergies, has food issues, separation anxiety or is just a bit "off".  Give Dr. Malik a call. It's not cheap, but so worth it. Read Less
