Dr. Kirk (like his father, who was also my vet for many years, prior to his retirement) is a wonderful vet...highly compassionate,knowledgeable and skilled. I have been taking my cats, Cinnamon and Henry, to Dr. Kirk since they were kittens. Dr. Kevin Kirk is gentle with my babies and works with me to figure out the best and most cost-effective ways to treat them when there is something wrong. I am also very confident when having to board them. I know they are in the best of care. I am very confident when dealing with staff as well. This is my first visit here. Stuff were very friendly and Dr Kirk did a nice check up for my cat and patiently explained things to me and my dad , and how to use medicine. I like this clinic . OMG, I completely forgot how good these guys are.  So I've always had pets and always had them treated @ QMAH.  I grew up, left the neighborhood and of course used other vets.  I am now back in Queens, using another vet and NOT HAPPY.  My mom reminded me of QMAH and sure enough took my Lynxie (on the pic) to get examined. The office has been "redone", but it is still the same location.   Dr. Kirk, spent the time, reviewed the previous vet's med records, gave me a diagnosis and suggested some changes.  It has been 2 weeks since we visited and I am seeing very positive changes.  So happy that these guys are still here.  Give them a try.  Oh and the prices are very reasonable too. I would have given 4 stars but I feel like something was missing. Like the people there seemed lifeless and not animal lovers. I don't remember the vet introducing herself or assistant to me or the dog. I'm used to vets that greet the dog and not just talk to me. I had to switch vets because my previous vet Dr. Volel closed her practice. I loved bringing my pets to her, and her staff was also great.I don't really want to bring my dogs here again but my boy doesn't like traveling so it's my only choice. My little chihuahua brother was getting older and older. Without getting into the details of his health, my family brought him into Queens Midway by way of recommendation from a friend. Dr. Kirk saw him through the last couple of months of his life. The staff and Dr. Kirk showed so much compassion and understanding. He was our first family pet and we really did not know how to deal with his diagnosis. Dr. Kirk reassured us of his health whenever he had an episode and also let us know gently when it was time. He is gentle, honest, and kind, and it is clear to me that he truly cares about the animals that come into his office. He always does what it best for the animal, not for his pocket. I think my first experience with Dr. Kevin Kirk was in 2012 or 2013, when I brought in 2 cats I had adopted from the shelter. In 2014, I needed to bring my other cat,16.5-year-old lilac point Himalayan, AZ, in for a checkup because she didn't seem well, though her spirits, as ever, seemed high.Dr. Kirk determined that AZ needed lab work. After the results came back, Dr. Kirk informed me how very deathly ill my dear sweet AZ was. I already believed him, but he showed me a long lab list of all the things that were wrong with her. She needed to be put to sleep. This still brings tears to my eyes, and it brought big boo-hoos back then, but Dr. Kirk was so understanding, and did not make me feel awkward at all about my crying spells. Because of Dr. Kirk's caring hands, AZ left this world peacefully and quickly.I think Dr. Kevin Kirk is great! Read Less

My dog was already a senior at that point and we needed to switch to someone more affordable. The two positive things I will say is this place is affordable and the vet is very knowledgeable. In August 2015, Dr Kirk diagnosed my dog with bone cancer. He was very clear that it was extremely aggressive and advised us that if he was his dog, he would not move forward with chemo or an amputation. I valued his advice and even months later I still do. The part that leaves a bad taste in my mouth is after Rocky was diagnosed, the vet and I had one phone interaction. This was because I called him. After that, he would not take my calls. All interactions were done through the front desk. I so desperately needed to hear directly from the vet and never did. Was told to just relay my concerns through the front desk. When Rocky passed away mid October 2015, not one phone call came from him or his staff. At a time when I most needed them, they were barely there. They aren't the warmest veterinarian office I've experienced. Keep in mind I work in the field of animal welfare.Read Less

This is one of the Best and I will repeat it THE BEST VETERINARY IN QUEENS. When I said the best I mean it. I have been in like 6 animal clinics in Queens - New York and I changed one to another because the service is awful. This is my first dog and I care for her like my own daughter. Dr Kirk is very friendly he loves to take care of dogs. My dog Chloe she is very calm even when he administrate her shots. I would recommend this Vet to anyone in the whole city. Also PRICES VERY LOW. I took my dog to different places I KNOW THE PRICES. HERE VERY REASONABLE AND GREAT QUALITY AND HUMAN HOSPITALITY. I cannot stress how much I love this Animal Hospital. Dr. Kirk is an amazing Veterinarian! Professional yet, kind, gentle, compassionate, and a wonderful person. He truly does love animals and it clearly shows. He is very knowledgeable and doesn't shove any products and services down your throat either. The staff is both friendly and helpful. He has different hours, so it's great if you cannot get off work etc. Doctor Kirk helped my dog Durante and saved his life from Epilepsy and periodontal disease. Went here when my 8 year old cat began to have potential life-threatening constipation issues. He had been at an emergency care place prior, receiving IV for extreme dehydration. He was not doing well even on the new prescription food they had recommended and was still straining to go. Medication he had been given also made him terribly sick. I was afraid that he would never get better.I came here since it is closest to our home. Dr. K immediately recommended Royal Canine for gastro issues. He said it did wonders for other cats he had prescribed it to. I could not believe in 2 days my kitty was going normally,and in a couple of days was back to himself again. So relieved. The office has been here for awhile, you can tell by all the photos from pet owners. We just moved to the area fairly recently. The staff and Dr. are very helpful and genuinely love animals. They are currently undergoing renovations, in response to the yelper that mentioned that the place is old, but clean and well-kept. So happy to have this place in our neighborhood. Read Less

First of all I can remember coming to Dr. Kirks office since I was a child with our family pets. 39 years later I'm still coming, the only difference is now we have the pleasure of Dr. Kirks son, also Dr. Kirk as our doctor. He is WONDERFUL, KIND, GENTLE AND PATIENT!!!! Dr. Kirk is one of the few vets I've ever come across to own his own pitbull and therefore he treats my 9 year old pitbull Alex without hesitation. He knows the bread, understands it and respects it. As a pitbull mom I can tell you that that's not easy to find. I trust Dr. Kirk 10000% with my baby. I was just there with Alex on Tuesday, November 10th for an emergency visit. They took me the same day I called, wait was minimal under the circumstances of being squeezed in and as always I left feeling much better after seeing Dr. Kirk. Not only did he treat Alex with gentle loving hands, but because of him and his quick amazing skills we were able to avoid partial tail amputation. Needless to say my husband, myself and most importantly Alex left very happy people tonight....as I watch Alex sleep next to me in our bed, I know he's here and not in a cold dark kennel awaiting surgery ONLY because of Dr. Kirk. Thank you thank you thank you. There is no other vet for me. Whether a rabies shot, or a serious condition, I'd never let anyone else treat my boy!! And you shouldn't either!!!! Read Less

Truth told, this is probably technically a 4 star spot, but I give it the fifth star for the extreme humanity (animality?) of Dr. Kirk.  He is such a caring and empathetic vet.  He knows how much we love our pets, and he does everything he can to give our pets the best care he can. It's also immediately evident how much he himself loves animals and his job.We've been going to this neighborhood, family-owned veterinary clinic for easily more than two decades for all our dogs. The physical state of the place is old, and not shiny and bright - but clean and well-kept.  The prices are extremely reasonable.  And as I said, Dr Kirk is just so caring and kind. Like anyone who has to make medical diagnoses, particularly those who cannot talk to their patients, Dr Kirk does his best.  He may make mistakes, but never anything unreasonable (e.g., we initially thought our dog had SARD - sudden acquired retinal detachment, but in fact, he had a brain tumor; this was also undetected by the ophthalmologist we saw, who explained there was no way to be positive without a further test requiring anesthetizing our dog completely). The animal handlers that help Dr K are also great, and the receptionists range from fair to great. Overall, I am so happy that we have Dr K in our neighborhood and our lives. Read Less

I was there 20 mins before my appointment time but the front staff still let the person who has later appointment went ahead of us because they were there a minute earlier. Hence that my appointment is 45 mins before them... just because i have 3 dogs doesn't mean that I have to be the last one. I made appointment for 3 dogs. I like the vet here, staffs are nice. Price very reasonable. I have been to a few vets around the neighborhood and this is one of those vet I feel they treat my dogs like my kids and not just something to make money with. Read Less

Don't judge this place too harshly when you walk in. The outside looks rough but the inside is quite nice. The ladies behind the desk are very polite and informative. We got there a little late for my cats appointment, but it was not a problem. The wait time was very short and they get straight to assessing your pet with patience.           They were so gentle and my cat did not act out at all. Ladies this is for you...the doc is hot. I mean I have to throw it in there cause everyone can appreciate good looks. He was very thorough and walks you through what you can do to keep up your animals treatment. We are new to the area and were nervous about finding a new vet after years with a wonderful vet in Chicago. The place is not much to look at, which did not make us feel much better. Once inside though, we were put at ease. In the 3 times we've been there, there have never been more than 1-2 other animals in the waiting room and we haven't waited more then 5 minutes to be seen. The vet techs are very friendly. One in particular treated our dog like he was hers, talking, cooing, playing and just loving him up. He was in heaven. Dr. Kirk has been extremely thorough and goes out of his way to explain everything in detail. I feel like our animals get the best of care here. Relieved and happy! Read Less

I probably started taking my cat to Dr. Kirk 3 years ago or so. Although I found his office to be very cold and a bit of a dump, I felt that Dr. Kirk was a competent vet, and I still do. The reason for the bad review is the awful experience that I had there when  my cat needed to be put to sleep.Poor Cleo had some horrible virus that was shutting down her organs one by one. The only humane option was euthanasia. So when the diagnosis was confirmed my husband and I both left work early to make the appointment given to us by Dr. Kirk and so that Cleo could end her suffering. So we get to the office and end up waiting there at least an hour with our suffering cat while Dr. Kirk treats other animals. At first I had it together but after 50 minutes or so I start crying in the waiting room, over my cat and over frustration with the situation.  I go up to the useless teenager that he has working the front desk, express that I not happy with the situation and she tells me 10 minutes ( it was more). Finally we take Cleo in there, I'm a mess at this point and I had to actually ask for a sedative to be used bf she was put to sleep (this isn't standard?? I'm glad I asked and I hope he actually used one and didn't just charge us for one).  Oh, and to add insult to injury the useless girl at the front desk had this stupid smile on her face when she was holding Cleo down which she got rid of once she saw me giving her the death stare.  So I was pretty upset after this incident and wrote Dr. Kirk a letter, sticking to the facts and discussing my disappointment with the way the situation was handled. That was over a year ago, I never received a response.Also, as a side note, if you do use Dr. Kirk I would avoid having my animal stay there over night. We left Cleo there to get fixed and got her back really skinny, sneezing and with diarrhea. I've had other female cats fixed and they never come back like that. I've read similar remarks on other websites from people that had their animals board there. Read Less

This is my first time ever in an animal hospital and my first vet experience, so I really didn't know what to expect.  I was just going along for the ride.  We had three shelties that needed their annual shots and physical check-up.  From my limited experience, the doctor seems fairly knowledgeable.  He could tell the different behaviors of our canine friends by just looking at their teeth.  His comments for Potato (the boy):  "He bites and chews a lot of things at home huh?  His teeth are very clean."  Bingo!  The nurses are also very helpful and very nice.  From our limited time with them, they all seem to enjoy their jobs and are true animal lovers.  I'm hoping more Yelpers would visit this hospital (only when needed of course) and share their reviews to provide a better benchmark.
