I am leaving a 3. To be a neutral review. I had great experiences while taking my animals here. She is a good vet and the staff is nice. They were accommodating to try to get my animals in when needed. Unfortunately my last experience is what is causing me to give a lower review. I was told they could no longer see my dogs due to a bad review my husband left. Where I can understand this. I am extremely upset that they did this to my dog while I was waiting to have her follow up appointment for her eyes and seizures. My husband left a review that blamed the vet for something he shouldn’t have but has since taken down. I was called after it was taken down. He has huge anxiety about taking her out of the house because of the seizures and I was at work. Unfortunately he took it out on the review. I wish it was something that could have been discussed before we were cut as patients. Or even ask that he not return, as I have not been rude in any aspect. I was left scrabbling for another vet for a follow up to make sure everything is still going well and not getting worse. One eye was getting better one wasn’t changing. So please do your pets the favor and do not leave an unpleasant review, even for a short time if you want to retain this vet. She is a good vet but the practice does not seem to have any wiggle room when it comes to reviews. Not even in the heat of the moment. I understand a small city vet wanting to keep their reviews pleasing. I can now no longer in good conscience recommend to my friends to go there if while sick they cut a dog as a patient. It is important to know while reading these reviews, that some of the older posts were in regards to the previous vet who no longer works/owns the business, Dr. Spier. Since the new ownership, we have only had positive experiences. It is so easy to get an appointment here, where as others in the area it was over a month to be seen. The place is very clean, professional, and a reasonable price as far as vet care goes. I recommend to anyone in the area. Read Less

Have been using Dr. Dattellas since she took over and was pleased until I tried to get a prescription for heart guard. Staff is incredibly rude and spiteful. I rescue dogs that typically have many health problems and have spent 10s of thousands of dollars on them over the last few years, and this place will never get my business again. Once you irritate the staff by complaining, they spite you and don't give you all the records to go somewhere else. Find any other place besides here. Dr. Spier, Fulton Animal Hospital - do not recommend.  Dr. Spier had two of my dogs under his care.  Both large mixed breeds.  Both were under his care since they were puppies.  My senior dog last saw him at 10 years old.  Not once did Dr. Spier ever recommend any diagnostics for him.  A visit consisted of vaccination, weight check and heart worm check.  We were handed a bill that didn't explain the break down of costs, only the total.  Not one CBC/urinalysis was every recommended or run.  My younger dog was medicated at three years old for aggression towards a child.  He had 36 pounds of weight gain over a four year span that went unaddressed/undiscussed (scale is in the back at Fulton Animal Hospital so as a consumer we did not know at the time the extent of the weight gain).  He diagnosed him with diabetes, failed to recommend/run any diagnostics (including urinalysis) and then vaccinated him with a series of seven vaccinations without ever discussing with us the risks of vaccinating a sick dog.  Because he failed to properly disclose the risks, we didn't have the opportunity to make an informed decision as to what was in the best interest of our dog.  Two days later he kept him over night, started him (at 97 pounds) on 35u of humulin N insulin (when his bg was 263 after eating), increased it to 40u the next day, dropped his blood glucose to LO (under 20) with one shot of 40u of insulin and told us to give him 40u BID (twice daily).  He sent him home one hour after the LO reading, didn't disclose the hypoglycemia, and failed to note on his records that the LO reading was ever treated to make sure his blood glucose was in a safe range before he was sent home.   A week later we called in his blood glucose readings, in which we skipped around seven shots due low readings we were seeing. We have those numbers but there is nothing in his records that show what they are.  We were told to take him off insulin, that he may be in honeymoon.  We went from 80u of insulin daily to zero.  With NO follow up information.  Four weeks went by before we found a new vet.  Not once did he call to see how a dog who went from 80u insulin to zero was doing.  Not once did he seem to recognize that his prescribed dosing recommendation contributed to the overdosing we were seeing.  No once did he recommend we bring the dog back for further evaluation.  He simply said to go from 80u to zero.   Long story short...this same dog ended up having extremely high fasting cholesterol and triglyceride values.  He ended up having pancreatitis.  He ended up being hypothyroid.  He ended up losing his vision to cataracts and was so weak and lethargic that he would fall forward many times a day.   He ended up with a cervical spinal lesion which slowly robbed his mobility in all four legs.  A lesion which required high doses of twice daily pred to help him walk.  At nine years young our boy collapsed at home and was gone before we could get him to our vehicle for help.  And why?  His records show 36 pounds of weight gain.  They show him being medicated for aggressive behavior.  Right there, at three years old, he should have had blood work and a thyroid panel run.  But Dr. Spier chose to put him on a hormonal drug and never offered a medical cause as an explanation for the aggressive behavior.  At eight years old he diagnosed him diabetic and still failed to run any blood work/urinalysis.  He never mentioned them as options, as had we understood what they were and why they would have been necessary, we would have approved them.  What we learned:  A little bit about hypothyroidism...it doesn't just happen. It's a progressive disease.  Two of the earliest signs are unexplained weight gain and sudden aggression towards a child.  Most hypothyroid dogs have repeat infections and/or loss of fur, but not all do.  Our boy have a full thick coat.  Many hypothyroid dogs are extremely lethargic. Our boy was nervous and reactive.  Despite his weight he was fast and quite agile.  But his behavior worsened over the years.  Hypothyroid dogs can't clear lipids such as cholesterol and triglycerides from their systems.  Dogs with high lipids are prone to pancreatitis, and for some dogs that pancreatitis can be subclinical.  It was for our boy.  Dogs who suffer repeated bouts of pancreatitis can have their pancreas scared to the point it no longer produces insulin.  A dog who doesn't have insulin production on it's own is diagnosed as diabetic.   Once he was transferred to the new vet, and someone took the time to educate us, he had five blood panels run in a 12 month window.  Had Dr. Spier looked at his health history as a whole, had he taken the time to provide the care and guidance we'd expected, had he not been negligent in the treatment of the diabetes, our boy likely would still be here today. I have had nothing but good experiences with Dr. Spier and I, too, have a diabetic dog who was diagnosed in spring of 2011. Dr. Spier answers all of my questions, even offered to see my dog after hours on a weekend when I was concerned about his blood sugar level. Asking questions is key when visiting a veterinarian because you can't talk to your dog once you get home, unlike with a child. Highly recommend this animal hospital and Dr. Spier's work!! Read Less

Do NOT recommend!!! Unless Dr. Spier has changed his approach to managing diabetic dogs, in my opinion his treatment was nothing short of negligent and he has no business treating pets at all given the lack of care our diabetic boy received. For ten years we took our two large mixed breed dogs and two domestic cats to Dr. Spier without incident. One of my mixed breed dogs was dx. with diabetes in Nov. 2011. Was left in the care of Dr. Spier overnight to be regulated. He was picked up at 4:30p the next day. We were given instructions to give him 40u of NPH insulin twice a day. He came home shaking, unable to walk, unable to put one foot down at all, saturated in urine, blood shot eyes, hoarse bark and slept for two days straight. Had we not been home testing we would have killed him the first week he was home. After three days we contacted Dr. Spier because his blood glucose readings were hypoglycemic low. Dr. Spier said he may be honeymooning and to stop giving insulin. He never once mentioned that the amount of insulin should be reduced. It was 40u or nothing. He was, in fact, not honeymooning. He was being overdosed. In December we switched vets and in March got a copy of his records while there. Prior to that point, we had considered leaving our two cats and other mixed breed dog in the care of Dr. Spier. His records showed that one hour prior to being picked up to come home his blood glucose read 'lo' on the vet's machine. Meaning his blood glucose was under 20. He was hypoglycemic, near coma and death range. His records show that he was only given one shot of 40u of insulin that day - one shot put him in that state. Yet Dr. Spier felt confident telling us to give 40u twice a day. No notes on his record of his hypoglycemia being treated. The hypoglycemia was not mentioned to us at pick up. It does, however, explain why he was shaking and unable to walk when he was brought home. His records don't show him being tested after 4p his first day there - leading us to believe he may not have been monitored at all during the evening hours. We will never know if he went hypoglycemic at night or if he experienced seizures as a result of low blood sugar. His records don't show when he was fed, how much he was fed and what type of food he was fed. His records don't show if water was provided or if he was allowed potty breaks. All important details for a diabetic dog. A full diagnostic workup was never run on him at time of diagnosis. Turns out he is also hypothyroid - which would have come up had a CBC been run on him. His fasting triglycerides were 383, fasting cholesterol 1055 and he was suffering from chronic pancreatitis. Those factors likely led to his diabetes diagnosis. Because of the overdosing he was not able to be regulated on the NPH insulin and had to be switched to levemir. His maintenace dose is 4.5u - equivalent to 18u of NPH. More than 50% less than what Dr. Spier prescribed for him. Dr. Spier also never explained that exercise can lower a diabetic dog's blood glucose. Our dog will drop 120 points on a 20 minute walk. Given his overdosing, had we taken him for a walk we likely would have killed him as his blood glucose didn't have room to drop. Thankfully it was November and the weather wasn't decent enough to walk. He never explained that elevated blood glucose can cause diabetic dogs to develop ketones and that you can buy strips at a local pharmacy to test for them, as anything more than a trace can be deadly. After reviewing his records in March we decided that none of our animals would return to Dr. Spier's care. They have all since been switched to a new vet. Read Less

HE TENDS TO BE CONSERVATIVE IN TX AND I FIND THAT WORKS VERY WELL. HE SEEMS TO KNOW WHEN SHE IS SICK AND HOW MUCH TO TREAT HER. WHEN SHE NEEDS MORE AGGRESSIVE TREATMENT HE IS RIGHT THERE TO DO IT. WE HAVE FOUND HIM TO BE VERY COMPASSIONATE AND GENTLE WITH ALL OF OUR ANIMALS OVER THE YEARS. THE NEW VET WORKING WITH HIM SEEMS VERY NICE AND KNOWLEGEABLE AS WELL. DR SPIER ALWAYS SEES OUR CAT EVEN IF WE HAVE A WEEKEND EMERGENCY. HE IS VERY LOYAL TO HIS PATIENTS AND THEIR ANIMALS. ALSO WHEN HE TREATS OUR CAT FOR AN ILLNESS HE WILL SEE HER BACK TWICE FOR THE SAME PROBLEM WITHOUT AN ADDITIONAL CHARGE. DONT KNOW MANY VETS OR DOCTORS FOR THAT MATTER THAT DO THAT.ALL IN ALL GOING TO THE FULTON ANIMAL HOSPITAL HAS ALWAYS BEEN A GOOD THING FOR US. Read Less

After 10 years, you might wonder why the negative review. Yes, Dr. Spier is technically a good vet, that's why I went to him for 10 plus years. But, he is also extremely mercenary, the most money grubbing vet I think I have ever visited. The straw that broke the camel's back was today. We went to Dr. Spier's to pick up $161 worth of medicine. While there, I saw Dr. Spier sitting in the back (it was a quiet day with no clients, probably due to the previous night's snow storm). I made an offhand comment about my little baby Leonard and asked him if he thought a crouching problem (a problem which I paid him to look at before Christmas, but hadn't determined a cause at that time) might be due to a luxating patella. He said, well we can check it real quick if you'd like. I hesitated and said, well, will it hurt Leonard? The vet said, no not at all, would you like to have it checked, Dr. In Training (sorry don't know her name) can do it. I said, well ok I guess. Dr. Spier said well go in the exam room. The Dr. In Training spent all of 2 minutes (if that) and said there were no problems with Leonard's patella. So, then we went to pay the bill (for the worm check for Leonard we thought - we had already paid $161 in medicine) and found out he was charging us for a full exam too! I was shocked, after 10 years, I sincerely thought this was merely a courtesy check, especially since Dr. Spier never even looked at Leonard! How could he charge me a full exam rate when he did not perform a full exam? My husband went ballistic in the office, but we paid the bill and left. Several months earlier, we had brought in our cat Leonardo for vaccinations and teeth cleaning and Leonard in for an exam regarding a scratch he had on his hind quarters (Leonard was not treated for the scratch). This cost us $500!! And, no teeth were extracted!! What was the $500 for? You'll never know with Dr. Spier because HE NEVER GIVES A RECEIPT!! Can you believe a vet that doesn't provide receipts? Well, just go to Dr. Spier and you will see for yourself. There was also a very painful incident with Dr. Spier several years ago with my son Neelix. Neelix was very ill, and the Dr. knew this. Neelix was my son and the Dr. knew this too. When it was time to make that final awful decision, I was holding Neelix in my arms in the vehicle and I just wanted the Dr. to come out to the car so that I wouldn't have to move poor Neelix. The doctor refused. That really should have been it for me, but like I said, I have found Dr. Spier to be extremely capable and knowledgeable and so I returned. There must be other capable and knowledgeable vets in our area and now my quest is to find them. Because, at least for me, I am finished being screwed by Dr. Spier.

I have told all my pet owner friends to switch vets. Read Less

Read Less

I HAVE BEEN GOING TO DR. SPIER FOR MANY MANY YEARS WITH A VARIETY IF PETS. CURRENTLY HAVE A CAT. HE HAS BEEN EXCELLENT TO BOTH OUR CAT AND OURSELVES.

Spier. Read Less

My experience at the Fulton Animal Hospital was nothing like the other reviewer describes. The doctor took plenty of time answering all the questions I had about my animal, and when I asked, they had already weighed my cat and readily told me. I found the help courteous and helpful as well. My animal is overweight as well, but I asked the doctor about it, and he happily discussed things I could do to help get my pet back on track. All in all a very good experience, I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Spier and the Fulton Animal Hospital. Read Less
