As my usual vet is without power, I had to bring my ill cat, Tiger, to Brookville Animal Hospital yesterday. As far as the facility goes, it's bright, cheerful, and you can tell that the staff loves animals and knows what they're doing. Tiger had trouble breathing, and they took me in within an hour of my calling. No wait, I went right in to an exam room. Unfortunately, I had to put Tiger to sleep, his illness was such that putting him through a series of painful, expensive tests would only have prolonged his suffering. I did not want that for him. He was brave right up until the end, and the staff was very compassionate during what was an excruciating time for me. That being said, prepare for an extremely high vet bill. I know these things cost money, and what was most important was that Tiger no longer suffer, but having to spend $330 to end his suffering is, in my opinion, exorbitant. Saying goodbye to a pet that you love is never easy, and I would have thought that perhaps they would have cut me a break on the cost of saying goodbye. Then again, I've never had to go through that before, so I don't really know the costs of these things. I just think it was far too expensive and they should have taken the heart break of the situation into account. Not to mention, right before they came in to the exam room, I hear the vet, a Dr. Cohen, say out in the hall to his assistant "we have to do this cat now." That was not very compassionate. To you, this might be another cat. To me, he was the kindest, sweetest, most selfless animal I've ever known, more concerned for my well being than his own failing health.
