10/10 would recommend seeing Dr. Furst!!! Request to see him. He is absolutely fantastic, extremely informative and genuinely nice and caring. I am a picky person and do not trust easily, but after just my first visit with him I knew I wanted him to be my cats' only doctor. I absolutely love this vet. I'm a first time pet owner and my first time going in was during off hours and I was freaking out because my kittens had fleas-- I didn't know any better lol. They were so extremely patient with me and extremely nice. Whenever I call with big or minor concerns, I'm never made out to feel stupid or like my concerns are invalid. They answer all questions with detail and have a Dr call back for further discussion if necessary. Another huge plus for me is that I never feel like I am being scammed or taken advantage of money-wise. I am a young woman so that's a huge deal for me, because it's definitely easier for places to try to get you for every penny and this place just doesn't do that. - I will say, my one and only qualm I've ever had there was when I received a few emails that it was time for my cats annual check up. So I called to make those appointments. The woman whom I don't know the name of that answered, talked me out of making the appointment telling me it wasn't necessary and that I don't need to bring them in. I'm not an arguer so I just said okay and hung up and figured I'd call back later and hope someone else answered the phone. Wasn't going to make a mountain out of a mole hill. I then later expressed my concern to someone else just to make them aware. Sometimes people just have off days, that's definitely not the worst thing that could've happened. I am absolutely shocked by how many poor reviews there are for this place so let this be one that gives you hope. This place has definitely improved since those poor reviews. I can tell you that. Everyone at Hudson Highlands is so caring for your pets and for the owners.  I have been going to them at their new office in Fishkill for a long time since 2003 with my first Bullmastiff puppy Diesel and before that when Dr Whitfield was in Beacon since 1969 and every time one of my dogs or cats had an emergency they went above and beyond to help  and comfort. We rushed our Bullmastiff Diesel in with Bloat and Dr Twila Whitefield did everything she could and saved his life. Dr McNamara is an excellent surgeon and loves all his patients My Dogs are well known there and love the ladies behind the desk because they have cookies, they treated our Cat  for 18 years and now our new Kitten Wrangler that we got from Ally's cats, at Hudson Highlands He has become a major part of the family and I love what Alison does to save Cats and Kittens and give them homesDr Furst had just started there when I brought in my Pickles (Bullmastiff), she had a slight limp, he diagnosed her with osteosarcoma. They helped me do everything to make her last days comfortable and to comfort me and my family to the day we had to let her go. They have specialist there to see if you need them too. Which makes it so nice they see all the records and discuss your pet with your Dr I can't say enough good things about them. I love them all They are always in my Prayers Read Less

I wish I read the reviews for Dr. Paul McNamara before I visit that office and was verbally abused by the Dr. My German Shepherd had a Cruciate Ligament surgery (TTA) at my local vet in Rockland County and although that surgery went well, My Nyla now needed to get the Left leg repaired as well. Dr. McNamara came recommended to me since he gave a police discount and anyone who needed to get this surgery done for their pet knows that it is very expensive to pay especially when you do not have insurance. I paid the $165 consultation fee and noticed during that time that my dog developed a sore around her vulva area. I initially thought that is was a callous because she didn't sit right. I brought her back to my hometown Dr. in Rockland and my dog ended up getting surgery on that area to correct a skin issue. After the antibiotics and the stitches were taken out my home Dr. cleared her for surgery. I then scheduled the TPLO surgery for a week later with McNamara. When I showed up at the vet office at 8 am to drop Nyla off I was greeted by their rude receptionist that rushed me along to sign the $4,438.09 estimated bill and get Nyla in the back. (Nyla was scheduled to be operated on first) The Dr's assistant asked me if Nyla was on any medications, I told her she completed all of her antibiotics a week ago. She then told that the Dr may not want to operate that day and to wait in an examining room for Dr McNamara to speak with me.  When Dr McNamara came into the room he said that he was going to move forward with the operation but my dog may develop a deep bone infection because a sore was still visible on her vulva. I told him at that point that I didn't know what to do because I was relying on his professional opinion. He said that He can do the surgery but if the dog got an infection it was my fault. I tried to call my own vet for a second opinion but it was then that Dr. Mcnamara started to raise his voice and start to yell at me that my dog was his first operation for the day and that I am now ruining his days' schedule. I became very upset at this situation. I felt vulnerable and uncomfortable and I got up to leave the examination room and went to the waiting room, but he followed me, still yelling at me that I shouldn't have come because my dog still had a sore. (even though he just said that he would still operate and my dog was cleared for surgery) Dr. McNamara continued to yell at me that he was a Board-certified surgeon and that he was on a much higher level than my home vets. I was scared of him at this point and being that he is a very tall person he raised his arms up to motion that I was the one raising my voice and it was me that was wrong.Paul McNamara is arrogant and rude. I asked for my dog and left crying. I will never let people like that touch my pet family member!!To make matters worse. My husband called McNamara and asked why he spoke to me like that. McNamara said that it was me raising my voice at him and causing a scene in the office. He also said that I was making a stink about not getting a bigger police discount!! I couldn't believe what my husband told me he said!!!! What a lier!! I hope more people read these reviews! It was a huge mistake of mine not to read other people's reviews before I drove an hour up there. I will also spread the word to our local K9 officers not to use him in the future! So beware of Dr. Paul McNamara and his assistants!! Read Less

If you have a pet, Hudson Highlands Veterinary is your best choice for professional and quality care. Don't fall for a pet "Companion" where fees and appearances take precedence over medical care. While we unfortunately only learned of this Veterinary hospital after our dog was old and very sick, they counseled us honestly and compassionately regarding our dog's condition, and clearly laid out our options. While we made the difficult decision to put our beloved pet to sleep, we were very impressed with how compassionately and professionally the doctors and technicians treated our dog - and our family. It is our opinion that there isn't a better Veterinary group in the Putnam-Dutchess, NY area than Hudson Highlands Veterinary Medical Group and they get our unconditional recommendation. Read Less

Rude and unhelpful. I was visiting family in the area for Thanksgiving when my 2 year old Chihuahua became ill. After two days of use trying to use pumpkin and a bland diet to curb her diarrhea, she was no longer eating or getting out of her crate. I called this vet as I worked there many years ago when I was in high school and Dr. Whitefield owned the practice. The receptionist was very unsympathetic, and they wouldn't see us because they were 'booked'. She also wasn't able to recommend another vet in the area. For an animal practice that claims that they have emergency services to turn away a sick dog was very shocking to me. Additionally, the receptionist was completely uncaring. I was so disappointed that this place that I held in such high regard was so completely rude and unhelpful. Read Less

Dr Paul McNamara did surgery on my puppy. Although the surgery itself went fine, everything else was highly upsetting. He (and his staff who take direction from him) were irritated and impatient with my questions. They kept saying "these questions were already covered in the consult". I don't think it's unreasonable for an owner to ask the same question a few times. I am not a vet and the information was new to me and fairly upsetting. I expect to be treated respectfully and patiently even if it takes a few times for me to fully understand the facts. Further, I got no guidance about post operative rehabilitation or long term care. I was told what to do for the following 4 weeks and that was it. I was not educated so I could make good decisions - I was ordered to follow instructions without any understanding. I found that difficult. I found this doctor to be nasty and even threatening. And even though I had to spend more money to do it, I finally I decided to take my puppy to a different vet who could help me better understand what lay ahead for us. I went to Hurley Animal Hospital and saw Dr. Gunzberg who is also an orthopedic surgeon. I was handled kindly, patiently, and with as much or more expertise. I felt like he cared about my dog and also about me. And I got lots of guidance about long term prospects and care. He and his staff were cheerful and helpful. I write this review to help others avoid what happened to me. When your dog needs/has surgery you are in a highly vulnerable and confused state. You need professionals who are happy to answer your questions no matter how many times they are asked. Go to a doctor who will patiently guide you through the process and educate you so you can make the best decisions for your animal. I can tell you for certain that Dr. Paul McNamara is not that doctor. He is a bully - not a caregiver. Read Less

Cooper, my mostly Saint Bernard Rescue dog and I went to Hudson Highlands for surgery on his torn ACL, broken knee. When I called to make the appointment, I expressed my wish to be with him until he fell asleep for the operation. this was not the norm but they understood and allowed this small concession to dog motherhood. I love that the staff greets you as though you were part of their own lives and that the appointments were ON TIME! Everyone cared about my dog and within seconds the Vet Tech had passed the "I Love You " test with Cooper. If I had been impressed with the fabulous staff, I was about to be blown away by Dr. Paul McNamara who walked in to greet us. Here, too, the first one to be greeted and and adored was Cooper. I patiently waited my turn as I was already half in love with him just because of his attitude towards Cooper. Dr. Paul is impressive to say the least. It doesn't hurt that he is handsome, but he took time to explain everything to me without treating me like an idiot because I was not familiar with vet terminology. I was shown the entire facility that ranks right up there with the best people hospitals! The entire experience was so positive, from the wonderful sisterhood at the front desk to the after care of Cooper, that it resonated with my own conviction of what health care should be. It would be a perfect template for every health provider. For Cooper and I, and for many other pet owners, we are given the gift of profound kindness and respect. It doesn't get better than that. I traveled over an hour and a half to have an appointment with Dr. McNamara at Hudson Highlands. It was the best experience I have ever had at a veterinary clinic and I have had dogs and cats for years. The staff could not have been nicer and more accommodating. The clinic is beautiful and presents a very calming environment for the pets. Dr. McNamara was great with my dog, who is very fearful of men. He was very kind. During the consultation and examination, he explained the options I could take in making the dog more comfortable, At no time did I feel he was ever encouraging me into treatments that would be more beneficial for the clinics bottom line than my dogs health. I have been going to Hudson Highlands Vet for around 2 years now as I've had my adopted cats for about 8 years. They have been the best vet practice I have ever gone to, hands down. My cat, Smee is a Persion that had a mast cell tumor and Dr. McNamara did a spectacular job removing the inch-diameter tumor as well as taking care of Smee until he was recovered enough to come home to me. The staff is kind, compassionate, caring, and thoughtful. Smee has been on chemo over the last year and has had several bouts of sickness from a weakened immune system and they could not be more kind to him or me. We have been with Dr. Christiansen from day one and we cannot rave enough about him enough. He is a truly caring doctor that has a great manner around my cats. I love the staff too. They are all real animal lovers there. We also recently saw Dr. Furst in our regular vets absence and he was fantasic as well. Thourough, polite and caring. You cannot ask for more than that. As far as the prices go, I have seen much higher prices at other vets in the past. I feel their prices are very fair and reasonable. I wouldnt want to pay less for second rate care anyway so the prices are fine with me. I know that when I bring my cats in, they are being cared for. I also want to say that there is a vet tech there and I keep forgetting to ask her name but shes truly AWESOME. Super long blonde hair and a great sense of humor. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Dr's and Staff at Hudson Highland.  I have never seen a more dedicated group of individuals in my life not only to our beloved animals but to the family.   Unfortunately, my Min Pin, Rocky, was diagnosed with kidney disease.  It is a testament to this Group's dedication, knowledge, and caring that Rock lived as long as he did.  As the disease progressed, I would take him to the office almost daily for IV treatment (a sort of dialysis).   This frequency provided me a close look at the Group and the individuals.  First of all, I have to tell you there are NO better Technicians out there then those you will experience at HH!  The compassion, warmth, and intelligence they offer is like no other.  Rocky became their Rocky!  You can tell each one takes their profession to heart and provides superlative care.  Then there are the ladies who make up the office staff! WOW, what a dynamic group of caring, effective individuals who demonstrate a unsurpassed rapport with each client.  And last but certainly not least, the Doctors.  Only can be described as a perceptive, brilliant, empathic group of individuals who you know truly care for each any every one of their patients (both 2 and 4 legged).   Thank you again and again for the care you provided my boy and the continued care you give to my 2 "girls".  Amazing. Do not allow our cherished beloved family member's unnecessary death to be in vein. Beware of Hudson Highlands Vet. Med. Group, PC. Unfortunately I did the research after the errors that led to the death of our family dog at the hands of HHVMG. I along with many other patrons of this vet was left bewildered to say the very least. HHVMG is extremely over priced and uncaring! Their propaganda will try to convince all otherwise, as they try to lure you into their economic trap. Once you and your pet are in their care that is when they stop caring. We brought Jasper (7 year old healthy Jack Russell Terrier) early in the day (3/19/10) to the facility in Hopewell Jct. knowing he was ill. After a short examination and $375 later "the award winning vet" deemed him to be fine and sent him home. My wife called throughout the day to notify the staff the dog was getting sicker. The staff assured my wife the dog was fine and that the examinating Dr. would call us back. The call we were desperately waiting for never came. As the evening progressed so did Jasper's illness. Multiple calls were made to HHVMG, pleading to allow us to bring Jasper back to the facility. Finally 12 hours later the annoyed phone receptionist agreed to call in a doctor. We rushed our boy back to the facility. Before they would agree to look at our dog we were forced to sign two waivers indemnifying the hospital and their staff of any and all responsibility. Not to mention they would need a down payment of $1600 before proceeding with any treatment. Jasper died that evening. The next day my young son and I went to the HHVMG to pick up our pet's remains so that we could bury him next to our other dog that died at the same facility. We were first ignored than rudely treated. Finally they dumped a cardboard toilet tissue box on my son with our beloved boy stuffed inside. As we turned to leave we were mandated to pay another $366. After reviewing the receipt the bottom stated the vet's orders; "buy a flee & tick collar, keep the incision clean and dry, check your dog's stitches daily, keep the doctor's notified of any swelling or redness, Your dog may need an Elizabethan collar, no food or water for two hours, no running jumping, no ball playing for a few days" There are many great vets that will give our pets honest and reliable care. Facilities that truly put the animals' health & well being before the almighty dollar, HHVMG is NOT one of them! Read Less

I have been frequenting the vet office (and Beacons office) for years now. My cat Clarisse has not know any other vet in her 8 years. She always makes Clarisse feel comfy. Thank you guys for the  great care that you give to my animals/kids :) Read Less

My five month old French Bulldog was diagnosed by my regular vet with a heart murmur and it was recommended that a board certified cardiologist perform an echocardiogram. Dr. Petrie examined the puppy and explained that the heart murmur is not serious and that we should have our dog for many years and we should "just enjoy him and not worry about his condition". Dr. Petrie is an incredibly skilled vet with having worked for AMC in New York City. He is also extremely personable and you can't help but feel very confident after talking with him. I highly recommend this fantastic hospital. The staff are also very friendly.Read Less

I can't say enough good things about Husdon Highlands. They have taken such good care of my two dogs and my cat! I've been there with two emergencies also. The staff is extreamley nice and the doctors I've dealt with, Kalba, Christensen, Whitefield and Monte have alwayes helped me make the most practical choices for me and my pets, not the most expensive! I highly recommend them, both offices, Beacon and Lime Kiln. Read Less

Dr Springer is great with our two rescues. They were seeing her before we adopted them so it was nice to keep the same vet. The office is very nice, staff is very friendly and they sell a lot of pet products in the lobby which is very convenient. I was impressed at how helpful the staff was on the phone even before we came in for our first visit! Read Less

I have been going to this vet for many years, more because of convenience than anything else.  Today I called to try to make an appointment because my pomeranian is sick and 'Sue' told me they won't see me because they haven't seen my dog in a few years.  She told me I should go to the emergency clinic.  Seriously? You won't see my dog because you haven't been squeezing every penny out of me for every nonsense thing you people say dogs need?  Well good riddance, I'll easily find another vet and I don't think I could do much worse in terms of finding better prices.  It's a shame that low level people who are dealing with clients can give an entire business a bad name and make them lose valuable clientele. Read Less
