Let me first say we are new patients at Island Park Animal Hospital. For the past 4 months, Dr. Ratner has been my lifeline to sanity. I have 2 senior dogs, 1 senior cat and a 6 year old cat. In the past 4 months, our Bichon Frise Charlie (11) has been diagnosed with diabetes and most recently, our Havanese Joey (10) has been diagnosed with cancer. Not to mention that our felines cannot be left out. Louie (14) and his nephew Sylvester (6) like trouble as well. They don't always see eye to eye and had an altercation that caused a nasty abscess on the side of Louie's face. I've been at the vet more in these past 4 months than I have in the entire lives of these boys. With that said, I should be counting my blessings and believe me, I am. Our biggest blessing has been Dr. Ratner and her wonderful staff. Dr. Ratner has surpassed any expectations I've ever had or have experienced with any other vet. I am able to be in contact her 24 hours if I had any concerns. After tests, diagnosis was determined within 24 hours. They got me in with each of my dogs right away to start treatment. Taught me how to administer Charlie's insulin as well and monitor him at home. When Joey's cancer was recently discovered she had him in surgery that same day. As I type, 10 days later after surgery, we have our happy go lucky Joey back. We are still waiting on pathology results so we don't know what tomorrow will bring. Joey is happy and that's most important. Our boys are seniors so we cherish each day with them. We all wish they'd live out their lives with us till it was our time but sadly, only the good die young. I cannot thank Dr. Ratner enough for giving us extra time, even if it's one extra day with all of our boys. She's very realistic, no unnecessary care or treatments. She's not out to make money off your emotions. Quite honestly, with all she has done for my family and what we've spent on vet bills, I don't know how she does it. Just a reminder for my fellow animals lovers. When we take a pet into our lives, as difficult as it is, we as humans need to put our emotions aside when it comes to their health. Their care is not about us, it's about them. I know deep in my heart that they are getting the best possible care and treatment with Dr. Ratner. Hug your babies, love them with all your heart and if they are in need of a fantastic veterinarians, I highly recommend Dr. Ratner AND Dr. Akkaya (who is new to Island Park Animal Hospital). Since I moved to Oceanside  it took me 2 bad experiences to find this veterinarian....  it was recommended by  my dogs groomer , and I have to say I'm not going nowhere else , they are extremely friendly , professional, and keep things real 100% ,  My Frenchie had a bad skin allergy , took him there thinking I was gonna come out with a 2000 dollars bill , and I was completely wrong , well not really ,  the veterinarian explained to me that  an allergy test wouldn't be 100% accurate, and that even if we put my dog on a strict diet , the reason of the allergy could be other , so instead of spending 2000 dollars on tests and allergy medicine , she was gonna put him on anti-itch medication,  ( which won't cost me an arm and a leg )  and it's been working wonders , my frenchie's skin looks  like when he was a pup ,  I haven't seen him scratching himself as he use to and best of all is I dont  have to  restrict his diet as I was doing it for the past two years     I highly recommend this place Read Less

I brought my dog in less than a year ago. We had worries about his paws as the skin between them were incredibly swollen and red. He also kept gaining weight, his skin conditions were horrible, very dry patches, tail was losing fur, etc. We came to Island Park Animal hospital with the hopes that we would get answers on our concerns. We left with no medication for the concerns, only that the doctor thought it was all normal. His words were "pit-bulls and bulldogs paws are known to become this way." He told us to use grain free food for his skin issues (unfortunately did not help). Last week i brought my dog to a different vet. Every single issue that we brought to attention at Island Park Vet which we were told were normal, we were given medicine at the new vet. His paws are incredibly infected with bacteria, he was diagnosed with severe diabetes, and has a thyroid problem. He is prescribed antibiotics, thyroid pills, and a daily paw soak to help the infection. I am very disappointed with my experience at Island Park Animal Hospital. How is it okay that i bring my dog to a different vet several months later and my dog is severely sick? Also, My aunts 6 year old dog was pooping blood.. she brought her to Island Park Animal Hospital in hopes to figure out why her dog was bleeding. The doctor told my aunt that she is just constipated and gave her 2 shots and sent her home, that night she ended up passing. I will not suggest Island Park Animal Hospital to anyone. Read Less

Dr. Ratner, Lorri, Michael, and everyone else at IPAH provided superlative care for our dog Cupcake throughout her 14 years. Cupcake was not easy to take care of - she had chronic skin and digestive issues related to severe allergies, and they never gave up on helping me manage her symptoms (we did eventually get it under control). They are expert, practical, patient, creative, and compassionate. They are also very fairly priced. I wouldn't consider going anywhere else for my pet care. Read Less

Island Park Animal Hospital is where you wanna take your loved furry children!!!!!!!Dr. Ratner, Lori, Jordana, Jess, and the two male vet techs who are always there (sorry don't know your names but you deserve recognition also) are simply the best!These people specifically and the staff are super friendly. They always do the right thing by their clients and make sure your animal receives the proper care. An added bonus, this is the most affordable office around.Dr. Ratner is great at what she does and is extremely knowledgeable. I wouldn't trust any other vet with my fur babies. This office has squeezed me in plenty of times. I take both my pups there. My pug injured her eye, conveniently at the office's closing time one evening leaving me in a panic and the office stayed open for me.My parent's dog/family dog had been suffering from many issues that we couldn't get to the root of and we were left with a unsettling feeling from our last vet. Turned out he had a lot going on between allergies, being overweight, severe skin yeast infection, hypothyrodism, etc. With our previous vet, while trying to figure out what was causing this yeast infection (which was very concerning, smelly and caused our dog's hair to be replaced with a scary looking thick black yeast clumps), we got no proper answers. I won't mention this vet's name but he is located in the area and made us feel like we were the worst dog owners. We never got to the root and his main course of treatment was eye drops due to ruling out allergies. Sure, so we gave it a go. Over and over again. He also said our dog would never produce tears again and eyedrops would be necessary multiple times a day for the rest of his life. The dogs condition only got worse and going to this office was far from comforting AND expensive. This was a heartbreaking experience not being able to help our dog.Thats when I knew we had to change vets! Dr. Ratner came recommended by family and friends of ours. BONUS - Dr. Ratner's office is VERY AFFORDABLE. They are not looking to dry out your pockets here. AND they actually made sure your animal is getting the proper treatment. When I brought this dog to her office..she was able to tell me what was going on right off the bat, and guess what eyedrops were not in the treatment plan NOR have they been added to this dogs treatment plan. She also didn't jump to conclusions about what type of people we were and reassured us that we would figure out what was going on with this dog. I'm happy to say while our buddy boy has been under her and her staff's care - he has made a complete 180. His skin yeast infection is gone, he no longer smells, his ears and paws are in great shape, his stomach has grown a completely new beautiful coat, he plays like a puppy again and this once very overweight dog has healthily lost 16 lbs or so and is weighing in at a healthy weight!!WE CANNOT THANK DR. Dr. Ratner and Lori are absolute SAINTS! There has never been a time that Dr. Ratner has not returned a phone call. She doesn't try to give your animal numerous unnecessary tests just to get your money unlike a certain vets. Dr. Ratner is much more than a doctor she is just like part of my family.. I have been taking my dogs here for years and I couldn't be happier. Dr Ratner is extremely knowledgeable. I can always get an appointment same day in case of an emergency. I just picked my 14 yr old dog up from here and couldn't be happier!  I've been using them for my dog's entire life; with the exception of a few times when I was out of state. Normally,  if my dog was having a procedure,  I'd be worried sick, but here, I have the utmost confidence in their abilities. My parents also use her with a variety of animals, even wild bird, and as always she's treated every one of them with the dignity they deserve.  Her diagnosis have always been right on the mark, and she's persistent in looking for an answer when one's elusive.If you're looking for a place where you can feel confident that you're doing what's in your pet's best interest, Island Park Animal Hospital is your best option.  And by the way, I love the post Hurricane Sandy renovations! Dr. Ratner is a great veterinarian. She doesn't put your pet through any tests or treatments unless she's absolutely sure they're needed. Her examinations are thorough and she always explains her diagnosis in an easy to understand manner, no technical jargon that throw some people into a panic. If your pet is sick and doesn't absolutely need to be admitted, she won't force you to incur the cost of an overnight stay like some vets. Every one of her staff members are also compassionate and helpful. Do not be fooled that the building isn't set up like some of those fancy pet hospitals. Her exam room and waiting area are clean and she focuses on the animals, not a flashy environment, that's what's important. I highly recommend her! Read Less

Brought 'Geddy', an outdoor cat, into Island Park Animal Hospital in early July after he sustained an injury to his right hind leg. I also wanted him to be neutered and receive some basic vaccinations. Dr. Ratner did a fine a job of diagnosing the likely cause of injury (bite near the leg's middle joint), which she treated with an antibiotic given intravenously. The neutering and vaccinations went flawlessly as well, and Geddy was back home within a day. Since then, he has been getting around noticeably better and is back to his old self. Worth noting: Dr. Ratner earned my respect by avoiding recommending costly procedures that would've been of little or no benefit to my pet. Less scrupulous vets I had gone to in the past tried doing that, and I resented it. Ironically, the fact that Dr. Ratner didn't try to sell me on anything not necessary is one of the main reasons I will return to her with my other pets. Also worth noting: Dani, the vet's assistant, is tremendous! Nice young woman who does her job well, is very patient and has compassion for the animals and their owners. Read Less
