Upstate Veterinary is a spacious, well organized and highly professional veterinary hospital. The staff are friendly, compassionate and excellent. We have brought our three pugs to see opthalmologist Christa Corbett numerous times, including once when our dog Bailey required delicate surgery to save his eye. I brought my daughter with her terminally ill dog. She knew what the 'right' course of treatment should be and was ready to make that decision. The doctor spoke to her in such a way she had to defend herself. Euthanasia should not be chosen lightly but it should not be condemned by the professionals either. $$$$$$$ Only go here as a last option for a real emergency. There are excellent vets in this area that do not charge the exorbitant prices that this facility does. $135 for literally a five minute visit mind you the medication was three times as much as my regular vet charges the $135 was for the five minutes not the meds. I do not like the fact that you are not allowed to go into the room with your pet they take the pet to the examining room and you are not allowed to go in until they call you I have never heard of such of a thing. I have been to many different facilities with my pets. This place is awesome. I have dealt with the neurologist and cardiologist who are both amazing! All the staff are caring and friendly. I have nothing but good things to say about Upstate Veterinary. They are knowledgeable and compassionate. When your pet is in their care you get updates twice a day after the vets make their rounds. You can call anytime for an update on your pet and you can visit your pet while they are there for treatment. Read Less

This facility and the skilled care of Dr. Todd M. Bishop saved my dog's life. Last December (2016) my 7 year old Dachshund 'Beans', was stricken with debilitating back/neck pain. After -several- visits to our regular vet they recommended an MRI be done at Upstate. This dog was in so much pain he screeched anytime he moved. I took him to Upstate at 4:00 am on a Sunday, they admitted him, hooked him up to IV pain meds, did the MRI and by 3:00 Monday Dr. Bishop was performing surgery to remove a disc from his back. The great thing was that the Dr. was confident enough that he could enter through the underside of his neck (and not thru the back) which greatly shortened the recovery time. I feel very blessed and lucky to live in a time when vets can do these kinds of procedures. Of course everything good comes at a price, but when you love your dog like I do, you can find a way. I agree with Michael and John M!  We were also sent from our local vet who charged us over $400 for our dog who we thought had something stuck in her throat because we heard her wheezing..X-rays were taken but since they didn't have equipment to help her we were referred here! The X-rays were sent but they said they were grainy and had to be retaken.. Ok first things first we were given an estimated bill of $1,100 low end if she had to stay one day or $1,700 for 2 days!  We were then told after waiting almost 2 hours that she didn't have an obstruction!  Since I heard her barking, I said I would take her home.. I paid over $300 and drove the 45 minutes home.. Next morning I got a call from the first vet that told me that " upstate vet wants to know if they can call me!  I called them and was told " the radiological person on call  might not have made right decision and I should bring her back no charges!  Ok!  We went back and another X-ray taken ,again nothing in her throat!!! Grrrr! But now, Doctors come in and say I should get an ultrasound on her stomach since she had diarrhea...playing on my sympathy for my dog I agreed and after was told the test was $340!  Was told she had kidney stones and needed to be spayed because she might die if she got infection!  Left disgusted!  Next morning I went to another vet in my town ( where I should have went first)  and he took free X-rays and determined she had a stomach virus!!! Very sad we had to pay $ 1,000 elsewhere to be told that! Read Less

Highly professional.  Our dog was given a diagnosis that appeared terminal but out regular vet had us go there to get some tests to be certain.  They were great in walking us through the sad procedures in putting him down. Very attentive and competent.  They do this all the time but we felt like we were their only clients.  These guys are great. Read Less

I am so grateful, not only for everyone at Upstate Veterinary Specialties, but also for the fact that they are there and can be counted on to do an excellent job. I have needed their help on numerous occasions and always found them to be caring, knowledgeable, as efficient as possible, and sooo good at what they do. UVS is an invaluable asset to our community and we are fortunate to have them. Late Friday night, we brought our guy in (again), and from being greeted by Amber at the front desk, who appropriately judged our level of concern, to the gentle assessment by the veterinary technician, Jennifer, to the calm, pragmatic, and professional, yet friendly and expeditious treatment by Dr. Outterson, we knew our boy was in the best hands. (Please don't think I mean to leave out the many others in the back who must have also helped take care of our little buddy.) They must all have such stressful jobs, and probably not always as appreciated as they deserve, but I am immeasurably comforted knowing they are there and I can count on them - not only for my pets, but for the rest of our community's pets, too. I can't thank the staff here enough for how sweet and caring they are. I had to put my poor cat down a month or so ago and they were so sweet, understanding, and sincere about the whole situation. I just had to bring my dog there for a back injury he's currently going through and again, absolutely the nicest, greatest people to work with(besides my actual vet of course lol). Any time any of our dogs had to use Upstate Veterinary Specialties we have had only good things to say. Currently one of my dog's is under the care of a Cardiologist there, Dr. Wey. He has incredible bedside manners, very knowledgeable in his specialty and is always willing to listen to all my questions without me feeling like I am being rushed out of there. My local vet referred me to Upstate Veterinary Specialties and their surgeon Dr Besancon when my cat Chubs was diagnosed with a diaphramatic hernia. Chubs had his surgery on December 5th. Dr Besancon is an amazing, talented surgeon and because of his talent,skill and dedication to his patients my Chubs was able to come home where he is now recovering nicely (and quickly too!). From my first phone call seeking an appt, to having an emergency and having to change that appointment, everyone I spoke to on the phone was very compassionate and helpful. The care is great, my dog has severe allergies which the dermatologist literally cured with allergy shots (best thing I've ever done!). But I feel like they can be overpriced, charging you for every little detail. My other dog had an ultrasound which showed a mass, then had it aspirated and they charged me for two ultrasounds even though it was at the same time. This is a specialist vet group. My dog developed diabetes and then cataracts and glaucoma in one eye. She's doing much better now she's on insulin and had eye surgery. Dr. Corbett is a wonderful ophthalmologist whose surgical skills have improved my dogs quality of life. Yes they are expensive but if you love your pet they are worth the money. Read Less

After waiting an hour and a half in a room with not ONE person coming to check on my dog who was puking blood, I decided to go out and ask if she was going to be seen soon, with being told someone would be there in 10 minutes, I proceeded to wait another 20 minutes before leaving (still no one came in) and going to Capital District Veterinary Referral Hospital where my girl was immediately taken in and diagnosed. My husband and I took our dog Duncan to Upstate Veterinary specialists yesterday. Duncan was displaying some strange neurological behaviors and visited with Dr. Bishop to get some answers. I called on Monday and got an appointment the very next day. The neuro team was excellent in the clinical evaluation. This is the best veterinary specialist i have ever been too. The staff here is wonderful. I can't thank the Ophthalmology department enough. Dr. Corbett, Mark and Katie are amazing. My dog developed diabetes and came to Upstate Vet Services in 2/16. After 4 days she was on insulin  and life began to normalize. Over the summer she began to develop a cataract in one eye and then in September her second eye became milky and began to drain. Dr. Corbett assessed my dog and she had a cataract in one eye and glaucoma in the other and her vision was worsening.Surgery was done  to remove the cataract and do a corneal repair and the eye with glaucoma was beyond help and was removed.My dog now sees and is leading a more normal life again.  Dr. Corbett is compassionate, honest and a skilled eye surgeon. Learn from my hesitancy to seek medical relief for my dog-GO- it's expensive but if you love your pet like family just GO. Read Less

Absolutely terrible. Refused to take my cat who had been referred from our regular vet for serious issues. Didn't care at all. After waiting in an exam room for them to do absolutely nothing for him in over 5 hours, due to them "not able to take my deposit & bill me" elected to take him home & find somewhere else because they were uncaring and I was fed up. My Phillip passed the next morning and then I receive, of all things, A BILL, that they claimed they could not do. In the end I wouldn't recommend this place to a single person. All the staff members here are really top notch! Friendly, kind, caring and efficient, but patient, too... even when we may not be at our best. No one goes here because everything is fine... something must be very wrong with a beloved pet or you won't have the need to visit... We are lucky to have these services available locally. Wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. My dog has been violently vomiting for 2 days, and unfortunately we her Vet couldn't see her. I brought her in to this awful place, which was empty when we walked in, and they left us waiting in a room for an hour and half... HORRIBLE SERVICE. Our puppy was sick, we brought her here. They were quick to find a diagnosis while keeping our costs low. Unfortunately, we had to put our puppy to sleep. After all is said and done with, this team of people showed compassion and offered every option they could. In the end, we cuddled with the puppy as she closed her eyes. What an incredible resource for pets and their owners in the capital district.   The building is  beautiful, spotless and  efficiently run. I  brought my ailing cat to consult with neurovet Dr. Todd Bishop.   He was incredibly knowledgeable and compassionate.  He took his time to explain all  medical possibilities, diagnostic possibilities and treatments.  He gave Jack a very thorough hands on  neurological examination.   I felt he had a  very good handle on my cat's issues and  together we decided on a very logical course of treatment.  I felt so relieved to finally have a better  understanding of  my poor kitty's problems and feel he is in the most capable hands available.   Can't really say enough to highly recommend this facility.  The cost with 3 different meds was so reasonable.  170ish.
