It is true that you can usually get an appointment very quickly which is great. But, two times I have dealt with a situation where I was waiting to get test results (that normally take 1.5 weeks max to receive back) for close to a month. I spent hundreds of dollars on an allergy panel for my dear dog, who was having bloody diarrhea, and I called about three times almost three weeks post test-results, to continually hear that a doctor would call me back. It is very poor relationship management to keep someone waiting that long when test results deeply effect the daily life of an animal. It makes a patient truly feel like they are not cared about. Another time, when my cat was on death's door, we were waiting for the results of a scan and a doctor called and left a message saying to call back for results. We called back and heard that the vet wouldn't be in for three days and we'd have to wait until then, meanwhile our cat was vomiting blood, nearing the end of his life. I demanded service, heard back about 6 hours later from a different doctor, telling me we should put our cat down immediately. Had we not heard from them for several more days, our poor cat could've suffered a terrible fate. I will say that the support staff at the front desk is always wonderful but they aren't the rude vets who think they are so important and have no time to make a 5 minute phone call when it is dealing with THEIR patients' lives. I am completely disgusted by the experiences that I've had there of late. Meanwhile, I have been a customer there for almost over 12 years. If I were you, I wouldn't go here if you didn't need to - they are overpriced, an assembly line and truly don't care about the livelihood of your animals. It's all business. Update on 1/30/18: I'd also like to add that no one called to follow up about our cat. We had a local travel vet come to our house to euthanize him. But the original vet on the case did not call back to check in on our cat or even see if he was still alive. To their knowledge, they may actually still think he's alive. Crazy! Read Less

I've brought in two obviously sick and in pain cats with expectations that they would be seen, evaluated, diagnosed and treatment started. Not the case here. Both times I was told to either leave the cat or bring the cat back later. One cat had a huge tumor behind her eye and was moving into her brain. The tumor was putting great pressure on her eye and causing pain. The vet I saw on Friday told me to bring the cat back on Monday for tests. Saturday, I realized the cat was in intolerable pain and suffering and returned to Shaker. Thankfully this visit I had a smart female vet who wasn't playing games. She moved it out, got x-rays, and told me what was going on and that she strongly suggested putting the cat down immediately. I saw how large the tumor was with my cat's eye bulging out. I also saw how much pain this cat was in. So, I had this beloved 15 yo cat put down immediately to stop the suffering. That was it. One incompetent fool og a vet playing games with me and it was obvious the cat was in serious trouble. The day was still early, the waiting room mostly empty, no excuse for blowing my cat off from Friday morning to Monday. Stupid, incompetent, game playing. Did I add terribly over priced? I am more than happy to pay for my cats and dogs as my wife and I love them terribly. But pushing off an obviously pained animal just to play testing games later on was it. The Only vet we will see in emergencies is Dr. Patrick. Smart, no game playing. The rest of the vets are stupid -- point blank. VCA SHAKER: You have read the same complaints leveled at you for running up charges and rude staff and incompetent vets. Do something. Change the way you operate. The prices are fairly high compared to other vets in the area. Cost of treatment should be discussed with clients BEFORE treatment is done. Many people these days live paycheck to paycheck and therefore may not be able to afford certain treatments. If prices were discussed before-hand and an estimate of total treatment cost provided, customers would be able to choose a treatment plan they can afford instead of being surprised by a high vet bill at the end. This would result in many more happy long-term clients. Instead, you are losing customers because you decide to go ahead with the treatment and then at the end give the client sticker shock when they see the price. I can't understand this business model. Negative 10 stars if I could. Brought my cat who couldn't walk and wasn't eating to be checked out. I walked in the door already crying thinking it was time to put him down. First thing I'm told when I get in the door is that the cat needs to be in a carrier. While I would generally understand this rule my cat was hardly able to move and completely out of it. Once I explained this I got a snarky remark back saying it didn't matter and the cat needed to be in a carrier. After a 20 minute wait in the waiting room we were taken into a room and my cat was taken into the back to draw blood. He came back sopping wet, cold to the touch and shivering. He had heart issues and upper respiratory issues most of his life. I discussed euthanasia with the dr but she recommended doing a dental procedure telling me that that was the next best step. She said she suspected he wasn't eating because his teeth are rotting and need to be removed. My cat was basically dying in my arms and they wanted to put him under to clean and pull his teeth. 15 YEAR OLD CAT WITH HEART ISSUES! This would have killed him for sure!! I walked out and never came back. I found a wonderful vet to come to my home and euthanize my cat in peace. They were incredibly kind and almost the same price with cremation and returning ashes. These are the rudest money hungry people I've ever met. They don't care for a second about your pet only the paycheck. I promise it's not worth the risk of going here. I have been frustrated with very long wait times several visits in a row. Most recently, I waited twenty minutes for a simple tech appointment. After waiting this long, I left. I didn't get a call until thirty minutes after my scheduled time, as they were looking for me. Thirty minutes waiting for an appointment is unacceptable. No one ever so much as mentioned it might be a long wait. This is consistent with prior experiences. To make matters worse, I sent an email to the email address provided in all of these Google reviews a full week ago and never heard anything back. Apparently Shaker Vet will respond to customer concerns only when they are public. Read Less

I had brought my pup here for an emergency late one evening and instantly felt like home. That all changed when I had another emergency with my pup and was disrespectfully spoken to by Dr. Becker. My pup had been restless, running a temperature, and had uncontrollable twitching for a couple of hours. I took her to the emergency vet, whose staff was helpful, friendly, and understanding. The emergency vet had given my dog 2 injections and an oral medicine. Upon leaving, they told me the medicine should kick in by the time I got home. It hadn't. So when I called the emergency vet, they told me to give her another pill and that should start working in an hour. Well, I waited 3 hours. So called Shaker Vet to see if I could my dog in for the first appointment. The person took my information and said she didn't have access to the scheduling but she'll have a doctor call me. About 5 minutes later, Dr. Becker called. I began to explain the medicine the emergency vet gave my dog and told her it wasn't working. She rudely said, "you need to chill out! The medicine doesn't work instanteously. It's only been a couple of hours! We open at 8am - you can bring your dog in then" and then hung the phone up. I understand what it is like to be on-call, I did it for 10 years working in the resident halls for a college. But I would never speak to a client the way Dr. Becker spoke to me. Where was her empathy? Her patience? Her concern? If she does not like her sleep interrupted, she need not be on-call. And because of Dr. Becker's unprofessionalism and lack of concern for my emergency, Shaker Vet will be the LAST vet I will bring my pup ESPECIALLY if we have to be seen and treated by Dr. Becker. I would HIGHLY recommend Shaker, especially Dr. Little & Dr. Becker. Both of these doctors have multiple times worked many miracles on my dogs getting that back to their healthy selves. They are very easy to get appointments with as well, they have some of the best hours in the capital district, making it easy to avoid the pricey emergency clinic. They even have emergency hours on top of late appointments, late meaning after 7pm for those that work normal day jobs. I think sometimes they are a bit more expensive than other clinics but you get what you pay for and Shaker literally rocks. I would not trust ANYONE else to treat my animals. Read Less

I wish I could rate Shaker Vet Negative 10 Stars. After taking my puppy to board at Shaker Vet for 4 days he was returned to my care so dehydrated and sick he didn't recognize me and so sick he had to be hospitalized to get IV fluids and placed on anti-diarrhea medication and pain meds for a week. Not to mention that while he was at Shaker Vet he was supposed to see the vet for vaccinations that he never got and the heartworm medication he was supposed to go home with wasn't ready when he picked him up and the front desk tried to tell us he had never had it before (he was given it in his new puppy kit but they never kept a record of it in his health charts). Then when I called to complain about the how sick he was and how appalled I was by the HORRIBLE treatment our VET provided, I was told, by the vet, "well if I had seen him, I could have helped him"....she was supposed to see him but, again, they didn't do their job. Then I was told if it was a "money-thing" they would give me half of my money back. ARE YOU KIDDING ME????? Try, caring for the animals you are supposed to be looking after. It was a "you didn't take care of my PUPPY-THING." They obviously just stuck my 12 week old puppy in a cage for 4 days and left him to fend for himself and then acted like it was his fault he didn't make a stink that he was sick and neglected the whole time. The real kicker is over a year later, they are still sending me vet reminder cards. This place should be shut down. I hate you Shaker Vet. Read Less

Wow, where to start with how great my experience was a Shaker Vett! My cat is not a regular patient and when I called at 8:45 a.m. on a Saturday, they were able to see us just 30 minutes later. My cat had been really sick with something stomach/intestinal related and was approaching dehydrating. Both the vet tech, Terry, and the vet, Dr. Mackay, were really thorough with their approach to treatment. Rarely have I received such good care myself when going to a human doctor. I spent almost three hours in the exam room getting a diagnosis, explanations and demonstrations for treatment and no time did I ever feel rushed or that my questions were unnecessary. While a visit that involves x-rays, blood work and medicine to take home is not cheap, the peace of mind I have knowing that my cat was given such a comprehensive examination, is well worth it.Read Less

Our dog became suddenly ill. Shaker is or rather was our vet so we naturally we brought her there. After tests were in , our June had cancer. We found out how badly the cancer had progressed by coming home to a lengthy message left on our answering machine, they had our cell number as well but chose the answering machine, hmmm. To make a long story shorter, we were passed around to multiple Dr's, yet no one took the time to tell us our options or even discuss the results in detail of the ultra-sound that showed the cancer. We decided to be pro-active and investigate on line what steps we could take to help our Junie. We had to ask the Dr to prescribe specific meds that could extend our pets quality of life, they didn't offer us any paths to take. The most responsible person to help us and treat us with some dignity was Cathy, the receptionist. No Dr ever got back in touch with us to see how June was doing. Shameful! We pulled June's records and went to another area vet, on Wolf Rd in Colonie. They took the time to read June's records, view her cancer results and discuss a plan, in detail, to help with June's quality of life. Well, June died this morning, our hearts are broken and we are angry with the way Shaker wrote June off, just another terminally ill old dog... We have 2 other dogs, never will they see a Dr at Shaker, no matter the circumstance. This happened, choose wisely for your pet, they rely on us to do the right thing. Read Less

Becker. I had 5 sick kitties with upper respiatory condition. Shaker fit me in and although the wait was long, Dr. Little was amazing. I had been to another vet prior and the antibiotics weren't helping. Shaker did a complete physical, and some blood work. and gave them shots of antibiotics and pain meds and sent me home with an appetite enhancer that was a wonder drug. They were so good to my cats. I thought i was going to loose one and maybe more and they took a turn for the better after going to Shaker. thank you Dr. Little and staff. Read Less

Read Less
