Mineola Animal Hospital

My dog Silky was injured due to a mishap in my home. From the moment we entered the hospital we were treated like valued clients. The front desk was immediately attentive and the doctor was superb. Needless to say, this near tragedy ended happily. I recommend this hospital without reservation. If another incident befalls my dog, she is coming back here pronto. I have been going to Mineola for my pets for the last 9 years. I have had nothing but wonderful experiences. Dr. Deme is kind, compassionate and sweet as they come. Dr. Kolins is so down to earth! The staff really care about the animals. I just had my 2 large pits in last week and they were greeted like family. I can't understand why anyone would post such negative things about "my" hospital. The prices are great, the staff is great. I've been to many hospitals over the years with my dogs. To make comments and try to damage the reputation of this great place because of one poor day is just wrong, in my opinion. I wouldn't dream of bringing my fur kids any where else. Read Less

There's plenty of other options in the area. Highly recommend New Hyde Park Animal Hospital where the doctors and staff are much more professional, accommodating, less focused on a profit and overall just a lot more compassionate and hospitable. We used to take our older dog here and the diagnosis always seemed to be "the expensive route"...not to mention wrong on multiple occasions. The first time I brought my puppy here I remembered why my parents stopped bringing our family dog. I never felt like the doctors really cared all that much and their lack of personality wasn't countered by their skills or abilities. My girlfriend would bring her dog here to get groomed and they would always say they needed to sedate the dog (a miniature poodle who is probably the size of a large rabbit, not much of a threat..). I thought this was odd and could have been resolved with a simple muzzle if the issue was that bad and just some patience and care. After a few incidents with pick up times and other annoyances, I convinced her to bring him to New Hyde Park. Low and behold they did the grooming with no sedation.I don't trust the staff or the doctors here. There was one vet tech/assistant who was always pleasant and seemed like he genuinely cared for the animals.Also, New Hyde Park and Mineolas facility operate under the same umbrella. I took in my puppy and was delighted with their service.  Very friendly staff, the vet I had was nice.  Very Informative and quick and easy service.  Plenty of parking in the back, there in a private entrance straight to the office. Read Less

We are no longer customers! My husband arrived 7-8 minutes late to a 3pm appointment and was told that because he was late, he would have to re-schedule. The receptionist advised his appointment was at 2:45pm. My husband received and we still have a voice mail confirmation for the 3pm appointment. The staff would not concede their error and would not allow my husband to keep this appointment. I reached out to them via email and asked for an apology and included the voice mail but they did not respond so I'm writing this review. To add injury to insult, the last appointment we had last fall, my husband waited one a half hours for a scheduled appointment. This vet needs to reconsider how they treat their customers. Amazing facility with friendly staff. Dr.Kolins is helping keep my kitten with congestive heart failure , KELSO, alive and comfortable for as long as possible. Another vet misdiagnosed him and said he had NO chance and should be euthanized. I travel 40 min to his office and it is worth the trip to know Kelso is receiving the best veterinary services. My dogs have been going to Mineola animal hospital for 10 years now. The experience has always been exceptional from the front desk to vet techs to the wonderful care the Doctors provide. Brought my daughter's sick puppy in yesterday. This is a GREAT place! They were able to fit us in right away and the staff was wonderful. The office is clean and comfortable. Dr Kolins was thorough and caring, explained everything and answered all my questions. Front desk staff was excellent and the prices were very reasonable. I have 6 animals and they all go to Mineola. I've been to other vet offices and I've always left feeling rushed and unresolved. It's a completely different feeling at Mineola. The facility is clean and the staff is always attentive, friendly, and professional. Dr. Kolins is my favorite to see. He's extremely informative, knowledgeable, and treats my pets as if they were his own. The vet techs handle my animals with care and compassion. I highly recommend this place. Read Less

Very sad to say that I have been a patient there 9 years. To find out they do not care about their patients and call you about random price cost of an animal that was not seen last week. I was so uncomfortable when I left there I went to a second opinion of my 2.5 lb yorkie. When I trusted Dr Demi for 9 years. And I did not get a call about her stool sample. But got an estimate on a different dogs teeth cleaning with all these additional charges. If your company is in finical trouble please do not take it out on small animals and their families I have always trusted dr Demi. But now I have a different opinion.Read Less

I have been bringing my pets here for years, mostly for yearly exams and vaccines since all my pets live inside and are mutts.  Thus, they have been have been healthy.  The vets here almost always ran late but it was tolerable since in the past, I could schedule for my days off.However, my 16 y/o cat developed an issue over the last week so I made an appointment for 12:30 the next day.  I was told no one was scheduled before or after me so they should be running on time.  This was important because I had to use my lunch hour to bring the cat there, which I told them on the phone and via email.  I dropped off the requested fecal sample 8 am before work and asked if I could also drop off the cat and meet him at the appointment time (they did not have any room).Once there at 12:25,, I waited 20 minutes.  After asking the receptionist how much longer,and was told another 1 minute, I waited another 5 minutes.I ended up leaving, driving to Great Neck Animal Hospital (very quickly) where they took him immediately, did the exam after I left and kept him until after work.  The one time this regular "patient" had a real medical issue, this vet could not see him in a timely fashion and did not seem to care. I do not even see doctors who run late for myself, never mind for a cat so will not be doing that again.Bottom line is If you have a real job, and your time is valuable, do not go here. Read Less

The female vet that was there doesn't know what the drugs she prescribes actually do. Thankfully the manufacturer as well as several other vets do, and we're able to inform me how wrong she was. In October of 2015 my dog Scrumpy was diagnosed with a severe ear infection at a local vet (not mineola animal hospital)  A week later there was no improvement.  I then went to a vet I frequented (not mineola animal hospital) and they started to treat my dog.  After two months it became very clear that the infection was not clearing up and she was getting dangerously ill.  The head doctor at this office told me that she needed her entire ear canal removed.  I was extremely hesitant to do the surgery and extremely scared.  Her surgery was scheduled for January 4th, she made it through her surgery and came home the same day.  The following week she became very ill again, even worse this time, I rushed her back to the vet and they said they needed to put more stitches and a drain in.. a week later, she's sick again.  I bring her back to the same vet and he tells me he needs to perform the surgery again or she will die.  he performs the surgery again but this time when she comes out of surgery she can't blink her eye and has facial nerve damage.  I was completely devastated and now she was required to stay for another week.  After all of this hell we got rid of the infection but now it got worse.  She started vomiting every single day, 7-10 times.  One time she threw up 16 times in one day.  I rushed her back to my vet and I told him I thought it was related to the surgery.  He told me I was "Crazy" and my dog had a GI problem and needed to be scoped.  I refused to scope her because I thought it was too much hell at this point to put her under and logically it made no sense.  I brought her to another vet in my neighborhood (not mineola animal hospital) for a second opinion and he said he couldn't figure out what was wrong with her.  I consulted and brought her to 15 vets in 7 months with no explanation of her illness.  I was referred to Dr. Kolins at Mineola Animal Hospital  by a good friend of mine and figured what do I have to lose at this point.  Dr. Kolins sat down with me, was extremely patient, allowed me to explain my 9 months of hell, read over all of her medical records and within 15 minutes he diagnosed my dog, I was taken back because all the vets I had seen before immediately tried to pressure me into getting a sonogram, scoping, barium injections/xrays.  I left Dr. Kolins office praying that this would work but I had already prayed so many times before I did not want to get my hopes up.  Scrumpy has not thrown up once since she started her medication 5 days ago, she now goes for long walks where before she couldn't make it one block without throwing up, she eats all of her food, she gained weight, and has life back in her eyes..  I owe everything to Dr. Kolins.  Not only did he save my little girl and he made me believe in miracles again.  I spent 9 months of agony trying to fix my dog.  My only regret is that I did not find Dr. Kolins and his wonderful staff sooner.  Thank you Doctor Kolins for saving my doggie! After searching for an animal hospital that had experienced vets for bearded dragons, I came across Dr. Kollins through Yelp and I could not be happier with my first experience. I called to make an appointment and the receptionist was very nice. I brought in my bearded dragon with a suspicion that she had a respiratory infection and Dr. Kollins was very kind and extremely informative. He knows his reptiles! He explained the bearded dragons body and immune system and showed me how to inject the antibiotics and reassured me that if I had any questions I could always give him a call. Additionally the receptionists were very nice. So glad I found a reptile experienced vet only 15 minutes away from me! Thank you Dr. Kollins! Read Less

The front desk staff here seem to be the primary problem. They are horrible at maintaining consistency (we were quoted one price for vaccines and a follow up visit and charged for a full follow up visit fee despite only being seen by the vet for a max of 8 minutes). They seem to be all about the money and much less concerned with the health and well being of our dogs. Even with something so important (i.e. The health of our 8 month puppy) they seem to have no problem offering inaccurate treatments and blatantly lie about the doctor finally calling us claiming he's been gone for 10 minutes when we have proof on our phone that we missed his call by 1 minute and hit call back within the next minute. They make these claims that medications will "clear anything out that your dog has" and then when we're told the treatment needed to be repeated the receptionist said she doesn't know why anyone from their office would tell us that initial treatment would essentially not need to be repeated (it was this same receptionist that told us the lie in the first place but is too incompetent to remember). Listen, I understand this is a business, however that does NOT mean you get to profit off of potentially harming my dog! I'll pay top dollar for top notch service but this place does not seem to offer that. From the other reviews it seems like there is a theme with their front desk staff not being very competent. I took my german shepherd to see Dr. Kollins.  Dr. Kollins will spend time with you when you are there in his office.  He gave me medicine and told me to let him know if the medicine worked.  $125 later and when the medicine didn't work, I placed a call to Dr. Kollins, not once but twice.  He never called me back.  I guess if you are not paying for an office visit, Dr. Kollins doesn't want to spend time with you.  I would have only taken a minute or two of his time, but I couldn't get a call back.  My daughter had the same problem with her german shepherd, too.  She spent $350 for a test for a digestive problem and she had to scream to get the results on the phone.  She had to keep calling and calling.  This is very poor medicine.  I did call his office staff to tell them that I would not use a doctor who refused to get on the phone and they just apologized.  There are more concerned vets out there.  Find them. Upon my first visit, I thought this place was wonderful....then I was hit with a $400 bill!  Ok, I was a little wary, but I can get over that as long as the care is good.  Well, after a few weeks, my pet was not better, so I followed up with the Vet (as directed to do so by him)....it took them 2 days and 3 phone calls by me, to get them to return a phone call.  And when I did get a return phone call, it was just the ladies at the front desk, relaying a message to me, not the actual Vet.  A few weeks later, the same problem.  I had to call several times in 2 days just to get an answer to my question.  This time, they didn't even bother to call me back.  I got the answer to my question, after I called them back a 3rd time.  Apparently the answer was written in my pet's chart but they just never bothered to relayed the message to me!  Definitely not top notch care at this place!!  Very disappointed. This place is one of the only vets I trust bringing my fur babies other than North shore animal league veterinary center.  In May, my beloved fur son was diagnosed with cancer.  The two other vets I brought him to said basically just let him live his happy days there's nothing I could do to help him.  I brought him to Mineola animal hospital where my friend Tanya works and I spoke with the oncology doctor there Dr Kolins.  He said we could do chemo to prolong his life and give him a better quality of life while he still had his time here with us.  Of course I said yes.  I trusted bringing him there for his 6 hour chemo treatments because not only was Dr Kolins a sweet doctor but his staff was the exact same way.  They were always extremely helpful and were straight forward.  They didn't try to get money for anything unnecessary like most vets.  I have referred a few friends here since and I will continue to do so :) Read Less

I'm new to the pet owning world so finding a vet was an adventure. I originally went to Crawford animal hospital in new Hyde park and I'll never go back. They try and hit you for the most money they can get out of you. My puppy recently hurt his leg and I was in need of a vet and wasn't looking to have to sell my car to pay for the bill. A friend referred me here and I had such a great experience. Tanya, the girl at the front desk was SO accommodating and fit us right in for an appointment within the hour being they were already booked solid. I then met with Dr. Kollins who was PHENOMENAL! He was so nice to my puppy and didn't do anything I felt was unnecessary. I will be sure to have my dogs medical records switched over to this animal hospital, because I refuse to take him anywhere else! Great job mineola animal hospital! I think this may be the best out of all the practices. I came here for an emergency visit for my dog, as GCPAH couldn't accommodate me immediately. This location is located near the corner of Willis Ave and Jericho Tpke (across KFC and near the Mineola diner). At first I grumbled about the parking, but really it wasn't that terrible - just not what I was normally used to. The staff at this location is what makes this place 5 stars for me. The secretary is extremely sweet and remembers everyone and their pet! The vet assistants are gentle and loving towards the animals and also help their clients out to their cars if they have trouble carrying their pet/pet carriers. Read Less

If you want a vet who really cares about you and your pet, do NOT go here.  Owner, Dr. Kolins, cares more about the money than the care of his patient.  He wins you over at first with a friendly personality, but at the end of the day it is all phoney and about the money.  He hospitalized my cat, a vital machine broke during the hospitalization while giving my pet medication.  They never told me about this (found out on my own with hospital records),  my cat left in worse condition, unable to walk (which he could before), and Dr. Kolins would not even take my calls or return them.  He knew he made as much money as he could and then was finished with my baby.  I then had to have my cat put to sleep somewhere else. Great place to take your dogs.  They are inexpensive and very friendly.  My dog was hit by a car and needed stitches, shots, medication and they charged easily half the price of other vet offices I checked out.  They took great care of my dog and I will never forget that.  The only unfortunate thing is Dr. Haf, who is the best vet, retired! The facilities look nice, but it's not as great as it seems. It is a bit more expensive than the other places and they really don't do anything more than a regular veterinarian place; the secretaries told me that the spaying my cat combined with micro chipping was almost $500. I don't know anyone who paid that much to get their pet fixed. The weakest part of the center lies within the secretaries. They don't take down the right stats, and even the date on the receipt was in the wrong year. Read Less
