City Veterinary Care

New York, New York
General Info
City Veterinary Care in New York delivers a veterinary service defined by dynamic movement and tranquil stillness. This clinic stands out among New York facilities for its exceptional adaptation to shifting animal postures. The initial session involves complex spatial analysis including the pet's weight anchoring patterns, eye movement frequency, and tail motion stability versus hesitation. Staff members adjust their positions using diagonal stances when direct approaches cause tension and employ pauses instead of vocal cues for animals showing over-attunement. Initial tools remain stationary within sight to help pets visually acclimate to their surroundings before interaction starts. City Veterinary Care delivers integrative diagnostics surgical consults pain tracking sensory response care and structured mobility rehabilitation. The system modifies each treatment session dynamically during its execution. Whenever a pet flattens its posture or redirects its gaze the session transitions to anchoring techniques which involve patterned movement or rhythmic steps to restore calm. Aftercare plans for owners include techniques to extend hands in side arcs, introduce movement contrast, and use visual anchors to guide routine reentry. This guarantees that post-visit behaviors remain stable without unnecessary spikes while home care routines maintain their regular flow. City Veterinary Care delivers an adaptive interaction for both New York families and pet owners across New York through silent signals and responsive pacing instead of traditional medical care.

I am a well seasoned, multiple pet owner, and lover. I have had numerous experiences at some of the best animal clinics and hospitals in the city, and I believe I come from a place of reason and rational. After 30 plus years at another upper westside vet practice, I decided after a very problematic experience that it might be time to explore some other options. Over the 30 year period there were mistakes made, moods erratic and great compassion, excellent medical attention, accomplishments and professionalism administered to myself and my beloved animals. I am not here to name nor disparage my previous Vet practice, as I am so very grateful for the years and care my animals received. No 30 yr relationship will be perfect, and if that's what you are looking for you will be greatly disappointed anywhere you go. In my more recent exploration to find a new vet practice that would care for my pets, I narrowed down and have decided to stick with City Vet on the upper westside. It was initially recommended to me by a couple of my friends separately who have all had consistently great experiences and feel confident about Andrew Kaplan's practice. And to trust them implicitly in their ability to diagnose, treat and care for their fur babies (some without fur too).In the last month, I have had a beloved cat pass away suddenly, a grief stricken partner of the pet that passed, a dog with 2 Patellar Luxations and a back problem. I brought a new kitten into the home, and unfortunately, my bad, he was not as healthy as the adoptive clinic said he was. That unfortunately led to my other pets being exposed and made very sick by the kitten's ailments. City Vet has been rallying with and for my animals and has shown great care and sensitivity in treating them methodically, professionally and with tender love and care. While my main Dr is Dr Kaplan, I have had the pleasure of Dr Kahn's and Dr Romero's attention when I've presented in an emergency, which I have multiple times now. While every front desk can be overwhelmed at times with billing, phone calls, appointments and emergencies, I would not say they are unfriendly or rude. In fact, they have all been efficient, caring and reasonable in responding to my needs. It has also been my experience that everyone I've met has been an animal lover, and ooozes that adoration freely when they are not bogged down with responsibility. There have been quite a few occasions where medical advice could've gotten me to do too much too quickly and increased my cost and I never would've known. But that never happened. Dr Kaplan, while responsive and sensitive has consistently not rushed to the big buck resolutions, and has instead been very respectful and conservative regarding my financial output. In fact, what I've concluded is City Vets pricing is not only competitive with NYC Vet prices, but, in my experience has come out quite a bit lower. I don't mind paying a bit extra to use their pharmacy as the convenance is also a very important currency to me. In closing, I would highly recommend City Vet to anyone who loves and cherishes their pets and feel confident in the care and services they provide. It is quite sad when a person who has had a loss or even a mistake has been made to throw the baby out with the bath water. These are humans and animals, sometimes things happen, life is far from perfect, but, here the odds are great that you will find a place to feel confident bringing your animals and in the care that you receive.Go with confidence, you won't be sorry. First things first, Dr. Romero is a very good vet and the front desk staff are generally friendly. However the person who runs the clinic (Dr. Kaplan), seems to be just another greedy vet. The idea that they are protecting against fake prescriptions online is ridiculous. Petco owns one of the Largest online pharmacies - they could easily have a preferred list. Read Less

They saved my dog! I did not have a vet in NYC and had been bringing him to a vet in NJ where my parents live. I had brought him to a vet in nj twice bc he had diarrhea....nj vet said he was fine. A few days later he took a turn for the worst. He got extremely ill to the point where he stopped eating and drinking. A friend had recommended city vet and I went in on a Monday morning without an appointment right when they opened. Since I was not a patient I was worried they would turn me away. They fit me in and he now sees dr. Mohr as his regular vet. Dr. Mohr was the one that figured out he has a food allergy (despite bringing him to the vet in nj several times). Their prices are fair and I trust them. Read Less

I've generally been pleased with the level of vet care at City Vet. The issue that I have with the practice is that the reception staff is often incredibly curt, rude, dismissive, snippy. If you can't be friendly and welcoming, you don't belong at a reception desk. This is not just a clerical job. People bringing an animal to the vet are often in distress, as are the animals. I cannot give a practice a high rating even if I'm generally happy with the medical care if the support staff is not welcoming and curteous. Dr. Kaplan needs to insure that those people who are the first and last to see patients are professional and friendly to all customers. Perhaps a "ratings" card left at the end of a visit will allow City Vet to see how the staff is treating its customers. Or maybe it's just not important to them. Read Less

I brought my cat here and they did a horrible job with her care 1) Never asked me questions about my cats current health state before making a diagnosis 2) waited until it was to late to suggest my cat go to hospital -- hospital was almost closed and couldn't provided necessary services until next morning 3) were unsympathetic to my concerns -- like a typical pet owner, I was very nervous about my cats health and needed my questions answered 4) vet was overcrowded and at least second floor (where the animals are kept in cages for prolonged treatment) is dirty and disorganized 5) reception staff is rude 6) overpriced (but I know many NYC vets are) 7) DOCTOR ROMERO was our doctor and I DO NOT recommend Advice, unless your pet needs very very routine care (such as vaccinations or routine check up) go somewhere else. Dr. Kaplan was horrible to me when my little Yorkie was dying.  I had been seeing another veterinarian who was away on vacation when my 17 year old stopped eating.  I had discussed with my regular vet about letting her slip away naturally when the time came, assuming she was not in pain.  I brought my little girl in just to make sure this was what was happening.  Dr. Kaplan offered to give her IV liquids which would only have extended her life a few days.  When I refused and said I didn't want to prolong this process, he yelled at me "Why are you wasting my time."  I ran out of City Veterinary Care crying.  The next day my girl said goodbye to everybody and died peacefully at home with me.  I would never go back to that place. If you love your pet and care for its well-being, go somewhere else. Negligent is too kind of a description for their services, at least in "Dr." Romero's case. I had given this location multiple chances, and that was a huge mistake. Their first priority is to get your pet out as soon as possible, while billing you as if they provided competent service. When I brought my dog in a couple years back, I brought to Romero's attention two smaller lipomas on his waist and a much larger one on his abdomen. While she aspirated the smaller ones, she completely dismissed the abdominal growth as muscle tissue, though the mass was movable and asymmetric with the other side. Didn't even aspirate. I came back again a month or two later for another test, this time insisting the larger mass be tested and low and behold, it was a large lipoma. Her examinations seemed tailored to take as little time as possible, even if that meant missing pertinent health issues. Fast forward a few months to when a mass on his waist had grown to the size of a baseball. Seeing that it constantly bothered him and having done some research, I went to City Veterinary Care to have it surgically removed. I also inquired/suggested whether a drainage tube should be installed for such a large mass to help drain any fluid that might build up, to prevent infection and facilitate healing. Well, they removed the mass, leaving a pretty jagged incision and no drainage tube. Guess how that turned out (see the attached photos). The wound seeped fluid and did not heal properly, and became somewhat infected. Apparently Google is a better vet than the butchers who work here. So, we brought him in once again (to be caged while waiting to be seen - 5/6 hours later than the scheduled time) and they finally put in that drainage tube I (not a vet) had suggested before the first procedure, and prescribed antibiotics. Oh, but before that happened, the clueless receptionist handed me a form and told me to sign it and give the go ahead for whatever they deemed necessary, and they would let me know what the cost was later on. No one else (doctor, administrator who had a clue) besides this high school drop out was available to give me any information whatsoever. Floored by the sheer gall of these guys to ask for my consent to bill whatever, but with no options at this point, I signed the form and had them perform the procedure to install the drainage tube and re-stitch him (to correct the hack job they performed initially). That was the last time I've ever been back, and I've been much happier with Hudson Animal Hospital ever since. Read Less

I hope the business owner or person with more authority read this and do something about it. I have been with City Vet for almost 2 years. Dont get me wrong, I love Dr Mohr and another male doctor that checks my dog every now and then. They are extremely nice and care much about the well being of my puppy. HOWEVER, the receptionist is very rude and ONLY the one I am talking about. So she was always so in rush, never explained something well, cery rude if I ask question about the bill, etc etc. At first I thought, oh maybe it was acceptable because I only care about the doctor since it is for my dog. BUT, after many times of ANNOYING and RUDE response, I can't stand it anymore. The last one is the unbearable one, so I has some question about pricing of some medicine that I purchased, she was annoyed already and explained rudely (as usual). After that, I decided to purchase one more package of the item and paid for it. Because she was rushing me, I left. After like 20 minutes and when I was already almost home, I realized she never gave me the item. I called them, and she responsed rudely, 'oh, we were about to call you'. BUT COME ON, IT HAS BEEN 20 MINUTES. She didn't even say SORRY. Not even once. SO I came back, very angry, picked up the items and left. I SWEAR TO MYSELF I WILL NEVER COME BACK HERE. NOT UNTIL SHE WAS REPLACED OR UNTIL SHE APOLOGIZE TO ME FORMALLY. HER NAME IS STEPHANIE, remember that. I hope someone really do something about this so the doctors don't lose their patients, just because of REPEAT BAD SERVICE FROM THE ONE RECEPTIONIST. Read Less

Hello to everyone who is evaluating this vet, I want to say that i am shocked by the reviews that i am seeing here. While most of the reviews seem to be centered around Doctor Kaplan, whom i have never used nor encountered, i disagree with the overall sentiment about this veterinary practice. My dog, has been a patient of city vet ever since we moved back to NYC from San Francisco and we have been unbelievable happy with their care. My dog has had respiratory issues her entire life and had been on predisone to counteract the symptoms which has many side effects. Upon meeting Dr Khan, whom i have come to respect enormously, she suggested that we transition her to Flovent which is an aerial steroid instead on an ingested one, her respiratory issues have improved tremendously. I have found Dr. Khan to be compassionate and knowledgeable and i trust her with my Cassidy's life. To anyone thinking of using this vet, i cannot speak of Dr. Kaplan because i have never used him but all of the other vets there have been great and always make sure to get back to me in a very timely fashion and follow up after all of our visits with a phone call just to check in. Gordon called it incontinence and perscribed medication for it. The medication didn't work. They kept increasing the dosage, still didn't work. Apparently Gordon couldn't figure out what was wrong and suggested testosterone injections and said he would get me mOre information. Weeks passed and nothing. I decided this was bullshit and went to get a second opinion. The new doctor told me that my 3yr old puppy was in KIDNEY FAILURE and had been in it for a while. They said a vet would've caught this with blood work. Turns out city vet care charged me for blood work but never actually did the blood work. Now ONE month after my dog being diagnosed he's in end stage and is dying. I have seen 5 doctors in the past month and nobody can save my dog because the disease is too far along City vet care is completely overpriced and they're care is complete bullsh*t. It's been over 2 years since my dog died while treated by Corinna Lai, and I still haven't recovered from the misinformation and outright lies which I discovered, and which were verified by notes I requested & documented by the technician. My 11.5 yr old chihuahua had advanced heart failure and was in distress when I brought her to City Vet. My regular vet at the office, Dr. Cloud, who always gave superlative care, wasn't in. Dr Lai was very reassuring that overnight care in an O2 cage plus meds would likely work. I asked to be kept informed about her progress, especially since my dog was very frightened by strangers and would be under a great deal of stress when not with me. I was able to check her progress at 4 pm (the last time I could call -- it was Saturday) and was told she was doing very well, was resting well, and that if I don't hear from them, it means everything is fine. I made it clear that since she was near the end of her life, I didn't want needless suffering and would opt for an alternative. At 8 am. Dr Lai called to say she died. When asked for details, she said she had been doing well and suddenly expired. Asked when it occurred, she said at 7:30 a.m. After further questions, she seemed to imply that she had been present all night overseeing her care. I was surprised at this and explicitly asked whether she was there. She said "yes" and that my dog didn't suffer. I thanked her profusely, since I assumed this was beyond typical care. There were some details which she offered which seemed evasive, so I asked the office for the progress notes on my dog's care and the notes of the overnight technician. I was astonished to learn that Dr Lai had never been there, that my dog was under a lot of stress, very uncooperative & trying to bite the technician, that they were unable to check blood pressure & temp during the night (with the last body temp at 97 --well below normal) and the cage she was in had a broken heater, so they added hot water bottles to try to keep her body temp up). She suffered horribly for many hours! My plan was for home euthanasia when it was needed. Instead, i am still reliving the nightmare that my pet suffered when she most needed comfort. Both Dr Kaplan and Dr Cloud spoke to me at length about the unethical behavior of Dr Lai, and agreed that it was totally unacceptable. I fully expected that she would no longer be on their staff. Sadly, she's there. I was moved to write this now because I read on Yelp that another patient was enraged that Dr. Lai lied about giving anesthesia to her aged dog. It's rare to catch such lies. How is one to know? Had I not asked for notes (most people don't) I would have assumed that there was just an unfortunate turn of events and thankful that at least a caring vet was there to do what she could and grateful for her efforts. The outrageous blatant lies I was told makes it clear to me that NOTHING this woman say is to be trusted. BE WARNED. Read Less

I first went to Dr. Kaplan when the office first opened 2002? something like that. I had a standard poodle. My dog received excellent care. When at 3 the dog got bloat Dr. Kaplan referred me (late at night on a weekend) to a place on the east side that performed the surgery and Dr. Kaplan followed up carefully. After that the dog was great until at 11 he developed an irregular heartbeat. This was corrected by medication that worked really well for about four months (we knew we were buying time). At the end Dr. Kaplan could not have been more caring and kind. I now have two young cats who see Dr. Cloudman once a year. My experience at CVC has been only positive. Read Less

First of all, I find it extremely suspicious that most of the reviews are either disturbingly bad or very very good. The negative reviews are painful and seem honest, while the positive ones seem to be professional and fake. That said, my personal experience with Dr. Andrew Kaplan was horrific. All he cares about is his public image. HE KILLED MY THREE YEAR OLD PERSIAN CAT BY MISIDENTIFYING HER BLOOD TYPE (something that never happens anymore with competent physicians) AND GIVING HER THE WRONG BLOOD TYPE IN A TRANSFUSION. He did not even attempt to treat her for this in the two weeks she was under his care. I actually figured out what he had done through online research of her obvious symptoms (he never told me). After she had died, I took her body to another vet who confirmed what he had done and told me how obvious it was because her real blood type was in her records and did not match the blood type Kaplan gave her. Yes, you read right, she had records with her correct blood type but he never attempted to get them from her previous vet. Kaplan even had the nerve to continue to lie about what happened to my cat until it was proven that he gave her the wrong blood type through lab testing. Even then he tried to lie about who was to blame and what happened. He told me every day I went to visit my beloved pet and saw her clearly deteriorating condition that the transfusion was a great success and that she couldnt go home because she had a common cold but would be home any day. In her medical records you can see her lungs collapsing, her organs failing, basically everything I saw happening before my eyes but tried not to believe because of Kaplan's assurances. She finally died when holes developed in her lungs. I repeatedly asked him why she was yellow, sluggish and couldnt breath. She was obviously dying. He knew it, knew he had messed up, and lied. Im sure he will write under this and lie again through his teeth, changing the events of what has happened to my cat Isabelle as a final insult to her. The incompetence is disturbing, but the callous choice to lie to me about her condition (so i didnt have the choice of ending her suffering) and not treat her for any of her symptoms (thereby robbing me of the hope of saving her) is more so. And all so no one would know what he did. Please, stay clear of this terrible man. Read Less

I've been there twice and saw Dr Kaplan both times. The first visit I was happy with. The second visit I felt like Dr Kaplan insisted on doing unnecessary blood and urine work results which were unnecessary in that they provided no information about the current situation and were not actionable. I went ahead and had them done anyway (pyschological pressure - you want to do the bext for your pet) but afterward, analyzing through the results realized I was right and felt bad about it for my cats sake - i.e. additional trauma to her. Would I go again? Well, if I absolutely need ""basic"" Vet care I might - because the large shiny/glitzy hospitals have big drawbacks themselves and i've had bad experiences there. Read Less

I moved to City Vet Care from another upper west side vet 4 years ago and have not looked back. First, I took my 11 year old dog, with complicated medical problems to Dr. Kaplan. He couldn't have been more attentive and serious about my dog's treatment. I saw amazing improvements in my dog's health under Dr. Kaplan's care. He personally returned my calls, often on his own time, which I very much appreciated. When I was faced with putting my dog down, Dr. Kaplan could not have been more compassionate and sensitive. I later took two of my foster dogs to City Vet Care. We did not see Dr. Kaplan, but saw another vet who was terrific as well. My current dog sees Dr. Kaplan, and we receive the same exceptional care. I have never paid much attention to the receptionists, as they are not treating my dog. Anyone in this city is aware that even the best park ave docs sometimes have mediocre receptionists, it should be a non-issue, unless it is an impediment to your pet's care, and if so, raise it with the vet. I would not take my dogs anywhere else. Read Less

I showed up for my appointment at City Veterinary Care and after waiting for almost an hour, I was told that there were no rooms available but the doctor would talk to me and examine my pet in the waiting room, if I was in ""such a hurry"". I am a native New Yorker and I?m used to space constrains but I felt that this was a bit too much. The waiting room was loud and hectic, and needless to say, it lacked any sense of privacy. I felt that we received a very unprofessional treatment, in spite of the fact that the doctor was very apologetic about the whole thing. I am shocked by what I saw and how badly I have been treated in this clinic. The staff is rude and incompetent. The office manager is an out of control incompetent appalling woman who screams at customers. If you tell the staff that they made a mistake, they blame you for it. There are always so many people working at the same time that you get a headache looking at them. The problem is that the staff is under trained and the office manager is so incompetent that there is a need for ten people to do the job of one competent person. The owner is no prize either. He is neither nice, nor diligent. My dog's problems went undetected and my concerns unheard by him. As a result, I was forced to take my dog some place else to get proper care. The owner is a condescending inconsiderate man with no manners and no respect for clients. My family has been awakened late at night by his calls. He would yell at me that he was tired! No one asked him to call that late and it wasn't even an emergency. He is ruder in person. He should know that speaking fast, laud, and over a client does not make him correct . I was somewhat hesitant as a few of the reviews here have said the staff can be rude, but I found that to be as far from the truth as possible. The two females in front were extremely nice and insisted on holding my puppy so I could tell they really liked animals. I saw a female Vet at this practice (initials are J.P.) about 1 week after I rescued my pit mix from the Manhattan ACC in January. The Vet was pretty terrible, as was the front desk staff. The Vet seemed visibly uncomfortable examining my large dog, and didn't want to do a dental check or look into her ears, which I THOUGHT was standard practice on a first-time visit?!? No dental check at all- didn't even look in her mouth for a second to see gum health, teeth condition, etc. I mentioned to the Vet, shouldn't you look in her ears?? And only then did she do that. Also, the Vet didn't take my dog to get weighed!! She said it wasn't necessary, but being right out of the shelter, I thought that would be standard for their files. Keep in mind, my dog was NOT AGGRESSIVE AT ALL, No nipping or mouthing AT ALL. She was just excited about being in new surroundings right out of the shelter. The Vet just seemed to be prejudiced towards the breed. For example, according the the ACC records, which I brought, my dog had been attacked 3 times while at the Manhattan ACC and when the Vet noted that, she commented in a sarcastic way, ""Gee, I wonder which dog started THOSE fights."". In a tone that made it seem she thought my dog was the one who instigated the attacks. Really sympathetic. The front desk staff is passable. Not outstanding, but maybe after the horrible Vet visit I'm biased. I don't know how Dr. Kaplan is, but if I ever go back, I'm specifically asking for him or going elsewhere. Read Less

Read Less

As worried as I was about her recovery, I can now say that everything went well and Bella is thriving. The surgeon was Dr. Kosovsky. My Dr. at City Vet is Dr. Romero, I highly recommend both doctors. Dr. Romero has been treating Bella since Bella was 8 weeks old and has helped me through Bella's shar pei fever attacks with the proper care and treatment.I can also give my thanks to the staff at City Vet in the way they make you feel comfortable and follow up with calls and relay messages as appropriate. Read Less

BE WARNED. Read Less

I cannot say enough about Dr. Andrew Kaplan. He treats my dogs as if they were his own. I travel from New Jersey as I have been unable for many years to find a vet that I can communicate with. While every other vet muzzled my fearful smaller dog, Henry, dr. Kdplsn sat on the floor to make it less intimidating. He was able to scale his teeth and do blood. Dr. Kaplan is topnotch! !!!! Read Less

A cat that had stomach inflammation, thyroid problems, chronic kidney problems, dehydration, arthritis (which he didn't tell me he had), weak, lost weight, etc. put him in their ""hospital"" in my emotional state. I had to beg him, repeatedly, hysterical to put him out of his misery; refused for a long, long time. Wants money only. Horrible, horrible vet.

Read Less

I took my first pet and new kitten for a check-up and shots to City Vet, and Dr. Mohr was my veterinarian. She is professional, waaay intelligent, kind and patient! Dr. Mohr took all the time I needed to answer the list of questions I had about caring for my new pet. I've been to City Vet twice, and each time Dr. Mohr never rushed us in or out, and did a very thorough exam. Her expertise and love for animals is evident. The staff was also professional and friendly. From the first phone call to the last visit, it was a great experience. I highly recommend Dr. Mohr. You will not be disappointed. Within the past year and a half that I have had my dog, I have had numerous bad encounters with vets in Manhattan. The biggest issues we had were that previous vets seemed concerned only with getting us in and out and not taking the time to calmly handle my guy and explain his medical situation adequately. They seemed far more concerned with my ability to pay for the visit than my pet's health. This is not the case with City Veterinary Care. I haven't got a single negative thing to say about it. Dr. Brown treats my doggy with kindness and insures proper treatment in such a carasmatic way. As soon as I walk in I am greated by the young man up front who is nothing but exceptional, He is courteous, friendly, professional and attentive to everyone that walks in the practice. With Dr. Brown in this practice makes this the #1 Vet Clinic in New York City. As for Dr. Kaplan I have only seen him briefly and from what I have seen his personality does not shine like Dr. Brown. When I enter to my appointment with Dr. Brown she is prompt and attentive and I am out within 30 minutes and I have seen Dr. Kaplan's customers sitting in the lobby waiting for him since prior to my scheduled appointment. Anyways, .Highly recommend anyone that accepts my calls on her offtime, Keep up the great work.

My advise to Dr. Andrew Kaplan is: close your clinic and open a fast food franchise- you?ll get the high volume and $ that you are clearly seeking without deceiving your clients. Read Less

Everybody makes mistakes, but a good doctor lives up to his mistakes and responsibilities. Read Less

In the interest of full disclosure I just recently got a new puppy and therefore have only been to City Veterinary care once. I was somewhat hesitant as a few of the reviews here have said the staff can be rude, but I found that to be as far from the truth as possible. The two females in front were extremely nice and insisted on holding my puppy so I could tell they really liked animals. This immediately put me at ease as being the owner of a new puppy is stressful enough as it is without having to worry about a bad experience at the vet. I didn't see Dr. Kaplan as he wasn't working on the day I went, but instead saw Dr. Sheehan who was as nice and as knowledgeable as you could possibly ask of a vet. Like I said, I only went once, but this place felt right from the start and I am very relieved to have found a place I am so comfortable with right from the start. Read Less

We were happy with our veterinarian, who is no longer with the practice, and vet tech. The front desk receptionists, however, are consistently unprofessional. They often put us on hold, while on a call for scheduling an appointment, and never return to the call. I am very impressed with the wonderful care I have received at City Veterinary. I saw Dr. Hurson today who treated my cat for a urinary blockage. She was able to help alleviate the problem without the more intensive catheterization usually required. I got the immediate impression that their top concern was for my pet's well being and felt reassured that I was really getting an expert diagnosis, treatment and advice without any of the unnecessary tests or procedures that I have unfortunately sometimes encountered elsewhere. Read Less
