I hate to write such a bad review for a local business but as an animal lover I feel compelled.I brought a cat I found in my building in for an examination. The doctor seemed immediately sketched out that I brought in a stray and within a few minutes of the examination the cat that wasn't being held properly went a little haywire. As soon as the cat showed any sign of being uncomfortable he looked at me and told me that this cat had a "feral streak." He said he had to sedate the cat I said fine whatever makes it easier. He then emphasized that this cat is likely very feral and would be hard to find a home for him. I even started to believe him even though I know a lot about animals and this cat approached us. He came out to us and sat on my friends lap. We initially thought he was a neighbors lost cat which is why we brought him in.(and put up signs obv)AnyWho the Traumatic experience for myself and the cat ended when the doctor told me that I should consider getting him declawed DECLAWED(!!) and presented a bill of 850$. This was about a week before they made declawing illegal. A few days after this happened we actually found a couch that was destroyed outside our apartment by a cat and also there was a U-Haul so we are pretty sure he was abandoned. We have since adopted the cat and he has integrated into our home perfectly. His cuddles with us and our other cats daily. He is a little skittish so I don't think he was treated very well by his previous family.  That being said I still can't believe this doctor told me that this cat was feral and that I should get him declawed. he has gotten along with our two existing cats and as well as ours and all our friends that have visited. This cats story has a happy ending but we will not be returning for future examinations. We have taken our yorkie and pit bull to Dr. Thompson for several years and she has provided terrific care, always compassionate, knowledgeable and very gentle. Then she became seriously ill and her husband, Dr. Moses, took over the practice temporarily. On the rare occasion that we had seen him before, we didn't like his manner. Now, having to see him for every checkup and sick appt was an eye opener! I was so thrilled when Dr. Thompson returned, healthy.Having read many of the reviews here on Yelp, I felt compelled to add my own two cents. I more than agree with those who paint a picture of Dr. Moses as very rough, rude, and always looking to pad the bill. Whereas Dr. Thompson, for example, would be conscious of the fact that I live on my social security when she billed me (and I was thankful for her reduced charges), Moses would put charges on the bill of which I wasn't even aware!  I can attest to all the many issues raised by reviewers: his real roughness with little dogs. Another example: my yorkie was dying and I wanted to hold him while we put him to sleep which had been the plan with Dr. Thompson.. But she wasn't in on the day it happened and Moses insisted that I put him on the table so he could inject him. I was too devastated to argue with him, so my little boy died in the table, not in my arms.On another occasion, I just called to get a prescription approved for heartworm medication for my new yorkie who had his last heartworm test in August, 2018. Dr. Moses, who is again covering for Dr. Thompson, refused to approve it because he likes to give heartworm tests in the spring. In other words, even though my dog doesn't need to be tested for another 4 months,  he wants to collect the test fee and visit charge now! When I found out that Dr. Thompson was ill again and would no longer be practicing, I was devastated for her and for the many pet owners and pets who will be deprived of her great care.  We will be taking our dogs to another veterinary office now. Dr. Moses provides unacceptable care, is rude, and quite frankly, in it for the money. It's too bad because he actually is a medically knowledgeable person. He just uses it for the wrong reasons. My prayers go out to Dr. Thompson and my gratitude goes out to the great staff who are kind and professional at all times. Thank you. Read Less

I had a great experience here with the vet and the tech staff. They were super nice, explained everything they were doing and why it needed to be done. You can tell they truly care about the animals they work with. I took my kitten for her first vet visit today and they were great. Overall the visit was under $200 which is what I expected. Not sure why people have given poor reviews for high cost or rude staff. I will definitely come back for my kitten’s future appointments and recommend it to anyone! Read Less

Please please please do NOT bring your precious animal here! I was reminded to write a review because I am still paying off the obscene bill I was handed by the evil scammer "Dr Moses". I discovered a lump on my 3 year old cats neck that has virtually appeared overnight. I had assumed he has gotten it from play fighting with my other cat. Anyway we took him into the vet because we were worried. Dr Moses handled my cat extremely roughly. He could clearly sense the vulnerability in 2 young girl's worried about their pet and decided to take FULL advantage of that. He tried to convince us our cat might have cancer and so needed a biopsy, multiple tests, basically everything under the roof. I had done my research and everything pointed to it being an abscess. However we were being told by a professional that it was something else and so went along with. Our cat went into surgery that day and we received a phone call saying it was in-fact just a an abscess and only puss was coming from it. HOWEVER we were still charged well over a THOUSAND dollars for cancer tests when even the nurse told us it 100% wasn't cancer because it was just puss and no actual tumor. To make matters worse, he didn't even get the puss out. The lump was still as large as it was when we bought him in. When we called Dr Moses on the phone, he said it would be another $300 plus for him to remove the remaining abscess. It's like he did it on purpose so he could charge us more. When we said he should have drained it properly, he told us to it ourselves by cutting open our cats neck (no joke). We were absolutely mortified. What kind of vet does this? We were charged so much money and he did absolutely nothing for our cat. We ended up taking him somewhere else and the vet there told us, our cat had been treated poorly and the abscess hadn't been drained properly which is why it came back. They were shocked when we told them the story. It was a minor procedure and shouldn't have cost what it did. This guy has no business being a vet and this place should not exist. He was rude, unprofessional and clearly only cares about making money off people worried about their pets. I wish I could give his place 0 stars. The ONLY positive thing was that the nurses were very sweet. They clearly do care about the animals and I urge them to find a more reputable clinic to work at. Please avoid this place at all costs. Your pet won't get the treatment they need and you will be scammed out of your hard earned money. There are many other reputable vets in the Washington Heights area that truly care about the wellbeing of your animal, this disaster of a place is certainly not one of them. Read Less

Please do not bring your pet here. I brought my aging cat to this clinic a few times over the past year due to proximity to my apartment, and I experienced (initially) mediocre to (at the end) incompetent treatment by Dr. Moses. (I have, perhaps sadly, never dealt with the female vet.) As noted in more recent reviews on Yelp, his bedside demeanor is dismissive and cavalier. More substantively, among other mistakes, Dr. Moses told me my cat did not have a heart murmur even after I made clear to him three previous vets had said otherwise, and he gave completely incorrect information on pet insurance in order to convince me to have a costly and unnecessary procedure done. My last visit to this clinic was in an emergency, as my cat had not eaten, drank water or gone to the bathroom in 2-3 days. After explaining these facts and my concern about kidney problems/failure, Dr. Moses said my cat "didn't look sick," dismissed everything I'd just said, and said he'd have a blood test run to be safe. He left a voicemail the following day in which he said my cat was in renal failure and needed to go to an emergency vet ASAP. I did try to return the call but was told he was unavailable, and that the vet tech "couldn't really explain much else" in terms of details. I went immediately to Bluepearl (which provided excellent care), where it became clear my cat was truly failing and would likely not make it. I note that this in part stemmed from the vet's inability to give my cat fluids at a fast enough rate due to his "extremely loud" heart murmur, as too much fluid at once could easily trigger heart failure. My cat did not make it to the morning. Unsurprisingly, I have not heard from Heights Veterinary Clinic again. Read Less

I took my cat here 6 years ago after she experienced bleeding. After about $1,000 of tests and scans, we learned that she had bladder stones. They performed the very expensive surgery and my overall vibe was eh, they aren't very nice, but I went on my way. 6 years later, I've moved neighborhoods and been to a variety of vets around the city. My cat experienced a series of seizures last week so as a result, I've been pulling her files from each office for her new vet. Today I called the Heights Veterinary Clinic and not only are they unable to email my cat's file to me as they DO NOT HAVE A COMPUTER, they apparently throw out files older than 5 years old. I must start by saying that we love Dr. Thompson and the vet techs. They practice good listening, are genuinely concerned and truly care about the pets. Recently, however, we had an unfortunate experience with Dr. Moses. Our shy kitten suddenly became sick. We were nervous and took her in immediately. Dr. Moses began our visit by showing us x-rays of different pets who had eaten household items. He even pulled out containers filled with items he has removed from pets. His manner was light hearted but our cat was in pain and we felt that this was a bizarre moment. We also weren't sure whether to laugh or congratulate him. When we explained that our kitten had begun vomiting blood late the previous night, he asked "so she just spontaneously started throwing up?" We were not sure how to interpret this question. Was he shaming us? Overall, Dr. Moses' bedside manner was off putting. He did not seem to listen well, his tone was patronizing and he was not gentle or quiet with our shy, nervous kitty. We will be making appointments with Dr. Thompson from now on.Read Less

I cannot thank Dr Thompson and her assistants Christina and Ashland enough for their care of my cat these last couple of years. Whatever I described of his behavior or symptoms to Dr Thompson, she was able to imitate what I meant so exactly that i knew we were talking about the same thing. When Maxie developed kidney disease they taught me, with great care and patience, to give him pills and fluids, and got to know him so well he actually started to enjoy hanging out at the office. Dr Thompson was able to stabilise him for the best part of a year, and took me through all the stages of his inevitable decline. She and Christina finally came to our house when he could not hold himself together any more and gave him a merciful release. I cannot thank him enough. We also saw Dr Moses several times over the years, and he was always careful, knowledgable, detailed in his explanations, and kind. I totally recommend this practice. Read Less

Be warned with this clinic. They are very unprofessional, Impatient, and mostly concerned with making money. They will try to convince you to run numerous tests that add up to several hundreds of dollars that do nothing to help your pet but only help their bottom line. In my case, the vet insisted I culture my cat's eye discharge to make sure the antibiotic she prescribed was the correct one. I was told that the results would be in in 3-5 days, enough time to make a change if the 7 day cycle of antibiotics she prescribed was wrong. I paid $150 for this. 9 days later I still hadn't heard from her and I called to ask for my money refunded, since the culture was moot. She refused. 6 months later when my cat was very sick, stopped eating and couldn't stand up, she refused to see my cat, said she didn't feel we got along and told me I should go elsewhere. There are other clinics in Washington heights and most people agree you should go there instead. Read Less

Stay away from this place! We had a really terrible experience here. In the past we have only had the woman vet, but last week we had the man vet. He was rude, dismissive and aggressive. Without any warning he started grabbing my dog so hard behind his neck. My dog started making yelping/whining noises I've never heard before The vet then told my husband and I it was our fault because we were trying to calm him down-claiming we were encouraging him. He proceeded to grab him rough two more times until my husband told him he had to stop and wasn't allowed to treat an animal like this. Thank god he spoke up because I was in shook. The vet then mocked us and said he would do it our way because we knew better. Terrible. This man has no compassion for animals or people. I have never written a review on Yelp-but for the safety of your pet, stay away from this place! We left in the middle of the appointment and our dog walked home with his tail between his legs. Had a really bad experience here. I brought my dog in for his yearly shots/physical. The male vet (I didn't get his name) was excessively rough with my dog and somewhat rude to me. As a result of his roughness, my dog started reacting badly, which caused the vet to be rougher and begin to yell at him. As I tried to calm my dog down, the vet started yelling at ME for "encouraging him." He muzzled him with a VERY tightly tied rope (ROPE!), and my dog could barely breathe and was clearly panicking. Then he couldn't find my dog's veins, and he (the vet) got increasingly hostile, and stuck my dog at least 10 times trying to find blood. It was a terrible experience for both my dog and for me (I actually had to sit down on my way out because I was so upset that *I* almost passed out). What's possibly even worse is that I mentioned my dog had been sick lately. The vet didn't seem to care, and did nothing. 4 days later, I had to take my dog to the ER for vomiting and diarrhea, which entailed xrays, sedation, and fluids. I've never encountered a vet that seems to hate animals so much. It's unfortunate, because the tech and the receptionist were very nice, and treated my dog well. I will never, ever take my dog back there. Read Less

I was promised a call back.Second call: 1 week later, called back. A different vet tech chatted w/me but, as she herself is not the vet, could not answer my questions. Told me to call back Monday at noon.Third call: Called back Monday at 12:15; the vet had apparently just left. Tech took my name and number and said the vet would call me later today or tomorrow. The call never came. =========================4 stars based solely on the below experience -- I've not actually been to this clinic...Today, Saturday, around 4pm, a big dog attacked a much littler dog outside my building. Hearing the melee, I ran outside to help (I know a bit about dogs), the owners had apparently YANKED the dogs apart (wrong move; FYI: when dogs fight, each owner should grab the back legs in wheelbarrow position -- this almost always works to split them up), leaving a chunk yanked from the little dog. I took the little dog owners number, ran upstairs and called THREE clinics:Inwood vet didn't answer (although I think they were open), a recording gave an "emergeny number" which I called -- but that was USELESS)Washington Heights Animal Hospital didn't seem to understand what the word "emergency" means and the girl, talkign slowly and not getting that I was kinda in a rush, wanted to give me the SAME "emergency number" as above which was USELESS (yes,in caps again)My vet (who's in the Bronx) is closed Saturday afternoon.Called Heights Vet Clinic, spoke w/Jocelyn. She got it. Made sure w/the vet that the dog could be brought in, and cleared me to tell the owner to head on over. The guy ran his dog over, and they were suturing her up and taking care of her when I checked in later.I might have a new vet! Although I never actually went to the clinic, I felt like I should include a rating this for people who might consider it. I live around the corner and was shopping around for a vet to have my dog spayed. They wanted to charge me $450 for a procedure the ASPCA van charges $100 for and THATS if you don't apply for government assistance to qualify to have it done for free. Like I said, I have never been in, which is why I gave it 3 stars. This very well could be the Johns Hopkins of veterinary clinics, though I doubt it from reading the other reviews. I used this vet for the first and last time in 2002 and feel the need to share that experience as it is clear nothing has changed. My fiance brought my cat in there for a checkup. I had my old vet send my cats records so he would see that she had a food allergy that had been tested. He then ran the same test even though he had the results and then tried to charge me $400. I informed in no uncertain terms that he had the results for that test and that there was no need to run the test again. Once I informed him that I had reported him to the better business bureau and threatened to sue him he took the charge off my bill. I have noted over the years that he is constantly having to post help wanted signs. I am assuming that the receptionist burn out from constantly having to deal with justifiably angry pet owners. Dr. Moses tried to persuade me to do it, but I kept saying no. He gave me brochure and asked me to think about it. They vaccinated him without my permission {I discovered a hefty charge for it on my bill} and then claimed that I had never told them I didn't want the vaccine. They also extracted three teeth during a routine cleaning without discussing the possibility of doing that first or asking permission. When I expressed my unhappiness at being charged for a vaccination that I had clearly stated that I didn't want, I was first told that I should have had it done since it was important, and when i replied, that still doesn't give you the right to go ahead and do it since I told Doctor Moses that I didn't want it done, I was invited to take my business elsewhere. Last spring I took imy 16 year old cat to Dr. Moses because a roommate of mine had brought in a kitten and I was worried that my cat had caught something since he developed a crusty nose and seemed lethargic. Dr. Moses vaccinated my cat and then strongly advised a teeth cleaning, too. First, most vets don't vaccinate a 16-year old sick cat because it further lowers his immunity, but Dr. Moses said it would be fine. But upping the bill by pushing to do cleaning on the same day was unconsciousnable because it required anasthesia. I should've never agreed to it. My cat was really never the same since visiting Dr. Moses and subsequently developed pneumonia. I sincerely feel that after I'd mentioned previously taking my cat in for expensive treatment on his thyroid, that Dr. Moses looked at me wondering how much he could make off me that day. That day cost over $600 and was not in the best interest of my pet at all. I'm so sorry I took my little guy there. Read Less

I rescued a cat from the streets who was nearly on the verge of death. She was skin and bones. I brought her into see the vets at Heights Vet Clinic. They were very nice, and handled the cat very well. I have seen both of the veterinarians there and I like them both a lot. They offered good advice about how to nurse my cat back to health. And the prices were much more reasonable than another vet clinic in the neighborhood. the vet techs there are wonderful people, too! I would definitely recommend taking your pet there. Keep in mind the waiting room is a bit on the cramped side, it's actually very tiny, so if you have a rowdy animal or a dog that is aggressive, waiting outside might be a good idea. Read Less

I strongly disagree with the bad reviews that have been posted about the heights veterinary clinic. Dr. Thompson and Dr. Moses are both excellent doctors who truly know what they are talking about.... Meaning no B.S ! Some people just don?t like hearing the truth, and maybe that is why they find them a bit forward. I have been bringing my pets to this office for 4 years now, and yes it is a bit pricy but very worth it! The staff there is incredible! The girls are super kind and are always willing to help and answer any questions. ... Now about the doctors calling back in timely fashion regarding lab results...every time my and or other pets get lab work done the Drs. and their staff always remind us to call the next day or so for lab results. This place is hit-or-miss. I have found both Dr. Thompson and Dr. Moses to be capable, but their bedside manner is spotty. Sometimes they are kind and considerate, sometimes they are insensitive and downright rude. In addition, they keep very limited, inconsistent hours, and have too small of a space. Finally, they are not particularly good at returning phone calls or calling with test results in a timely fashion. One positive is the staff, who are helpful--often more helpful than the doctors. I unfortunately had an awful experience with Heights Veterinary. I found them to be both unfriendly and sadly negligent. I went in with my dog for what I thought was routine bloodwork before an operation scheduled for him elsewhere. I asked the practice to fax the test results to the animal hospital (Animal Medical) and to let me know if anything was out of the ordinary. Sadly, they did neither. Both I and the animal hospital had to call repeatedly to get the test results. When I finally talked to the vet, Jan, she informed me that my dog's white cell count was very low and that he shouldn't have surgery. When I asked why no one informed me of this she argued that it was not her fault and as I asked more questions, she actually hung up on me. I was stunned. Luckily the opthamology department at Animal Medical saved the day, doing extra tests, finding the problem and actually talking to me and answering my questions. Read Less

Thank you.

She got it. I cannot recommend this couple. She is very kind, professional, empathetic.  He is curt, overbearing, and rude. Instead of advising a client he bossed me around like I wasn't the one in charge of my pet. It's expensive to boot (which explains why the office is closed so much).  I won't be back. Read Less

I would hate it for a desperate owner to get locked into a costly, overcharged procedure because they cared about their animal. Read Less

I hope that he will retire soon so we can get a real vet who listens to ALL of his clients. Read Less

I took my cats to Heights for several years. They were very knowledgeable, and I was always able to get appointments quickly. The staff that was there at the time were great! They always interacted with the animals that came in, and knew everyone's name. Since I moved out of the neighborhood I don't go there any longer, but I think they're definitely the best vet clinic in that area. Read Less

I am happy with Dr. Moses and his partner there at the clinic. Their sense of urgency and care is appreciated very much. They were kind, and helped me understand my cat and what he was going through and I have made an appointment to get my cat's teeth cleaned which everyone should do, as I have tried brushing his teeth for years, never works and now he has a crust built up and they really need a god cleaning.....they have to bother him some when he eats. I am thankful they are right here in the area and will return when I need to have a caring Vet look at my pets Read Less

I had a very bad experience here. I brought my cat in to get his teeth cleaned. I was asked if I wanted him vaccinated, and I clearly said no, I didn't, and explained that my cat never goes outside and never sees other cats, so that it wasn't necessary.

(so ZELDAd maybe you ought to pay closer attention next time.) :) Read Less

Read Less
