An absolute dream for our furbabies. We have two little ones that require very different levels of care. One is our allergy King, and the other our temperamental diva. MCS and Dr. Painter have expertly helped us navigate through any challenges faced in raising these two brilliant kitties. From start to finish, and/or medical to behavioral, MCS has proven to be a guiding light for us. Each visit is always a warm, enjoyable experience and we leave feeling confident that we're able to manage anything thrown our way. This truly is a practice that authentically cares, and is very devoted to the best feline care possible. Honestly, 5 stars isn't enough for how amazing they are! They are a perfect 10. Read Less

Never heard of a cats only vet until I moved to NYC and boy am I glad this place exists.  The entire staff from the front desk to the vets themselves are extremely professional, knowledgeable, and most of all caring.  Because it is cats only, the environment is very peaceful since there are no other types of animals making all sorts of strange noises.  And the quality of care is superb.  We recently got two cats, one of whom has allergy issues that are little more pronounced than normal. He also had an ear infection we were unaware of because of those allergies.  Within mins the vet fixed him right up, gave us immediate answers to questions that we had lingering, and was extremely timely in getting back to us with the results of our little stinkball's bloodwork.  We even noticed the increase happiness in our cat as soon as we got home.  We will definitely be returning and highly encourage any cat lover to bring their feline fam here. It's taking me a lot to write this review. But I am still torturing myself and still in pain after my cat died and I really resent how MCS handled the whole situation, making my regret even more. First off, this place used to be decent. But once the founder left, things got messy fast. They would mess up my cat's medications a lot, with me having to call over and over to get my prescription and for them to get them right. And second, as I mentioned before, I think they didn't do my cat right in the end. My cat had a lot of chronic diseases going on at once and was elderly but he had been coping really well with all of them. Dr. Sheheri prescribed him a chemo drug to deal with a stomach issue but it made him go downhill very fast, making his kidney values go through the roof and causing him not to eat. First, she didn't tell me the medicine would cause loss of appetite, which could be fatal for all that he had going on. Second, he was now going into kidney failure and she kept making the wrong moves left and right. The kidney failure causes seizures, something a simple google search will tell you. She kept going on and on about how he might have an underlying neurological problem. She suggest we go to the hospital and runs tests on him. He was already on seizure medication though and like I said, the seizures were happening because of his kidney diseases. We did take him to the hospital and vet there told us this. There was a critical two weeks or so where Sheheri could have given him potassium and B12 shots and she did none of this, instead emailing us (it's urgent...call!) recommending a potassium supplement which would take weeks to work. I wish to god, I had taken him somewhere else and when I saw her not recognizing how urgent or dire his situation was, going somewhere else. He had a lot going on and his time was going to come soon but by prescribing an already frail cat such a strong chemo pill and dilly dallying while he was going into kidney failure pushed him to his death soon, And any pet owner knows that any extra minute counts. EDIT: DAY TWO. Can I give MCS 10 stars? I love ALL the ladies from office manager to tech to vet. My cat isn't out of the woods but we are feeling better about her and these are the coolest chicks in vet or healthcare generally. Money is an issue and today we did the blood (189) but not the urine, which saved 125. Ultrasound is the same in Harlem and UWS (about 600 bucks) so saving 125 on something not deemed essential was not trivial. One hears about vets ordering unnecessary tests. That is not the case here. And Dr Sheheri did not make me feel like a bad person for inquiring about cost. I have heard of vets shaming pet owners, as though we all have unlimited funds. I am especially grateful for this, aside from how obvious the love these women have for cats. This is a vet for cat people. ***I cannot say enough for Manhattan Cat Specialists. Dr Sheheri loves cats. My cat is so sweet and chill. They all said they wish every cat was like this at the vet. Toonces may have a tumor. Or some other irregularity in her intestine. She's a rescue and about 7. Vets cost a fortune but I checked my friend's vet in Harlem and the ultrasound and blood work are the same price. The visit here is about 20 bucks more, as is the rabies shot but overall, they're comparable. That's saying a lot given the rent differential. I am scared. But tomorrow I go back for blood panel and then we will see if an ultrasound is in order. I have a feeling Queens will be no cheaper for the ultrasound. Humane Society and ASPCA are less for blood work but I'm not going to deal with that first come, first served nonsense. I would recommend MCS to anyone in Manhattan or the outer boroughs. I took a Via there from the UES and it was no problem.P.S. I took her in because I found some blood in her stool. Also it's time for her annual grooming and I needed a rabies vaccine as per NYC law. I didn't realize she was sick as she seems her usual self. They clipped her nails and dealt with the bit of matting on chest and did not charge for this. So I don't need to take her to the groomer though of course that flower smell after bath is always lovely. Read Less

I think the Vet Tech who is an Asian Woman is so curt and rude. I work in the healthcare field and would never have an employee who lacks in patient communication skills. She is difficult and honestly seems to be an unkind person. She should not be working in any health care field! I have been a client with Manhattan Cat Specialist for 15 years. I realise that they are a corporation now. They used to have a fabulous staff. I refuse to be treated by such an authoritative, and mean Woman. My Mother calling and getting the same response today was the last straw! I come here with the hope to trust people with my animals not to feel uncomfortable and talked down to and unable to speak freely in regards to my pets. I am through with this place. There is another Cat only Vet group in Manhattan. I will go there. They have lost me and considering that one of my pets is ill they sure lost alot of money too! It's too bad because the Vet is actually a gem. Too bad that one has to deal with the Vet tech more often than tbe vet herself. Read Less

My cat went for his routine wellness exam two weeks ago - he was deemed fine - they gave him some sedation for ear cleaning.  initially they were going to push abx on me (prior to examining his eardrums, which appeared to be fine, without infection).  then the vet gave me a very hard time for not getting the blood works - the blood works was going to be around 400 dollars.  my cat was doing fine - so i declined.  i overheard the vet say loudly to my cat: "well, let's hope your mommy saves some money so you can get your bloodwork." real classy. real subtle.  well... last week, he died from severe cardiomyopathy/respiratory distress.  i don't know if routine blood work would have caught any sign of heart failure - not likely - unless they routinely get cardiac labs on cats.  maybe a good examiner/a cat specialist, would have caught some cardiac abnormalities - i honestly don't know if any primary providers (human or animal) really do good wellness exams anymore.  maybe a careful, skilled vet would have listened to his heart and heard something, caught it early...i don't know.  my cat had sudden respiratory distress s/t to severe cardiomyopathy and he died last thursday.   did i kill him because i didn't get the routine blood work?  was it the sedation that pushed him over?  what could i have done differently?  the hospital where he died sent a notification to manhattan cat specialists on friday.  i didn't get any calls from them so i went to see her on saturday and they said she would call me on monday - no call yet - and it's thursday night.  i don't feel like they care at all.  and i wonder - if i got those routine labs - would he have died?  or would he have undergone lot of uncomfortable/unnecessary tests - just to die in a month or so?  i don't have answers to these questions.  and since they are not calling back, i'll probably be forever wondering.  maybe it was all my fault.  if i had to do this all over again, i would have just kept going to his normal vet and would not have come here.  i assumed that because they were cat specialists - that somehow my cat would get better care.  it turned out that this was not the case.  he was a good cat.  gentle and beautiful. i will miss him. I mostly had an issue with their staff and Drs. They weren't that friendly and the doctor suggested vaccines that I later found out my cat didn't need at all. It's amazing how much can grief can be avoided by finding a vet who's not only as big of a medical nerd as you (you'd be surprised how many aren't. Some are drawn to being doctors, others are drawn to medicine.), but who also has vast experience, is generous with his (or her) time, has solid hunches/gut instincts AND who's readily available. After meeting with Dr. Plotnick today, it's like 200 pounds of stress and anxiety have vanished. I feel like I can finally focus on enjoying my time with my cat rather than having to constantly research, lobby and present evidence to myriad internists to get her on a working protocol for her rare illness. What's more, it's so wonderful to be told that you're doing all the exact right things and giving your fur baby the best chance there is to thrive. If anyone needs an amazing internist and GP, I can't recommend Dr. Plotnick at Manhattan Cat Specialists highly enough. It's a haul to the Upper West Side, but it's worth it. Read Less

I brought my cat many years ago to see Dr. Arnold Plotnick. My then boyfriend and I still, to this day, have a running joke for any uncomfortable experience: "well, it could be worse, it could be Plotnick". I have never met a more callous veterinarian. He was immediately snide and supercilious when he discovered my cat wasn't a rescue. He performed an extremely painful procedure on him to remove urine from his bladder. He withdrew the needle, empty, as my boy screamed. He said it wouldn't be painful but turns out many vets would never do this to a cat not under sedation. Worse, when he withdrew the empty needle he said, "Persians always have tiny bladders" and plunged the needle in for a second stab. We were scarred for a long time. He made no attempt to conceal his contempt for me, my boyfriend and our store-bought Persian cat. This visit remains the one thing that still fills us with remorse. I chose to see this person from the great reviews and sorry for those of you who like him - I found him cold and sadistic to the point of wondering how in the world he has a practice. Read Less

Disappointing and frustrating experience! We took our kitten here bc of stool issues and didn't receive satisfactory care whatsoever! Everyone there -from receptionists to the dr- just had this sense of being overwhelmed which lead ultimately to a negative experience I believe. Our dr was dr Sheheri and her lack of communication is very frustrating! She took blood work and stool results (which cost hundreds of dollars!!!) and we waited worrying and with the diarrhea still going on for so many days and then after calling and emailing them 10 times they realized that she actually emailed someone else by mistake?! She knew how worried we were and mistakes happen,  but she couldn't follow up?! I've emailed her a few times after that with ongoing questions (about the same issue) and SHE NEVER RESPONDED!! Still to this day.. Trying to get her on the phone was also next to impossible as she was always out or "in surgery". What kind of service is this?! I am so upset that this is my first review for anything ever, but I felt like letting people know, bc it was really scary and upsetting not knowing what to do and getting no communication at all from the vet. Even their billing was messy.. - ended up being correct, but took weeks to clear up a question about double billing and reversing of charges..One positive (hence two stars) - they do house calls and the dr who came to our place, Dr. Brennen, was absolutely wonderful. I'm adding some info to my previous review because my furbabies have now not only boarded here but one of them had to have dentistry.  I read some previous reviews that indicated they thought people here only cared about money and not the cats but that was not my experience.  Everyone seemed to really care about their well being and also my peace of mind.  Gina could not have been sweeter and she seemed to dote on the cats that were being boarded.  She spent plenty of time talking to me to help calm my concerns and I saw the way she handled the cats because she let me come down to the boarding kennel with her when I brought them and picked them up.Gill went out of his way so Nala could have her dental work done before she had more problems even though he was going on vacation.  He seems to have done a great job.  And even though he was later on vacation he didn't hesitate to answer my emails when I had questions or concerns.  He even suggested I email him a photo (the man was on vacation but he didn't hesitate to take the time...obviously he cares) so he could take a look and make sure all was okay.    Every tech and receptionist was extremely patient and helpful when I called while I was away to check on them as well....which I did several times because I was nervous.  And the cats came home seeming perfectly calm and happy and not at all stressed. I would not hesitate to bring my cats here again.Previous review:So far, so good!  If boarding goes this well I'll be able to relax.  I've been going to another vet (whom I adore) for years but they recently had a flood and the office is being rebuilt so I had to find another place to board this year.  Brought the cats in for an exam before boarding and was very pleased with Dr. Sheheri and Liliane and the rest of the staff.  Everyone was really patient and good with my babies.  Dr. Sheheri mentioned a few things that I should consider doing in the future to keep my babies healthy but didn't push to have them done now.  She recognized that being in a new place was stressful enough for the cats (and ME) right now.  She took her time with them and gave them what I could see was a thorough exam.  She answered all my questions without rushing me and took a detailed history since I was unable to get my records for them.  I left feeling a lot better about having to leave them somewhere new.  Their hours here are wonderful and the staff all seems great, too.  Believe me, I called ALL over town and there were only about 3 places I even considered when I was done because so few places had a staff that seemed to care when I called and explained my problem. I took my cat Oliver their 4 1/2 years ago. I don't know if they treated him adequately but I can say that what I saw made me concerned about the quality of care that they give. The waiting area was quite small. We sat across this cage with a cat that they were looking to adopt out. We waited for about 45 minutes and in that time this cat had chronic diarrhea. Once Oliver was seen and done with his appointment I spoke to Dr. Plotnick. He said they were looking for a home for the kitty. I said do you think its helpful for the cat to have diarrhea? then I said if you feed her raw it would clear it up right away.  "He said so would medicine." I said exactly. In other words despite this cat being at a vets office she was not being treated. I guess there's no profit in treating an animal up for adoption.  Ollie and I never went back. I guess we dodged a bullet. Read Less

DO NOT GO HERE if your cat needs special care or has an ongoing condition. YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE GOOD CARE. I am at my wits end with a cat that has explosive liquid diarrhea that is all over my apartment, furniture, carpets, etc. I trekked all the way to the upper west side from queens to this vet practice from queens based on the great reviews and paid $500 for an exam and tests. All I got was that the tests were negative and "feed him this food" and it should get better. It's worse than ever and I not only wasted my money but still haven't been able to help my poor little guy. Such a disappointment and complete waste of time and money. I'm sure this vet is great for others, but if your pet has a condition that requires more probing and examination, don't bother. Read Less

I very, very rarely write reviews but Dr Plotnick is like the cat whisperer. If you have any issue with your feline companion you can be assured of the best care. My two cats often get very stressed when being seen by a vet - put them in the hands of Dr Plotnick and all the anxiety disappears immediately. Other vets have had to hold them down to take blood or administer medication as they fight and snarl (and my cats are very, very placid!), but in the company of this jedi cat master they would not only go immediately into the calm zone, but afterwards they would tidy up the consultation room and give the Dr a foot massage!Read Less

I have never written an online review before, but felt compelled to express how great I feel that I finally found wonderful vet. Before I met Dr. Arnold Plotnick I had taken my kitten to three other vets, none of whom could identify his condition and was powerless to help. Big thank you to Dr. Plotnick who correctly diagnosed my kitten's rare disease. He did correct tests and had researched the symptoms before prescribe treatment, something I realized no other vet had done. Dr. Plotnick is very gentle, attentive to every detail and before starting any treatment always takes the time to explain what the problem was and how his treatment should work. He treats every cat as if it were his own loved cat. Dr. Plotnick admires the depth of his knowledge in the field of cat health care. The reception staff have always been polite and professional also, often under very busy conditions. Wonderful experience! Would highly recommend this vet office. Read Less

I adopted a geriatric cat (73 in human years) who needed lots of TLC and medical attention. A friend highly recommended Manhattan Cat Specialists and my cat has received wonderful care at this clinic. This ?cats only? vet will put your kitty at ease. No doggy smells to upset your cat. When I first got my cat, I must have called the vet 3 or 4 times a week with concerns and questions. The vet on duty always called back to answer my questions. All the vets here are very caring and attentive. They explain all the options for treatment. My cat once had an emergency and I called the vet after regular hours. The phone message directs you to a 24-hour animal hospital where you can take your cat in an emergency. My cat has had many procedures at Dr. Plotnik?s clinic. She had her tummy shaved for a scan, had an x-ray, an enema, got her claws trimmed, was microchipped, and was referred to a hospital for thyroid treatment. Not all at the same time! She is now doing fine. Manhattan Cat Specialists will board your cat. In addition to keeping a sweet resident cat, they always have a cat or two in need of a good home. Every time I go there, a new cat is waiting to be adopted. The staff takes such good care of these homeless kitties. One day I saw a staff worker change the food because the cat didn?t like it. They offer a senior discount. Convenient location near the 1,2, or 3 subway and opposite a pet store in case you need to pick up something for kitty. Read Less

Manhattan Cat Specialists offers the best professional care you are going to get for your cat. Dr. Plotnick and his staff are informed of the most up to date treatments and they provide a warm and caring environment for your cat (and for you). They really like cats! I feel confident that my cats are in expert hands and that nothing is being recommended other than what the cat needs (translation: the doctor and his staff are there to help your animal, not to extract money for unnecessary treatments). Fees are reasonable, and seniors get a discount for services performed. I travel from lower Manhattan to the upper West side Manhattan Cat Specialists Clinic. It is worth it. Before going to Dr. Plotnick, I lost an animal needlessly because my neighborhood vet failed to properly supervise her staff. I learned my lesson and did the research to find the best care I could for my cats by reading and consulting with professional veterinarians. I found Dr. Plotnick who is highly regarded by the veterinarian profession, writes regularly on feline medicine and serves as medical editor for Tuft?s University Veterinarian School Catnip Magazine. I am glad I found him. Right now sitting next to me purring with kitty contentment is my 15-year-old cat. A year and a half ago she was close to death from kidney failure. Dr. Plotnick and his wonderful staff nursed her back to a happy, healthy life. How is that for a happy ending? Meeowww!

Read Less

Lovely staff! Super patient and knowledgeable. I had a million questions and concerns about finances, and they answered them all. Also, I have a particularly ill-behaved and scary cat (like, metal gloves and tranquilizer "bad"), but Dr. Sevalla was incredibly patient and kind to her, and me too! They genuinely like kitties here, which is such a nice change from other vets I've visited. My super anxious girl with stomach problems was on the mend in no time!

"Meh. I've experienced better" pretty much sums it up. For "specialists" they didn't seem any different than "normal" vets. Granted, we were just there for a normal checkup. I mostly had an issue with their staff and Drs. They weren't that friendly and the doctor suggested vaccines that I later found out my cat didn't need at all. The doctor wasn't very straightforward with some things, but one thing she did help with was choosing a good food for our cat. We eventually switched to City Vet Care down the street and are happy we did. Manhattan Cat Specialists aren't horrible, but they aren't my cup of tea. Read Less

Read Less

I should have ditched this practice when they misdiagnosed one of my cats two years ago and put me - and my poor cat - through absolute hell and a lot of unnecessary expenses and tests. I should have left then. But I stayed and this practice proved to me that that was a mistake. When my cat had a health crisis on a Saturday afternoon they not only couldn't answer me when I called and said I needed to bring him in urgently but then tried to tell me they'd have someone call me back. Then they stuck me on hold and left me there. Because I hung up and took my cat to a hospital, he survived. Because these vets and their staff are consistently non-responsive, do not have adequate equipment onsite and are generally unfeeling and unkind people, my pets will NEVER return. Read Less

We have boarded our diabetic cat here several times in the past when we have gone on vacation.  This time we made the reservation and confirmed via call and both times were told a vet tech would be in over the holiday to give him his insulin.   But when I showed up across town today the (very nasty)  new doctor told us that despite what we might have been told,  they had decided not to do that and he would be left unattended over the holiday.  Even the staff there confirmed that we were told differently.   This place has taken a huge nosedive,  I would not recommend leaving any animals to board here,  with this leadership and this poor customer service.  Buyer beware (and don't trust the info you get over the phone).

Wish we had her from day 1, this review would have been different! Read Less

Meeowww! Read Less

Dr. Plotnik and Dr Waltke are brilliant and caring professionals and a wonderful team. I first went to MCS because my cat, JC, who was very sick with a complicated immune deficiency problem as a kitten, recently lost a lot of weight very rapidly at the age of 5. I was fearing the worst, but in a matter of less that half an hour, JC had an initial diagnosis, which testing proved was correct. In a month JC made a roaring recovery, which continues today. In addition, Drs. Plotnik and Waltke explained clearly what was wrong and their plan for JC's recovery. I recommend MCS without reservation. In addition, the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. I have had cats for many years and MCS is by far the best veterenary practice I have ever used. Because I ahered to the wellness plann they established for my cats, the beginnings of kidney deterioration in both cats were discovered early. By following Dr. Plotnicks recommendations my cats lived for years with no further deterioration. They did eveything they cold when one cat had a tragic accident and could not have been more compassionate when I had to euthanized the other cat - who lived to be 20 years old under their care. I recently adopted two playful, affectionate brothers from their window. Dr. Plotnick is exceptional and the entire staff is informed and caring. I can't imagine taking my cats anyplace else. While preparing to move to NYC six years ago I looked for a veterinary practice that specialized in feline health. The first and only place I've gone is MCS. Drs. Plotnick and Waltke are consummate professionals. And the staff is wonderful, supportive, and helpful. Not only is this knowledgeable team the best at helping me keep my cats healthy, but they are without any doubt the most supportive and empathetic at the end. They've laughed and cried with me and that's a bond you just can't get anywhere else. Read Less

I really really like this vet place. Dr. Plotnick takes the time to explain to me whats going on with my cat. My last vet treated me like I was an idiot. I?m very into health issues regarding my cat and I have a lot of questions. Dr. Plotnick answered all of my questions. He even called me on the phone one day after he found an article that had to do with my cat?s heart problem. I don?t like it when vets treat their customers like they don?t know anything. My cat is a nervous cat, but she wasn?t nervous when she was at his office. I don?t know why, but I?m glad. She normally hisses and growls during the examination, but she was actually friendly! I think she knew that they really like cats there. Anyway, this place is the BEST. Read Less
