Murray Hill Pet Hospital

New York, New York
General Info
Serving Manhattan with over 50 years of experience in veterinary medicine, the doctors and staff of Kalvig & Shorter Veterinary Associates are pleased to offer their clients and patients personalized attention in customer service and patient care. On April 1, 2013, we opened our new full service hospital at 133 East 39th Street, at Lexington Avenue. Our Midtown location offers full hospitalization services for our Manhattan and outer borough clients, as well as our ongoing Upper East Side and housecall practices.. Our practice was founded upon a strong belief in the need for thorough, honest, and compassionate service within all healthcare fields. Kalvig & Shorter Veterinary Associates serves the individual needs of our many clients and their beloved pets by offering a kind and experienced approach to medicine, surgery, nursing care, and customer service. Top priority is always given to our patients' comfort, with extra attention provided by our staff of experienced and loving nurses. It is our pleasure to offer individualized care to each of our patients and their owners, rather than maintain a high volume facility, with less time allowed for the many important details of quality service and communications. As the chosen health care team for your beloved pet, we place great value upon our clients' opinions and trust. We are pleased to work with you to help you spend many happy, healthy years with your pet--our clients appreciate that together we are all close members of their pet's healthcare family. Clients' compliance and feedback to our recommendations, combined with excellent home care, allow us to succeed as a team in treating a large and vital geriatric pet population within our practice. We believe that a preventative diagnostic and health maintenance approach, coupled with loving home care, offers the greatest success for a healthy pet and a long quality of life. In addition to this, medical management, surgery, and nursing care in the hospital are recommended when appropriate and necessary. We are pleased to offer a comprehensive range of hospital services including in-house diagnostics, pharmacy, dentistry, radiology, and surgery with state of the art monitoring equipment, medical boarding, and complete out-patient services. In addition, we offer internal medicine consultations with procedures such as endoscopy, colonoscopy, ultrasound, and echocardiogram, as well as surgical consultations for a wide range of orthopedic and soft tissue procedures available on site. We value the close relationships we share with top board- certified veterinary specialists in the fields of internal medical, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, critical care, neurology, ophthalmology, oncology, nutrition, training and behavior, to offer the very best diagnostic and therapeutic advice to your pet at all times. As well, we offer excellent referrals to top trainers, dog walkers, daycare, boarding facilities and grooming salons. If we may be of service to you in any way, please do not hesitate to call us-- we look forward to meeting you.Very Sincerely,Dr. Barbara A. I brought my older cat Mimi here a while ago for blood in her stool. Dr. Bris and Chloe examined her and he suggested a change in diet. I thought "That's it? No colonoscopy? No stool culture?"He said GI sensitivities are common in older cats. He was very correct in our case. I changed her food to an easy digestible and grain free formula and the blood went away. More recently, I brought her in for bloody urine. Turned out to be a bad UTI. The staff here is great, and from my experience Dr. Bris is a kind, attentive vet who is an astute diagnostician. He performed testing in a responsible sequence and communicated with me well. My cat can be a little irritable and sassy at the vet, so their patience with her is greatly appreciated. Mimi is feeling much better. A big thanks to this team! Read Less

Dr. Fotios Bris is literally the BEST vet that I had ever had.  I have always had pets, from one dog to 9 dogs, and lived in many different places.  He is absolutely the BEST.  I wasn't happy with the vet that I was using (Rivergate); so, when one of my 4 dogs developed a limp, I took her to Murray Hill Pet Hospital.  She couldn't walk more than a few steps.  The poor thing was suffering.  I am soooooo happy that I didn't take her back to Rivergate, and decided to try Murray Hill Pet Hospital.  Dr. Bris was soooo patient, kind and unbelievably thorough with the examination.  I mean, he looked at everything, and explained the possible situations that could be causing her to limp.  She had recently developed a lump under the same leg.  So, I thought that it was mostly likely the lump that was causing her pain and the limp.  However, Dr. Bris noticed an old scar on her paw that could have something stuck in it.  It was an old scar; so, nobody, I mean nobody, would have even considered it to be the cause of the limp.  He noticed something odd about the scar.  So, I think he must have removed something during the process of examining her, could have been a splinter or whatever.  He then put her on antibiotics in case the paw was infected.  Let me tell you...he was SPOT ON!!!  Within one day of the antibiotic treatment, she was able to walk again.  After 7 days of the antibiotic treatment, she is totally fine. I owe her health to Dr. Bris. Nobody, I mean nobody, would have ever considered an infection of the paw to be the cause of the limp since it looked totally fine.  It was because of his thorough examination and attention that he found the cause of the pain and limp.  And the antibiotic that he put her on was the perfect choice.  I'm not a vet, but a pharmacist; so, I know that it would have been the perfect treatment for humans.  At Rivergate, they would have injected my dog with an expensive antibiotic that had always rendered useless.  Also, Dr. Bris looked at her chronic skin allergies and ear infections.  He gave me possible causes and options for treatment.  Her skin is now healing so well! It went from raw, red, itchy skin to nice and pink.  She looks so comfortable and happy now.  Truly, Dr. Bris is the best.  THE BEST.  And I say this because of actual events.  Another clear indication that he is the best is my dog always shakes when going to the vet, especially on the examination table.  Today, we went for a follow-up visit, and she didn't shake at all.  To me, that was proof that Dr. Bris is the best.  And I totally trust him with having the lump removed later this month. DO NOT GET YOUR INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL DOCUMENTS HERE.Had a horrible experience. Joan, office manager, insisted that my dog needed this and that treatments in order to provide health certificate, even though my dog was up to date on EVERYthing. Wrangled with me over support documents. Turned the table on me and told doc I was "difficult".  When I entered room for exam, the doc, without even saying "hello", nothing, started yelling at me. Clearly, this is not the way to start a new relationship with a patient. The real kicker is that the health certificate Joan provided was filled out incorrectly so it is invalid. I am convinced she did it out of spite.  She seems "mean". Good thing I checked it out thoroughly against the country's requirements. I can't use it the way it is. Too toxic and emotionally draining to have the certificate corrected. I went elsewhere. Travel is stressful enough. If they can't even fill out a simple form correctly, and are trying to upsell me along the way, it makes you wonder about the rest of their operation. Read Less

He was always attentive and I felt like my dog was in good hands. Lauridia detected a heart galllop in my beautiful 8 year old cat. She had been acting lethargic at times. Instead of referring me to a cardiologist or even just suggesting an echocardiogram he just wanted me to buy a $400 blood panel test. Mini went home that day not knowing she had a treatable heart condition HCM. She died 6 months later after a painful blood clot & heart attack on the way back to him. Now I know that even at the poorly funded city animal shelter in East Harlem tells every adoptor if a pet has a heart murmur and that it requires an echocardiogram to further diagnosis and treat. Not dan though. He just wanted $$$ for a worthless blood test. As a result my cat died unnecessarily. Read Less

Experience counts. I'd highly recommend Murray Hill Pet Hospital, especially if you have a geriatric pet. We initially brought our elderly dog there AFTER she'd been over-medicated for Cushings by another vet. We'd made up our mind about what treatment Mazie would and would not get, and Dr. Dan listened and respected our wishes. There were no unnecessary tests or procedures, and Maizie lived for another two years. Our cat is now nearly 18 years old and has kidney disease and high blood pressure. Dr. Dan and his team at Murray Hill Pet Hospital are nothing short of exceptional. My 5 year old cat, Jaxx, became very ill one Saturday morning and in a complete panic I just brought him in to MHPH. Despite not having been there before and not calling ahead of time, they were still very accommodating/understanding and able to fit him in within 20 minutes. Unfortunately, Jaxx ended up having to stay overnight for a few days which I didn't exactly handle well but Dr. Dan explained everything to me in complete detail, relinquishing some of my worry. He also called to give me an update every day on Jaxxs' status until he was able to come home. After about a week of recovery, Jaxx fell ill again and needed emergency surgery. Dr. Dan once again gladly fit Jaxx into his very busy schedule. He was required to stay almost a week and again Dr. Dan gave me daily updates (one day I missed the call and my voicemail was full so he took the extra step to send a letter via email). Jaxx is now home recovering doing very well thanks to Dr. Dan and his spectactular team. I would recommend them ten times over. Their care and attentiveness goes above and beyond just good customer service. The prices were more than reasonable, in fact I'm sure I would pay nearly double if not more going anywhere else. If you have a cat- this should be your vet, even if it's not a convenient location for you, do it, it's worth it. Dr. Dan and his staff are amazing.  My cat is 13 years old and has kidney disease.  After years of improper care and expensive visits to Gramercy Animal Hospital, I found Dr. Dan through my sister.  This is what has gone right with Dr. Dan:1. Before switching vets, I called around to various clinics.  Most suggested that we perform a scan right away.  The condition of the kidneys can be easily assessed by feel and would have been completely unnecessary.  2. Dr. Dan diagnosed an ear infection that my previous vet failed for diagnose for at least 6 years.3. Contrary to my previous vet's recommendation of putting her on a low-protein diet, he recommended a high-protein diet and explained the reasons why.4. Recommended a better way to provide a more precise high-blood pressure medication other than the previous vet who gave me small pills broken up unevenly into tiny quarters.5. His staff are really nice and gentle with my cat.  After my visit from my previous vet, she would recoil and hide when we got home.  With Dr. Dan, she was visibility less stressed.6. Wait times are reasonable- zero to 10 minutes!7. Prices are even more reasonable, a fraction of the cost of my previous vet.My biggest regret is not having found Dr. Dan earlier, maybe my cat would be in better condition had she received this level of care from the beginning. If I could give zero stars I would. This place locks dogs in tiny, wooden enclosures with NO WATER in 90 degree heat. I work in the office above and all day, everyday, I hear dogs crying and barking to get out. How can an animal hospital treat sick/injured dogs like this?? DO NOT BRING YOUR PET HERE!!!! This is despicable. EDIT: To Stacy Lauridia: thank you for your response and explanation of what is going on here. However, we have seen several different dogs down there. Not just this black lab(?). I saw a shiba enu there recently, as well as another dog which was a mixed breed. I see no water in any of these dog runs, and when it is 90 degrees out and 90% humidity, this is unacceptable! To the person (Dana Nirschel) who posted about dogs being locked in small boxes... this is the most ridiculous post and couldn't be farther from the truth! The dog in the photo is actually Dr. Dan's pet dog Boris, who happens to be the most spoiled dog on the planet! This is a dog that literally gets to go to the beach to play every single day and gets walked all day long and loved unconditionally... all the time!! Every dog should be as lucky as Boris and everyone knows how spoiled and loved Boris is and how ridiculous that post is that Dana Nirschel wrote. It would almost be comical, if it wasn't such an insulting blatant defamation of character towards Dr. Dan and the staff. Boris goes everywhere with Dan, all the time and the ONLY time he is in the outside dog run is when the landlord's reps come into the building because they are afraid of (all) dogs. He has never been "locked in a small box" for hours on end... nor has any dog! Dogs are let out when their cages are being cleaned and no dog is ever out in the heat for more than 10 minutes at a time. When it is nice out, they can be outside for longer and they enjoy being outside. They are usually free to play in the open area unless they have an issue that we don't want them to run, (injury, surgery, etc.) and then they are in the dog run to get fresh air while the indoor kennel is being cleaned. Dana, you shouldn't make claims based on zero facts or knowledge of the situation. Every single member of the staff loves animals and they all treat every patient as they would their own pets. Literally tens of thousands of happy clients for over a decade, yet one person looks out her window to see a dog in an outdoor run for a short time and tries to make it seem like dogs are being tortured. At ANY business that dogs frequent, barking is par for the course. Dogs bark to go out, they bark to come in, and very often bark a lot when waking from anesthesia, and they are held and loved by technicians when they do. Working next to an animal hospital, sorry to say... you will hear dogs barking all day. That is what they do and that is no reason to try to spread bad rumors about a loving, caring staff and hospital when you have never even stepped foot in the building to see how the animals are actually treated. By the way....the "tiny wooden boxes" are actually dog runs that are 10 feet long and 3 & 1/2 feet wide each! She took the photo from high above ... tiny wooden boxes they are not. People should not be allowed to review a business they have never stepped foot in and know absolutely nothing about. Read Less

I have brought at least half a dozen cats to the vets at this address. I have never had any doubt that they have my pet's best interests as their primary consideration. That's what I pay for. Do they charge a little more? Yes. Let me give everyone a tip: brain surgery, dental work, plumbing repair, clothing alterations, haircuts. Show me anyone whose first concern on those things is price and I'll show you an imbecile with bad teeth wearing a terrible suit and a lousy haircut wondering why the toilet flushes every time he turns on the hot water tap in the kitchen sink. To be fair, they used to have a receptionist who was a monster. I haven't seen her in years though. Perhaps she was finally dragged back into hell. Read Less

Guest review on Franklin's Facebook page by Sari Marks: Lauridia put my cat on a strict diet of food that was not complete and balanced nutrition. It was, in fact, marked "for intermittent feeding only." According to AAFCO pet food labeling standards, if a food does NOT provide complete and balanced nutrition, it must be labeled "for intermittent feeding only," or similar words. I brought this up to him twice but he assured me the diet was alright, and that I shouldn't give him any dry food at all (I had a bag of renal support dry food that WAS complete and balanced nutrition). He lost 4 lbs. in 4 months, going from 14 to 10 lbs. Lauridia thought this drastic weight loss was OK, joking that he wished he could lose weight like that himself. Next, when I brought him in for constipation he totally missed that he was dehydrated and needed fluid + electrolytes immediately. I only learned too late that he exhibited EVERY classic sign of dehydration in the book, constipation being one of them. He needed fluids, he needed electrolytes, but he didn't get them. Instead, Lauridia gave him an enema the result of which he declined rapidly within a couple of hours, so instead of bringing him home that day I was strongly advised by him to consent to euthanasia, which I did, thinking it was the kindest thing. Lauridia's technique of euthanasia was so horrific, likely causing unnecessary pain and terror in my pet, and a shock which I will never get over, that I can't describe it fully here. It was not an approved method prescribed by the Humane Society's pdf on pet euthanasia. It looked liked torture, my cat being positioned like a human being pilloried as punishment. And this cat never struggled or resisted or tried to bite or scratch when being handled at the vet's, not once in 13 years. Lauridia's "care" turned my strong playful healthy cat into a weakened malnourished cat inside of 4 months. I buried my Rudy on Saturday 9/19/2015 in my family's rose garden and ordered a memorial headstone. I live with no one else and have no other pet. I work from home and Rudy and I were together all day every day. Everything in my apartment reminds me of him. BTW, I do have one positive thing to say: The women working at the front desk were always very nice and compassionate.Read Less

We could never express how much we appreciate Dr. Lauridia and everyone at Murray Hill Animal Hospital. As pet parents are fully aware, we love and treat our feline child as a member of the family. I'm not exaggerating when I say that Dr. Lauridia saved his life when he took extra precautions during a surgery for something that turned out to be cancer. Four years later, we have a happy, healthy kitty. We've seen Dr. Shaw too. She, all the techs, and the hospital staff are wonderful. They're all extremely professional and competent at their jobs, but more importantly--they are kind and compassionate. Even when my husband and I have misplaced our worry and frustration by being rude to them, they've responded only with patience and empathy in return.  And they all seem totally unfazed when our normally loving, sweet kitty turns into a hissing, swatting beast the moment we get to the office. We've since moved out of the neighborhood, but we'll always go to Murray Hill Animal Hospital. I only wish we trusted all of our physicians as much as we trust our vet! Read Less

Let me start by saying that we live on the West Side, and there are few things more annoying than having to catch a cab back and forth across town, especially when you're holding a pet carrier and thus only one in five cabs will stop for you. In spite of this horror, we still take our three invalid cats to see Dr. Dan. The receptionists are incredibly sweet, know our cats' names, and (most amazingly) actually remember to fax our various prescriptions, referrals, etc. Dr. Dan is THE BEST... He's very caring, very gentle with our boys, and he's so unbelievably generous; he gave us a nebulizer face gadget on the house, and follow-up appointments are always free or extremely cheap, whereas many other vets would charge full price. Murray Hill treats and boards cats and dogs from the Mayor's Alliance for New York City's animals (a charity for pets rescued from Animal Care & Control), which I think speaks to the quality and integrity of Dr. Dan's practice. Had we not been introduced to them through the Mayor's Alliance, we would have taken our cats to the vet across the street, and we'd never have known about this special place. Read Less

Dr. Dan was my dog's vet for about 6 years, we continued to use him even after moving out of the neighborhood. We moved out of state which is the only reason we stopped seeing him. He was always attentive and I felt like my dog was in good hands. I never felt like he was trying to oversell me on unnecessary treatment, there was even one time I came in just being overly cautious about a new bump and he took a peak and assured me it was okay with no charge since we had just been in for another appointment not long ago. The office staff has always been very pleasant and responsive. I recently needed our records and I received a response in less than 10 minutes which was very helpful Read Less

I truly hope that the dog you were referring to is indeed treated as well as you say, because every dog deserves to have a beautiful, full life! Read Less

Read Less

The only vet I currently trust in NYC. Take my personal dog to Dr Dan as well as many client dogs that i have in for my board and train programs. Many of my clients end up sticking with this vet after working with him and getting an honest vibe, where most other locations look to unethically up-sell you for things you don't need. Dr. Dan is great with the dogs and tells is like it is. I appreciate that! Read Less

I've been using Murray Hill Pet Hospital since I got my dog almost 1 year ago.  Dr. Dan and staff are wonderful.  The other vet I used before who is also in the area was really expensive AND always trying up up sell me on diagnosis' and tests that I really didn't think my dog needed.  I recently had an issue with my dog Max and I called up to ask them if I needed to bring him in and they happily just answered my questions over the phone.  I highly recommend Dr. Dan and staff.  They  genuinely care about the pets they take care of and I appreciate that they made a follow up call after I brought my dog in another time when he got sick which was very thoughtful.  If you are looking for a personable vet, I definitely recommend him. Read Less

I'm probably every vet's nightmare: the too-attached cat owner. I am so grateful to have found Dr. Dan. He has been absolutely wonderful with my 15-year-old cat who had suddenly taken a bad turn. He really spent time with her and called me with updates regularly. Eve and Joan at the front desk have been great too, with suggestions and compassion. Everyone there helped make the best of a rough situation and now seem just as happy as I am that she's doing better. Read Less

My dog has been a patient of Dr. Nulton's prior to her joining Murray Hill Pet Hospital several years ago. She is the best vet I've ever had - and as pet owners know, finding a vet whom you can trust completely is a daunting task - so we didn't even think twice about following her to this practice. She is compassionate, knowledgeable & is honest about what treatments / shots are absolutely necessary. I left NY a few years ago for grad school & found an alternate vet (whom I despise); I've called Dr. Nulton for 2nd opinions & she promptly called me back every time. I always felt like she had my dog's best interest at heart. Read Less
