Whatever you do, do not take your pet here. About two months ago, we brought in our puppy for her first ever vet visit. We were recommended to them by the rescue we adopted her from. After we told the rescue what happened, they've since retracted their recommendation and will not be recommending this hospital to future adoptees. Thankfully. For her first puppy visit, they did not do a stool sample. We are first time pet owners, so was not alarmed by this, as we are not aware what happens during these visits. We called the day before to confirm what we needed to bring, what paperwork, etc. After about 4 visits, we realized that the doctor was not for us (she was quite wishy-washy and very unsure about things), so we decided to switch doctors (literally about 5/6 days after our last visit with New York Veterinary Hospital). Thankfully the next place we went (Astoria Veterinary Group --- which I HIGHLY recommend!) did a stool sample and found out she was SEVERLY infested with THREE types of worms --- hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm. Our doctor told us that she got the worms from her mother. We had been taking her to dog parks and interacting with children -- for weeks. She was immediately admitted to the hospital for overnight care. We had no idea how lethargic she really was, until she got better. The vet even told us that it was noticeable that she had a 'pot belly' -- one of the major signs. As you can imagine, we both were extremely upset. We are still dealing with the after effects, having to give her medication at the 3 week mark, and soon at the 3 month mark. It was an extremely difficult time. After I called New York Veterinary Hospital, I was told by the manager that he was 'surprised' that they didn't ask for a stool sample. After spending over 1K there, I asked for a refund of $145 for two exam checks which I thought was MORE than a fair refund, for the lack of care they gave. I went through a week and half of phone calls with this horrible establishment. One person blamed another, and so on. The doctor at one point blamed the receptionist. I ended up in tears after the last phone call, that went on for 45 minutes as they kept trying to push the blame onto ME! Saying that they didn't do the test because I was 'cost-conscious'. THEY NEVER ASKED ME FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST, NOR DID I REFUSE ONE. They also did the other typical defensive responses: that she got the worms after the visit with them (no, she didn't), that they dewormed her (no, they didn't), that we should have provided the stool and asked for the test (what, show up with a bag of poop and say 'test this' --- you don't do that when a human goes to the doctor, nor with a pet. THE DOCTOR tells you what they need in order to do their job. The job that they are trained to do). They said they would give me a refund and a call the next day, but it has been about 3 weeks, and no refund --- and no call back. I gave them ample time to redeem themselves. After this review, I will be writing to the Medical Director (which by the way, no one at the hospital knew and said they were going through a period of 'heavy turnover') If that isn't a red flag to you, I don't know what is. They have proved themselves to be a money grubbing and extremely unethical practice. Go to Astoria Veterinary Group and ask for Dr. Brock. But, please, for the health of your pet, DO NOT GO HERE.
