We rarely comment about posts on CitySearch, but this one warrants a rebuttal, if, for no other reason, to educate dog owners. We understand this person's concerns. Anytime a pet get's a vaccine reaction, it's scary and makes one wonder whether or not they did the right thing by vaccinating. It's only natural to blame the veterinarian for recommending something that made the pet sick, and to swear to never do something like that again. HOWEVER..... One must also realize that the recommendations we make don't come out of thin air. We take this responsibility very seriously, and make recommendations about vaccines based on experience and published studies. Leptospirosis is a FATAL disease, and it's spread from rats to dogs by urine. Rat's urinate in puddles, dogs walk through the puddles. It's that easy to contract. It is NOT exceptionally rare, and it is NOT very difficult to contract at all. We've had two outbreaks (and many individual cases) on the Upper West Side in the past seven years, and there was recently one in Brooklyn. Recent studies have shown that this disease, once an confined to rural settings, now is more prevalent in cities. (thanks to the rats). Three retrospective studies of Leptospirosis showed that virtually ALL the infected dogs were unvaccinated. Studies indicate that adverse reactions occur approximately 1% of the time, and primarily in small breed dogs. Is this a reason not to vaccinate? That, of course, is up to the dog owner. If there is a reaction, it can be treated effectively with antihistamines and short acting steroids. We have been veterinarians during the Parvovirus epidemic in the 80s, and through two outbreaks of Leptospirosis, and have seen too many dogs die from a disease that could have been prevented. . We do not want to be the veterinarians that have to explain to an owner why we didn't recommend a vaccine that could have protected the dog. Our dogs are vaccinated, and we think yours should be as well. Unfortunately, the vaccine lasts less than 12 months, probably closer to six months, so coming in twice a year is a must. You can see more about Lepto in an article written (not by us) by world renowned experts at our website by clicking on the link to ""NEWSLETTERS"". The location of the site cannot be published on CitySearch due to their software, but you can find us simply by Googling ""Riverside Animal Hospital New York"" Blaming us for offering a special package (it was actually a ""dental package"" and cost $495, not thousands, and was a savings of about $300) to your five year old dog is a bit ludicrous. We sent our mass mailing to all dogs over 5 years old offering this ""special"". Some dogs hit middle age at five, and some at ten. We thought it better to INCLUDE rather than EXCLUDE. Forgive us for that, please. Finally, we NEVER EVER make anyone feel like they're a ""bad"" pet owner. Our job is simply to educate. If you felt that you were a bad owner, that just be your own personal response to declining recommendations. Read Less
