We've been using Riverside (North) for several years now, first with a senior pug who we eventually needed to say goodbye to at sixteen and a half years, and now with two pug puppies. So we've been with Riverside (and in particular Dr. Cawein, although we like everyone there) through a lot - regular check ups, hand-holding through IV fluid administering, counseling for end-of-life treatment until it becomes the wrong thing, tears, and eventually pediatric visits and crazy pup...py stuff. We really feel that we've seen them - and they've seen us - through the whole spectrum, and we're very happy with them. Watching Mona get older and older, lose her sight, lose her hearing, and develop kidney problems was incredibly difficult. We didn't know what to do. We didn't want to euthanize because she was an inconvenience, but we weren't ready to say goodbye, and it seemed that she still had quality of life and knew that she was loved and safe. Riverside and Dr. Cawein talked us through the whole process, and one conversation sticks with me to this day. Paraphrasing: "It's going to be work, and as long as I think you're up to it and on balance Mona is not in pain, I'll support you. But I want you to promise me that you'll listen to me when I think it's time to let go." And that's what we did, and it created a special place in our hearts for Dr. Cawein. When we were finally ready to open our hearts and home again, there was no doubt that Riverside would be our vets. Dr. C and the whole team have been wonderful with Bokkie and Thula, steering us through questions about vaccinations, checking in when we're worried about eating or drinking or all of the other crazy puppy stuff that happens at the other end, and being there just to understand how insane it is to have puppies - not sleeping, always cleaning up poop, always wondering where that vague smell of urine is coming from. I've had vets in Manhattan for about twenty years, and lived in a few different neighborhoods, so I've regularly used at least four vets. I've been really lucky; I've never had a vet who I would warn people away from, and I've never met a vet or a tech or a front desk team that I thought wasn't doing their best. Riverside is no different. It feels warm, it feels friendly, it feels professional, and given the breadth of experiences I've had with them, I'm very comfortable saying that you should trust them, and know that you're little loved one is in good hands. Dr. Weber took care of EVERYTHING and made sure we knew how to care for him at home after our appointment. She is extremely knowledgeable and effectively engages in both preventative and acute care. Dr. Weber and the front-desk staff are fantastic! Never in my life have my partner and Bravo and I felt so welcome and taken care of. They truly know how to make you feel part of the Riverside Vet Group family. They also are quick to offer all documentation we need and email us afterward to give lab results and check in on Bravo. The biggest problem with this office is that it is very difficult to create a relationship with your vet. This is one of the possibly worst vet group I've had the unfortunate experience to deal with. In medicine, we have a saying, "do no evil." If you cannot assist an animal, then at least do not hurt it. My adopted cat has an issue of scratching (to the point of self-mutilation). I came to the Riverside Vet Group to find an answer. I felt in my initial exam, I was told to give my cat a number of shots - antibiotics, a steroid shot, and a test for bacteria. This made me a little suspicious. Usually, vets do tests first before subscribing shots. I felt that I was being ripped off. In fact I asked what the side effects are for the shots, and was told smugly that every shot has side effects. Yes, thanks for restating the obvious, but I'd like to make informed choices before letting you put needles into my pet. I picked a bacteria shot but was told to do a steroid shot instead (because that is a short term solution to prevent scratching and so they can justify that they did something positive). I was told the culture test is going to come back and tell me the real answer. My cat's culture test for bacteria was contaminated during sample handling and was inconclusive / false positive. I was advised to do more shots. When I complained the lack of capabilities, I was asked, "Did your cat's symptoms somehow resolve?" The symptoms still exist, but this is the vet that gives your animal as many shots as they can justify (TO MAKE MONEY) and they hope and pray that the issue goes away. This cannot be the right way to do treat animals. The unsuspicious owners will be duped and the victims will be their animals who cannot speak. Their plan for my cat is to subscribe as many shots as possible till the symptoms go away, or the animal falls deathly ill due to side effects. I have no plan to let that happen. I am filing an ethical complaint against this group at the New York State. Do not take your pet here. It will be worse off. Read Less

I've been going to Riverside Vets since the early 90's when no other vet or clinic would treat my cat Belle's acute asthma with anything other than steroids for her entire life. I found Dr. Raclyn at Riverside Vets and rushed her to him. He gave her one shot to help her breathe, had me change her diet and take supplements and she never had a recurrence of asthma. I never looked back. The vets and the staff took amazing care of my sweet Belle (who suffered from a variety of ailments) and saved her life a few times along the way. They were remarkably supportive, helpful and kind when I had to say good-bye to her. When it was time for me to adopt another cat, the staff at Riverside Vets introduced me to a VERY shy and sweet cat who had been rescued and brought to them months earlier - and I'm happy to say Vera went home with me that day and is coming out of her shell more and more each day - and Riverside Vets is taking great care of her as well. I love the vets, staff and quality of care so much at Riverside Vets that I schlep 13 blocks to get there when an amazing animal hospital is literally around the corner from my residence. You'll be happy you brought your animal to the great group at Riverside Vets on W. 79th! Read Less

If I could give them zero stars I would! Don't go here if you need pet prescriptions. I should have realized what a joke this place is when they recommended I fill one of my dog's seizure prescriptions at a up scale pharmacy that charged me $150 rather than going on pet-meds where I got the same thing for $15, after I had to call them repeatedly to approve the order. They've filled out my dog's second prescription (phenobarbital, a common drug) wrong five out of six times, including wrong dosage, no refills, and too much of the drug which is a controlled substance so legally the pharmacy couldn't fill it. Beyond that doctor raclyn is condescending and pushy. The entire staff has tried to get me to do blood work and other test far before their due or procedures/tests that are unnecessary. They even sent me repeated notices for stool parasite checks but not to remind me that two of my dog's vaccines had expire. I switched to Westside Veterinary Center and finally have some competent people taking care of my pets Read Less

I was looking for a vet on the Upper West Side and tried getting an idea of who I should consider and who to avoid. But the bottom line is that every clinic has bad and good reviews, and I'm really beginning to think that it's all just BS. So I started visiting the different clinics (walking the UWS is pretty easy, since I'm always walking around anyway), and I finally chose Riverside Vet Group after sitting in their waiting room and watching the staff, and the doctors, and talking to some clients. My impression was that the staff went out of their way to make everyone feel comfortable and leave with all the information they needed. The doctors were friendly, and made sure the clients understood everything (they were usually in the waiting room saying goodbye and asking if there were any questions). The place was spotless, coffee in the waiting room (thank god) and the clients I spoke to raved about the place. I finally did take my dog to see them. And I too, was very happy. Never a hard sell about anything. Good explanations. I can't really tell you if they're the best vets in the area, cause after all, what do I know about medicine? But for my minor problem, they were right on the money, and the cost was reasonable. That's all I really expect. I'm happy with them, and plan on continuing going. Read Less

The people at the front of the office are so warm and welcoming, they made me feel like I was a part of their family. Penny is always scared when she goes to see the vet but this time her tail wagged the whole time. The place smells great, hot coffee and cookies for the mommies and treats for the doggies! Dr. Raclyn is now Penny's favorite vet! He played with her and talked to her like she was the one going to decide if she wanted to get a shot or not. The whole experience was terrific. It was freezing cold outside and warm and homey inside. Even if you just want a good cup of coffee, I would go to Riverside Vet on 79th Street! Read Less

Their plan for my cat is to subscribe as many shots as possible till the symptoms go away, or the animal falls deathly ill due to side effects. I have no plan to let that happen. I am filing an ethical complaint against this group at the New York State. Do not take your pet here. It will be worse off. Read Less

with regards to antibiotics for a chronic ongoing bladder infection that any dr there should be well versed in handling as I was dr freedmans case for near six years: just an update: dr freedman refused to fill medicine for Sydney today. I have no idea why , as many times in the past ( many many times) , covering Drs have prescribed and filled the medicine, in fact , dr freedman was Sydney's vet for about six years! perhaps his feelings are hurt in some way. nevertheless this was at my dogs expense today. she and I waited all day for medicine only to be told at close to five that nothing was there for her. as the credit card is only on file at 79th, Sydney, because of dr freedman, will have to wait now until Monday. if you could please when you get in to the office and when you get a chance please fax a scrip to the 79 th street office for Monday. I really appreciate the efforts you made today * on your day off, no less* to help Sydney today. like I said it has always been a group effort at the hospital when it comes to writing time sensitive scrips and filling them. and it's too bad that dr freedman, one rotten egg has to spoil the batch and Sydney now will suffer until Monday I always thought it is supposed to be an animal hospital after all and I guess my patronage to dr freedman fir six years meant nothing as far as service today thank you for trying anyway hopefully riverside vet can fix their problems sincerely car l Read Less

Read Less
